EDITORIAL Mr. S e l l a r s „ I t was w i t h s u r p r i s e a n d r e g r e t t h a t we h e a r d t h e d e c i s i o n of t h e R e f e c t o r y C o m m i t t e e t o d i s p e n s e w i t h t h e s e r v i c e s o f our b u t l e r , Mr. S e l l a r s . The d e c i s i o n was made, o f c o u r s e , i n t h e i n t e r e s t s o f economy, b u t t h i s w i l l i n f a c t be s m a l l , s i n c e a n o t h e r p e r s o n w i l l have t o be employed t o t a k e over h i s d u t i e s " b e h i n d t h e s c e n e s , " s u c h as s t o r e - k e e p i n g . He was t h e p e r s o n whom p e o p l e u s u a l l y c i t e d when t h e y c r i t i c i s e d the Refectory f o r being overstaffed, apparently b e l i e v i n g t h a t he d i d n o t h i n g b u t s t a n d a n d l o o k l i k e a b u t l e r . - 2 SPEAKING PERSONALLY, When w r i t i n g t h e E d i t o r i a l t h i s week I f o u n d t h a t t h e r e were a number o f t h i n g s I w i s h e d t o s a y w h i c h c o u l d n o t p r o p e r l y be s a i d i n a n E d i t o r i a l , s i n c e t h e y were p u r e l y p e r s o n a l s e n t i m e n t s . I t h e r e f o r e d e c i d e d t o grant myself space f o r a personal a r t i c l e . We who s t a r t e d F e l i x d i d s o i n t h e b e l i e f t h a t t h e r e was a n e e d f o r a p a p e r w h i c h w o u l d r e p o r t , p u b l i c i s e a n d comment upon C o l l e g e a c t i v i t i e s , and p r o v i d e e n t e r t a i n m e n t without! d e t e r i o r a t i n g i n t o a " M u c k r a k e . " As i t t u r n e d o u t , t h e p r o v i s i o n of e n t e r t a i n m e n t has proved t h e h a r d e s t r e q u i r e m e n t , b u t t h e e x p e r i m e n t seems t o h a v e b e e n a s u c c e s s a n d F e l i x i s W e l l established. A l t h o u g h t h e paper i s f i n a n c i a l l y r e s p o n s i b l e t o C o u n c i l , and e x i s t s b y t h e i r c o n s e n t , i t i s f r e e t o e x p r e s s s u c h o p i n i o n s as i t s e e s f i t . The C o m m i t t e e met on 2 2 / 5 / 5 0 , a n d a f t e r t h e u s u a l p r e l i m i n a r y b u s i n e s s d i s c u s s e d t h e q u e s t i o n of t h e r e d u c t i o n of S e l l a r s , w i t h t h e r e s u l t a l r e a d y known. The d i s s a t i s f a c t i o n i n some q u a r t e r s w i t h t h e t i c k e t s y s t e m I n t h e New Lounge was t h e n r a i s e d , a n d t h e s u g g e s t i o n p u t f o r w a r d t h a t , as a n experiment', a c r u s h r a i l be i n s t a l l e d , w i t h a cash r e g i s t e r and desk a t t h e end. Apart from t h e f a c t t h a t t h e D a n c i n g C l u b , who u s e t h e room t h r e e n i g h t s a week, w o u l d n o t l i k e t h e i d e a , a n d t h e f a c t t h a t we h a d no c a s h r e g i s t e r a v a i l a b l e , t h e m a i n o b j e c t i o n was t h a t i t w o u l d a l m o s t c e r t a i n l y c a u s e t h e s e r v i c e t o be s l o w e r . When t h e t i c k e t s y s t e m was f i r s t I n t r o d u c e d t h e queue was t i m e d , a n d t h e a v e r a g e t i m e was f o u n d t o be a b o u t a q u a r t e r o f what i t h a d p r e v i o u s l y b e e n when c a s h 'was t a k e n a t t h e c o u n t e r . I n v i e w o f t h i s i t was d e c i d e d t h a t t h e t i c k e t s y s t e m s h o u l d be r e t a i n e d , i n s p i t e of i t s m i n o r i r r i t a t i o n s . The i d e a o f p u t t i n g on a c h e a p l u n c h a t l / 6 d was t h e n d i s c u s s e d . I t was f e l t t h a t when M r , Coomber p u t t h e i d e a t o the Union G e n e r a l M e e t i n g t h e f u l l s i g n i f i c a n c e of t h e s u g g e s t i o n was n o t a p p r e c i a t e d , a n d t h a t i t w o u l d be w e l l w o r t h w h i l e t o t r y i t as a n e x p e r i m e n t f o r a f o r t n i g h t . By t h e t i m e t h i s a p p e a r s t h e e x p e r i m e n t w i l l h a v e b e e n g o i n g f o r a week, a n d i t i s h o p e d t h a t i t w i l l p r o v i d e t h e a n s w e r t o t h o s e who r e q u i r e a s a t i s f y i n g l u n c h a t a l o w p r i c e . P h i l l i p s P r i c e moved a m o t i o n u r g i n g t h e f u l l e s t d e v e l o p m e n t o f B r i t a i n ' s s c i e n t i f i c r e s o u r c e s and manpower. Some f i f t e e n M.P.s spoke d u r i n g the f o u r hour debate w h i c h was p a c k e d w i t h I n t e r e s t i n g and ( m o s t l y ) w e l l i n f o r m e d comment. One of t h e r e c u r r i n g themes was t h e q u e s t i o n of t e c h n o l o g i c a l e d u c a t i o n and a number o f s p e a k e r s r e f e r r e d t o I m p e r i a l C o l l e g e i n t h e c o u r s e of t h e i r r e m a r k s . Mr. P r i c e made r e f e r e n c e s t o t h e 1851 E x h i b i t i o n a n d s u g g e s t e d t h a t p e r h a p s t h e 1951 E x h i b i t i o n was a g r e a t o p p o r t u n i t y f o r f u r t h e r development i n t e c h n i c a l e d u c a t i o n . Mr. W . W e l l s , u r g i n g h i g h e r s a l a r i e s f o r t e a c h e r s a t u n i v e r s i t y l e v e l and r e f e r r i n g t o t h e s h o r t a g e of t e c h n o l o g i c a l manpower s a i d he f o u n d "some t r e p i d a t i o n i n s p e a k i n g when g r a d u a t e s o f t h e I m p e r i a l C o l l e g e o f S c i e n c e a r e I n f r o n t o f me." Mr. W e l l s e x p r e s s e d s u s p i c i o n "o f the i d e a of p u t t i n g t o g e t h e r a g r e a t many t e c h n o l o g i s t s b r o a d l y f o l l o w i n g t h e same k i n d o f inclined c a r e e r and s t u d y and c a l l i n g them a u n i v e r s i t y , I was t o a r g u e ?
