MATHEMATICAL TRAIL

INTRODUCTION Tarsus is a very important tourist, agricultural and industrial destination. Many people travel and work from all over Turkey, world and from Europe to enjoy the beaches, climate, tourist attractions. However, now we propose a different visit, a walk in Tarsus focusing on the mathematical aspects that we find along the way. Believe it or not, mathematics are around us. We have drawn from the literature nine key themes that we feel would be integral to any high-quality learning environment, and these are summarized by their keywords as follows: •motivation •concentration •independence • confidence • well-being •social interaction •respect • multiple skill acquisition • higher-order thinking skills

There are a variety of reasons why a school system needs one or more alternative schools or Alternative Learning Environments (ALE). Most center around the need to remove a disruptive student from the regular classroom or the need for a more structured environment to meet a student’s educational needs. A mathematics trail is a walk to discover mathematics. A math trail can be almost anywhere—a neighborhood, a business district or shopping mall, a park, a zoo, a library, even a government building. The math trail map or guide points to places where walkers formulate, discuss, and solve interesting mathematical problems. Anyone can walk a math trail alone, with the family, or with another group.
