C . on t h e eve o f t h e i r r e t u r n home, a f t e r nearly s i x months t o u r i n g , -Stephen F r y , the w i n g f o r w a r d (whose b r o t h e r i s f l y h a l f ) and Ben Myburgh d i s p l a y e d t h a t charm w h i c h seems t o be so n a t u r a l to South A f r i cans. No s u b j e c t was t o o t r i f l i n g or so oft discussed not to be t r e a t e d w i t h c o n sideration, while p l a y e r s a b o u t whom t h e r e i s much c o n t r o versy in Britain, came t h r o u g h w i t h n e v e r a hard word. A . E . R . F r y the eldest of the family was a G u i l d s m a n , b e i n g a member o f t h e L i n k s c l u b , Capt. of U . L . R . F . C and V i c e - P r e s i d e n t of G u i l d s i n ' 3 7 - ' 3 8 . M i s s Prudence H i l l , T h i s year's h o n . V i c e - P r e s i d e n t gave a v e r y s t i m u l a t i n g and e n t h r a l l i n g t a l k about her r e c e n t .three months' v i s i t t o t h e U n i t e d S t a t e s . She d e Âť c r i b e d w i t h g r e a t v i v i d n e s s h e r j o u r n e y by o a r f r o m New York s o u t h t h r o u g h t h e s t a t e s o f V i r g i n i a and t h e C a r o U n a s down t o Hew O r l e a n s and up t h r o u g h t h e W e a l t h o f T e x a s t h e monotony o f M e x i c o , t h e b a r r e n a n d p r i m a e v a l mountains of A r i z o n a , through C a l i f o r n i a and up t o San F r a n c i s c o . T h r o u g h o u t t h i s j o u r n e y she had made a searching study of the v a s t l y v a r y i n g p e o p l e s and t h e c o u n t r y she saw, and c o l lected a store of l i v e l y impressions of t h e way o f l i f e and t h e modes o f t h o u g h t o f t h e A m e r i c a n p e o p l e s . By t a l k i n g w i t h t h o s e she m e t , a t t e n d i n g u n i v e r s i t y l e c tures, v i s i t i n g schools, art galleries and museums, H i s s H i l l o b t a i n e d a v a r i e d and f a s c i n a t i n g i n s i g h t i n t o A m e r i c a n S o c i o l o g y . She g a v e a t h o u g h t f u l a n d l i b e r a l a n a l y s i s of t he American outlook as i t appeared t o h e r , a f o r e i g n e r i n t h e i r c o u n t r y j b u t she was c a r e f u l t o s t r e s s t h a t t h e s e were h e r own o p i n i o n s and therefore subject to e r r o r s . Though h a n d i c a p p e d by a s e v e r e c o l d , Miss H i l l ' s obvious i n t e r e s t i n her subj e c t , and h e r a p t i t u d e f o r t r a n s m i t t i n g her enthusiasm, aroused everyone p r e s e n t into a d i s c u s s i o n i n which prejudices and n o t i o n s a b o u t t h e ' S t a t e s were r e examined and much r e v i s e d . A s t h i s was s u c h an i n t e r e s t i n g e v e n i n g , i t i s hoped t o h o l d a s i m i l a r I f u n c t i o n e a r l y next t e r m . HABLEQUINADE

' T h e " M a t h e m a t i c s i s a v e r y s i m p l e s u b j e c t , and i n t e r e s t i n g m a t h e m a t i c s a u d i e n c e was a p p r e c i a t i v e a n d s y m i s very simple indeed." Having proposed such a q u e s t i o n , t h e l e c t u r e r t h e n , w i t h some d i s a g r e e m e n t f r o m t h e a u d i e n c e , d e f i n e d a good m a t h e m a t i c i a n as one who c a n n o t o n l y s o l v e t h e p r o b l e m , b u t one who t h i n k s t h e p r o b l e m i s a good one. Look through t h i s i s s u e , except f o r t h i s particular article the headline gives a f a i r idea of the context of the a r t i c l e . T h i s means y o u can decide to ignqre i t . Not so w i t h t h e "Morning Press". The i g n o r a n t r e a d e r may b e f o r g i v e n f o r a s s u m i n g t h a t " F i r s t New S t e p s i n M a l a y a " m i g h t c o n c e r n S t a l i n o v s k i s a g r i c u l t u r a l scheme f o r c o n verting the jungle t o steps. The e x a c t n a t u r e of- t h e i r a d v e n t m u s t b e f o r e v e r shrouded i n mystery as f a r a s FELIX i s concerned, f o r two d i f f e r e n t and equally r e l i a b l e eye-witn e s s e s have d e s c r i b e d them t o o u r r e p o r t e r , t h e f i r s t as " a p a i r o f bouncy r e d - h a i r e d t w i n s " , t h e second a s "two l i t t l e grey mice'." I would l i k e t o remind t h i s y e a r ' s freshers o f the T.B.Appeal Fund. T h i s month t h e B r i t i s h s t u d e n t Sponsored T u b e r c u l o s i s F o u n d a t i o n comes i n t o b e i n g . by t h e N a t i o n a l a n d S c o t t i s h U n i o n o f S t u d e n t s , t h e ' B r i t i s h Medical Students Association and the world U n i v e r s i t y s e r v i c e , t h e scheme aims a t p r o v i d i n g , i n a converted mansion near t o both a large sanatorium and a U n i v e r s i t y , a centre t o which tuberculous s t u d e n t s c o u l d g o when t h e y were w e l l enough t o r e s t a r t study during gradual rehabitation. The f i r s t r e p o r t o n t h e p r o g r e s s made b y t h e A p p e a l h a s now b e e n p u b l i s h e d . T h i s shows t h a t t h e average sum c o n t r i b u t e d by U n i v e r s i t i e s , C o l l e g e s a n d Training Colleges i s a t the rate o f 6/- p e r head. The h i g h e s t i n d i v i d u a l r a t e was o b t a i n e d by t h e County T r a i n i n g ! College, Crewe who w i t h o n l y 1 0 0 members, t u r n e d i n o v e r £70. So f a r a t I . C . , - i n t h e summer t e r m o f l a s t y e a r , £237 w e r e collected. It i s hoped, before sending i n o u r c o n t r i b u t i o n , to r a i s e i t t o a figure comparable w i t h t h e n a t i o n a l average. We f e l l t h a t t h e t i m e h a s a r r i v e d f o r a n o t h e r w h i p - r o u n d : 2 s . 6 d . f r o m t h o s e who d i d n o t c o n t r i b u t e before, a n d 6 d . from everyone e l s e . THINKING CR1TJCALLY*

to We h a v e h a d i n F e l i x r e c e n t l y a p l e a dress s t u d e n t s t o adopt a more u n o r t h o d o x s t y l e o f s o t h a t t h e y may e x p r e s s t h e i r i n d i v i d u a l i t y . This a r t i c l e i s a p l e a f o r the student to carry this non-conformity several stages further into the realm of the mind. I t may be b e l i e v e d t h a t i n t h i s C o l l e g e the h a b i t of enquiry and i n t e l l e c t u a l c r i t i c i s m would be v e r y s t r o n g as a r e s u l t o f ' t h e scientific d i s c i p l i n e undergone by s t u d e n t s . Unfortunately i t is in.the lecture theatres, i n which the s t u d e n t ' s day i s passed, t h a t these c r i t i c a l f a c u l t i e s b e g i n t o be a t r o p h i e d . A l l too often s c i e n c e i s p r e s e n t e d as a dogma a n d t h e p a r t s of the subject which are under active c r i t i c i s m are not discussed w i t h the student. Even i f there was t i m e f o r t h e u n d e r g r a d u a t e t o a n a l y s e the u n d e r l y i n g a s s u m p t i o n o f h i s s u b j e c t he w o u l d f i n d h i m s e l f i l l - e q u i p p e d as the s p i r i t and technique of enquiry are buried under the accumulation of facts necessary for the passing of examinations. When i t comes t o s u b j e c t s o u t s i d e the s t u d e n t ' s p a r t i c u l a r s p e c i a l i s a t i o n t h e same a t t i tude of i n t e l l e c t u a l apathy i s apparent. This acceptance of ideas without adequate enquiry into a s s u m p t i o n s a n d i m p l i c a t i o n s i s one o f t h e blights of modern l i f e . I f a system of i d e a s i s h e l d by the 'right people' i t i s accepted, not on i t s i n t r i n s i c m e r i t s but f o r reasons essentially e x t r a n e o u s t o i t s own t e r m s o f r e f e r e n c e . This a p p l i e s i n a l l spheres, p o l i t i c s and the a r t s bei n g p a r t i c u l a r l y s u s c e p t i b l e , and to a l l shades of opinion. A s u p p o r t e r o f P i c a s s o c a n be a s n o n c r i t i c a l as a s u p p o r t e r o f M u n n i n g s , and as much swayed by f a s h i o n . T h e r e was a t i m e when a l l u n i v e r s i t y students w e r e b e l i e v e d t o be ' r e d ' . T h i s t e r m was n o t l i m i t e d to i t s p r e s e n t e x c l u s i v e l y p o l i t i c a l meani n g a l t h o u g h t h a t t o o was i n c l u d e d . Bather it i m p l i e d t h a t t h e s t u d e n t was i n t h e f r o n t l i n e of c o n t e m p o r a r y t h o u g h t , a c q u a i n t e d w i t h a l l t h a t was new i n t h e a r t s , p h i l o s o p h y a n d p o l i t i c s a n d m a k i n g h i s own c o n t r i b u t i o n t o t h e m . T h i s no longer s e e m s t o be t r u e , t h e s t u d e n t c o n f o r m s a s m u c h a s a n y o t h e r member o f t h e c o m m u n i t y . But students are s t i l l , i n some r e s p e c t s , a privileged class i n t h a t t h e y have v e r y few r e s p o n s i b i l i t i e s t o tie them down a n d t o f o r c e them t o c o n f o r m . A l l that i s necessary i s for the student to take advantage of t h i s freedom and l i b e r a t e h i s mind. What is n e e d e d i s a more c r i t i c a l e x a m i n a t i o n o f current i d e a s l e a d i n g to more independence of thought. We s h o u l d w e l c o m e s o m e o f t h o s e extravagant f l i g h t s of fancy, p o p u l a r l y a s s o c i a t e d w i t h the s t u d e n t m i n d , w h i c h w o u l d do m u c h t o l i v e n t h e i n t e l l e c t u a l atmosphere. Where a r e t h e anarc h i s t s , the d i s t r i b u t i s t s , the b i - m e t a l l i s t s of yesteryear?

The n o t e s u p p l i e d i n t i m a t e d t h a t the music and poetry of any p e r i o d "reflect the v a l u e s and temper of the s o c i e t y of the time ; great I would contest t h i s statement.The c o m p o s e r s h a v e b e e n men o f s u c h g e n i u s that they have found t h e i r i n s p i r a t i o n i n things quite apart from t h e i r s o c i a l surroundings, i . e . t h e i r i n s p i r a t i o n h a s come f r o m w i t h i n themselves. I have Beethoven i n mind at l w r i t e t h i s . M o z a r t a n d H a y d n do n o t a p p l y to t h e s e r e m a r k s , n o r do t h e more n a t i o n a l i s t i c composers s u c h as C h o p i n . B u t what o f the concert? L e t me s a y a t f i r s t t h a t t h e i d e a o f m i x i n g p o e t r y a n d m u s i c i s a good one i f t h e w o r k s a r e C a r e f u l l y c h o s e n . Shame t o u s t h e n , as a M u s i c a l S o c i e t y , that although the p o e t r y was a d m i r a b l y s e l e c t e d a n d r e a d , the m u s i c d i d n o t come u p t o s t a n d a r d , e i t h e r i n choice or i n performance. A s KENNETH ARTHUR EVERARD h a s n o t y e t a t t r a c t e d t h e attention of " P r o f i l e " , h i s small c i r c l e of friends i n the J u d o C l u b who know h i m a l l t o o w e l l f e e l t h a t t h e y must w r i t e a t r i b u t e before h i s departure to Jamaica. B o r n l e t h a r g i c , h e h a s n e v e r t r i e d t o overcome t h i s h a n d i c a p y e t somehow h e managed t o o c c u r a t G u i l d s i n 1 9 4 8 , equipped w i t h an e n g i n e e r i n g degree w h i c h he found q u a l i f i e d him for a post-graduate c o u r s e i n cement m i x i n g . Despite t h e unaccustomed manual l a b o u r i n v o l v e d he s t i l l had s u f f i c i ent e n e r g y l e f t t o j o i n t h e J u d o C l u b , w h e r e h i s r o t u n d i t y was a t a p r e m i u m , f o r who oan u p s e t a s p h e r e ? A f t e r a somnambulent s e s s i o n a s s e c r e t a r y h e became c a p t a i n i n 1950, which allowed him f u l l s c o p e for h i s unrivalled organising a b i l i t y . The C l u b ' s t o u r o f H o l l a n d l a s t summer was a r r a n g e d b y means o f a s i n g l e l e t t e r w h i c h a r r i v e d at i t s d e s t i n a t i o n only a short time a f t e r the team. He was h a s t i l y e l e c t e d p r e s i d e n t . A l t h o u g h somewhat p r e o c c u p i e d w i t h h i s t h e s i s t h i s y e a r H a l f t h e t e a m who he s t i l l s t r o v e t o t u r n o u t f o r c o n t e s t s . r e m a i n e d t o e s c o r t h i m t o t h e m a t c h w i t h O x f o r d ( F e l i x 18/2/52) were delayed t h r e e h o u r s t h r o u g h h i s l a t e a r r i v a l . H i s c l o s e f r i e n d s w i l l p a r t i c u l a r l y remember h i s c h a r a c t e r i s t i c b l u n t n e s s o f a d d r e s s and h i s a b i l i t y t o bestow a p t nicknames w i t h the a i d o f a s l i g h t m e d i c a l knowledge. In r e t a l i a t i o n one o f h i s v i c t i m s r e f e r r e d t o h i m as " P o d g e " a name w h i c h h a s c l u n g t o h i m e v e r s i n c e . I t must n o t b e t h o u g h t however t h a t h o c o n f i n e d h i s c o l l e g e a c t i v i t i e s e n t i r e l y t o J u d o f o r he was l a r g e l y r e s p o n s i b l e f o r more t h a n one e d i t i o n o f t h e G u i l d ' s E n g i n e e r .
