Patrick Hahn, Principal Guest Conductor

We are thrilled to introduce Patrick Hahn as our new Principal Guest Conductor. Patrick first conducted the Orchestra back in November 2022, when he stepped in for indisposed Conductor Emeritus Alexander Lazarev. ‘Hahn seemed born to the task. Nothing spoke more clearly of that than the luxurious, penetrating response he triggered from the RSNO…’

War creates lies, but it also exposes uncomfortable truths, and as the Soviet Union faced the onslaught of Nazi Germany in 1943, Shostakovich poured his feelings into a symphony on a gigantic scale. Shostakovich’s Eighth is music forged from blood, fire and steel – colossal, uncompromising, and so powerful that after the war the authorities banned it. Rachmaninov loses himself in a painting and takes a surprisingly passionate journey into darkness. Guest conductor Nodoka Okisawa savours both tonight in a concert which just brims with atmosphere, whether it’s the delicacy of Tōru Takemitsu’s How Slow the Wind or Helen Grime’s musical skyscape for Håkan Hardenberger. The world’s greatest classical trumpeter? We think so – but hearing is believing…

Wagner’s Ring cycle is an epic in every sense. The full experience takes four days, but this orchestral ‘adventure’ gives you a taste of The Ring – all its majesty, power and drama – in just over an hour! First, though, we welcome our Partnership Ensemble, Dunedin Consort, for Handel’s enchanting Water Music before the Consort’s period instruments lock horns with the full RSNO, in a world premiere from Edinburgh composer Neil T Smith.

‘For me, personally, music has been a way to inspire others,’ says Randall Goosby – and that generosity of spirit is just one reason why we’re delighted to have this talented American violinist as Artist in Residence. He opens our concert together with Associate Artist Kellen Gray and young musicians from Glasgow Instrumental Music Services, before showcasing Mendelssohn’s magical, endlessly tuneful Violin Concerto. Music Director Thomas Søndergård conducts, and also shares the gripping First Symphony by Lera Auerbach – a tale of love, death and impossible dreams, from a composer who believes that ‘every concert is about being transformed.’

Shostakovich Festive Overture

Shostakovich Cello Concerto No2

Shostakovich Symphony No11 The Year 1905

Thomas Søndergård Conductor Daniel Müller-Schott Cello

Officially, Shostakovich based his massive Eleventh Symphony on the Russian revolution of 1905, but this blockbuster of a symphony is still grippingly relevant today. As we pay tribute to the 50th anniversary of Shostakovich’s death, Thomas Søndergård brings our Concert Season to a close in truly epic style: opening with the jubilant trumpets of the Festive Overture and joining Daniel Müller-Schott (‘Fearless’ – The New York Times) in a Cello Concerto that feels more like a Cold War thriller. It doesn’t get more powerful than this.

Not long ago, the Danish String Quartet decided to try and do things a little differently - they took the intimacy and colour of the classical string quartet and brought it into conversation with the untamed beauty of Scandinavian folk music. Two hit albums were the result – Wood Works and Last Leaf – and today, as part of Nordic Music Days, four RSNO string players perform music from them live. With a fresh take on some old tunes, this is music that will inspire our string players to new heights!

Bridge Phantasy for Piano Quartet

Fauré Piano Quartet

RSNO Chamber Ensemble

Still waters run deep. Gabriel Fauré was modest, witty and elegant; always a popular guest in the glittering salons of Paris’ Belle Époque. Real passion surges beneath the beautiful surface of his chamber music, and four RSNO players will bring it to life today, as well as rediscovering the gorgeous (and startlingly emotional) music of the neglected British composer Frank Bridge. He was Benjamin Britten’s favourite teacher, and you can really tell.

Schubert String Quintet in C major RSNO String Quintet

Franz Schubert certainly knew how to write a tune, but even by his standards the C major String Quintet is something special. There’s a reason why this piece is a regular choice on Desert Island Discs: it traces the composer’s journey from blackest despair to radiant happiness, and at its heart is one of the most sublimely beautiful slow movements in all music. Join our five RSNO musicians for what will be a truly memorable event.

When string players want to unwind, they gather up some friends and play Mendelssohn’s Octet: half an hour of enchantment, romance and rocketing exuberance from the pen of a 16-yearold genius with his imagination on fire. It’s one of those pieces that leaves smiles on the faces of performers and listeners alike. No wonder Artist in Residence Randall Goosby has asked to lead this performance with seven RSNO players.
