The n i g h t a t H a r l i n g t o n was p r e c e d e d b y a n ICU g e n e r a l m e e t i n g on Hov. 1 s t . , a t w h i c h t h e a r r a n g e ments were a n n o u n c e d b y t h e P r e s i d e n t , M r . D.K. N i c o l a s . ' We were i n f o r m e d t h a t t r o u b l e had b e e n e x p e r i e n c e d o v e r t h e f i r i n g o f r o c k e t s and t h a t t h i s w o u l d have t o be done a t a t i m e t o be d e c i d e d by t h e L o n d o n A i r p o r t ; a l s o t h a t n o V e r y L i g h t s were t o be u s e d , on P o l i c e and L o n d o n A i r p o r t i n s t r u c t i o n s . However, t h e m e e t i n g had i t s b r i g h t e r moments, a s when a n e n q u i r e r q u e s t i o n e d w h e t h e r t h e b e e r was s t r o n g enough t o be a b l e t o s t a n d b e f o r e s a l e , and a l s o i n d e b a t i n g w h e t h e r t o d e f e n d t h e U n i o n a g a i n s t a t t a c k w h i l e most o f i t s members were at Harlington. T h i s b e i n g n e a r London A i r p o r t , the whole i n t e r n a t o n a l f i e l d was a f f e c t e d , and many r e p o r t s have come i n o f h i g h l y p l a c e d D i p l o m a t s c a n c e l l i n g T h e i r f l i g h t s and m a k i n g s u r r e p t i t i o u s d i v e r s i o n s t o P r e s t w i c k and Lympne. Of c o u r s e t h e A i r p o r t o f f i c i a l s d i d t h e i r bes t by i n s i s t i n g t h a t the l a u n c h i n g o f a l l r o c k e t s e x c e e d i n g a h u n d r e d f o o t c e i l i n g be r e f e r r e d t o t h e a i r p o r t c o n t r o l t o w e r . However t h e announcement t h a t 'none o f our a i r c r a f t a r e m i s s i n g c a n o n l y be p r o v i s i o n a l a s i t i s b e l i e . v e d a number o f r o c k e t s t i c k s have s t i l l t o r e t u r n t o e a r t h , a n d may c a u s e u n i m a g i n e a b l e havoc y e t . But t h i s was j u s t c h i l d s - p l a y compared w i t h t h e d a n g e r s on t h e g r o u n d , and i t i s f e a r e d t h a t many y o u n g men f o u n d i t n e c e s s a r y t o e x e r c i s e t h e i r p r o t e c t i v e powers o n t h e i r c o m p a n i o n s . D a i - F a w k e s , i n h i s r o b e s , was b u r n t on h i s death-bed', j u s t b y t h e g a t e s , s u r r o u i d e d b y a h o w l i n g mob o f d i a b o l i c a l l y metamorphosed s t u d e n t s , w i t h a n a r c h i s t i c g l i n i s i n t h e i r e y e s . I n f a c t t h i s t e m p o r a r y d i s t o r t i o n was so g r e a t t h a t a l o n e d r i n k e r was l a t e r h e a r d t o comp l a i n t h u t he c o u l d no l o n g e r recognisedany o f h i s friends. The f o r m a l C o n v e r s a z i o n e f o l l o w e d on Thursday e v e n i i j g , o r g a n i s e d by t h e M i n e s ' U n i o n f o r t h e R.S.M. Association. The e x c i t e ments o f t h e G e n e r a l E l e c t i o n and t h e s p i r i t one e x p e c t s o f a 'Mines N i g h t ' combined t o make a memorable e v e n i n g . A l t h o u g h t h e r e s u l t s o f t h e e l e c t i o n were no l o n g e r i n d o u b t , t h e P r e s i d e n t o f t h e U n i o n drew a p p l a u s e w i t h t h e a n n ouncement t h a t Mr. C h u r c h i l l had b e e n summoned t o Buckingham P a l a c e . &
The T a t l e r p h o t o g r a p h e r s were i n e v i d e n c e and wrought havoc o n t h e dance f l o o r and among t h e t a b l e s . T h e r e were t h e u s u a l c l a n d e s t i n e e f f o r t s -some s u c e s s f u l - t o a v o i d t h e Gro^v'enor House c o r k a g e . About m i d n i g h t t h e band showed t h e i r m e t t l e by a n impromptu r e n d e r i n g o f t h e M i n e s Song : a crowd o f M i n e s s u r g e d t o t h e f l o o r t o j o i n t h e i r P r e s i d e n t i n s o n g . I n a s h o r t speech a f t e r w a r d s , D a v i d G r i f f i t h s , i n t r o d u c e d by t h e P r e s i d e n t o f I.C. U n i o n , t h a n k e d t h e C o l l e g e f o r a l l o w i n g t h e B a l l t o be a'Mines o c c a s i o n ' . The B a l l ended a t 2.0 a.m. but back i n t h e U n i o n and i n t h e H o s t e l t h e p l a y i n g o f m u s i c a l i n s t r u m e n t s c o u l d be h e a r d u n t i l t h e e a r l y hours. A q u i e t weekend f o l l o w e d . At t h e S a t u r d a y hop a l a r g e s e c t i o n o f t h e d a n c e r s were n o t i c e ably l e s s a c t i v e than u s u a l .

T h i s wasn't a bad e f f o r t but i t c e r t a i n l y w a s n ' t a s . g o o d a s one w o u l d e x p e c t f r o m a g r e a t c o l l e g e s u c h a s o u r own. R e c e n t l y e v e n t h i s has been c o n t r a c t e d t o the r e - i t e r a t i o n o f " I . C . I.C.-I.C.-..." A l a n Reec e came t o t h e C o l l e g e i n O c t o b e r 1 9 4 1 , a s a f i r s t y e a r G e o l o g i s t . A t t h e end o f i t h e i s e s s i o n he J o i n e d t h e N a v y , was c h o s e d a s a member o f t h e N a v a l E x p e d i t i o n t o Graham's L a n d and s p e n t two and a h a l f y e a r s i n t h e A n t a r t i c . On b e i n g demobbed he r e j o i n e d t h e G e o l o g y D e p a r t m e n t and t o o k h i s de d e g r e e i n 1 9 4 9 . W h i l e a t C o l l e g e he gave some f a s c i n a t i n g l e c t u r e s t o t h e De L a B e c h e C l u b and t h e N a t u r a l H i s t o r y S o c i e t y on t h e A n t a r t i c and i t was no s u r p r i s e when he j o i n e d , t h e B r i t i s h - S c a n d i n a v i a n E x p e d i t i o n t o Maudheim L a n d . On a t t a i n i n g h i s M.A. i n Mathematics, Deryck forsook h i s native pastures i n Yorkshire to apply his' knowledge t o the b e n e f i t of R o l l s Royce i n D e r b y . He i s now t h e p r o u d p o s s e s s o r o f two c a r s , but a l a s a l t h o u g h the sun s t i l l s h i n e s h i s s t a n d a r d s have d e t e r i o r a t e d s i n c e t h o s e p l u t o c r a t i c days. Oxford a p p a r e n t l y s t i l l h e l d a great, a t t r a c t i o n so he r e t u r n e d t h e r e f o r a f u r t h e r two y e a r s t o l e a r n t o "Relax" under the l e a d e r s h i p of S i r R i c h a r d S o u t h w e l l , w i t h whom D e r y c k , a s a member o f s t a f f , , came t o J.C. i n 1943. This i t i s g a t h e r e d was a memorable o c c a s i o n i n more ways t h a n one s i n c e he a r r i v e d a t t h e h e i g h t o f an a i r - r a i d ' and had t o s p e n d t h e n i g h t on S t . P a n c r a s S t a t i o n . As a s p o r t s m a n h i s i n t e r e s t s a r e w i d e and varied. S o c i a l l y Deryck i s a great asset to anything w i t h w h i c h he i s a s s o c i a t e d . A f l y i n g c h i p o f r o c k damaged t h e r i g h t eye o f t h e g e o l o g i s t , A l a n R e e c e , when he was t a k i n g a sample o f t h e r o c k on 1 1 t h M a r c h , d u r i n g t h e summer's s l e d g i n g . I met him e i g h t d a y s l a t e r and e x a m i n e d t h e eye, b u t no t r e a t ment was p o s s i b l e a t t h a t s t a g e as we were t h r e e weeks' j o u r n e y f r o m Maudheim. When we a r r i v e d a t Maudheim on 3 0 t h May, t h e d e v e l o p m e n t o f t h e eye c o n d i t i o n was uns a t i s f a c t o r y , so I c o n s u l t e d by w i r e l e s s t h e eye s p e c i a l i s t , P r o f e s s o r S v e n L a r s s o n , o f L u n d , Sweden, w i t h r e g a r d t o t r e a t m e n t . During the t r e a t m e n t my f e a r s were c o n f i r m e d t h a t t h e o t h e r eye was i n g r p v e d a n g e r o f b e c o m i n g a f f e c t e d , w h i c h w o u l d have r e s u l t e d i n t o t a l b l i n d n e s s ; o n l y t h e r e m o v a l o f t h e damaged eye c o u l d s a v e this. With the p r o f e s s o r ' s advice I decided to o p e r a t e w i t h i n a week. i had n e v e r b e f o r e p e r f o r m e d o r s e e n s u c h a n o p e r a t i o n , and no one e l s e a t K a u d h e i m had had e x p e r i e n c e o f a s s i s t i n g i n an o p e r a t i o n . I s t a r t e d preparations immediately, informing o n l y a few members o f my i n t e n t i o n s so as n o t to a l a r m the whole base. The p h o t o g r a p h e r , S t i g H a l l g r e n , was t h o r o u g h l y i n s t r u c t e d i n t h e t e c h n i q u e o f i n t r a v e n o u s anaesthesia., and t r a i n e d h i m s e l f on s e v e r a l members, i n c l u d i n g m y s e l f , by giving vitamin injections. The g e o l o g i s t , F r e d Roots, was^selected to a s s i s t i n the o p e r a t i o n , and t h e g l a c i o l o g i s t , V a l t e r S c h y t t , was taught the o p e r a t i n g nurse's task of h a n d l i n g the instrument t a b l e . A t t h i s s t a g e , Reec e was i n f o r m e d t h a t t h e o p e r a t i o n was n e c e s s a r y , and gaVe h i s c o n s e n t , a n d i t mas d e c i d e d t h a t i t s h o u l d t a k e p l a c e The dog d r i v e r , P e t e r M e l l e b y , t h r e e days l a t e r . c o n s t r u c t e d the o p e r a t i o n t a b l e from s l e d g i n g b o x e s , and an o x y g e n mask f r o m s p a r e " w e a s e l " parts. O p e r a t i o n l i n e n was sewn f r o m s h e e t s , and g a u z e , t o w e l s , l i n e n and i n s t r u m e n t s were sterilized. The t e l e g r a p h i s t , E g i l R o g s t a d , was i n s t r u c t e d i n t a k i n g b l o o d p r e s s u r e , and t h e a s s i s t a n t s were g i v e n a l e s s o n i n s t e r i l i t y and o p e r a t i n g teamwork.

The " O l d C o l o n i a l s " f o r e g a t h e r e d f o r t h i s t e r m ' s f i r s t m e e t i n g i n C o m m i t t e e Room A. . Though w a r n e d by t h e i m p o r t o f l i q u i d refreshment, those h a l l o w e d w a l l s must have been d i s t i n c t l y s u r p r i s e d a t the sudden t r a n s i t i o n from C o u n c i l ' s g r a v e d e l i b e r a t i o n s t o M a o r i and A f r l o a n war c r i e s . The c l u b was f o u n d e d so t h a t s t u d e n t s f r o m t h e D o m i n i o n s and o t h e r Commonwealth t e r r i t o r i e s , and e v e n t h e U.S.A., may meet i n a c o n v i v i a l a t m o s p h e r e t o d i s c u s s e a c h o t h e r s ' c o u n t r i e s and c u s t o m s , and the p e c u l i a r l i f e l i v e d i n these i s l a n d s . The o v e r seas f r e s h e r s d i d not f i n d the n a t i v e brew too r e p e l l e n t , and any p r e t e n c e o f f o r m a l i t y v a n i s h e d s o o n a f t e r K e n B o c k h a d r e a d what he c l a i m e d were t h e m i n u t e s o f t h e p r e v i o u s me e t l n g . The p r o c e e d i n g s were h i g h l y e n j o y a b l e and t h i s s h o u l d p r o v e t h e f i r s t o f a number o f p l e a s a n t e v e n i n g s d u r i n g the year.

E v e r y t h i n g was i n o r d e r on 2 1 s t J u l y f o r the o p e r a t i o n , w i t h almost every f a c i l i t y of At a s m a l l h o s p i t a l , except female nurses. 2 o ' c l o c k I p u l l e d t h e g l o v e s on, and w h i l e t h e a s s i s t a n t s completed the s t e r i l i t y arrangements I a r r a n g e d t h e i n s t r u m e n t s on t h e t a b l e . At 2.45 Reece made an i m p r e s s i v e l y b r a v e e n t r a n c e , "You c l i m b e d t h e o p e r a t i o n t a b l e and- s a i d : know, I am s c a r e d s t i f f i n s i d e . " I t h e n began the a d m i n i s t r a t i o n of the intravenous anaesthetic. When t h e p a t i e n t was a s l e e p , H a l l g r e e n t o o k o v e r w h i l e I c h a n g e d g l o v e s and p r e p a r e d the operating area.

T h i s i s a very g r a t i f y i n g s t a t e o f a f f a i r s , and, i n d e e d , i s adequate e x e m p l i f i c a t i o n o f the v a l i a n t s p i r i t abroad i n I.C. to-day. F o r , a f t e r a l l , the horse i s a huge, hard, h i g h , animal w i t h t e e t h and hooves that from l e a d i n g d i s t a n c e appear o f monstrous p r o p o r t i o n s . T h i s , however, has not daunted the 1951 f r e s h e r s who a r e , f o r the most p a r t , beginner s and nor should i t , f o r I.Cf. R i d i n g Club has always been proud Of i t s low death r a t e . There appear t o be two t h i n g s which n o r m a l l y d e t e r beginners from t a k i n g up r i d i n g (apart from l a c k o f a h o r s e ) . One i s the expense o f r i d i n g equipment, the o t h e r i s the s m a l l matter o f p e r s o n a l comfort. The f i r s t does not apply s i n c e a t the I.C. R i d i n g Club no equipment i s r e q u i r e d . N a t u r a l l y , a stout p a i r o f breeches helps c o n s i d e r a b l y i n the r e t e n t i o n o f one's a b i l i t y to walk but ( l i k e walking) t h i s i s not e s s e n t i a l . The second? W e l l , there i s a b s o l u t e l y no discomfort i n r i d ing. The discomfort comes i n l e a r n i n g t o r i d e . And even a f t e r one's f i r s t r i d e , a c o l d b a t h and v i o l e n t e x e r c i s e s f o r three q u a r t e r s o f an hour the next morning w i l l leave no after-effects. Or p r a c t i c a l l y none. The p e r i o d i c i t y o f r i d e s a t the moment i s phenomenal, the average approaching bi-weekly. T h i s w i l l not be maintained s i n c e as the y e a r wears on, the imminence o f exams and the gener a l downward t r e n d o f bank b a l a n c e s w i l l apply a g l u t t e brake.
