Shostakovich Festive Overture
Shostakovich Cello Concerto No2
Shostakovich Symphony No11 The Year 1905
Thomas Søndergård Conductor Daniel Müller-Schott Cello
Officially, Shostakovich based his massive Eleventh Symphony on the Russian revolution of 1905, but this blockbuster of a symphony is still grippingly relevant today. As we pay tribute to the 50th anniversary of Shostakovich’s death, Thomas Søndergård brings our Concert Season to a close in truly epic style: opening with the jubilant trumpets of the Festive Overture and joining Daniel Müller-Schott (‘Fearless’ – The New York Times) in a Cello Concerto that feels more like a Cold War thriller. It doesn’t get more powerful than this.

Alba G Corral Live Visuals
The RSNO returns to Sonica Glasgow 2024 with the Scottish Premiere of John Luther Adams’ Pulitzer Prize and GRAMMY Award-winning piece, Become Ocean. An ebbing and flowing sonic journey, Become Ocean is a meditation on the vast, deep and mysterious tides of existence. Adams said, ‘As the polar ice melts and sea level rises, we humans find ourselves facing the prospect that once again we may quite literally become ocean.’ Alba G Corral paints real-time large-scale kaleidoscopic digital landscapes in response to the music for a truly immersive experience.

Danish String Quartet Wood Works
Danish String Quartet Last Leaf
RSNO String Quartet
Not long ago, the Danish String Quartet decided to try and do things a little differently - they took the intimacy and colour of the classical string quartet and brought it into conversation with the untamed beauty of Scandinavian folk music. Two hit albums were the result – Wood Works and Last Leaf – and today, as part of Nordic Music Days, four RSNO string players perform music from them live. With a fresh take on some old tunes, this is music that will inspire our string players to new heights!

Beethoven’s Septet
Sun 30 Mar 2025: 2.30pm
NEW AUDITORIUM, GLASGOW ROYAL CONCERT HALL
Beethoven Septet Coleridge-Taylor Nonet
RSNO Chamber Ensemble
Lively, melodious and brimming over with personality, the music of British composer Samuel Coleridge-Taylor was hugely popular before WWI. When you hear his delightful Nonet today, you’ll realise why. A team of RSNO players pair it with one of the young Beethoven’s greatest hits. Symphonic drama and intimate confessions; lilting dances and irresistibly catchy melodies: the exuberant, life-affirming Septet has got it all. Summer arrives early in Glasgow!

RSNO Chamber Ensemble
Kellen Gray Presenter
You are in for a treat as RSNO Associate Artist Kellen Gray shares some of his favourite music for chamber ensemble! Ravel’s rarely heard Introduction and Allegro – considered by many to be a little harp concerto – is the sparkling centrepiece in a concert which opens with the folk-inspired melodies of Kodály’s Hungarian classic and closes with the passionate personal testimony of African American composer Coleridge-Taylor Perkinson. Come and experience these wonderful pieces live this spring, starring the talented musicians of the RSNO.

NEW AUDITORIUM, GLASGOW
ROYAL CONCERT HALL
J S Bach Matthew Passion
John Butt Director
Dunedin Consort
Bach’s Matthew Passion was first performed on Good Friday 1727. Amidst the drama of betrayal, trial, judgement and crucifixion, there runs a thread of love, both human and divine. Eight singers and two orchestras work together and apart to narrate, comment and reflect on the last days of Jesus’ life.
Tickets £30; U26s, FT students & unemployed £6
Fauré Piano Quartet
Sun 27 Apr 2025: 2.30pm
NEW AUDITORIUM, GLASGOW ROYAL CONCERT HALL
Bridge Phantasy for Piano Quartet
Fauré Piano Quartet
RSNO Chamber Ensemble
Still waters run deep. Gabriel Fauré was modest, witty and elegant; always a popular guest in the glittering salons of Paris’ Belle Époque. Real passion surges beneath the beautiful surface of his chamber music, and four RSNO players will bring it to life today, as well as rediscovering the gorgeous (and startlingly emotional) music of the neglected British composer Frank Bridge. He was Benjamin Britten’s favourite teacher, and you can really tell.
Schubert’s ‘Cello’ Quintet
Sun 18 May 2025: 2.30pm
NEW AUDITORIUM, GLASGOW ROYAL CONCERT HALL
Schubert String Quintet in C major RSNO String Quintet
Franz Schubert certainly knew how to write a tune, but even by his standards the C major String Quintet is something special. There’s a reason why this piece is a regular choice on Desert Island Discs: it traces the composer’s journey from blackest despair to radiant happiness, and at its heart is one of the most sublimely beautiful slow movements in all music. Join our five RSNO musicians for what will be a truly memorable event.
CHAMBER SERIESMendelssohn’s Octet featuring Randall Goosby
Sun 1 Jun 2025: 2.30pm
NEW AUDITORIUM, GLASGOW
ROYAL CONCERT HALL
Price String Quartet No1
Mendelssohn Octet
Randall Goosby Violin
RSNO Chamber Ensemble
Kellen Gray Presenter
When string players want to unwind, they gather up some friends and play Mendelssohn’s Octet: half an hour of enchantment, romance and rocketing exuberance from the pen of a 16-yearold genius with his imagination on fire. It’s one of those pieces that leaves smiles on the faces of performers and listeners alike. No wonder Artist in Residence Randall Goosby has asked to lead this performance with seven RSNO players. Plus, Associate Artist Kellen Gray introduces a neglected gem by a true American pioneer, Florence Price.
