Pre-War Baseball Cards
9012. 1904-11 W600 Sporting Life Cabinet Honus Wagner - SGC 1 (Type 4). In terms of population, the W600
Sporting Life Cabinet of Honus Wagner in uniform is by far rarer and appears in far fewer auctions or collections than the ‘Holy Grail’ of baseball cards, the T206 Wagner, and it boasts the same iconic portrait.
Famed photographer Carl Horner originally shot the most recognized image on a baseball card sometime after 1900, and based upon Wagner’s appearance in age, we surmise the image is closer to 1909. The W600 portrait in uniform is the exact same photograph used by Sweet Caporal for the famed T206 card. Sporting Life offered its cabinets for sale as premiums by mail-in offer, while T206s were inserted for free in packs of cigarettes. We also speculate the Sporting Life Cabinet was probably offered before the T206 card but due to cost (10 cents was a lot to pay for a baseball card over a hundred years ago), distribution was very limited as few were seen today. These cabinet cards are substantial premiums, 5.25 x 7 inches, printed on thick stock with subtle embossing on the borders. Absolutely beautiful miniature artworks, which due to their size, didn’t hold up well to decades of storage and moving.
Sporting Life offered many of the players in two poses, street clothes or uniform, and among collectors the uniform cards command a premium. But the jumbo twin of the T206 “Holy Grail” Wagner is arguably the most desirable of all the W600 Sporting Life Cabinets. The offered card is on a Type 4 mount and is one of two Wagner’s graded by SGC. While there is significant wear to the mount garnering the appropriate SGC 1 grade, the famed portrait image is dominant, and obviously the essence of any baseball card, but never more so than with this iconic piece. Starting Bid $2500
9013. 1909-11 T206 Lot of (10) with Hal Chase and (4) PSA Graded. Group of ten T206 white border baseball cards,
including four graded by PSA GOOD 2 or GOOD+ 2.5. 9019. 1909-11 T206 Piedmont 150 Nap Lajoie
(Portrait). An outstanding T206 Piedmont 150 portrait of Napoleon Lajoie, one of the key Hall of Famers in the popular white border set. This is a crisp, clean, and well-centered example with just a slight miscut as issued from the factory; the background is bright yellow-gold and the card possesses superior registration. The card is without creases and the corners display all the attributes of an EX example. The card was submitted to PSA, who declined to grade it given the slight miscut. Starting Bid $200
(Throwing) PSA GOOD+ 2.5. Graded by PSA GOOD+ 2.5. American League batting star and Hall of Famer Nap Lajoie is shown in a great ‘throwing’ pose on this desirable card from the esteemed T206 set. The card exhibits some slight soiling and rounded corners. Starting Bid $200
PR 1. Graded by PSA PR 1. Another key Hall of Fame portrait in the T206 set, this card shows Willie Keeler in his New York uniform. Standing at 5´ 4˝ and weighing just 140 pounds, ‘Wee Willie’ was yet a towering figure in the batter’s box: regarded as one of the greatest contact hitters of all time, he was nearly impossible to strike out and finished his career with a .341 batting average. Rounded corners, light staining, and a few creases mar this well-centered, well-loved card of the two-time NL batting champ. Starting Bid $100
9022. 1909-11 T206 Sweet Caporal 150/30 Ed Walsh and Rube Waddell - Both PSA GOOD 2.
Both graded by PSA GOOD 2. Two classic cards of the Hall of Fame pitchers, both with Sweet Caporal 150/30 backs. Waddell is the “throwing” action shot variant, and especially nice for the grade: it is well-centered with clean white borders and sharp corners, and has a very light diagonal crease across the center. Walsh is similarly well-centered, with rounded corners and a crease toward the bottom. Starting Bid $200
9023. 1909-11 T206 Sweet Caporal 150/30 Walter Johnson (Portrait) PSA VG 3. Graded by PSA VG 3.
Probably the most popular card of the ‘Big Train,’ this is one of the key Hall of Fame portraits in the T206 set. Shown early in his career with the Washington Senators’ “W” emblazoned on his uniform, Walter Johnson’s steely visage stands out against the bright yellow background. Well-centered both front and back, this is a classic card with fantastic eye-appeal for the grade. Starting Bid $200
9024. 1909-11 T206 Sweet Caporal 350/30 Mickey
6. Mickey Doolin is featured on three different cards in the T206 set, and only one (the portrait) spelled his name correctly—in the action shots, he is known as “Doolan.” Highlighted by a great fielding pose of Philadelphia’s steady-handed shortstop, this card is a solid EX-MT example in all respects. Starting Bid $100
9025. 1909-11 T206 Sweet Caporal 150/30 Mordecai Brown and George Davis - Both PSA VG 3. Both
graded by PSA VG 3. Two eye-catching cards of the cross-town Chicago rivals and Hall of Famers, both with Sweet Caporal 150/30 backs. The card of hurler Mordecai Brown is the more desirable “Cubs Shirt” variation, and has his three-fingered throwing hand on full display. The card of switch-hitting third baseman/outfielder George Davis is an attractive example from the visually appealing ‘sunset’ subset. Both have slightly rounded corners, and Davis has light tobacco staining along the left edge. Starting Bid $200
9026. 1909-11 T206 Sweet Caporal Patsy Dougherty
and Ginger Beaumont - Both PSA EX 5. Both graded
by PSA EX 5. Two superior mid-grade examples, both with strong colors, clean white borders, and sharp corners. The Patsy Dougherty portrait (with a Sweet Caporal 150/30 back) is an especially fine specimen, with perfect printing registration and excellent centering. Ginger Beaumont has a Sweet Caporal 350/30 back, and is slightly off-center with crisp edges. Starting Bid $200
9027. 1909–1911 T206 HOF Lot of (5) - All VG. Lot of five T206 baseball cards from 1909–1911, all grading as VG. The lot contains the following Hall of Fame players: Chief Bender (trees), Roger Bresnahan (portrait), Eddie Cicotte, John McGraw (no cap), and Vic Willis (portrait). Starting Bid $200

1911 T201 Mecca Double Folders, an innovative set featuring two early ballplayers per card: when folded, the player depicted on the back assumes the legs of the other player (typically a teammate) on the front. This is a desirable, complete offering of a classic early tobacco set, grading overall 35% VG-EX (one higher), 35% VG, 20% G and 10% F–P. Five cards have been graded by PSA: PSA EX-MT 6: Nap Lajoie/Fred Falkenberg PSA VG-EX 4: Terry Turner/George Stovall PSA VG 3: Tris Speaker/Earl Gardner PSA GOOD+ 2.5: Walter Johnson/Gabby Street PSA FR 1.5: Christy Matthewson [Mathewson]/Albert Bridwell
