I n t h e s e c o n d h e a t I.C. met L e n s b u r y R.C. ; t h i s t i m e I.C. h a d t h e o t h e r s t a t i o n a n d b y t h e e n d o f t h e f i r s t b e n d w e r e h a l f a l e n g t h down b u t r o w i n g w e l l t h e y p r o c e e d e d t o row t h e i r o p p o n e n t s down and s o o n r e g a i n e d t h e l o s t g r o u n d a n d went i n t o t h e lead.

J h e n w i t h t h e advantage o f t h e s t a t i o n and good l i v e l y r o w i n g t h e y p u l l e d away t o w i n b y a length.

The b e s t e f f o r t h o w e v e r came i n t h e f i n a l when S t . P a u l ' s S c h o o l were t h e opponents.

St. Paul's went away f r o m t h e s t a r t a n d s o o n h a d h a l f a l e n g t h ' s l e a d , t h i s was r e c o v e r e d o n t h e f i r s t b e n d , w h i c h was i n I . C . ' s f a v o u r , I . C . c o n t i n u e d t o i m p r o v e t h e i r p o s i t i o n a n d a t a b o u t t h e h a l f w a y mark t h e y were a l e n g t h up.

Then S t . r a u l ' s r a l l i e d magnif i c e n t l y a n d f o u g h t b a c k h a r d a n d p u s h e d I.C. a l l length. t h e way t o t h e f i n i s h , I.C. w i n n i n g b y T h i s s u c c e s s i s a g r e a t t o n i c f o r I.C. r o w i n g and augers w e l l f o r H e n l e y w h i c h t h i s y e a r w i l l be o n J u l y 4 t h , 5 t h , 6 t h a n d 7 t h , when many o v e r seas crews w i l l p r o v i d e tough o p p o s i t i o n .

The I . C . t e n n i s t e a m e n t e r e d t h e f i n a l o f t h e U.L. Cup b y b e a t i n g K i n g ' s 5 - 4 o v e r no l e s s t h a n 5 days.

The f i r s t d a y ' s p l a y o n S a t u r d a y 2 6 t h May was s t o p p e d when o n l y t w o s e t s h a d b e e n p l a y e d so i t was d e c i d e d t o c o n t i n u e o n t h e f o l l o w i n g Tuesday.

B u t when T u e s d a y e v e n i n g came, i t wa s f o u n d t h a t v.'right, one o f o u r f i r s t - p a i r , wa s s t i l l e n g a g e d i n a t o u r n a m e n t a t S u r b i t o n , s o S m i t h , who had p r e v i o u s l y b e e n a n o n - p l a y i n g c a p t a i n , t o o k u p arms i n a h a s t i l y r e c o n s t r u c t e d f i r s t p a i r .

E a r l i e r i n the a f t e r n o o n , Forbes and Macdonald h a d t w i c e won a f t e r b e i n g v e r y c l o s e t o d e f e a t a n d Grossman a n d Watson h a d c o m f o r t a b l y b e a t e n t h e i r o p p o s i t e t h i r d p a i r , b u t h a d l o s t t h e i r o t h e r two rubbers.

So a t t h e c r u c i a l s t a g e , t h e r u b b e r s s t o o d a t t h r e e a l l a n d t h e new f i r s t p a i r h a d t o w i n two o f t h e i r t h r e e matches t o b r i n g v i c t o r y .

L i g h t p e r m i t t e d o n l y one match t o be p l a y e d t h a t evening and b e f o r e t h e u s u a l suppertime crowd, t h e I.C. p a i r w e r e b e a t e n i n t h r e e s e t s b y t h e K i n g ' s first string.

Things, therefore, looked black f o r I.C. when t h e b a t t l e wa s r e s u m e d o n F r i d a y J u n e 1 s t .

Cur p a i r s t a r t e d b a d l y l o s i n g t h e f i r s t s e t 6 - 2 .

T h e i r p l a y improved i n t h e second s e t w h i c h , amid t h e c h e e r s a n d a p p l a u s e o f some 150 s u p p o r t e r s , t h e y won i n r e c o r d t i m e .

We f e e l t h a t t h e s u p p o r t o f t h e r e s i d e n t s i n c h o o s i n g t h i s moment t o p a r a d e t o a p h o t o g r a p h a n d a f t e r w a r d s make a mass r e a p p e a r a n c e had i t s e f f e c t o n b o t h s i d e s .

After leading 4 - 1 and d r o p p i n g two m a t c h p o i n t s a t 5 - 4, t h e home s i d e were once w i t h i n t w o p o i n t s o f d e f e a t .

However, t h e y r a l l i e d a n d e v e n t u a l l y won 11 - 9The f i n a l r u b b e r was n o t w i t h o u t i t s t h r i l l s . I n t h e f i r s t s e t we w e r e down 4 - 0 b u t t o o k t h e s e t a t 6-4 a n d went o n , a m i d t h e g a t h e r i n g d u s k , t o w i n t h e second s e t and t h e match. .Vhether we w i n t h e f i n a l o r n o t , t h i s m a t c h w i l l c e r t a i n l y be remembered a s t h e one i n w h i c h S m i t h played a captin's innings.

While i t i s true t h a t t h e c h o i r and t h e o r c h e s t r a are each r u n by a member o f s t a f f , i t w o u l d be d i f f i c u l t t o f i n d a student w i l l i n g t o t a k e on e i t h e r arduous duty.

I f a c t i v e members o f t h e M u s i c a l S o c i e t y e v e r comp l a i n that the s t a f f are having too b i g a say i n m u s i c a l a f f a i r s , t h e n , and o n l y t h e n , i s an e n q u i r y i n t o t h e r u n n i n g o f t h i s body c a l l e d f o r . I t s h o u l d be r e c a l l e d t h a t t h e I v i u s i c a l S o c i e t y i s one o f t h e few w h i c h c o - o p e r a t e a t a l l w i t h s t a f f o r t a k e a n y part i n inter-college a c t i v i t i e s .

I t seeme d , he h a d t h o u g h t , a s though t h e w o r l d t r a v e l l e d r o u n d t h e m , w h i l e t h e y were s t a n ding s t i l l , only pulsating dreamily i n the even rhythm o f t h e music.

What g i f t was t h i s , s o r e c e n t l y a h a l f - s e e n v i s i o n o f t h e n i g h t , b u t now a p a r t o f h i m , b l e n d i n g w i t h h i s movements, so c l o s e aa t o d r i v e o u t t h e separate-ess f r o m between them, h e r hand h o l d i n g h i s f a s t , her f a c e l y i n g a g a i n s t t h e tweed o f h i s j a c k e t , t h e i n t o x i c a t i n g perfume o f h e r h a i r s o o t h i n g h i s head b u r i e d t h e r e .

Most c o n d u c i v e t o a possible introduction of lechery into Imperial College i s t h e i n s t i t u t i o n known a s the'Bar' .

On t h e v e r y n i g h t o f t h e F E L I X d a n c e t h i s p l a c e was f i l l e d w i t h members o f t h e B o a t C l u b , who w e r e h o l d i n g a a (not undeserved) c e l e b r a t i o n .

I n c r e d i b l e as i t may s e e m , a n d a l t h o u g h I h a v e no p o s i t i v e p r o o f , I am q u i t e c e r t a i n m y s e l f t h a t some p e o p l e i n t h e ' B a r ' t h a t evening h a d been p a r t a k i n g o f a l c o h o l i c l i q u o r .

I n d e e d , I was ftcrced t o t h e o p i n i o n t h a t t h e r e was one g e n t l e m a n t h e r e who was VERY NEARLY INTOXICATED! Q u i t e s h a m e l e s s l y , he was s i n g i n g a t t h e t o p o f h i s v o i c e a song.

I must hope t h a t I was n o t h e a r i n g t h e w o r d s c o r r e c t l y , f o r some o f them s u g g e s t e d t h a t i t was n o t t h e t y p e o f s o n g s u i t a b l e f o r a g a t h e r i n g o f G o d - f e a r i n g oarsmen.

However, t h e 'Bar' i s n o t t h e o n l y cause o f d i s q u i e t t o my m i n d .

Our f e a r s w e r e e v e n more p r o n o u n c e d when two o f o u r h i g h e r g r a d e s , W o o l d r i d g e and A l d r e d , b o t h b l u e b e l t s , were u n a v o i d a b l y prevented from p a r t i c i p a t i n g .

So i t was t h a t I.C. f a c e d C a m b r i d g e o n J u n e 6 t h u n d e r t h e e a g l e eye o f Mr. G . K o i z u m i , who had k i n d l y consented t o judge.

K n o w i n g t h e home w a t e r s o f K.C.3.C. t o b e ' u p r i v e r ' a t S h e p p e r t o n o n t h e Thames, t h e w i n d l e s s dawn o f t h e d a y o f t h e r a e e seemed t o b o d e i l l f o r I.C.S.C., u s e d t o t h e r o u g h w a t e r s o f t h e 'Welsh Harp' i n w i n t e r .

H o w e v e r , t h e l i g h t and t e m p e r a m e n t a l b r e e z e t h a t e v e n t u a l l y came u p , i n t i m e f o r t h e f i r s t r a c e , seemed t o b a f f l e K i n g ' s c o m p l e t e l y .

The I.C. helmsmen , u s e d t o r a c i n g r e g u l a r l y f o r U.L., were f i r s t o v e r t h e l i n e , and K i n g ' s were n o t s e e n again u n t i l they staggered i n t o f i l l the l a s t three places.

I n t h e s e c o n d r a c e , when t h e I.C. c r e w s and helmsmen c h a n g e d p l a c e s , K i n g ' s w e r e a g a i n p l a c e d f o u r t h , f i f t h and s i x t h , w i t h , h a p p i l y , no p r o t e s t s in either race; and i f t h e y l e f t f e e l i n g r a t h e r s u b d u e d , i t was n o t due t o a n y l a c k o f f r i e n d l i n e s s , as was shown b y t h e s h a r i n g o f a s u s t a i n i n g l u n c h p r o v i d e d j o i n t l y b y t h e r e f e c t o r i e s o f I . S . and K.CL. Some members o f I.C.S.C. r e m a i n e d t o s a i l o f f h e a t s i n the c h a m p i o n s h i p , w h i c h has been h e l d throughout the year.
