Lone Pine Movie History Past and Present Lone Pine is known for many things, one of them being movies. The area has stood in for places as different as Africa for “Gunga Din” (1939) and Afghanistan for “Iron Man” (2008) even other planets. (The town has a museum and festival devoted to westerns and even the name of the route running through the nearby Alabama Hills is Movie Road.) And more specifically is the connection of Western movies, plenty of Western movies. The Lone Pine Film Festival, held in October, celebrates the history of film making in the area. The festival offers tours to movie locations, a chance to chat with actors and those behind the camera too like stuntmen and women or the sons and daughters of stars long passed. The festival has been going strong for more than 20 years and should not be missed. The festival goes well with the Beverly and Jim Rogers Museum of Lone Pine Film History. The museum is easy to find, look for the big White Horse out front. Inside is a wealth of props from movies filmed in the area, a gift shop and a screening room. Check out the museum’s website or Facebook page for the latest on what’s playing and what’s showing in the museum. Hundreds of classics starring the likes of Hopalong Cassidy, John Wayne and directors like John Ford have filmed in the area. But

there have been more than old-time Westerns filmed in the shadow of Mount Whitney and the Sierra Nevada. The cult classic “Tremors” (1990) was filmed in the area, standing in for the Arizona town of Perfection. The movie is about a giant sand worm attracted to movement that tries to eat everyone in the little town that is blocked off from the outside world by the mountains (the Sierra Nevada). This is Lone Pine’s six-degrees of Kevin Bacon connection. Most recently, blockbusters like “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen” (2009), “Iron Man” (2008) and “Django:Unchained” (2012) have been filmed in the area. Locals occasionally get a chance to be extras in movies, like a music video filmed in Independence where the whole town was occupied by aliens. Just outside Lone Pine on the Owens Lake bed, scenes for “Star Trek V: The Final Frontier” (1989) and other space age movies have been filmed.
