U n i o n G e n e r a l M e e t i n g l a s t t e r m M r . D.C.Howe, who was i n t h e C h a i r as V i c e P r e s i d e n t , s t a t e d i n answe r t o a q u e s t i o n t h a t t h e f i n e s and t h e c o s t s w o u l d be p a i d by t h e U n i o n , a n d t h a t t h e f u n d s w o u l d be r a i s e d b y a dance and a v o l u n t a r y c o l l e c t i o n . T h i s announcement was g r e e t e d w i t h a c c l a m a t i o n a n d a p p a r e n t l y g e n e r a l a p p r o v a l , and a h i g h l y s u c c e s s f u l " w h i p r o u n d " h a s a l r e a d y b e e n made on t h i s b a s i s . H o w e v e r , i t i s now r e p o r t e d t h a t a t a m e e t i n g o f t h e E x e c u t i v e C o m m i t t e e on J a n u a r y 1 6 t h i t was s u g g e s t e d ' t h e t t h e U n i o n s h o u l d pay t h e c o s t s , b u t t h a t t h e s t u d e n t s c o n c e r n e d s h o u l d pay t h e i r own f i n e s . I t was h e l d t h a t f o r t h e U n i o n t o pay t h e f i n e s w o u l d a p p e a r as a c o n d o n a t i o n o f t h e o f f e n c e , w o u l d s e t a d a n g e r o u s p r e c e d e n t , a n d w o u l d a c t as an i n c e n t i v e t o students t o break the law i n f u t u r e . The s t u d e n t s c o n c e r n e d , and many o t h e r s , h o l d s t r o n g v i e w s a b o u t t h i s . They f e e l t h a t t h e f a c t t h a t t h e y were a r r e s t e d was i n t h e n a t u r e of a l u c k o f t h e d r a w , t h a t i n many c a s e s t h e y w e r e among t h e l e s s e r o f f e n d e r s , a n d t h a t t h e y were merely t h e u n l u c k y scapegoats f o r p o l i c e d i s a p p r o v a l o f what was e s s e n t i a l l y a C o l l e g e a f f a i r . They h o l d t h a t i f t h e U n i o n pays t h e f i n e s i t w i l l be r e c o g n i s i n g t h i s , w h e r e a s i f t h e y pay t h e y w i l l h a v e a p e r m a n e n t b l o t on t h e i r e s c u t c h e o n s . T h e y a l s o c l a i m t h a t i f p u n i s h m e n t be deemed n e c e s s a r y t h e y have a l r e a d y s u f f e r e d s u f f i c i e n t l y w i t h t h e i r p r o t r a c t e d a n x i e t y and t h e i n d i g n i t y o f a p p e a r i n g i n c o u r t on comparatively serious charges. I a d m i t I was t i r e d , and w i t h a yawn g l a n c e d f r o m t h e p a p e r I was r e a d i n g t o my w a t c h . Funny how s l o w t h e s e c o n d h a n d moves when w a t c h e d ; i t seemed t o g e t e v e n s l o w e r and t h e n . . . . s t o p p e d . T h e r e was a s i l e n c e , a h o r r i d c o l d s i l e n c e , an e m p t i n e s s , a v o i d . I was c o n s c i o u s f o r a moment o f my own s e l f i n my b o d y , I was l o c k e d i n , doomed. I n d e e d , t h e s e mixed m a t c h e s , w h i c h h a v e c a u s e d s o much i n t e r e s t , w e r e i n t e n d e d p r i m a r i l y as p r a c t i c e . T h e i r u s e f u l n e s s can be measured by t h e s u c c e s s e s s c o r e d by t h e women, who h a v e l o s t o n l y one o f t h e i r 4 l e a g u e m a t c h e s and one o f t h e i r 3 o r d i n a r y f i x t u r e s .
