T H E REWARD O F B A R B WORK The m a t c h was p l a y e d i n s u n s h i n e , o n s o f t t u r f , With very l i t t l e wind. I.e. early revealed a smoothness a t h a l f - b a c k which promised w e l l and the t h r e e - q u a r t e r s c a r r i e d out s e v e r a l good p a s s i n g movements. The f o r w a r d s , the engine o f v i c t o r y i n previous rounds, s e t t l e d to t h e i r task of subduing the q.U.c. pack, but t h i s proved a hard b u s i ness. Up t o h a l f - t i m e t h e r e was no b a l a n c e o f advantage to e i t h e r s i d e . F o r e i g h t e e n monthE M r . P e t e r W a l k e r o f t h e C h e m i c a l E n g i n e e r i n g Department has been p e r f e c t i n g an apparatus to i n v e s t i g a t e the "Condensation of Mixed Vapours". On W e d n e s d a y , 5 t h M a r c h , he c o m pleted its calibration. On T h u r s d a y t h e 6 t h i t erupted i n t o a f o u n t a i n of flame, fragments of g l a s s and molten aluminium. W a r n i n g o f t h e e x p l o s i o n was r e c e i v e d about a m i n u t e b e f o r e i t o c c u r r e d a t 1.10 p . m . when m e r c u r y i n manometers b e g a n t o r i s e s t e a d i l y i n one l i m b a n d f a l l i n t h e o t h e r , a n d a B o u r d o n Gauge r o s e s m a r t l y from nought to t e n atmospheres. When o p e n i n g c e r t a i n v a l v e s f a i l e d t o c h e c k t h i s phenomenal r i s e i n p r e s s u r e , Mr. Walker and the f o u r others i n the l a b . at the time evacuated thems e l v e s i n t h e r e a s o n a b l e e x p e c t a t i o n t h a t they were about to witness the explosion of 5 gallons of l i q u i d oxygen a t t a c h e d to the a p p a r a t u s . In fact a s i n g l e separate g a l l o n of l i q u i d oxygen b u r s t i t s l a r g e Dewar as f i r e d e s t r o y e d a l l wooden and p l a s t i c p a r t s a n d m e l t e d some o f t h e s u p p o r t s . > R e s o l u t e t r e a t m e n t w i t h foam f i r e extinguishers saved the 5 g a l l o n s and rendered the f i r e engine's v i s i t unnecessary. Two e x t i n g u i s h e r s w e r e e m ployed i n p u t t i n g out an e l e c t r i c l i g h t bulb i n c o r porated i n a thermostatic control c i r c u i t , which was f r a n t i c a l l y y g o i n g o n a n d o f f i n a f i t of cybernetic frenzy. M r . W a l k e r ' s a p p a r a t u s was c o m p l e t e l y dest r o y e d and books, c l o t h i n g and other apparatus s u f f e r e d from foam. In the middle of the year of 1921 i n t h e m i n i n g community Morro Velho., B r a z i l , John t h e son o f an o l d R.S.M. student , received h i s first impressions of t h i s wicked world. Eighteen he brought h i s months l a ' t e r p a r e n t s b a c k t o E n g l a n d . He w a s weaned o n w a t e r , ( a n d l a t e r b e e r ) buttered toast, and chocolate biscuits , f o r a l l o f which he s t i l l shows a r e m a r k a b l e affinity. he As s o o n a s h e was o l d enough was s e n t t o s c h o o l a t E w e l l C a s t l e , where E v e n t u a l l y he g a i n e d a cap f o r c r i c k e t and colours for swimming. The U n i v e r s i t y G r a n t s Committee r e c e n t l y presented an Interim report on U n i v e r s i t y Development 1947-51 to the Chancellor o f t h e Exchequer which l e d t o h i s announcement t h a t f o r t h e next q u i n quennium g r a n t s would be i n c r e a s e d - t o U n i v e r s i t i e s not t o s t u d e n t s . The o p i n i o n s i t r a i s e s v e r y from d o w n r i g h t condemnation t o m o r o n i c e f f u s i o n . To a c e r t a i n e x t e n t b o t h viewpoints are understandable! a w e l l produced, w e l l a c t e d amateur p l a y c a n e q u a l o r even s u r p a s s many r e p e r t o r y t h e a t r e p r o d u c t i o n s , w h i l e on t h e o t h e r hand some amateur p l a y s can invoke only f e e l i n g s o f nausea. How s h o u l d a n amateur p r o d u c t i o n b e j u d g e d ? A l l t o o o f t e n e s t a b l i s h e d t h e a t r i c a l s t a n d a r d s a r e i g n o r e d , and a downright bad p r o d u c t i o n t o l e r a t e d on t h e grounds - " w e l l , they are only amateurs." I cannot condone t h i s v i e w a t all. I f a p l a y i s t o r e c e i v e a p u b l i c performance i t s h o u l d be f i t t o b e j u d g e d o n i t s a c h i e v e m e n t s . They, a r e t h e i n t e r n a t i o n a l t r o p h i e s presented to the s p o r t i n g c l u b s of the c o l l e g e by t h e i r o v e r s e a s c o u n t e r p a r t s . I n 1948 a p a r t y of S c a n d i n a v i a n s t u d e n t s working i n t h i s country under the I.C. vacation w o r k scheme p r e s e n t e d t h e b e a u t i f u l l y c a r v e d v i k i n g ship which i s displayed i n the bar. London R . C . were w i n n e r s of the f i r s t raoe i n 1 9 8 6 a n d a p a r t f r o m s h a r i n g t h e H e a d s h i p s w i t h Tha m e s R . C . the f o l l o w i n g year, remained unsurpassed for ten U n t i l the war, with the p o s s i b l e exception years. o f t h e C a m b r i d g e U n i v e r s i t y (Goldto) B . C . i n 1938, no c o l l e g e e r e w had e v e r rowed Head a l t h o u g h t h e two C a m b r i d g e C o l l e g e s , J e s u s a n d P e m b r o k e , h a d b o t h come near doing so. That h o n o u r was r e s e r v e d f o r the I . C . B . C . who w e n t Head i n 1 9 4 6 , b e a t i n g J e s u s , who r e v e r s e d t h e p o s i t t on t h e f o l l o w i n g y e a r a n d w e re t o win again i n 1951. The I . C . B . Oarsmen a r e n o t the most q u i c k w i t t e d and p r e c i s e of m o r t a l s , ana the weekly job o f a r r a n g i n g 1 0 0 - 1 2 0 o f t h e m i n t o some t e n o r s o e i g h t s i s a t i m e consuming and u n e n v i a b l e t a s k . These t e n e i g h t s have t o be p u t i n t o s u i t a b l e b o a t s ; coaches must be f o u n d f o r each orew; t i m e s o f o u t i n g s must be a r r a n g e d ; v a c a n c i e s have to be f i l l e d and s u b s t i t u t e s c o n j u r e d from now'here a t the l a s t minute w i t h o u t undue d i s t u r bance of the lower crews. C . i n t h e i r "great days" of the l a t e twenties and t h i r t i e s . W i t h t h i s accumulation of rowing e x p e r i e n c e , knowledge of crews and c l u b s , of coaches and s t y l e s , of oarsmen and arguments, the I . C . B . C . may r e g a r d t h e m s e l v e s l u c k y i n d e e d t o have t h e i r d e s t i n i e s i n such capable hands.
