From Lera Auerbach’s First Symphony to Wagner’s The Ring, An Orchestral Adventure, Thomas Søndergård celebrates his seventh year as Music Director of the Royal Scottish National Orchestra in style. We return to our survey of Mahler’s gripping symphonies featuring No2 Resurrection and No9 and welcome a host of exciting guest artists. We’re delighted to welcome the Nordic Music Days Festival to Scotland this autumn, exploring some of the latest Nordic and Scottish contemporary music. Join us for our concert featuring compositions by Errollyn Wallen, Rune Glerup, Bent Sørensen and Aileen Sweeney alongside an iconic masterpiece in Sibelius’ Seventh Symphony (Fri 1 Nov).

We are thrilled to introduce Patrick Hahn as our new Principal Guest Conductor. Patrick first conducted the Orchestra back in November 2022, when he stepped in for indisposed Conductor Emeritus Alexander Lazarev. Establishing himself as one of the most versatile and successful conductors of his generation, Patrick joins us for Dvořák’s Symphony No9 From the New World (Fri 6 Dec) and Mozart’s Requiem (Fri 25 Apr).

Spotlight on new music

The RSNO has always been proud to support living composers and give voice to their music. Throughout our history we’ve premiered music by Richard Strauss, Shostakovich, Prokofiev and many more. This Concert Season, we have a brand-new staged opera from Jonathan Dove, Uprising, showcasing the voices of all our choruses (Fri 28 Mar). Plus, listen out for exciting sound worlds from Lera Auerbach, Elena Langer, Anna Clyne, Helen Grime, Lorne Balfe, and a special co-commission from Neil T Smith with our Partnership Ensemble, Dunedin Consort (Fri 16 May), to name but a few!

Singing sensations

There’s nothing quite like the combined power of the RSNO Chorus and Orchestra to make your spine tingle! We have some spectacular choral performances for you to enjoy, including Carmina Burana (Fri 15 Nov), Jonathan Dove’s Uprising (Fri 28 Mar) and Mozart’s Requiem (Fri 25 Apr). Plus, don’t miss the breathtaking voice of soprano Sunyoung Seo in our Valentine’s concert (Fri 14 Feb) following her glowing debut with Scottish Opera last season.

In March, save the date for the young musicians from St Mary’s Music School as they join the RSNO pre-concert for a special performance. At 6pm, start your evening early to support the talented young artists of the future perform on the main stage (Fri 21 Mar).

Don’t miss Randall’s performances of Barber’s Violin Concerto (Fri 6 Dec) and Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto (Fri 30 May) in his newly appointed position as Artist in Residence. Described as a ‘cool, calm and collected angel’ by the LA Times, be there to hear his heavenly tone yourself!

Passion, drink and roasted swans – choral music isn’t meant to be this much fun! But the medieval monks who wrote the words to Carmina Burana didn’t seem to have been that bothered. Expect great tunes, unstoppable rhythms and some thoroughly bad behaviour from Orff’s outrageous piece. Plus, we begin the evening with a playful cello concerto featuring the nonsense verse of Edward Lear, reimagined by Elena Langer and RSNO Principal Cellist Pei-Jee Ng.

If music is the food of love, then we have a feast for you this Valentine’s! They call Tchaikovsky’s Sixth Symphony the ‘Pathétique’, which means ‘full of emotion’. But then, everything about this concert is romantic, beginning with the soaring beauty and off-thescale passion of Richard Wagner, sung by Korean star soprano Sunyoung Seo.

When Gustav Mahler wrote his Ninth Symphony, he knew that he was living on borrowed time, and so he poured everything he had into one of the most poignant and powerful symphonies ever written. In what should be a highlight of our Concert Season, Music Director Thomas Søndergård leads us through a wonderland of hymn tunes, Viennese waltzes, half-remembered songs and distant trumpets – before the sun sets on Mahler’s very own, heartbreaking farewell. When it comes to piano playing, challenges don’t get much bigger than Rachmaninov’s Third Piano Concerto – the so-called ‘Everest of Piano Concertos’. There’s a special thrill in hearing a true champion tackle its grand, romantic heights, and as winner of the 2023 Scottish International Piano Competition, Jonathan Mamora is certainly that! With Lionel Bringuier conducting, this concert will be electric, from Louise Farrenc’s powerful overture to Bartók’s technicolour workout for the whole band: the explosive Concerto for Orchestra.

War creates lies, but it also exposes uncomfortable truths, and as the Soviet Union faced the onslaught of Nazi Germany in 1943, Shostakovich poured his feelings into a symphony on a gigantic scale. Shostakovich’s Eighth is music forged from blood, fire and steel – colossal, uncompromising, and so powerful that after the war the authorities banned it. Jonathon Heyward conducts and joins an RSNO favourite – saxophonist Jess Gillam – in a thriller from Anna Clyne: an Irish legend of banshees and night terrors, told in music like you’ve never heard.

If you’ve seen Amadeus, you’ll already know the myth of Mozart’s Requiem – the masked stranger, the secret commission, the doomed composer. But the music itself is even more incredible, and tonight Principal Guest Conductor Patrick Hahn joins the RSNO Chorus and a terrific team of guest singers to bring the legend to life. The whole concert is just as haunting – with a rarely heard gem from Beethoven and the superb violinist Carolin Widmann as soloist in Berg’s entrancing concerto.

As we pay tribute to the 50th anniversary of Shostakovich’s death, Thomas Søndergård brings our Concert Season to a close in truly epic style: opening with the jubilant trumpets of the Festive Overture and joining Daniel Müller-Schott (‘Fearless’ – The New York Times) in a Cello Concerto that feels more like a Cold War thriller. It doesn’t get more powerful than this.

Young people can attend all RSNO Classical concerts for free with their friends. Phone the Box Office or visit in person to book your tickets. Under 26s and mature students

Patrons with disabilities

Patrons with disabilities and their carers are entitled to 50% off full-price single tickets. Disabled concessions are not applicable to multibuy prices. Wheelchair spaces are available in price band V. Level entry to the ground floor is on the Grindlay Street side of the building’s new wing, with lift access to all levels of the hall. There’s a loop system in place for hearing aid users (switch your hearing aid to the T position) and assistance dogs are very welcome.

Ticket Exchanges

Customers who purchase 4+ concerts with our multibuy offer can exchange their tickets for another RSNO concert in the current Season, subject to availability. Tickets must be returned to the Box Office at least 24 hours before the concert. An administration charge of £1 per ticket will apply for all exchanges. Any surplus amount must be paid at the time of exchange. Customers who purchase all 17 Classical concerts can receive a refund for a maximum of two concerts. Please

note that the Box Office is unable to process ticket exchanges on performance evenings. Alternatively, you can donate the value of your ticket towards the RSNO’s Appeal. Please email marketing@rsno.org.uk to inform us of your kind donation at least 24 hours before the concert.
