RPM MAG...
DROPPING THE DASH!
I
t was almost 20 years ago that RPM first started it’s groundbreaking new idea for a high-horsepower badass car mag that was accessible to anyone and everyone, and was operated by a group of like-minded average everyday people with a passion for power. We brought to market a “Real Time” “Real World”car magazine that was made for you, the hardcore enthusiast. A magazine that would welcome all advertisers with reasonable ad rates and value added service, always making sure that they were placed alongside editorial in the pages of RPM. It’s been a great ride and we’re honored to still be “dedicated to extreme horsepower worldwide” all these years later. It was a different world back then and RPM actually started out 100% newsprint and hosted classified ads along with articles on most any type of fast car. Believe it or not, when we were a start-up (before new businesses were referred to as “start-ups”) we took images from contributors on film and negatives, yes film and negatives, and scanned them into our seemingly awesomely fast super computer systems to be laid out in RPM. To contrast those computers with our machines of today... to simply change a handful of pages from a publishing program into a PDF file could take an hour. Now, a similar operation takes seconds. This one will floor you! We loaded our digital files from our computers (again taking several hours) on something called ZIP disks (6 or 8 of them as I recall) and those disks were sent via courier to the printer. The printer digitally ripped them (taking several hours) into press-ready files and couriered back our hard proofs to go over before the mag hit the presses. We then called them on a land line to go over any problems or concerns in the proofs. All this was done in a matter of days to meet our “Real Time” magazine motto that promised readers information in RPM would be no older than 45 days. It also meant that our issues would be “current, not ancient” and hit subscribers doorsteps within the last week of the month prior to the cover month...meaning their May issue would arrive between April 24th and May 4th and would have content no older than 45 days in it. It was tough to accomplish, but we continue with that commitment all these years later. Initially, we registered our web domain as www.rpmclassifieds.com As time passed and the internet grew, RPM MAG grew along with it and used the web to bring you a better product.
The classifieds were eventually dropped (as it didn’t make sense to have classifieds that could be on the web instantly but took 30 days to get into the magazine) and we grew into a magazine with a gloss cover, and eventually the top-quality full gloss magazine you read today. We also engaged in a full web presence when web mags started and have enjoyed that ever since with a cutting edge interactive web version of RPM that looks exactly as the printed magazine, available at http://rpm-mag.com/rpm-e-mag/ RPM, against the grain of many other magazines, followed the wants of our readers (instead of our own) and continued to evolve and host the types of vehicles and articles in RPM to reflect what you wanted rather than cave to the same over and over again trendy content that many other print and online media outlets host. This is the “Real World” part of the RPM MAG equation. Within five years, we were being copied by other new magazines and that has continued to this very day. And we take it as a compliment. Make no mistake, we are the original standalone no-politics car mag and with our growth, we have remained a family owned and operated magazine. We officially registered as RPM MAGAZINE (A division of Revolution Publishing & Media) and decided to update our web domains to reflect that, only someone beat us to it. At the time, both www.rpmmag. com and www.rpmmagazine.com were taken by other magazines, so we were forced to go with www.rpm-mag.com and we actually made peace with that. Over the years, both those other magazines have since closed their doors and accordingly, both domains expired, however, both were quietly snapped up by domain peddlers who had no interest in the names other than as an investment. Recently, we put the call out, found and now officially own www.rpmmag.com So please give it a try...it has been a long time in the making! We are officially dropping the – (DASH) As always, my real and virtual office door is always open, so please don’t’ hesitate to drop me a line at editor@rpmmag.com (notice there’s no dash in there). I promise your message always comes directly to me and I will always be the one answering. In fact, if you don’t hear back from me within 48 hours that means I didn’t get the email. Thanks for reading and enjoying your RPM MAGAZINE for almost 20 years!!

ver wonder what it would be like to be one of the very lucky owners (and driver) of a factory race car or one of the legendary A/FX cars built and piloted by the pioneers of drag racing? Michigan’s Al McKnight did, and took matters into his own hands to make it happen.
“My goal was to find and build an A/ FX Comet to like-new condition. Think of it as building a car how Sox or Nicholson would build one today. I felt this would be the only way I would understand what it’s like to own and drive one from new,” explained McKnight. Nearly two years into his search for
a donor, McKnight would find a solid body in Tennessee with all its trim intact. After a number of phone calls and nice drive south, the car would be in McKnight’s garage by August 2007 where the arduous task of total disassembly, labeling, and bagging parts and fasteners would begin. The shell was then bolted

McKnight contacted Ernie at EC1 Race Cars in Davison, MI about building a chassis for the Comet. “Ernie and I hit it off immediately and in July 2011, I rolled my shell on a cart into his shop.” It wasn’t long, actually just a few months later in September that same year,

t started innocently enough at some point in the mid to late 1970s. Depending on who you ask, guys like Gary Kollofski, Steve Lisk, and Scott Sullivan were some early pioneers
to emulate the look of an NHRA pro stocker on a titled, plated, and quasi-legal street car. Although those early iterations included classic body styles like shoebox Chevys, Dodge Challengers, and Chevy Novas
respectively, what they didn’t have for the style was a name. As the trend grew, so too did the car mag coverage—which eventually gave birth to the name: pro street. To open a hot rod or car mag in the mid
to late 1980s, you’d be inclined to believe that the only build style that even existed was pro street. As the game continued to elevate, those classic body styles became too familiar and made it harder and harder

der or preferably through the hood. However, a funny thing happened in the early to mid-1990s. As quickly as those mags lauded pro street as the “next big thing” and championed its dominance as the only
build style of any significance or importance just a few years prior, they all but abandoned it. No longer were there multiple features of fairgrounds cruisers and all assortment of all things fat tire month after month.

THAT REAR END, THOUGH... The Monte Carlo looks wicked with the cool RC Components billet wheels and steamroller tires out back. The miles-deep paint adds to the appeal, as does the pin-on fiberglass hood.

MASSAGED TO PERFECTION Paint and body was handled by friend Matt Spencer, brother Matt Fetterhoff, and Fetterhoff himself in his own garage. The factory rear spoiler and factory-style rally stripes add appeal while contrasting with the pro street rolling stock nicely. Pro street was unceremoniously shown the door like the van craze and the “street freaks” trends of the 1970s. More than a few automotive journalists seemed to relish its demise and dance on its grave while joyously declaring “pro street is DEAD!” Except it wasn’t. And while RPM was never one to
claim any build was “dead” (as proven by the steady stream of regular pro street features since our very inception), others haven’t been so kind. In a desperate (and honestly pathetic) attempt to try to lure in new advertisers and readers, the very same people who celebrated pro street’s dominance
Helical Asymmetrical Oil Pump Technology
Melling has improved the heart-beat of the traditional internal gear pump. It is now significantly smoother through the use of new helical asymmetrical gears. The new gear design provides the engine with an improved flow of oil without the usual pulsing found in traditional gear pumps. The reduction in the p ressure ripple from the pump will also provide benefits to the distributor and camshaft drive.

IT’S ALIVE in the ’80s did the same with pro touring in the ’90s and 2000s, all the while claiming pro street was “out of style” or otherwise unfit for a modern build. Problem was, many people still loved the look of a “pro stocker with plates” and weren’t feeling the vibe of a ’60s-era muscle car with blingy wheels, rubber band tires, and a relentless need to navigate traffic cones. One such enthusiast was likely Cass City, Michigan’s Steve Fetterhoff. “I bought this car in 2009 because I have always liked the SS Monte Carlo body style,”

However, if there were giggles and smiles from naysayers before the project kicked off in 2009, the grins are all Fetterhoff’s today. The car is an immaculate depiction of modern pro street, starting first with the incredible craftsmanship on the chassis. Greg Leidecker of the Chassis Shop in Yale,

Michigan kicked things off right by buzzing out the factory floorpans and firewall and constructing a chromoly tube chassis from scratch. Up front, a pair of Aerospace Components struts smooth the bumps, while a custom ladder bar setup on AFCO Big Gun shocks does the
same for the Moser fabbed 9-inch differential. With the chassis fab handled, Leidecker lowered the body in place and handled all the tinwork, as well. Fetterhoff then took delivery of the car and pulled it completely apart in his home shop, sending the chassis,
suspension components, and all tinwork off for powder coating. Bodywork ensued next, and with the assistance of friend Matt Spencer, brother Matt Fetterhoff, and son Ethon, Steve and crew promptly prepped the Chevy for color. The pin-on fiberglass hood was convert-

ed to bolt-on with Riviera hinges, but the remainder of the factory components were untouched. Spencer sprayed the deep, rich coat of Sherwin Williams Roma Red Pearl basecoat/clearcoat finish along with gray metallic pearl rally stripes before also completing final color sanding and polish. Inside, Fetterhoff reinstalled the now-coated tinwork, floor pans, trans tunnel, and tubs and handled the re-wire and plumbing himself. The car
retains all working lights, power windows and the factory dash. Tires and wheels for the Chevy consist of RC Components black and machined wheels, with 15x3 Exile S units shod with Mickey Thompson tires spinning up front and portly 15x15 Comp S double beadlocked hoops with Hoosier skins in back. The final step in the build was to slide the potent mouse motor into position and fire it up. “I had a pretty
stout 434 in my other car and decided it would do well in the Monte, too,” Fetterhoff said. Roland Kenske of Caro MotorSports started with a Dart Iron Eagle block with raised cam location and equipped it with a Howards Pro Max stroker crank, Callies Ultra H-Beam rods, and 14.0:1 Diamond pistons. A COMP 55mm roller cam with custom 4/7 swap is spun via an Exceldyne timing belt drive kit, and a pair of heavily massaged Brodix aluminum heads fa-
cilitate the air exchange into and out of the combustion chambers. Up top, a port-matched Edelbrock Glidden twopiece aluminum intake is crowned with an 1,100 CFM Pro Systems carb and a custom port nitrous system was installed by Jeff Prock of Applied Nitrous Technology. Backing the 865-horse (n/a) mill is a 2-speed PowerGlide transmission with a BTE 1.80 gearset and a PTC stall converter. A DynoTech aluminum driveshaft sends
the power rearward. In true pro street fashion, absolutely every component on the car is painted, powder coated, or polished. All told, the build consumed four years, but as Fetterhoff says, “I don’t think it will ever be ‘done.’” And whether he was talking about his killer-cool Monte Carlo or the entire trend of pro street, we’d have to agree, Steve. It won’t ever be “done.” It’s alive!

Hours later and a few more instructions it finally met his approval for paint. to paint my engine bay for me, before I put the 572 big block in it. At that time, I shared the vision I had for my car with Matt with the hopes of convincing him to paint the entire car for free in exchange for all publicity and attention I had projected she would get. It’s important to note that during this sales pitch we were complete strangers that were introduced by a mutual friend, who naturally endorsed and attested my skills. Having never met me before, Matt politely declined

the opportunity. He did, however, agree to paint the engine bay, and educate me on how intricate and labor intensive his level of excellence was. I accepted his gracious offer and the beginning of our relationship was born right then and there. Over the course of time, I continued to do my best to convince Matt to paint the entire car. Through my relentless pursuit and bartering skills, he agreed to wet sand and buff it. Matt and his incredible staff were able to polish the
proverbial “turd” of a shell into an impressive luster. When I finally finished my car, she looked amazing to say the least. However, the overall quality of the paint was still way below the level of excellence that the rest of the car exhibited. The first six months after completion, I had a whirlwind schedule with her. She won awards everywhere we went and earned her keep winning a lot of grudge and street races. (Because show cars can’t be fast right?) I was also asked to be
3 a featured exhibitor at some of the biggest shows in our tri-state area. My car was quickly becoming a celebrity, and I was the proud Dr. Frankenstein loving every minute of it. During this time, Matt asked me to come to his shop and work on some high-level cars that had come in for repair. Slowly, we were able to develop our relationship during these “shop talk” sessions. Recently, he admitted to me that when we first met, he truly doubted I’d be able to
build the car I pitched to him alone in my home shop. I can’t say that I blame him. Seriously, what kind of nut job has the mad skills and perseverance to build a world-class pro street car by himself, along with the ability to see it finished long before it actually is? He went on to say he’d be honored to paint my car, if I was still interested in having him do it. This time he pitched me on how perfect everything was but the paint, and how his shop and incredible skill set
could take my car to a whole new level. The only downside was that I’d have to disassemble a completely finished car to do the intricate work he had planned. Not only was this process going to be extremely hard on me, but also not having the car in my shop during this time would be excruciating, given the intense OCD I have. Don’t get me wrong, I am 100% sold on his ability to create art with his gifts and talents. I am literally sold to the point that I think I’d be afraid of ever racing the car

So I hate to sound like a spoiled brat, but do I allow him to paint my car and completely throw my OCD into an epic tailspin? Do I risk the chance that I’ll be afraid of ever using her again for all the reasons I built her in the first place? My sickness is so severe that just thinking about removing the body panels, doors, hood, trunk, and taping the engine and interior off, is enough to make me break out in hives. Not to mention, every piece under the car has been painted, treated, and loomed to the highest level of detail. Have you ever seen the amount of dust that lurks in a busy body shop? Will I ever be able to detail her to perfection again? Can my brain handle this or will you find me on the ground in my shop clutching my chest from the stress attack I am almost certain to have? I’m hoping by sharing this story with all of you, I am helping prepare myself for the inevitable transformation, which I’ll undoubtedly write about in a future article. As for my friend Matt, I have just two questions for you: Why couldn’t you have just agreed to paint the car when she was a roller? And this should only take two-three days at the most… right? Until next time – keep wrenching!

Michael Kelly had that vision and brought it to fruition. What inspired him to build such a beast? “I had an Escalade that I bought before the CTS-V. I was at the dealership getting the Escalade serviced when the CTS-V first came out. I saw it and knew right then that I wanted one,” said Kelly. Mike finally put the word out to Sean O’Grady of Atlanta Street Cars, who also works at a local dealership, to locate a
Cadillac CTS-V for him, and in 2014 Sean found a 2009 CTS-V with only 20,000 miles. The car was originally driven by the owner of the dealership and had been meticulously maintained. “I bought the CTS-V with the sole intention of modifying it,” added Kelly. Even Mike’s Escalade had been modified and he admits that he has always been a racer and bought the CTS-V strictly to race. He liked that car and the fact that it is
supercharged from the factory, so why not add a little more to the mix. As a youngster, Mike and his father used to race model cars and were former National Model Car Champions. So, the next step became obvious, once he became old enough to drive, when he bought his first car within the first three hours after the sale he began modifying his new ride. “It’s just something that I do. reached out to Vengeance Racing and after a performance tweak, on the very first pass the car knocked almost a full second off with just light changes. “I knew that’s where I wanted to be,” he added.
“I had kind of maxed out the CTS-V’s performance, unless I dug deeper into the car,” he said with a smile. The more competitive he got with the Caddy, and with the other CTS-V’s in the
world, the more he knew that he had made the right decision and now, Kelly says that it’s the fastest stock blower car in the world @ 170.24 miles per hour in the ½ mile. The only car that is close
to running the numbers that Mike’s car is generating is another Vengeance Cadillac that is 3 1/2 miles per hour slower. Visually, what sets this Cadillac CTS-V apart from all of the others is the
wing, parachute, carbon fiber trunk lid and the carbon fiber hood. With a wicked stance and the eye-catching black paint and wheels, it is one vicious luxury car. “Very few CTS-Vs have

ingly questioned if I had turned on the nitrous bottle as he handed me my time slip that showed my first sub ten second pass.” said Mike. “That was the fastest pass the car had ever made.” The team had been fight-
ing the car and then everything seemed to just fall into place. The next pass they backed up the record with a 9.20 run. All in all, it was an incredible day for Mike Kelly. Another milestone was on a “blower only” pass that pushed the car to a 170.24 mph run in the ½-mile. Mike’s buddy in Texas who owns a CTS-V with an aftermarket blower has seen 170.25 mph, so when Mike’s was doing 170.24 with the smaller stock size supercharger and less mods, he was “blown” away (forgive the pun). “I think that I got the last laugh, we were shooting hard for that one,” Mike said with a smile. Mike plans to start spraying the car more
frequently as he only hit it with a 50 shot so far. With a number of changes, the car is now ready for the 200 shot and Kelly is more than willing to push the CTS-V to a new world record in quarter mile drag racing. With the half-mile record in hand, he wants to push the envelope and has his sights set on a 180 mile per hour pass to reset it. The car has seen a 1.28 second sixty foot time but Mike and the guys at Vengeance want to cut that to at least a 1.25. Mike Kelly and his blown/nitroused Cadillac 2009 CTS-V are living proof that you don’t have to sacrifice luxury for speed. You just have to know the right people!

he British manufactured handbuilt AC Ace is what started the amazing story of the Cobra by Carroll Shelby. Shelby approached AC Cars and asked if they would slightly modify one of their Aces to fit a V8 engine. Shelby approached Chevrolet first, however they did not take him up on the offer as they did not want competition for the Corvette, Ford however, did. Despite the financial disaster of the original Cobra program, the cars became legendary, somehow gaining a following that continued to grow and before long the Shelby Cobras had a market several times larger than when the cars were originally brought to market. Today,
original production Shelby Cobras sell for millions. In fact, as recently as 2017 (following Shelby’s death in 2012) in the form of the AC Mrk1 260 Legacy, authentic licensed cars were produced in limited numbers. Cobra “kit cars” eventually hit the market and complete turnkey offerings from various companies started to surface. Nowadays, it’s easy to find a number of quality reproductions that offer most anything you can imagine in a Cobra replica. Enter Chris Miller, the proud owner and driver of one wild, and sometimes wheelstanding, Cobra. Miller started racing street cars while in high school in Bartlesville Ok. “They had high school drags and that’s when I fell

Following school, Miller stepped away from drag racing and took time to raise a family, however he kept his hand in the car culture by building show cars and doing the “show thing” for a number of years. “One of my big show cars went to a private collection and

museum and afterwards I found myself wanting the thrill of racing again. To top that off, my daughters were older now and encouraging me to get back into racing. Well that was all I needed,” added Miller. Like so many others, Miller had always loved the curvy body and high horsepower motors of the Cobra, so in 2012 he
purchased a Backdraft Racing Cobra with a stout 427R small block. The car was road race prepared. “I got back into racing with a factory built race car built for road racing, so that is what I did,” explained Miller. “About 6 months in I realized that I didn’t get the need for speed that I expected, I guess turns and corners was not my

performance levels joined classic American muscle at drag strips across the country. And the LS movement was right around the corner. The only problem was that heads-up street-car style drag racing didn’t
exist. Oh, sure, the NMCA had some events and Fun Ford Weekend was at its height, but 90% of most of your local tracks didn’t even know there was a .400 Pro-Tree setting in their Compulink system.
What was an enterprising street racer to do? Well, if you were Michael Young and Dr. Jamie Meyer, you simply started your own racing organization. It sounds so simple, but it didn’t happen overnight.
2
3 2 & 3: Long-time small tire street car drag racer Dave Laurer (you might remember Laurer’s wild wheel-standing Olds-powered Cutlass from back in the day) makes a hit in his twin turbo small block Ford Mustang. Here, Laurer wrenches in the pits to dial-in the Mustang for eliminations.
The two had been routinely bracket racing at New York International Raceway Park (Leicester, NY), and they were attending as many street-car shootouts as they could get to. Eventually, they decided to try to bring that heads-up, pro-tree excitement back to their home track. They approached then-track owner, Bob Metacalf and he was receptive to the idea. Once they had approval to run an event, it opened up all sorts of new questions. What classes would they run? What rules would they use? How would they get the word out? (Remember, this pre-dated the internet.) And, how would they afford trophies and prizes? Enter Patricia “Mom” Meyer. She had been a part of the planning meetings—heck, they were taking place in her living room—and she
often attended the races with her son, Dr. Jamie. What drew her into the program was the idea of giving street racers a chance to get to their local track where they were much more safe. With $50 from Mom Meyer and $50 from fellow bracket racer Henry Blau, MOMS (for Mustang On Mustang Shootout) Racing was formed. The first event drew 25 racers, and the track management soon learned that this style of racing attracted a different breed of racer. And, there were fans. Lots and lots of fans that loved the wild small-tired cars and dead-even drag racing. Early on, the program had some unique qualities that separated it from the other national events. MOMS Racing didn’t have a cash payout. Street racers were welcome to bet amongst

themselves, but the organization only handed out trophies and small prizes (parts, tools, gift certificates, etc.). The points program rewarded being fast in qualifying, but you got the same points for a victory in the Elimination Round. Oh, yeah, the Elimination Round. Partly driven
by fitting the entire program into a Friday night and partly done to add excitement, there’s only one Elimination Round at MOMS Racing. That’s right, you’ve only got one chance to win or you have to think about it for a month. Sounds a lot like a real street race, doesn’t it? Fun, exciting, and very,

As often happens, both Michael and Dr. Jamie moved away from the upstate New York region, and the future of MOMS Racing was in question. But, once again, Mom Meyer stepped in to help keep the program running. Teamed with Andy Gallo and Event Director Melanie Crown-Gallo, the trio would lead MOMS Racing for over 20 years with car counts over 100 at some of their shows. By 2017, after 25 years, the program had started to lose its luster. There was still a core group of

hardcore racers, but competition and complacency had started to creep in. Plus, the track had come under new ownership, which brought in a whole new learning curve for both organizations. The team needed a new direction and a renewed vision that would set them up for the next 25 years. Enlisting the help of the founders (Mike and Jamie really never went too far), the team decided that a complete rules change was in order. They had tried allbrand or invitational events in the past with good results, and many owners of Brand-X machines wanted in on the action. In the end,
the rules committee, anchored by Rob Chandler, Jim Noto, Doug Beers, Brian Krakowski, and Doug Vangstrum developed a four-class rules structure that allowed street racers of all brands to join in the fun. And, for the first time, MOMS Racing opened the rules for eighth-mile racing to accommodate the faster cars. The track, now known as Empire Dragway and owned by Jerry and Clara Scaccia, has hired long-time heads-up racing community member Patrick Budd to help manage the facility. Budd has played an integral role in the new vision of MOMS Racing. (Pro tip: If you want to start a heads-up

rebranding of a 25-year-old product. The name has been changed to “Mom’s Racing” to keep things familiar while showing the respect the matriarch of the organization deserves. There’s a new logo, a

website to be built, and a renewed effort on social media. But, the key to the success of Mom’s Racing has been the talented, all-female management team. Mom Meyer herself is a long time performance car enthusiast who
has often entered into “speed contests” to entertain herself. And, Melanie has proven herself a very talented event coordinator with over 125 successful, heads-up races under her watchful eye. RPM Magazine caught
up with Mom and Mel at their June 22 event at Empire Dragway. While threatening skies dampened some attendance, 45 street racers still made their way to the starting line. The majority of the cars were late model Mustangs, but

Dedicated to introducing street racers to the safer confines of their local drag strip, and anchored by Mom Meyer, the renewed future of Mom’s Racing certainly looks bright. Check the sidebars for the class structure to see where you would fit in, or reach out to your author, Michael Young, with any questions on rules or sponsorship opportunities. With only three events left in the 2018 season, it’s time to get to the track!

ave you ever thought about what it would be like to be strapped into the seat of a 1,500 horsepower Pro Stock drag car? You leave the starting line at
10,500 rpm, accelerating as you travel 1,320 feet, shifting a Liberty fivespeed transmission to a top speed of 213 miles per hour in only 6.47 seconds! Then grabbing the parachute release handle to pop the dual chutes
and slow the car, as you gently apply the carbon fiber brakes at the top end of the quarter mile. The sheer excitement makes the adrenalin flow, the heart race, adding to that sensory overload that takes

STRIP

1 er. You want to go faster and faster, as you chase your personal best elapsed time and top speed during each and every qualifying or elimination round. But to be able to mix it up with the big boys, you have to start at the bottom and work your way up to the top. That’s how National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) Pro Stock driver, John (Jack) Gaydosh, Jr. began his driving career. With over
30 years of working in the automotive industry under his belt, Jack has perfected his craft from years of experience and perseverance. Part of that valuable experience he gained, began with his six year stent in the U.S. Army as a Motor Pool Sergeant. After the Army, he decided that it was time to have some fun and put his valuable knowledge of automotive repair to better use.
Beginning in the grassroots sportsman ranks of drag racing, Jacks new found passion fueled his desire as he began to crawl, then walk and soon hit the ground running. He gained valuable exposure to the sport in bracket racing. Bracket style drag racing can be tough to wrap your head around, but let’s just say that the computer works out the differences in the cars at the starting
line based on dial-in times (a driver’s estimate of what their car can run) and at the finishline the cars should be side by side. The key is to not run faster than your dial-in. There’s a lot more to it than that, and even a science to winning, but there’s no doubt that it takes a ton of skill and ingenuity to be competitive in bracket racing. Which makes it an excellent way
to master the sport. As Jack’s skill level increased, he felt the need to gain more exposure in the professional ranks of the sport so he volunteered for Ron Krisher’s NHRA Pro Stock team in the 2005-2006 racing seasons, as an engine specialist. While working for Ron, he found time to race his own car and was one of the first engine builders to

run a 7-second ET with a naturally-aspirated Pontiac engine. He rose quickly through the ranks of the Pro N/A Ram Racing Series and the Outlaw Pontiac Drag Racing Series to become the Series Champion in 2008. He was known for chopping down the tree and taking the win! “Reaction times are critical,” John said. “I love the closeness of Pro Stock. I actually like how close the field is. All the decisions that you have to make before you go up and run. That’s why I chose to run it and I think it’s really the only class that I would ever race professionally.” Many drag races have been won on the starting line with the holeshot (reacting to the green light quicker than your opponent.). This is Jack’s tenth year as a professional driver, racing the NHRA Pro Stock class since 2008. When he made the decision to step up, it came with a lot of additional expenses. Things
like moving from a pull-behind trailer to double stacker with a diesel pusher. Then of course, you need an NHRA-certified pro stock chassis at the cost of over $120,000 depending on shocks, brakes, and steering components. Not to count all of the carbon fiber body panels and essentials for the interior. Then you have to develop an engine program. “With Chris and Lester McGaha on board, it makes our engine program a whole lot better, making it more feasible for both teams to share data and tune-ups,” Jack explained. A pro stock engine can cost as little as $45,000 and up to $85,000, while an engine rental per event weekend can cost between $5,000-$15,000 dollars. So, if you have a cool quarter of a million dollars lying around, you too can own a professional Pro Stock team. Without a full-time major sponsor, Jack has raced 10 of the 20-plus NHRA national events every season since 2008. He has successfully pulled together a crew that has been with him for a number of years that are passionate about what they do, strive for perfection, and have never wavered in their support, passion, and trust in Jack—qualities that are essential in any type of professional racing. The crew is made up of long-time friend and fellow bracket
racer Bob “Clutch” Crouse who handles all of the multi-disc clutch set-ups, transmission maintenance, and drives the rig. Bobby Gaydosh, Jack’s younger brother, and Bob “Woody” Wood both serve as back-half specialists on the car. Taking care of the team is Angela Gaydosh, Jack’s sister-in-law. She handles feeding the crew as well as the guests and doubles as the social media person and track photographer for the team. Jack handles the driving tasks as well as overseeing the suspension changes and the tune-up. Everyone pitches in, no matter how significant or insignificant the tasks are. From unloading the car to setting up and striking the awning, to making sure that everything is packed up, it is a total team effort. What makes this monumental effort payoff? Why struggle with a daytime job to make ends meet only to spend your hardearned money on fees, parts, and gas just so you can make the very next event? What is the drive behind it all? The answer is that it becomes embodied in your spirit. You love the challenge of the competition, the atmosphere of the drag strip, even the fellowship of the people from all walks of life that become part of your drag racing family. You do it for the fans, who visit your pits, ask for your autograph, and thank you for being

ast month we took data acquisition to another level by adding a wideband oxygen sensor and an exhaust gas temperature probe in every primary tube in RPM Mag’s 4 Lug Thug. We took the headers down to Tick Performance, Mt. Airy North Carolina, to have Matt Goins add the eight
O2 sensor and eight EGT bungs. Back at our Virginia shop, we installed the sensors and wired up the electronics from Innovate Motorsports. Now, with the physical install done, we just have to set everything up in our Holley Dominator EFI software so we can use all our new data. Typically, most users of the Innovate Motor-
dash display, we used the 5-volt analog outputs from each Innovate device wired to 16 of the many available 5V inputs on the Holley Dominator ECU. To get everything ready for combat, we just have to calibrate the wideband O2s and set up the inputs in the Holley software.

We can make changes and work on wiring while sitting in the driver or passenger seat. The VFN fiberglass dash snaps on covering everything except the Holley 7-inch touchscreen display. 2: After getting back from Tick Performance with our headers, the O2 sensors and EGT probes were installed and the headers were put back on the car. The Innovate HBX-1 O2 extender / heat sinks are installed between the O2 sensors and the bungs Matt welded to the primary tubes. They protect the sensors from the direct heat of lit candles like ol 4 Lug is known for. If you look closely you can see the EGT probes under the headers that go into each primary underneath, right at the header flanges at the head.

We then select “Inputs” on the “Inputs Outputs” box on the left column. Choose from available inputs and name them whatever you want. Check the enable boxes and pick 5-volt in each drop down.
4: You will need to go in and configure each input individually. In the configure screen, start out by picking “Custom 5V” Then fill in each selection as shown here. On the Calibration Table, start with 7.35AFR at 0 volts and end with 22.39AFR at 5 volts. Populate the values in between to make a straight diagonal line from 0 to 5 volts.

Any new inputs you configure will show up at the top of the Pin Map screen under Unassigned Inputs. 8 & 9: Now we need to calibrate the LC-2 wideband modules before firing the car. Start by disconnecting the sensors from the cables. Turn on the ignition switch without starting the car to apply power to the LC-2 modules. The status LEDs will light up green for 2 seconds then turn red and flash a two blink sequence indicating an Error 2 condition, meaning no sensors are detected. Leave the power on for at least 30 seconds while it is flashing red.

10 & 11: Next, turn the power off and reattach the oxygen sensors to the sensor cables. The sensors will need to be in free air, not in the exhaust pipes or a room full of fumes from a recently running engine. Turn the power back on and the status lights will light up green again for 2 seconds while the system initializes. The status lights will then start flashing green twice a second meaning the sensors are heating up to their operating temperature. After 30-60 seconds, the status light will flash green for a series of very quick flashes indicating the sensor calibration is being performed. When they light up solid green, the calibration is finished and the widebands are ready to use.

RPM PROJECT CAR 12
12: Right away on the first use of the new data, we discovered a problem that developed from the car sitting all winter with pump gas in the system. Here, you see a data log showing the 8 wideband oxygen sensors in use. 7 of the cylinders are fairly close to each other before any tuning, but one cylinder is off in left field. #4 cylinder, indicated by the purple trace is not even in the ball park with the other 7. At this sample point, the other 7 cylinders are in the 12 AFR range while #4 cylinder was reading 16.5AFR.

107
RPM PROJECT CAR 13: The EGTs showed the problem also with the #4 cylinder reading almost half the temperature of the other 7 cylinders. This is a good example of how EGTs alone can mislead you to a fuel condition. You would normally think a colder cylinder may mean it is rich and being cooled by the extra fuel, but here it is likely that it is so lean at times that it isn’t making enough energy to get as hot as the others. The injector had become clogged with chalky residue mess from the 10% ethanol pump gas that was used to move the car around after the last race last season. The injector was swapped out and the problem went away. I think I’m really going to like all this data to work with! It already helped catch a problem before it even made it to the track. Imagine what would have happened if we would have made a pass with one cylinder AFR points leaner than needed.

PRODUCTS & INNOVATIONS
WHO GOES?
WEEGO!
>> Portable power for your ride...and pretty much everything else, too!
W
e’re pretty careful what products we bring into the RPM MAG circle. We want to be sure they live up to their
marketing during our testing before we pass them onto readers. In fact, there are many products we’ve tried that simply do not make the cut into the pages of RPM due to poor
performance, but we’re confident most every reader will want to try out this month’s P&I. So before you read on, you might as well toss out all those cheap little LED flashlights,
the tiny power banks that you have kicking around that never really worked right or gave up after a few months, every phone charger that promised the world but gave you only headaches.

RVs, ATVs and even boats will never be so well equipped with jump start boosting capability and backup/emergency/ charging 12v USB power as they will once you have a Weego onboard. power, easy to use, full of options and just downright cool! In a normal year we have to boost our shop vehicles (especially the older ones) about half dozen times. Normally we’d use a large (at one time considered ultra-portable) 25-pound booster box that we would have to drag out or carry in the back of the
work truck, especially during winter. The point is, that if we breakdown and can’t get a quick boost, we’re out time and money. So we need portable, compact power. We had a look out back of the RPM shop and came up with a few ways to put our Weego 22 and Weego 66 to the test and drained a

RPM EXCLUSIVES few shop vehicle batteries down then jump started them with the Weego. We boosted a 1.1-liter 3-cylinder diesel tractor, 800cc 3-cylinder gas UTV, and a 5-liter gas engine with our Weego 22, and a 6.8-liter gas and 3.5-liter turbo diesel with our Weego 66. Every boost went like clockwork and afterwards the Weegos had power to spare. The built-in dual LED flashlight and USB power port, along with amazing boosting capabilities means you get big power in a little package. There’s no excuse to park for ice cream during the dog days of summer in your killer street car then have to boost it with your buddy’s truck because the battery is weak. No more coming out to go to work on a cold winter morning only to hear that haunting click click click. The Weego 22 will boost up to a 5-liter gas engine and will fit easily in any glove box or console. In fact, it will almost fit in your coat pocket! The 66, while a little larger, has three times the power, capable of jump starting a 10-liter gas engine or 5-liter diesel, and will still fit in most any glove box or take up next to no space in your trunk or hatch. One other thing we really liked was that there’s no huge cables to get untangled and connect, or large booster pack to balance under the hood while jump starting—it’s just this little red box—making jump starting truly a one person job! After giving them to our Editor In Chief for a week, we couldn’t pry them back out of his hands. “This is a must-have for any street car owner, hot rodder, racer, off-road enthusiast, or for that matter anyone that has any type of vehicle on land or water. Having the Weego in our RPM rigs and trailers gives us a whole new peace of mind. I even threw one in the glove box of our UTV for the trails…and we had to use it to jump start someone else’s ATV!” As the people at Paris Corporation, the manufacturers of Weego Portable Power products,

6: Step one: charge them. Both Weegos tested are also water resistant (not water proof – READ THE OWNERS MANUAL) and boast 1000 charging cycles. They also utilize their patented Smarty Clamps to prevent incorrect connection.
7 7: The series of lights on each Weego tested indicates the % of power remaining. Don’t mock my 5 year old mini smartphone. After being dropped, lost for days, rained on, and tossed around a few times, it still works like new.
8 8: Looks like some good test candidates out in the back lot!

9: We hooked up our 22 to an 800cc UTV first. We’re not in the habit of running our batteries down for the fun of it, but in the interest of testing products we’re game for it! Plus, the fact is, it happens to us all, and just one jump start from Weego pays for it several times over!
9
10 10: We just decided to keep the 22 in the UTV for keeps. And our Editor actually used it to help a fellow rider!

11 & 12: Our diesel lot tractor can be a bear to start, especially in the dead of winter when it comes time to plow or blow snow. With the 22 hooked up it was smooth going. We really liked the small form factor of these products, notice how easily it sits in the tight confines of the tractor. In the past we had to balance a large 25-pound battery box in between the cowl and firewall.
We started from a clean sheet to create the most efficient, most advanced supercharger ever created for GM LS engines. Our revolutionary new intercooler design delivers more power than the competition run-after-run, regardless of how hot it is outside. With factory-like drivability, a bypass valve for enhanced fuel economy, and OEM-level fit and finish that looks great under the hood, Magnuson's Heartbeat is true horsepower without compromise.
