David Niemann Conductor
Neil Sutcliffe Presenter
David Niemann conducts the concerto final of the 2023 Scottish International Piano Competition. The competition attracts many of the world’s brilliant young concert pianists to Scotland, enabling them to gain recognition at an early stage in their careers. Recent finalists, including Can Çakmur, Jonathan Fournel, Pavel Kolesnikov and Tom Poster, have gone on to enjoy major international careers following their success in the competition. Hear three virtuosos in the concerto of their choice, and experience the excitement of the final performances and awards ceremony live.
Heiner Goebbels Songs of Wars I Have Seen
Ellie Slorach Conductor
Musicians from RSNO and Dunedin Consort
A set of tabletop and standard lamps, illuminating the stage as a living room. The female musicians at the front of the stage performing on both period and modern instruments, playing and then reading text from the wartime diaries of Gertrude Stein. The score carefully mixing Matthew Locke’s music of the 17th century with that of today. Experience a musical event like no other as the RSNO joins forces with the period instruments of Dunedin Consort to perform Heiner Goebbels’ profoundly moving Songs of Wars I Have Seen.
The concert will be followed by a talk with composer Heiner Goebbels, conductor Ellie Slorach and RSNO Artistic Adviser Gillian Moore.
SHOWCASE DUNEDIN CONSORT CHAMBER SERIESDvořák String Sextet
Sun 12 Nov 2023: 2.30pm
Mendelssohn-Hensel String Quartet
Dvořák String Sextet in A major RSNO String Sextet
‘I compose only for my own pleasure,’ said Antonín Dvořák – and in his String Sextet he had the time of his life. It’s an endless stream of his most glorious melodies, filled with headlong energy, exuberant humour and deep, sweet romance, and complete with his trademark Czech dance-rhythms. As much fun to hear as it is to play, our team of RSNO string players pair it today with the lovely, lyrical String Quartet by Fanny Mendelssohn-Hensel. Pure musical sunshine: come and feel the warmth!
A Festive Celebration
Sun 17 Dec 2023: 2.30pm

Jay Wilcox Welcome all Wonders
Leontovych Carol of the Bells Trad, arr. Howard Cable The Twelve Days of Christmas
RSNO Brass Ensemble
RSNO Chorus Academy
Aimee Toshney Director, RSNO Chorus Academy
RSNO Chorus
Stephen Doughty Director, RSNO Chorus
No music says ‘it’s Christmas’ quite like the bright shining sound of a brass ensemble – unless it’s carols from a choir in full, joyous, festive voice. Put the two together and the result is an afternoon of seasonal magic. RSNO Principal Trumpet Chris Hart and Chorus Director Stephen Doughty make it happen today, in a Christmas spectacular featuring everything from the Carol of the Bells to a very special version of The Twelve Days of Christmas. Seriously: you just have to hear it!
ITFri 2 Feb 2024: 7.30pm
Musicians from RCS and RCS Junior Conservatoire Musicians from RSNO
‘There’s so much talent in Scotland,’ says film composer Patrick Doyle. ‘Our country is capable of anything.’ Tonight, as part of his 70th birthday celebrations, this Oscar-nominated graduate of the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland shares his gifts with a new generation of musicians, as student performers join forces with RSNO members to perform his acclaimed score for the 1927 silent movie IT – a sensational, star-studded rags-to-riches drama from the golden age of Hollywood. It’ll sound like a million dollars.
Patrick Doyle ITSimon Trpčeski Recital
Sun 18 Feb 2024: 2.30pm
Beethoven Variations on a Russian Theme
Tchaikovsky Selections from The Seasons
Prokofiev Sonata No7
Simon Trpčeski Piano
When Macedonian pianist Simon Trpčeski performs solo you can be sure of two things: playing of captivating imagination and colour, and an afternoon of music that adds up to infinitely more than just a wonderful noise. From the playfulness of Beethoven’s delightful Variations to the iron and steel of Prokofiev’s wartime Sonata – by way of Tchaikovsky at his most magical – no pianist combines poetry and panache quite like Trpčeski. A flamboyantly colourful recital from a pianist with charisma – and brilliance – to spare.
RSNO Presents
Dunedin Consort Matthew Passion
Thu 21 Mar 2024: 7pm
JS Bach Matthew Passion
Sof i Jeannin Director
Joshua Ellicott Evangelist
Matthew Brook Christus
Dunedin Consort
From the intractable swell of the opening chorus to the profound solemnity of the last, the Matthew Passion contains some of the most exquisite music that Bach ever composed. And there are few greater interpreters than the Dunedin Consort, whose annual performance has become a must-see event. Their intimate, one-per-part interpretation has set a benchmark for the genre, highlighting the very human story at the centre of this staggering musical masterpiece.
RSNO Presents
Sean Shibe meets Dunedin Consort
Sat 13 Apr 2024: 7.30pm
Music by Dowland, Purcell, Sir James MacMillan, Linda Catlin Smith and Cassandra Miller
John Butt Director
Sean Shibe Lute and Guitars
Dunedin Consort
Guitarist Sean Shibe takes centre stage in this folk-inspired programme, which traces the roots of the Scottish-Canadian diaspora in music from the Renaissance to the present day. From the exquisite delicacy of the Scottish lute manuscripts and Dowland’s heart-rending Lachrimae, we course through Purcell and Geminiani to meet Sir James MacMillan’s timeless From Galloway and Linda Catlin Smith’s Sinfonia – united by their irresistible blend of modernism and folksong. And at its zenith, modern guitar meets gut strings in a brand-new guitar concerto from the award-winning Canadian composer, Cassandra Miller.
Woodwind Wonders
Sun 28 Apr 2024: 2.30pm
Poulenc Trio for Oboe, Bassoon and Piano
Debussy Syrinx for Solo Flute
Thea Musgrave Niobe for Oboe and Tape
Debussy Première rhapsodie for Clarinet and Piano
Caplet Quintet for Piano and Winds
RSNO Woodwind Ensemble
Few chamber line-ups are more colourful than a wind ensemble. It’s like a big musical paintbox from which composers have drawn some of their liveliest and most tuneful inspirations. And since the RSNO’s wind players are some of the best in the business, expect melody, fun, and sounds of pure enchantment when they explore the world of myth and mystery. From Debussy to Scotland’s own Thea Musgrave, enjoy this wonderfully imaginative afternoon of music.
Brilliant Brass
Sun 19 May 2024: 2.30pm
Including:
Mozart arr. John Wasson Overture to The Magic Flute
JS Bach arr. Dudley Bright Selections from Goldberg Variations
Bernstein arr. Jack Gale Suite from West Side Story
RSNO Brass Quintet
Nothing entertains like a brass quintet – and the RSNO’s world-class brass section always puts on a great show! Today’s concert takes them from 18thcentury Austria to the streets of New York; from the electrifying dance rhythms of West Side Story to the timeless beauty of JS Bach’s sublime Goldberg Variations. It’s all performed with virtuosity, panache and the spine-tingling sound of five top-notch brass players having the time of their lives. Come and join the fun!
Simon Trpčeski & Friends
Sun 9 Jun 2024: 2.30pm
Pande Shahov Plaits
‘We are accustomed to thinking of Simon Trpčeski as a superlative pianist,’ wrote The Independent when Trpčeski founded Makedonissimo! in 2018. ‘On the evidence of this concert he’s also a multiinstrumentalist with a winning sound as a folk singer; he’s also a bandleader and an accomplished MC.’ Enough said, except that if you’ve heard Trpčeski’s explosive performances with the full RSNO… well, he’s even more dazzling with this hand-picked folk band, cutting loose in the untamed folk music of his native Macedonia. Hold tight!
