1955) Beautiful original panoramic concept painting by Eyvind Earle for Lady and the Tramp, depicting the two dogs seated on a leaf-covered sidewalk in front of the house of Lady’s owners, Jim Dear and Darling. Earle captures the scene with a patent tenderness, adding soft shadows and fading light to the romantic New England setting. He pulls your attention to the title pooches and then fills the periphery with a remarkable sense of peace and prosperity—the well-kept frontage and stately New Haven residence essentially the canine equivalent to a fairy tale castle. Accomplished in tempera on 23 x 9 artist’s board, signed in the lower right corner in black paint, “Eyvind Earle.” In fine condition, with tack holes to corners, and a few trivial scuffs. 1955) Exquisite original panorama concept storyboard painting by Eyvind Earle from Lady and the Tramp, showing the title canines walking on a park sidewalk during the iconic ‘Bella Notte’ sequence. In his distinctive style, Earle captures the nighttime scene with a charming sense of secrecy and isolation, centrally placing the dogs to emphasize their growing bond amid a jealous crowd of large trees and ferns. True to the film, Earle adds a touch of humor with the placement of a ‘Wet Cement’ sign and the telltale paw prints left by Lady and Tramp, who then stop at a fresh heart symbol—likewise recently made by a passing couple—before adding to it marks of their own. In the movie, the heart is engraved with ‘JM’ and ‘EB,’ which many believe are the initials for Lady’s owners, Jim and Elizabeth Brown. Accomplished in tempera on 21 x 9 artist’s board, signed in the lower right corner in silver graphite by Earle. In fine condition, with tack holes to corners. Starting Bid $1000
panorama concept storyboard painting by Eyvind Earle from Lady and the Tramp, showing the title canines in a romantic park scene as part of the ‘Bella Notte’ night. With his expert use of color and space, Earle fills the scene magically, making the night come alive above and around the small silhouettes that embrace at the lake’s edge. Gentle light works wonders here, as multicolored lanterns hang dreamily from branches, windows from a house across the water cast their glow, and, like a spotlight on high, the moon sits solemnly between canopies, its soft radiance touching everything below. Accomplished in tempera on 15.5 x 6.25 artist’s board, signed in the lower right corner in paint, “Eyvind Earle.” In fine condition, with tack holes to corners. Disney artist Eyvind Earle, who later became Sleeping Beauty’s production designer, created almost 50 miniature concept sketches for the ‘Bella Notte’ sequence and was a key contributor to the classic film. 1040. Eyvind Earle concept panorama storyboard painting of Prince Philip, Samson, and Maleficent from
Sleeping Beauty. (Walt Disney Studios, 1959) Outstanding original concept storyboard painting by Eyvind Earle for Sleeping Beauty, portraying Prince Phillip and his steed Samson charging into battle against Maleficent, soaring high above as an immense black and purple-bellied dragon. Like many of Earle’s panoramas, he sets the scene from a safe distance, keeping the observer far from harm’s way as he executes the film’s harrowing final conflict—a breathtaking collision of fire and steel, of good versus evil. Maleficent dwarfs the brave horse and knight, riding on a winding, narrow pathway that drops precipitously to either side, as the great winged reptile shoots towards them a stream of bright, wicked flame. The intensity of the action Earle has no doubt mastered, however, nor has he denied us a truly terrible vista, one sparse yet volatile, dominated by a hazy castled backdrop and alive with its cast of jagged rocks and frenzied vines that seem intent on stopping the progress of our heroes. Accomplished in tempera on 24 x 9 artist’s board, with Earle signing in black paint in the lower right corner. In fine condition, with tack holes to the corners. Disney artist Eyvind Earle was Sleeping Beauty’s production designer, and Disney gave him a significant amount of freedom in designing the settings and selecting colors for the film. Earle also painted the majority of the backgrounds himself, and his stylistic influence is readily apparent in the final product. Starting Bid $1000
