I . C . l o s t the fir»t round of the i n t e r - c o l l e g e debating championships to Goldsmith's C o l l e g e by 65 p o i n t s to 70. I t h i n k i t would be g e n e r a l l y agreed by most .of those present ( c h i e f l y members o f Goldsmiths) that g i v e n even the s m a l l e s t support from I.C. men and women, we might q u i t e wiell have c a r r i e d the debate. A c o n s i d e r a b l e e f f o r t w i l l be made t h i s year to encourage support o f debates, and we hope I.C, w i l l change i t s present s c o r n f u l a t t i t u d e to such u n p r a c t i c a l pastimes and take some p a r t i n the p l e a s ures they a f f o r d . One o f the beet debates o f recent months was held i n the U.L.U. Hut on 23rd November, but although i t was comparatively w e l l a t t e n ded (as debates g o ) , members o f I.C. Union were conspicuously absent. The motion before the House was t h a t " T h i s House b e l i e v e s t h a t the f i r s t a l l e g i a n c e o f the c r e a t i v e a r t i s t i s to h i m s e l f . The p r i n c i p a l speakers were from the U n i v e r s i t i e s o f Cambridge, C a r d i f f , D u b l i n , S t . Andrews, Sheff i e l d and London; and the motion was c a r r i e d by a narrow margin. I t i s a great p i t y t h a t there seems to be very l i t t l e enthusiasm f o r debating among members o f I.C. Union and even among members o f U.L.U. because i t mean's that an o l d and v a l u a b l e University a c t i v i t y i s being neglected. Debating as we know i t has been a s s o c i a t e d w i t h the Univ e r s i t i e s f o r over a hundred y e a r s and modern debating has i t s o r i g i n s i n the s c h o l a s t i c d i s p u t a t i o n s p r a c t i s e d i n the mediaeval U n i v e r s i t i e s . Other U n i v e r s i t i e s have s t r o n g debating t r a d i t i o n s and i t i s to be hoped that some e f f o r t w i l l be made to make debating a r e g u l a r p a r t o f Union a c t i v t i t y at I.C. as w e l l as at U.L.

I t i s a great honour that Dr. Reginald Jacques should have undertaken the r e g u l a r conducting o f the I.C.Choir. Dr.Jacques succeeded i n p u t t i n g a p o l i s h on the c h o i r s i n g i n g that gave r e a l d i s t i n c t i o n to the performance o f P a r t I I o f Bach's Christmas O r a t o r i a . The two s o l o i s t s , E i l e e n P r i c e and Bryan C o r r i e , sang i n a manner worthy of the conductor and of the o c c a s i o n . Vaughan W i l l i a m s ' 100th Psalm - performed by the C h o i r on Commemoration Day - gained immeasureably from the b e t t e r a c o u s t i c s o f the Q.A.H. concert h a l l compared with the U n i v e r s i t y Great H a l l . The other v o c a l works i n c l u d e d groups of madrigals and c a r o l s , and. 'aisme charming s o l o s sung by E i l e e n P r i c e . Of the Jacques. Orchestra one can only say that they amply maintained t h e i r high r e p u t a t i o n f o r s e n s i t i v e p l a y i n g and ensemble; p a r t i c u l a r l y i n t h e i r e x q u i s i t e rendering o f a P u r c e l l Chacony, and the joyous and vigorous p e r f o r mance of H o i s t ' s St.Paul's S u i t e -

VIEWPOINT- THE HOSTEL Dear S i r , Your correspondent " S c e p t i c u s " caused me a c e r t a i n amount o f amusement with h i s a r t i c l e on the Hostel.Here I thought was a f u t u r e P r e s i d e n t of the Bowling Club - a club with p r i v a t e changing rooms and a pokerd i c e s c h o o l on the f i f t h f l o o r o f what i n the bad o l d days was termed t h e H o s t e l . However, when y o u , s i r , _informed me- that these proposals were not i n j e s t I was somewhat annoyed. I , t h e r e f o r e , c a r e f u l l y s c r u t i n i s e d the viewpoint. My annoyance melted t o p i t y . P i t y f o r a student who so completely missed the object o f College l i f e (which i s what h i s a r t i c l e p r i m a r i l y a t t a c k s and not s o l e l y the H o s t e l ) . P i t y f o r a gentleman who has so l i t t l e f a i t h i n human nature. P i t y f o r a f e l l o w whose i n t e r e s t s are so narrow t h a t he i s l i a b l e t o "become a brown bagger i n s e l f defence". P i t y f o r a, s e l f appoint ed o u t c a s t . For s u r e l y the main and r a t h e r broad o b j e c t o f a r e s i d e n t i a l c o l l e g e l i f e i s to a f f o r d one an opport u n i t y o f f i n d i n g one's f e e t i n l i f e . Most students come t o I.C. d i r e c t from a s h e l t e r e d home and school l i f e o r even from a r a t h e r unnatura l s e r v i c e l i f e . By e n t e r i n g the H o s t e l they o b t a i n an e x c e l l e n t opportunity to l e a r n a c o n s i d e r a b l e amount about t h e i r f e l l o w s and, what i s perhaps more important, about themselves. No one can deny that there i s a back-slapping and noisy r u g e r - t a l k i n g f a c e t t o n many s i d e d H o s t e l l i f e . Why should i t be denied anyway? The world i s made up o f a g r e a t v a r i e t y o f types o f whom t h i s p a r t i c u l a r group i s one that must r e c e i v e a t t e n t i o n l i k e the r e s t . Our job i s not to t u r n away not agree with t h e i r views out we must l e a r n to t o l e r a t e them. This we p a r t i a l l y do by the numerous i n f o r m a l d i s c u s s i o n s t h a t take place n i g h t l y over cups o f c o f f e e . Again, examinations give a f a i r i d e a o f a b i l i t y at one's s t u d i e s but one needs the chance o f a s s e s s ing one's non-academic p o t e n t i a l i t i e s . Surely i t i s a great asset to know how others w i l l r e a c t to one's own views and methods o f d e a l i n g with people,before venturing i n t o the competitive outside world. A period of recuperation followed, when he f o u n d h i m s e l f a c o m f o r t a b l e n i c h e , a s a s a p p e r s u b a l t e r n , on t h e Rock o f G i b r a l t a r . The war was by t h i s t i m e o v e r , and he was a b l e t o take f u l l advantage of the base to f u r t h e r h i s r e s e a r c h i n t o the h a b i t s , and a n c i e n t c u s t o m s o f t h e S p a n i s h mainland. He i n d i g n a n t l y d e n i e s t h a t c o n c e r n i n t h e f a l l o f t h e ape p o p u l a t i o n was t h e r e a s o n f o r h i s p o s t i n g . MORPHY-DAY The weather was f i n e , w i t h a f r e s h south e r l y wind and a f a s t ebb t i d e , as t h e t h r e e crews paddled up t o the s t a r t o f the Morphy Oup. RSM. were on the Surrey s t a t i o n , O&G. i n t h e Centre and ROS. on Middlesex . O.A.Brletow got them o f f t o a p e r f e c t s t a r t } the Mines, i n t h e f a s t e r water went i n t o the l e a d a t onoe and were ahead a t t h e end o f the f i r s t minute, as t h e crews approached Harrods. .Here, however, as t h e Mines lengthened out, they dropped t h e i r r a t i n g and work a l i t t l e too muoh and t h e C&G., t a k i n g f u l l advantage o f t h i s went i n t o the l e a d a t once. A much improved orew, they had l e a r n t the v a l u e o f l e t t i n g the boat r u n between the s t r o k e s and g i v i n g themselves the time t o work r e a l l y hard. 0
BOXING
Quite a l a r g e audience witnessed a f i n e performance by I.C. Boxing Club when they beat King's C o l l e g e by 4 bouts t o I i n the gymnasium on Tuesday 27th November. Malcolm Muir, who i s t o be c o n g r a t u l a t e d on h i s twice b e i n g s e l e c t e d t o r e p r e s e n t U.L. t h i s season, gave I.C. the lead by winning the f i r s t bout from D . J e s s e t t on a v e r y c l o s e p o i n t s d e c i s i o n . K i n g s ' drew l e v e l when the v e r s a t i l e .L.Dujon gained a p o i n t s d e c i s i o n over John Davies but were h a r d l y i n the p i c t u r e d u r i n g the r e s t of the evening. A f t e r a q u i e t e x h i b i t i o n bout by two boxers from Goldsmiths' C o l l e g e , Peter Harding put I.C. ahead when he gained the v e r d i c t over J.Sharpe. Len Palmer, the I.C. F l y w e i g h t , d e l i g h t e d the s p e c t a t o r s w i t h some e x c e l l e n t boxing i n h i s exh i b i t i o n w i t h R.Leigh. Len c e r t a i n l y earned the applause a t the end o f the bout s i n c e he was a stone l i g h t e r than h i s opponent. The l a s t two bouts of the evening both y i e l d e d p o i n t s v i c t o r i e s f o r the I.C. men, B i l l Shepherd b e a t i n g D . G i l l and R i c k y F o r s c h e r b e a t i n g the amusingly unorthodox R.Campbell.
FENCING There have been no deaths i n the Club t h i s year. T h i s i s probably due to the high proportion o f beginners. ( I must, i n pass i n g , r e c o r d the f a c t t h a t there have been no births either; but the reason f o r t h i s escapes me.) The c l a s s e s on Monday and Thursday evenings have been w e l l a t t e n d e d , and there i s p l e n t y o f t a l e n t among t h i s year's newcomers, amongst whom we have f o u r from I.C.W.A. Owing t o an a c c i d e n t , f o r which we were not r e s p o n s i b l e , t o M. L^on P a u l , we have been short o f one i n s t r u c t o r f o r the whole o f the term, but Mr. Z a b i e l s k i , pronounced George, has been c a r r y i n g on s u c c e s s f u l l y alone . On the sole o c c a s i o n t h i s term on which we were able to employ our f u l l team, we beat the P o l y t e c h n i c 16 - 11. The remainder o f our matches a g a i n s t King's C o l l e g e H o s p i t a l , St. P a u l ' s , Westminster, Dulwich C o l l e g e , a g a i n s t whom we l o s t narrowly 13 - 1 h , were l e s s s u c c e s s f u l - owing to t h e c l a i m s , and e f f e c t s , of another I.C. Club,'the U n i v e r s i t y and the Commemoration B a l l on members o f the team.
JUDO In the f i r s t match o f the y e a r , King's C o l l e g e d e c i s i v e l y beat the I.C. team by three matches to n i l , w i t h f i v e draws (1+ p o i n t s to n i l ) , although most matches were hard f o u g h t . The beginners ' bouts ended u s u a l l y i n draws, as i s so o f t e n the case b e f o r e many throwB have been mastered. Both o f King's (3rd Kyu) score d two p o i n t s o f f P h i l l i p s , I.C. (2nd Kjru) , the f i r s t b e i n g a p a r t i c u l a r l y w e l l executed a n k l e throw. Our P r e s i d e n t , K. A. E v e r a r d (1st K|ru) d i d w e l l a g a i n s t Wetenhall (1st Kyu) , who i s rumoured to have been p r a c t i s i n g hard o f l a t e . V/etenhall threw E v e r a r d only once, by a cunning ashiguruma-cum-osotogari. A l l members o f the I.C. C l u b , not only those i n the team, w i l l have to p r a c t i s e h a r d e r , i f f u t u r e matches a r e to end more f a v o u r a b l y f o r I.C.

The Lowry Oup race was v e r y e x c i t i n g and w e l l fought out, between an experienced C&G crew who knew how t o row, but a i d not g i v e thems e l v e s the time t o work, and a v e r y i n e x p e r i e n c e d RSM. crew who r e a l i s e d only too w e l l t h e i r l i m i t a t i o n s as oaremen and so contented themselves w i t h a r a t i n g t h a t s u i t e d them and gave them the o p p o r t u n i t y t o " d r i v e the blade t o move the b o a t " . O&G. went ahead at the s t a r t , but would not s e t t l e down and a " r u s h " developed,, RSM. hung on and began t o row them down. Opposite the boathouaes, w i t h RSM. l e a d i n g and l o o k i n g capable o f winning, a "crab" i n the G u i l d s boat, (which was very w e l l and q u i c k l y r e c o v e r e d ) , gave the Mines an unforesee n £ l e n g t h , which they had made i n t o a f u l l l e n g t h a t the f i n i s h . The ROS. orew, g i v i n g away n e a r l y two stone p e r man, were no matoh f o r t h e i r h e a v i e r opponents, and though rowing a plucky r a c e , were unable t o come w i t h i n s t r i k i n g d i s t a n c e . CROSS-COUNTRY {Sat. 1 s t . Dec: U n i v e r s i t y Championships. This year's race promises to be a very open a f f a i r - best summarised by the D a i l y Telegraph "the team t i l t e should pass from king's C o l l e g e t o London School ofEconomics or Imperial C o l l e g e " . A l l three c o l l e g e s were f i e l d i n g s t r o n g teams almost the e n t i r e U n i v e r s i t y 1st and 2nd teams a r e drawn from them. The I.C. team got away to t h e i r u s u a l hopeless s t a r t - a f a . i l i n g which must be overcome v.hen running i n f i e l d s o f about two hundred. However, ».Garrod. shot up from about t h i r t i e t h to twelfth d u r i n g the second mile, and F.Bagley worked h i s way up to the l e a d e r s . Thus, at the f i n i s h I.C. had three i n the f i r s t ten, and f i v e i n twenty, running i n very comfortable winners. I t was a very f i n e e f f o r t by the whole team, i n a year when the U n i v e r s i t y running i s o f such a h i g h standard.
