‘Why I am an Optimist’— compelling 1932 article draft by Einstein on the state of humanity and the individual— “No man can find his own soul until he strikes a balance in the account between himself and society at large”

13. Albert Einstein Signed Typed Manuscript Draft.

Typed draft of an article entitled “The Individual and the Collective Community. Professor Albert Einstein tells Why I am an Optimist,” signed at the top of the first page in black ink, “Albert Einstein. 15. XI. 32,” six pages, 8.75 x 11.25. The content of this manuscript was later published as the article, ‘Why Civilization Will Not Crash,’ which was featured in the August 12, 1933 issue of Liberty Magazine. The text, which bears some corrections in an editorial hand, in part:

“The optimist affirms, the pessimist denies, life. The pessimist, for all his denial, clings as a rule, to the sweet habit of living. Every man at one time or another asks himself Hamlet’s immortal question ‘To be or not to be.’ If he decides that being is on the whole preferable to not-being he is an optimist, even if he quotes Schopenhauer of the Biblical adage that all is vanity.

I am an optimist.

I affirm life because, whatever may be the destiny of dissolving suns and dissolving universes, there is such a thing as progress and evolution in the cycle of the human species, however brief its existence may be measured in astronomical terms.

I am an optimist in spite of Depression, Famine, Dissatisfaction and the rebirth of Militarism, the Four Riders of the New Apocalypse riding in the bloody train of the World War.” In fine condition, with a rusty paperclip impression to the top edge. A full transcript of the draft can be found online. Starting Bid $1000

Einstein develops a new mathematical formalism for General Relativity

14. Albert Einstein Handwritten Scientific

Manuscript. Significant page of a handwritten scientific manuscript by Albert Einstein, one page, 8.5 x 11, no date but circa 1943. A superb example of Einstein’s creative process and working method, exploring the application of bivector fields to the tensor equations of General Relativity. Bivectorial mathematics deals with the possibility of operationally viewing a field as a composite product of two vectors. At the time of this manuscript’s composition, Einstein was just beginning his efforts to generalize the relativistic theory of gravitation into a fuller unified system of equations integrating electromagnetic field theory. This project of unification and Unified Field Theory would preoccupy Einstein for the remainder of his life, and the present autograph is accordingly to be understood as one of the earliest extant specimens of Einstein’s final approach to Unified Field Theory. Einstein is clearly moving in uncharted waters here, his grasp on the material tentative and the movements subject to reversal and revision—Einstein here striking through an entire sequence of meticulously articulated equations and redrafting sentences even as he is putting pen to paper.

Einstein published two articles on bivector fields in 1944: Bivector Fields I dealt with symmetric field components and Bivector Fields II dealt with antisymmetric components (defined with relation to the affine connection). Submitted simultaneously for publication in 1943, they are Einstein’s only Unified Field Theory papers to appear during World War II. As Einstein himself explained in these papers, his prior attempts at Unified Field had failed because he attempted to change only a single basis for the theory (e.g. by adding a higher spatial dimensionality) whereas Einstein came to realize that ‘a decisive modification of the fundamental concepts is unavoidable.’ Departing therefore from a strict Riemannian metric, Einstein indicates that ‘we have found new concepts and relations which from a logical viewpoint seem simple and natural enough to be of interest.’ But Einstein cautioned, ‘whether we have succeeded in the solution of this physical problem is still uncertain.’

Einstein’s two articles on Bivector Fields were published in English in the Annals of Mathematics. The articles were originally written in German and translated by Einstein’s assistant Bergmann. The Library of Congress contains the finished manuscripts of the two articles. Only a handful of leaves like the present representing early states of the article are known to have survived, and they are of the greatest rarity in private hands. In fine condition. Starting Bid $1000

Rare 1514 pay order for wine and habiliments of war signed by Henry VIII’s ‘alter rex,’ Thomas Wolsey

19. King Henry VIII: Thomas Wolsey Document

Signed. English statesman and Catholic bishop (1473–1530) who served as almoner to King Henry VIII and was made Lord Chancellor, the king’s chief adviser, in 1515. In that role, he was the controlling figure in virtually all matters of state, and was often depicted as an alter rex (‘other king’). After failing to negotiate an annulment of Henry’s marriage to Catherine of Aragon, Wolsey fell out of favor, was stripped of his government titles, and brought up on charges of treason. Exceedingly rare manuscript DS, signed “Thomas Wulcy,” one page, 7 x 8.5, November 25, 1513. Privy Council warrant ordering “Daunce,” John Dauntesey, to make payments in Flanders to Richard Fermour and William Brown, Merchants of the Staple at Calais, of £1000 to be paid to William Copland for the purchase of “artillerye and other habilymentes of Warre” and a further £1000 to be paid to Alan Kyng “for provision of Wyne for the kynges use.” Signed below in ink by five members of the Privy Council: Thomas Wolsey as Cardinal and Archbishop of York; Thomas Howard, 2nd Duke of Norfolk; Charles Somerset, 1st Earl of Worcester; Richard Foxe, Bishop of Winchester; and and Sir Thomas Lovell. Penned in the time of the Anglo-French War (1512-1514), this document is an example of Wolsey’s wide-ranging influence and his abilities to keep English troops supplied and wellequipped. One of the recipients, Richard Fermor, was given a share in the contract for victualing the royal army during the Tournai Campaign of 1513, and he exported large quantities of wheat, flour, beer barrels, cannonballs, harness, and saltpetre. Wolsey would have a key role in negotiating the Anglo-French Treaty of 1514, which secured a temporary peace between the two nations. Starting Bid $1000

Exceedingly rare 1960 autograph of Chairman Mao, signed as he sought to promote the Communist cause in Latin America

28. Mao Tse-tung Signed Invitation. Exceedingly rare

vintage ballpoint signature of Mao Tse-tung on the reverse of a 6.75 x 4.5 Chinese dinner invitation to a Buffet Party hosted by the China-Latin America Friendship Association at the Xinqiao Fandian (Hotel) on Thursday, 27 October 1960 at 6:30 pm, “in order to kindly see off the cultural friendship delegations of Latin American countries.” In fine condition, with minor soiling. Accompanied by a full letter of authenticity from PSA/DNA.

In 1960, Mao was hard at work cultivating relationships with foreign nations as he planned to develop China from an agrarian economy to a socialist world power. Latin American nations leapt to the forefront of potential partners after the Cuban Communist revolution of 1959. The China-Latin America Friendship Association had been established in Beijing earlier that same year, in March 1960, and soon became the general fortress of cultural infiltration into Latin America. The U.S. diplomat Roy R. Rubottom Jr., who served as Assistant Secretary of State for Inter-American Affairs (1957-60), noted that, also in 1960, Mao Zedong appeared to have ‘gone out of his way’ to receive Latin American Communist leaders and to exhort them to give their full backing to the kind of revolution he favored.

Chairman Mao met with multiple Latin American delegations in May 1960, and would go on to host Che Guevara in November. These discussions frequently revolved around the shared struggle against American imperialism, as well as general Communist ideals. As a piece linking Mao to ideological revolutions abroad, this is an extremely desirable and exceptionally rare signature from one of the major political and cultural figures of the 20th century. Starting Bid $10000

Over the years the King sent hundreds of such dogs, all ‘garnished with a good iron collar’ as gifts to the Holy Roman Emperor and the King of France. Henry’s own dogs wore decorative collars of velvet—permitted only to royal dogs—and kid [leather], with or without torettes (spikes) of silver and gold; some were adorned with pearls or the King’s arms and his portcullis and rose badges. His dogs’ coats were of white silk and the dogs had their fur regularly rubbed down with a ‘hair cloth.’ Sixty-five dog leashes were found in Henry’s closet after his death.’ As illustrated by the present document, the King Henry’s hounds were generously outfitted and the royal leash boys were equally handsomely attired.
