2010 Spring Programs The City of Casa Grande Community Services Department Mission Statement “The mission of the City of Casa Grande Community Services Department is to provide services for well-rounded quality educational and recreational opportunities that reflect the interest of our diverse community. We strive to improve the quality of life through parks, open space and trails, equal access to a diversity of materials through library services and a variety of recreational programs and activities for the community.” The City of Casa Grande Community Services Department is happy to present the 2010 Spring Activities Brochure. As in the past, the department has put a great deal of time and effort into the development of these programs, and we sincerely hope there is something of interest for everyone. If there is a program you’d like us to offer or if you have a subject you’d like to instruct, please don’t hesitate to contact us. The goal of the Casa Grande Community Services Department is to provide well-rounded leisure experiences for all. We strive to make our programs, parks, activities and facilities accessible to all. PARK RESERVATIONS

Local groups may reserve a city park by notifying the Parks & Recreation Department no less than seven days prior to date of use, although the more notice we can be given, the better your chances are of securing a park. There are restroom requirements for larger groups of people. Depending on the activity, groups may need to go through the Special Event Permit Application process. For further information, contact the Parks & Recreation Department.

Online Registration FAQs What is online registration? Online registration allows customers to register via the Internet for most of our classes and programs the system is available to residents 24 hours a day, seven days a week, except during times the system will be down for maintenance. How do I use online registration? Individuals wishing to use our online registration technology must have an approved online account, which includes a login name and password. You must also have an account in good standing with the Community Services Department. If you have an account established, please follow the registration steps. How do I request an online account? Please go to www.casagrandeaz.gov/communityservices and click on the Parks & Recreation icon. This will take you to the online registration page. Click on “My Account” at the top of the screen. This will bring you to the “customer login” screen. Click on “click here to set up a new account for online registration.” All fields must be completely filled out in order for us to approve your account. Submit your application. The Community Services Department will approve or deny accounts Monday through Friday, between the hours of 8:00 am and 5:00 pm. Once your account is approved you will receive an e-mail informing you of your customer I.D. number and password. If your account is denied you will also receive an e-mail explaining the reason for the denial. If your account is approved, you are ready to log on and register. What Web site address do I access to register online? www.casagrandeaz.gov What if I forgot my login name or password? Call 520-421-8677 between the hours of 8:00 am and 5:00 pm or e-mail us at parksrecreg@casagrandeaz.gov and we will be happy to assist you. Please plan ahead and call before registration starts so that we may assist you promptly. If you wait until registration opens on Tuesday, August 18, we may not be able to assist you before the start of registration. What if I do not have an e-mail address or home computer? You may visit any of the two Casa Grande public libraries to set up

your free personal e-mail account. A reference librarian can assist you. For more information on how to establish a free e-mail address, call 520-421-8677 or 520-421-8710. Do I need a credit card to use online registration? Yes. In order to complete your online transaction(s) and confirm your enrollment you must pay by credit card. The City of Casa Grande currently accepts VISA, MasterCard, and American Express. Why doesn’t my registration work online? There could be a number of reasons: • The class is not open for registration at the time you are trying to register. • Some classes require special registration data and therefore are not available for online registration. Classes that are not available for online registration will have a symbol of a crossed-out computer by the class description. • You have not properly logged into your account. • The system is temporarily unavailable due to a large number of users at the same time or system maintenance. The City of Casa Grande addresses maintenance issues from 5:30-8:30 pm. • You or your child does not meet the minimum age requirement for the class. He/she is either too young or too old for the class. Do I need to sign a liability waiver? Yes. You will be asked to review the waiver and agree or disagree before you complete your transaction. What should I do if my e-mail address has changed? Please notify us if you have changed your e-mail address. Call 520421-8677, or send an e-mail to parksrecreg@casagrandeaz.gov with your new address. What if I am trying to register and its says, “Payee is not the correct age”? There may be a couple of reasons for this: • Your birth date is incomplete or you have left it blank and it needs to be added/corrected. • You are outside the age specified in the class description. Remember online registration is age specific.

Registration, including online registration begins at 8:00 am on Tuesday, December 22, 2009. Online registrations are processed in real time, as you use the system. After you sign up, you will receive a printed confirmation of your class/activity. Online you will receive a screen receipt that can be printed, if you did not receive a confirmation prior to your class/activity, call 520-421-8677. Your confirmation will serve as notice for you to attend on the specific start date. You will not be able to attend if your name is not on the class/activity roster. All classes and activities are subject to change depending upon instructor availability and minimum/maximum enrollment and are subject to cancellation due to insufficient enrollment. NOTE: WHEN A CLASS SESSION OCCURS OVER A HOLIDAY, THERE WILL BE NO CLASS ON THAT PARTICULAR DAY AND NO REFUNDS OR CREDITS WILL BE ISSUED (i.e., MARTIN LUTHER KING, PRESIDENTS, MEMORIAL DAY, etc.) In the event of a cancellation you will be notified by phone and may request a transfer or refund. REFUND POLICY There will be a $3 service charge per person, per class on all refunds. IF A PERSON CANCELS AFTER THE CLASS BEGINS, NO REFUND OR CREDIT WILL BE ISSUED. A full refund will be granted if the City of Casa Grande Parks & Recreation Department cancels a class. The Parks & Recreation Department reserves the right to cancel, postpone and combine classes, change rooms or change instructors as needed. Please allow four (4) weeks for a refund check to be mailed. Early registration is encouraged to help prevent course cancellation due to an apparent lack of interest. All information is subject to change without notice. Some fees do not include materials or supplies costs. Estimated cost of the materials or supplies will vary with quality and quantity used. HOW TO INTERPRET OUR CLASS DESCRIPTIONS title of activity BELLY DANCING FOR FUN & FITNESS Learn the ancient art form commonly known as Belly Dancing. With emphasis on posture, the basics of one slow and one fast movement will be taught each week. Elements of costuming, history and culture, and choreography will also be included. Adult Special Interest Classes Special Interest Classes are offered throughout the year to provide an opportunity to experience new activities or further expand current knowledge and abilities. For additional Adult Programs, see the Library section of this brochure or contact them at 421-8710. For further information on Adult Special Interest Classes, contact Nick Russo at 421-8677, ext. 4540. Registration Policy Pre-registration is important. Payment must be made at the time of registration. Classes that do not meet the minimum registration requirement two business days prior to the start of the class will be cancelled. Registration may be made online, in person, faxed or mailed to the City of Casa Grande Community Services Department, 404 E. Florence Blvd., Casa Grande, AZ 85122. BODYWORKS BodyWorks is a 10 week healthy eating and activity program developed by the Office of Women’s Health to help parents and caregivers of adolescent girls to improve family eating and exercise habits. Children’s Special Interest Classes We love our parents, but ... if the class does not state Parent/Tot, parents are asked to remain outside the classroom or pool area. Our instructors have found that parent and/or sibling distractions, interruptions and various other concerns, which interfere with class instruction, have often affected the quality of instruction. We also feel it is most beneficial for children to have recreational time interacting with their peers. One to two "room parents" may stay to assist with bathroom breaks, keeping kids in line and helping with any one-on-one children but they may not help with the instruction, i.e. tumbling, dance, arts and crafts, etc. For more information concerning these programs contact the Parks & Recreation Office at 421-8677. Registration Policy: Pre-registration is very important. Payment must be made at the time of registration. Pre-registration dates for Special Interest Classes begin Tuesday, December 22 to the start of class. Each class requires a minimum number of participants in order for the class to be offered. The City of Casa Grande Parks & Recreation Department sponsors an After School Program for grades K-6. Evergreen Elementary School will be our program site. The program will run from school dismissal until 6:00 pm. Activities for this program include sports, games, homework time, arts and crafts and much more. Transportation to the program is provided by the school district. Each parent must make bussing arrangements with the school. Transportation from the program is not provided. Space is limited to 100 children and registration will be taken on a first come, first served basis. This will be a month of African American activities: coloring contest, arts and crafts, trivia, and much more. AFRICAN AMERICAN CULTURE Friday, February 5 We will be watching a film about the African American Culture in order to learn and understand more about African American Heritage.

SUNDAY CELEBRATION Sunday, February 7 The 19th Annual Len Colla Recreation Center Sunday Celebration will be held from 11:00 am-1:00 pm. This is a celebration to honor the late Len Colla who the center is named after. Len Colla was a teacher at Palo Verde school who used to donate his time at the center to tutor kids after school. Activities will include games, music, food and an open house with details regarding the construction project, current timelines, etc. Families are encouraged to attend!

Let’s get physical! Every week this month we will be learning, celebrating and participating in our favorite sports. (Sports activities will take place at Mosley Park.) KICKBALL March 3 Join us as the staff challenge the youth in this fun backyard game.

BASKETBALL March 17 On Thursday we will go over the rules and history of basketball and on Friday we will have a mini-basketball tournament. We will also be coloring our own personal basketballs to hang up in the center.

FOOTBALL March 10 Do you know how to throw a football? If so, come show us! After we go over the history of football and some of its stars we will play a game of 500!

SOCCER March 24 No hands! Let’s have fun passing and shooting for the goal. Do you know what country soccer originated in? Well, if you don’t, you will if you come to the center for soccer day. Plus we will have a goal-shooting contest where everyone is a winner!

THE DEEP SEA MONTH

Ever wondered what lives in the deep dark ocean? This month we will be learning about and creating deep-sea creatures. We will also be watching videos on Fridays that are ocean themed. If you cannot have your child in your lap, arrange to sit on the floor right next to him or her. Help your child to stay focused on the storyteller and participate in the songs and activities. 2. Please plan to arrive at Storytime a few minutes early. One and two year olds are easily distracted, and latecomers become the focus of attention. If you are more than 10 minutes late, you may not be allowed to enter the room due to distractions and/or overcrowding. 3. Adult Sport Leagues and Special Events CACTUS PEDAL The 5th Annual Cactus Pedal Bike Challenge through the Sacaton Mountains is set for Saturday, March 13 beginning and ending at the Paul Mason Sportsplex (2525 N. Summer Club for Kids SUPER, SILLY, SUMMER CLUB for KIDS! Each Tuesday will include a field trip and each Thursday is a swimming day at the Palm Island Family Aquatics Park. A $40 registration fee is required per child ($80 maximum per family), $35 ($70 maximum per family) for those currently registered in the Evergreen After School Program. ADULT CENTER CLASSES, CLUBS AND MORE CERAMICS Dorothy Powell Senior Adult Center offers an ongoing open ceramics program in the Peart Center Activity Room. Our center has a variety of molds to pour at a reasonable cost. The public, if experienced in pouring procedures, is invited to use the facilities during open ceramic hours: Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, 8:00 am to 2:00 pm. All ceramic hobbyists are welcomed. Assistance will be available if you have questions. Prices for this activity are based on the size of mold used and how many firings are needed. Please see the instructor for questions on costs. LAPIDARY AND SILVERSMITHING Persons interested in Lapidary and Silversmithing will enjoy our open hours this spring. The public is welcome to come and use the facility. The facility is open Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 8:00 am to 12 noon for Lapidary and on Monday from 12:30-3:00 pm for Silversmithing. Check the Cactus Chronicle for times. The Lapidary/ Silversmithing Supervisor is on hand to answer your questions and help out with the equipment. Dorothy Powell Senior Adult Center 55 ALIVE The City of Casa Grande Parks & Recreation Department and AARP are co-sponsoring the "55 Alive" Program. This innovative classroom driver-retraining program is designed to help older persons improve their driving skills through a four-hour refresher course. This is the nation’s first curriculum specifically designed for drivers ages 50 and over. Pre-registration is required, you must call Mike Bergman at 4941185 to register. CARD PARTY Come on down to the center on Monday and Friday afternoons at 1:00 pm for a game of cards. Games will vary from day to day including: Hand & Foot, Mexican Train Dominoes and more. Youth Sports HERSHEY TRACK AND FIELD This nationally sponsored youth track program is scheduled for Saturday, March 27, beginning at 9:00 am at the Carr McNatt Football Stadium (Old Cougar Stadium). PITCH, HIT, AND RUN COMPETITION The City of Casa Grande Parks & Recreation Department will host its Annual Major League Baseball Youth Pitch, Hit and Run Skills Competition at the Little League fields. CATFISH RODEO The 29th Annual Catfish Rodeo, co-sponsored by the Optimist Club of Casa Grande, is scheduled for Saturday, March 20 at Dave White Regional Park. Special Events CITY CELEBRATION – BOOGIE FOR YOUR BONES DANCE CONTEST Casa Grande—Does your family want to get healthy?—and have fun while doing it? Then join us at the Annual City Celebration, Friday, May 21 at Peart Park for the Boogie for Your Bones Dance Competition. The fun starts at 5:00 pm with the concert starting at 6:00 pm. There will be fun for the whole family. Vendor booths include: the City Departments and local area agencies, food, a Kids Fun Zone with games and crafts, face painting, a dance contest and music will be provided by Mary Hoffman (Country). This year the Parks & Recreation Department in their “Steps to a Healthier Casa Grande” has focused on “Play” and “Building Better Bones.” The City of Casa Grande Community Services Department has been delighted to assist the Pinal Coalition in providing BodyWorks, a program designed to improve bone health, as well as overall family nutrition and physical activity. Led by the HHS’ Office on Women’s Health’s (OWH), The Arizona Osteoporosis Coalition and University of Arizona Cooperative Extension in Pinal County, this program is part of the national Best Bones Forever! campaign aimed at increasing awareness of the key bone-building years and encouraging bone-healthy habits among girls ages 9-14. Girls between the ages of 9 and 14 are at a critical stage for building life-long healthy habits. According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services

(HHS), girls develop close to 90 percent of their bone mass by the time they turn 18. However, many adolescent girls do not get the recommended daily amounts of physical activity, calcium and vitamin D that are essential for good health and strong bones. Many tend to skip breakfast, have non-nutritious lunches and do not eat dinner with their families. The BodyWorks classes are free and will start in February. To bring attention to this topic, the Community Service Department would like to host a Boogie For Your Bones Dance Contest. This is a new dance workout, Boogie for Your Bones, designed to help people maintain healthier bones. It has been launched by the National Osteoporosis Foundation. Individuals and groups are encouraged to develop a dance to show how they maintain healthier bones. You can catch this latest dance craze on You Tube. Groups can pick up an informational packet at the Parks & Recreation Office by calling 4218677, ext. 4500. Winter Celebration Events for Senior Adults Winter Celebration Events are held January through March for all seniors in the Casa Grande area. HISTORICAL DOWNTOWN DISTRICT & “ART IN THE ALLEY” This is a great “downtown social” with artists, musicians, poets, food and a Car Show. 8th ANNUAL “LIL” SWEETHEARTS FASHION SHOW Join us on Tuesday, February 9 for the “Lil” Sweethearts of Casa Grande Fashion Show. CASA GRANDE ART EXPLOSION The 3rd Annual Fine Arts event will be held downtown at Peart Park, Saturday, March 13 and Sunday, March 14. The hours will be Saturday from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm and Sunday from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm. SENIOR PROM All senior adults and winter visitors are invited to attend the Senior Prom on Friday, March 26. The night will include dinner, music and dancing. You may also nominate your favorite couple or yourselves to be chosen as the Cactus King and Queen of the Senior Prom. Registrations will take place at the event. One lucky couple will be chosen from entries to reign over the prom and will receive the Grand Prize Package. Three other couples will also be drawn from the entries to receive prize packages. Entries will be drawn at random and winners must be present at the time of the drawing to claim their prize package. Entertainment will be provided. Tickets will go on sale beginning March 1. The price will be $12 per person in advance. This event is sponsored by the City of Casa Grande Community Services Department and the Dorothy Powell Senior Adult Center.

These groups are invited to come out and help clean up their adopted area on Saturday, April 17 from 8:00 to 11:00 am. LITTER PREVENTION POSTER CONTEST The Casa Grande Clean & Beautiful Board is asking 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students to help spread the word about litter prevention. Prizes are provided for the first, second, and third place contestants in each grade. Posters will be distributed throughout all Casa Grande Elementary Schools. Satin Slippers – Ballroom Dance Club Those 21 and over are welcome to join. If you are an experienced ballroom dancer you’ll have the opportunity to support and promote our club. Boogie For Your Bones Dance Contest The City of Casa Grande Parks and Recreation Department, AZOC and the University of Arizona, Pinal County Extension Office would like to invite you to

“Boogie Your Way to the Top” at the Annual City Celebration This is a new dance workout, Boogie for Your Bones, designed to help people maintain healthier bones. It has been launched by the National Osteoporosis Foundation. Individuals and groups are encouraged to develop a dance to show how they maintain healthier bones. You can catch this latest dance craze on You Tube, search Boogie For Your Bones.
