One-of-a-kind Hot Discography signed by 40+ jazzmen, including Fats Waller, Joe ‘Tricky Sam’ Nanton, Jimmie Blanton, and Louis Armstrong

605. Jazz Legends: Hot Discography. One-of-a-kind signed book: Hot Discography. Originally published in 1938 in Paris, France, this edition was corrected and reprinted in the USA in 1940 by the Commodore Music Shop, 46 W. 52nd Street, New York, New York. Hardcover rebound in full leather by bookbinder Denis Gouey (preserving all of the pages, signatures, and endpapers), 5.5 x 7.25, 382 pages. Signed on the endpapers (with a handful throughout) in fountain pen by more than 40 important jazz artists, highlighted by Fats Waller, Joe ‘Tricky Sam’ Nanton, Jimmie Blanton, Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington (plus members of his band), and Jimmie Lunceford (plus members of his band). Several signers add their instruments or brief inscriptions to “Zack,” whose full name (“Zack Rottman”) is written on the page with Ellington’s signature; he was evidently a collector who loved jazz, and must have carried this book to several different venues to have signed. This volume is not only musically significant, but significant in black history. First published in France—where black jazzmen, fleeing segregation at home, were welcomed with open arms—and later reprinted by Jewish music executive Milton Gabler (whose Commodore Records released Billie Holiday’s ‘Strange Fruit’ in 1939), this unique book, filled with autographs of jazz legends, is a remarkable time capsule of an era. In overall fine condition, with toning to the first several pages. A complete list of signers is available online at RRAuction.com. Starting Bid $1000

“Presented to The Beatles”— an RIAA sales award for ‘Let It Be’

910. Beatles RIAA Sales Award for ‘Let It Be’. Amazing official white-matte RIAA platinum sales award “Presented to The Beatles to commemorate the sale of more than one million copies of the Apple Records pop single record ‘Let It Be.’” Framed with its disc and plate to an overall size of 13.25 x 17.25; the paper backing features its original New York Frame & Picture label. In fine condition, with expected light scuffing to the wooden frame.

Sales awards made directly for the artist are quite rare and of considerable desirability. RIAA awards presented to The Beatles, however, these examples are virtually unobtainable given the band’s legendary status. This gold record for ‘Let It Be,’ the band’s penultimate and 19th No. 1 hit single in the U.S., only adds to its already immense appeal. Written and sung by Paul McCartney, ‘Let It Be’ was inspired by his late mother Mary Patricia McCartney, who passed away when he was just fourteen. This classic Beatles song proved to be the group’s final single before McCartney announced his departure from the band in April of 1970. Starting Bid $1000

The Beatles’ 1966 tour of America marked their final commercial concert tour, and included historic shows at Shea Stadium and Candlestick Park. Accompanied by a letter of authenticity from noted Beatles expert Frank Caiazzo, who states that it “is highly likely that, after the photo was taken, it was quickly developed and brought back to the event for signing. There was ample time for this to occur, and both the signature style and the type of marker used to sign both match up precisely with those of the ‘Bed In.’ This was a monumental event in the history of John Lennon, which occurred while he was still in The Beatles, during a break from the ‘Abbey Road’ recording sessions. John Lennon signed items directly linked to the ‘Bed in for Peace’ are quite rare and highly desirable.” Starting Bid $1000

Signed title page print from John Lennon’s limited edition ‘Bag One Portfolio’

621. Beatles: John Lennon ‘Bag One’ Signed Litho-

graph. Limited edition 23 x 30 ‘Bag One’ lithograph suite title page released by New York’s Cinnamon Press in 1970, numbered 172/300, prominently signed in pencil, “John Lennon.” In fine condition, with some minor wrinkling to the lower right corner, and a small divot to the lower blank area.

In 1969, as a wedding gift for Yoko, John drew the ‘Bag One Portfolio’—a chronicle of their wedding ceremony, honeymoon, and their plea for world peace in the Bed-In. The following year the artwork was produced in a series of three hundred portfolios of fifteen signed prints each. The majority depict John and Yoko’s most intimate, private moments—upon their first exhibition in London, more than half were deemed ‘indecent’ and confiscated by Scotland Yard. This title page, or frontispiece, features an iconic image from the set and is far scarcer than the prevalent erotic artworks. A wonderful piece from Lennon’s famed series. Starting Bid $300

Originally displayed amongst the hundreds of other signed photos at New York City’s well-known Manny’s Music Store—open from 1933 to 2009, the store’s clientele spanned musical generations from Buddy Holly to Guns N’ Roses. The store was a popular can’t-miss shopping destination for touring acts like the Beatles, Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, Janis Joplin, and Jimi Hendrix. Fully signed Doors photos are virtually nonexistent, and despite its flaws this is a remarkable piece with a musically important association. Starting Bid $500

The Doors erupted onto the music scene with the release of their self-titled debut album and hit single ‘Break On Through (To the Other Side)’ in early January 1967. Their popularity would reach even greater heights when their incendiary second single, ‘Light My Fire,’ dropped on April 24th; the song, which was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame, was famously performed on The Ed Sullivan Show on September 17, 1967, some five-and-ahalf months after Morrison signed this contract. An extremely rare and early agency contract from a true rock and roll legend. Starting Bid $1000

The story of Dylan’s purported Woodstock motorcycle accident has since become a part of music legend. As it goes, on July 29, 1966, Dylan crashed his 500 cc Triumph Tiger 100 motorcycle near his home in Woodstock, New York, an accident that resulted in Dylan suffering lacerations to the face and scalp, a concussion, and breaking several vertebrae. No ambulance was ever called, but, by many accounts, Dylan ended up at the home of his friend Dr. Edward Thaler to recuperate, while in others, he was driven to Middletown Hospital, where, according to Dylan himself, he spent a week. Two other popular theories exist: the motorcycle accident was minor, a mere driveway tip-over, and the crash never happened, both of which feed into the belief that Dylan fabricated the story to exit his current mad rush lifestyle. Crash or no crash, Dylan withdrew from the public and, apart from a few appearances, he did not tour again for almost eight years.
