Prince
An elusive still-sealed example of Prince’s fabled The Black Album
672. Prince: First Pressing of The Black Album. Incredibly rare original 1987 U.S. first pressing of The Black Album (Warner Bros. 1-25677) factory sealed in its original shrinkwrap, complete with affixed peach-and-black sticker on the front, “Explicit Lyrics, Parental Advisory, (1-25677),” and barcode/copyright information sticker on the back. This is the last of five sealed copies of The Black Album recently discovered in the collection of a former Warner Bros. Records executive. Prior to that discovery, only three copies of the original 1987 U.S. pressing had surfaced. The discovery of these albums became an international news story, covered by Rolling Stone, Spin, Vibe, and news outlets around the world. In mint condition.
Includes a detailed letter of authenticity from Jeff Gold, the owner of Recordmecca and a former executive vice president/general manager of Warner Bros. Records, who worked closely with Prince during the 1990s. Starting Bid $2500
“‘Under the Cherry Moon,’ by Prince”— an eight-page rough draft for the opening scenes
673. Prince Autograph Manuscript Signed for ‘Under the Cherry Moon’. Fantastic 8 x 10.5 Mead college-ruled
notebook containing eight single-sided pages of Prince’s handwritten working script for the 1986 film Under the Cherry Moon, plus a handwritten and signed title page. The red notebook cover is marked in Prince’s hand in black ink, “Under the Cherry Moon,” and is followed by the title page, neatly written and signed by Prince in pencil: “’Under the Cherry Moon,’ by Prince.” Unlike an Under the Cherry Moon notebook we previously sold, this example is very much a rough draft—it offers brainstormed dialogue and direction, and is not organized in the more formal screenplay format (for example, multiple characters’ lines of dialogue run together without denoting who says what). A significant draft lending tremendous insight into Prince’s creative process. In fine condition, with creasing to cover and bits of staining to the first three pages. From the collection of an early Prince insider.

Played on stage by Prince—drumhead from Sheila E.’s iconic Sign o’ the Times/Lovesexy drum kit
676. Prince/Sheila E. Stage-Used Drum Head Signed
by Sheila E. SStage-used drumhead from Sheila E.’s custom turquoise Yamaha drum kit, which she played on the Sign o’ the Times album, tour, and movie, and the Lovesexy album, tour, and music videos in the late 1980s; there is also extensive footage of Prince playing Sheila E.’s drum kit live on tour and at after shows. The kit was auctioned off by Sheila E. in 2005, and it was purchased by the Australian retail chain Allans Music; she inscribed the 14˝ Remo Weatherking Ambassador snare drum head in black felt tip in her trademark mirror-image style, “To Allans, thanx, God Bless, Sheila E., 1 Peter 4:16.” At that time, she indicated that the kit had been completely untouched since the last show of the Lovesexy tour on February 13, 1989, in Osaka, Japan. The drum kit was displayed in one of the Allans stores for five years before the business collapsed, and one of the employees was able to purchase the kit from the liquidators; he later sold the kit to Paisley Park, but negotiated to keep the signed drum head. In fine condition, with expected signs of use and wear. Accompanied by copies of messages from the Allans employee who acquired the drum kit describing its history, as well as a photocopy of the original certificate from Sheila E. for the complete kit. Boasting excellent provenance and used on two of Prince’s biggest world tours, this is a unique Prince-played piece.

Lightner on the cover of the Madhouse album 16, featuring a yellow dress with tiny black polka dots and two bright red gloves. The dress has a halter-top style neck, form-fitting chest, and double ruffle at the bottom. The long red gloves have three red pearlescent buttons at each wrist. In fine condition. Accompanied by a letter of provenance signed by Maneca Lightner, “Maneca aka Sam,” in part: “I’ve now had this dress for almost 30 yrs and I know I will never wear it again…Prince came up with the idea of a Jazz Album and asked me to do the cover…I had no idea that we would end up doing 3 albums…This particular dress I wore for Madhouse 16. Prince had a stylist go out and shop for several dresses but none worked. The wardrobe person/designer on set put together a couple of options and he didn’t like any of those either. So Prince explained the exact look he wanted which was the 40s/50s pin-up style. Of course, it had to have polka dots because when we met, I was wearing a 40s style black & white polka dot dress and he loved that look. The designer sketched up this description, he approved and this amazing dress was created!…Back in the 80s, Prince was famous for giving the women he worked with ‘nick names.’ He told me I looked like my name should be Samantha and from that day on—he and everyone in his camp called me Sam! I’ve signed lots of autographs over the years as Maneca aka Sam.” Lightner posed for the covers of all three of Madhouse’s studio albums, wearing different polka-dot dresses on each one—on Madhouse 16, she also wore a red beret, and was equipped with a tommy gun for a gangster-themed image. Remarkable handmade Lords jacket from Prince’s wardrobe, worn in a photo shoot with Randee St. Nicholas
686. Prince’s Personally-Worn Photo Shoot
Jacket. Prince’s personally-owned handmade couture jacket worn in a photo shoot, crafted from cream-colored fabric with three pairs of ornate black corded rope clasps on the front, and matching rope links on the cuffs. Concealed in the placket are three white buttons, behind each set of clasps. The jacket has two jetted diagonal pockets, handkerchief pocket on left breast, and is lined in a fine paisley satin. The label sewn into the neck area reads: “Lords, Hand Made USA, Exclusively.” The inner pocket has a tag annotated: “Lords, Name: Prince, Date: 5/18/05.” In fine condition.
When Prince posed in this jacket in a shoot with photographer/filmmaker Randee St. Nicholas, he wore a high-collared black shirt and adorned the breast pocket with a black handkerchief—making for an edgy yet sophisticated look. Any piece from Prince’s personal wardrobe is tremendously desirable, and that he chose to wear this jacket in a photo shoot makes it especially significant.
From the collection of singer-songwriter Susannah Melvoin, an extended member of the Revolution during the Parade era, who shared a longterm working musical relationship with and was engaged to Prince during the 80s. Her twin sister, Wendy, was a member of Prince’s band, The Revolution. Accompanied by a letter of provenance from Susannah Melvoin, describing how she acquired the jacket: “My sister wore this jacket many times which is how I ended up with it. Long story. Prince wanted her to wear it for a show at Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel in Los Angles in July 2007. He had two shows a night: one in the big entryway of the hotel and the other in a small club room. So Prince had Wendy wear it for those. Then a week later on July 7th, Prince played three shows in Minneapolis in one day—at Macy’s, the Target Center, and First Ave—and Wendy performed with him there as well. We had flown to Minnesota, where Wendy wore the jacket again. After the show we were all together and went to give the jacket back. Prince said it looks clean on Wendy, and that she should have more made in lots of colors. I’ve had the jacket since.”

Prince’s iconic screen-worn ruffled shirt from Purple Rain—with provenance from Sheila E.’s mother!
687. Prince’s Screen-Worn ‘Purple Rain’ Ruffled White Shirt. Prince’s personally-owned custom-made white ruffled
shirt worn in the iconic 1984 film Purple Rain, lavishly crafted from soft silk and featuring a gathered high-neck collar, three layers of ruffles down the front, gathered ‘puffy’ long sleeves, ruffled faux French cuffs, faux pearl buttons down the front placket, and light shoulder pads. Sewn inside the neck is a purple-on-white “Prince” label. In fine condition, with expected wear from use, including dimpling to fabric on the left wrist and the cuff buttons removed.
Playing ‘The Kid’ in Purple Rain, Prince is seen wearing a white ruffled shirt at several key points in the movie—including his rendition of ‘Beautiful Ones,’ and then later in the finale when he sings ‘Purple Rain,’ ‘I Would Die 4 U,’ and ‘Baby I’m a Star.’ As it was his main wardrobe, Prince would have had more than one of these shirts during production.
Accompanied by a letter of provenance from Juanita Escovedo, the mother of Prince protege Sheila E., in full: “This letter is to acknowledge that the White Silk ‘Pirate’ like ruffled long sleeve shirt, with pearled buttons, that accompanies this letter, was made for the entertainer known as ‘Prince’ (with a label of his name sewn into the collar) during the time of the making of the music video ‘Purple Rain’; and was given by Prince to my daughter, Sheila E, his long time friend; who in turn gave the shirt to me. I then gave the shirt to Rev. J. Robert Prete for a fund raising effort.”
Purple Rain grossed over $72 million worldwide (against its $7.2 million budget), won the Oscar for Best Original Score, and served as the launching pad for Prince’s superstardom. As an iconic, screen-worn shirt from the classic movie, this is a remarkable museum-quality piece. Tour’ Outfit. In fine condition. Accompanied by a certificate of authenticity signed by Prince’s former wife, Mayte Garcia, who states that this “gold stage outfit was worn by Prince for the Jam of the Year World Tour.”
Due to his ever deepening dispute with Warner Brothers Records, Prince vowed that he would no longer record in studio but instead would only tour until the expiration of his contract on December 31, 1999. As a result, the ensuing 132-show ‘Jam of the Year Tour’ became an amalgamation of several tours (Love 4 One Another and New Power Soul Tour/Festival), all of which promoted Emancipation, his first album with EMI, and were performed by Prince under the name: ‘The Artist Formerly Known As Prince.’ This stunning ensemble in effect was worn by Prince at both his most liberated and vindictive, gloriously doffing the shackles of the Warner Bros. regime to perform freely and without restraint. A significant Prince offering in terms of both its timeframe and aesthetic beauty.
