Working Groups
What a year! 16 Working Groups worth of action! Welcome to the year end reports from OPIRG McMaster’s volunteer working groups. Each year we accept applications for working groups and every year we are pleasantly surprised by the range of interesting and important issues that come to us. Our board of directors approve or deny application based on our working group policy, and each year we are happy to see returning
groups re-apply and expand on their work, some groups having 10 years invested in their project. The results of all this activity is captured in a snapshot in the following pages, I hope you take the time to explore the depth of commitment exhibited here. As a coordinator of volunteers it is a distinct privilege to work with and learn from such an engaged and diverse group of people. Their work forms the core of what OPIRG McMaster stands for: engaged citizens learning from each other and making a difference on environmental and social justice issues, each and every day. Building Community
OPIRG Working Groups identify a need and then work collectively to address it. The model is based on “from the ground up organizing, with many groups starting something where there was nothing before, filling a gap, addressing a community concern, all using nonoppressive and consensus based decision making. Everyone gets a part to be an active agent in their own community, utilizing and developing their unique skill set, and learning and taking chances together in a supportive environment.
