In this play of brutality and darkness lit by shafts of absurdist humour, the King becomes a fool; the destitute beggar becomes a noble philosopher; reason turns to passion, passion to madness.
Watch King Lear, Shakespeare’s raw, unparalleled tragedy, played by an all-female cast.
‘Who is it that can tell me who I am? …. Oh let me not be mad!’

Together by Lukas Moodysson Thu 4 Jun / 8pm Fri 5 & Sat 6 Jun / 2.45pm & 8pm
Stockholm, 1975. After a domestic crisis, Elizabeth and her two children move into the Together collective where her brother Goran lives. The collective has a laid-back attitude towards sex, drugs and nudity, and an open mind about politics. But Goran is having a crisis of his own. He is trying to balance the philosophy of free love with his more conventional desires. Taking place between the death of Franco and the snowfall of a Christmas morning, this joyful, painful comedy about childhood, family and the
balance between ideology and real life is directed by internationally acclaimed Vanishing Point’s Artistic Director, Matthew Lenton. Matthew will work with the final year students to create an exciting new stage adaptation of this Lukas Moodysson film.

‘You know what I believe in John? The grey area. The bit between. To any difficult problem, there is never a right solution, there is only ever the best solution. Nothing on Earth is completely pure. Prosseda and the Pedal Piano Fri 6 Mar Opening Concert of the RCS Piano Festival
Previous attendees of the RCS Piano Festival will know that we have a fondness for filling the stage with pianos and lots of them. Today’s concert will have just two pianos on stage, but only one player! In the late 1800’s there was a fashion for the Pedal Piano – two grand pianos stacked on top of each other, with the bottom instrument played using pedals much like an organ. The pianopédalier was an invitation to the great virtuoso composers of the Romantic period.
Roberto Prosseda is the leading exponent of this instrument in our time, and his programme features some of those great composers, including Schumann, Gounod and Charles Alkan. Schumann Etudes in Canon Form for pedal piano Schumann Sketches for pedal piano Boëly Fantaisie et Fugue Gounod Marche Funèbre pour une Marionnette Alkan Benedictus Alkan 3 Grands Préludes Roberto Prosseda Piano-pédalier Part of the RCS Piano Festival. Trumpet Traditions
Plugged-in Ilya
Mallet Madness
Fri 1 May
Fri 8 May
Fri 15 May
Inspired by RCS’s proud tradition of trumpet playing, when the opportunity arose to acquire the incredible resources of the Tarr Collection, we couldn’t resist. American Edward Tarr is a pioneer in the revival of Baroque trumpet performance practice, having produced over one hundred editions of music, and singlehandedly bringing many composers into the repertoire.
Renowned virtuoso and RCS International Fellow Ilya Gringolts is passionate about exploring new music for his instrument. He will perform as a soloist and in ensembles, giving first performances of works, including this year’s winners of the Walter and Dinah Wolfe Prize.
Within a generation, the marimba has emerged as the concert instrument of choice for percussionists, and no two artists have done more to further that cause than the gentleman featured in this concert. International Fellow Eric Sammut may already be familiar to our audiences, and it is a delight to welcome him back alongside the visionary Leigh Howard Stevens to join him for this very special concert. Stevens helped to revolutionise every aspect of the marimba, from composing and arranging new music, to building the instruments themselves with his firm Malletech.
We help the RCS Archives celebrate this acquisition and follow the formal handover presentation with performances of some of those works, including by Edward Tarr himself, along with his wife, concert organist Irmtraud Tarr, former RCS Principal John Wallace, and current students who can’t wait to get their hands on the music.

Birth and death have always been the most significant events in human experience, to which society has, throughout the ages, responded in different ways. The very young and the old have always had a close, touching affinity. Mussorgsky’s song cycle The Nursery is a uniquely engaging picture of what it might be like to grow up in 1870’s Russia, while his epic song cycle The Songs and Dances of Death is a characteristically direct and bleak picture of encounters with death. Two sides of the same coin. Prokofiev’s Peter and the Wolf, written in 1936, commissioned by Natalya Sat’s Children’s Theatre demonstrate Prokofiev’s natural gift for story-telling and characterisation. His Three Children’s Songs were written immediately afterwards. Chatterbox and The Sweet Song were eventually joined by Three Little Pigs to make the full set of three.

Professor Stephen Robertson
Roy Howat and Chabrier
Mon 23 Feb / 7.30pm

Hear Professor Stephen Robertson, Head of Vocal Studies, talk about his approach to vocal pedagogy. He is in much demand as a vocal teacher and has spoken across the world including the International Physiology and Acoustics of Singing Conference in Stockholm.
Chabrier’s influence can be heard echoed through the music of composers of Franck, Debussy, Ravel, Albéniz, Falla, Stravinsky and Poulenc. Poulenc. He who rated Chabrier’s Pièces pittoresques equal in importance with Debussy’s Preludes, recalled discovering this music in his teens: ‘A new world of sounds and harmonies opened up before me, and my own music has never forgotten the effect of that first lover’s kiss.’ This lecture explores that wonderful world of sounds and harmonies and introduces Roy’s concert performance of a selection of Chabrier’s works.

The Opera Project presents a unique Scottish premiere, fusing Baroque and 20th century repertoire. Although linked by virtue of their classical origins, the two pieces could not be more contrasting. Purcell’s Dido, an intensely expressive, condensed journey through the troubled tragedy of a doomed relationship, is paired with Poulenc’s Mammelles; a subversive and surreal comic theatrical romp, arranged especially for the 1958 Aldeburgh Festival for two pianos by Benjamin Britten. Sir John in Love by Vaughan Williams Sat 9 May / 7.15pm Mon 11 May / 7.15pm Wed 13 May / 7.15pm Fri 15 May / 7.15pm
Opera Performance Feb - Jun 15
Having performed Verdi’s Falstaff (2005) and Nicolai’s Lustigen Weiber (2013), the RCS Opera department completes its operatic/Shakespearean Merry Wives/Falstaff ‘ trilogy’ with Vaughan Williams’ colourful and lyrical Sir John in Love. Originally titled The Fat Knight, Sir John was first performed at the Royal College of Music in 1929 and received its first professional performance in 1946 at Sadlers Wells.
Don’t miss this irresistibly energetic opera with a genuine sense of theatrical comedy and endless ‘treasure chest’ of Vaughan Williams’ finest melodies, married with the English folk style.

Signed I wish my donation to remain anonymous Gift Aid is a UK government tax scheme. As an exempt charity, the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland can reclaim basic rate tax on qualifying donations from UK tax payers. This applies to your donation(s) until you notify us otherwise. To enable the Conservatoire to reclaim Gift Aid, please sign and date the Gift Aid declaration. I would like the Conservatoire to treat all qualifying donations as Gift Aid donations. I confirm I have paid or will pay an amount of Income Tax and/or Capital Gains Tax for each tax year (6 April to 5 April) that is at least equal to the amount of tax that all charities or Community Amateur Sports Clubs (CASCs) that I donate to will reclaim on my gifts for that tax year. I understand the Conservatoire will reclaim 28p of tax on every £1 that I gave up to 5 April 2008 and will reclaim 25p of tax on every £1 that I give on or after 6 April 2008.
Please tick one of the following

Please treat the enclosed gift and all gifts of money that I have made in the past 4 years and in the future as Gift Aid donations. I am not eligible for Gift Aid.

Three of Scotland’s top playwrights, Mike Cullen, Jules Horne and Alan McKendrick, have been commissioned to create new plays, working with the actors and directors of our renowned Masters in Classical and Contemporary Text programme. These writers follow in the footsteps of many distinguished playwrights previously commissioned, including Linda Maclean, Douglas Maxwell, David Harrower, Anne Marie di Mambro, Peter Arnott, Nicola McCartney, Davie Anderson and Rona Munro.
