Hell’s Gate consists of a steep climb up a chute that narrows as it nears the top. Reliance on a good spotter is advised on the upper part as a mistake here can mean a series of rolls all the way to the bottom. Just before Tip-Over Challenge the Escalator obstacle is encountered. It involves a series of climbs up a V shaped notch in the slickrock. The correct line wanders back and forth attempting to keep the tires out of the bottom of the notch, at times pressing the sidewalls against the rock sides, at others featuring a front tire pawing at the air. Once up the Escalator, Tip-Over Challenge and Rubble Trouble still await.

Semi-Float or Full-Float? Making an Ultimate Axle Upgrade
To get the most out of your Jeep®, you may have considered axle upgrades—but have you tackled the question of semi-floating axles versus full-floating axles? Understanding the differences between the two can help you make decisions that ensure the most fun and the least downtime on the trail.
A semi-floating axle system transmits torque while the axle shaft itself bears the weight of the vehicle. This design affords a limited load capacity, yet these axles are lighter in weight. In a full-floating axle system, the vehicle weight is supported by the hub and axle housing: not by the axle shaft itself. Since the axle shaft’s only job is to transmit torque, this system can offer greater strength than a semi-float axle of equivalent size.

If your Jeep currently rides on a semi-float axle and you’re in the market for an axle upgrade, it may seem at first glance that a full-float axle is the only way to go. And while it’s true that full-floaters are stronger by design, there are advantages to upgrading to a tougher- than-stock semi-floating axle.

8-Bolt Pattern
The major consideration revolves around the wheel end parts. Most full-float axles have an 8-bolt pattern, while many semi-float axles feature 5- or 6-bolt wheels and brakes. If your vehicle already has a semi-floater and you upgrade to a more robust semi-floater, you can reuse all of your wheels and brakes! Otherwise, you’ll need a complete, costly overhaul to an 8-bolt wheel and brake package.
Maybe you’re thinking that sticking with a semi-floating axle is the way to go, but you don’t want to compromise on trail-ready toughness and premium performance. For a direct-fit, bolt-in solution that’s built for superior strength inside and out, Dana now offers the Ultimate Dana 60® Semi-Float axle. Previously, the iconic Ultimate Dana 60® axle was only available as a full-floater. Now, you get all those benefits—like Spicer® nickel chromoly steel axle shafts, Spicer ring and pinion gearing, a nodular iron diff cover, heavy-duty brackets, and more—and all the convenience of adhering to a semi-floating axle design. As an added advantage, these axles present a cost savings by allowing you to reuse the brakes that came stock on your Jeep. These semi-float axles are also a perfect choice to match up with an Ultimate Dana 44™ front axle, which supports the reuse of your factory 5-lug hubs.
Hard-core off-roading takes a tremendous toll on any axle, so upgrading to an axle that’s built for extreme performance is a popular, practical modification. But for vehicles with semi-floating rear axles, an upgrade to a full-floating axle isn’t necessarily the only answer. After doing the research and considering all the options, you may find that a semi-float axle that’s specifically engineered for maximum strength and durability is an ideal choice for all your adventures.
