Caird Hall, Dundee 2023 : 24 Concert Season

Welcome

Welcome to the RSNO’s new Concert Season at the Caird Hall. From exciting new music to popular classics, there’s something for everyone to enjoy.

Don’t miss our Music Director Thomas Søndergård in action! He opens the Season with a cracker of a concert, including both Grieg’s Piano Concerto and Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition, before returning in March with Mendelssohn’s magical A Midsummer Night’s Dream.

At Christmas we have two treats for you. Radio presenter Ken Bruce presents an evening of chart hits, beautifully arranged for orchestra by David Arnold. Plus, our annual Christmas Concert returns featuring The Snowman on the big screen.

We celebrate the music of the greatest film composer of our time, John Williams, in February. Then, to bring the Season to a close, we welcome the wonderful young musicians of Big Noise Douglas for a special side-by-side performance and our sensational Leader Maya Iwabuchi takes centre stage with Vaughan Williams’ The Lark Ascending.

I very much look forward to seeing you at a concert soon.

Mussorgsky’s musical depiction of his friend’s picture exhibition is an electrifying showpiece. Glowing skulls, dancing chickens, medieval minstrels and the Great Gate of Kiev: they’re all there, painted in sound and large as life when Thomas Søndergård conducts this ear-tingling opening concert of the new RSNO Concert Season. Add Lera Auerbach’s fiery Greek myth, and the fabulous Lise de la Salle in Grieg’s ever-popular piano concerto and you have the perfect recipe for a spectacular night out with Scotland’s National Orchestra.

From Star Wars to Harry Potter, Jaws to Superman, whether you’re swashbuckling with Indiana Jones or cycling through the air with a little alien who just wants to phone home, you already know the tunes. The music of John Williams has given us some of the greatest cinematic adventures of our lives, and no-one understands these scores better than movie maestro Richard Kaufman. Experience the thrill of these legendary soundtracks live in concert –plus a special premiere from our Film Composers Lab winner – performed by the full force of Scotland’s National Orchestra.

Enjoy both words and music (including that Wedding March), plus a lively overture by Felix’s sister Fanny and our incredible RSNO Youth Chorus in a 21st-century celebration of the names that we give to birds, beasts and plants.
