U n i o n on T h u r s d a y , 8 t h May, the m o t i o n : " T h a t the Morphy D a y R a g be s e n t t o S a l v a g e * was p a s s e d b y 83 v o t e s t o 37 w i t h 5 a b s t e n t i o n s . I t was a r g u e d t h a t M o r p h y Day was f o r boat r a c i n g not ragging; t h a t the r a g had i n recent y e a r s d e c l i n e d i n s p o n t a n i e t y , enjoyment and s p o r t s manship, and consequently support for i t had a l s o declined. The R . C . S . U n i o n f e l t no l o n g e r i n c l i i n e d to engage i n t h i s r i t u a l t u s s l e w i t h i t s f r i e n d s in Guilds. The o p p o s i t i o n a p p e a l e d to t r a d i t i o n , and w h i l e a g r e e i n g t h a t t h e M o r p h y R a g was n o t a t p r e s e n t sati s f a c t o r y , h e l d t h a t i t s h o u l d be i m p r o v e d r a t h e r than abolished. The A n n u a l E x h i b i t i o n o f t h e P h o t o g r a p h i c S o c i e t y , h e l d i n t h e gymnasium on t h e 5 t h , 6 t h and 7 t h M a y , was w e l l a t t e n d e d b y members o f I . C . and o t h e r o o l l e g e s . The s t a n d a r d was c o n the judge, Mr.C.O.Steinbook, s i d e r a b l y above t h a t o f l a s t y e a r ; A . R . P . S . , s t a t e d t h a t i t was a good d e a l h i g h e r t h a n he had expected f o r a C o l l e g e S o c i e t y . He r e m a r k e d t h a t , i n h i s o p i n i o n , some o f t h e p r i s e - w i n n i n g p r i n t s were o f t h e s t a n d a r d o f t h e major London e x h i b i t i o n s . The P i c t o r i a l s e C t i o n , t h e most n u m e r o u s , c o n t a i n e d many f i n e p r i n t s . B y c o m p a r i s o n , t h e T e c h n i c a l and R e c o r d , and P o r t r a i t u r e s e c t i o n s were almost p o o r . Many o f t h e o u t s t a n d i n g p r i n t s were b y D r . E . G l a i s t e r , who made a v e r y f i n e gesture i n returning h i s p r i i e s to the Society. • The r e s p o n s e i n b o t h t h e . c o l o u r t r a n s p a r e n c y and l a n t e r n s l i d e s e c t i o n s c a u g h t t h e Committee b y s u r p r i s e ; t h e a r r a n g e ments f o r e x h i b i t i n g t h e s e s e c t i o n s were i n a d e q u a t e b o t h as r e g a r d s t h e number o f e n t r i e s w h i c h o o u l d b e e x h i b i t e d , a n d t h e i r p r e s e n t a t i o n . The r e s p o n s e t o t h e " C o l l e g e A c t i v i t i e s " s e c t i o n was d i s a p p o i n t i n g . I n a l l , t h e E x h i b i t i o n was a s u c c e s s , a n d a l l t h e e x h i b i t o r s should be c o n g r a t u l a t e d . I t i s t o b e hoped t h a t t h e s t a n d a r d c a n b e m a i n t a i n e d i n t h e coming y e a r s .

A s u c c e s s f u l v e n t u r e i n t o a new f i e l d w a s made by t h e U . L . U . D e b a t e s C o m m i t t e e i n h o l d i n g a d e b a t e entirely in French. The p r i n c i p a l g u e s t s were f r o m P a r i s u n i v e r s i t y w i t h o t h e r p l a t f o r m speaicers from Reading U n i v e r s i t y and Richmond C o l l e g e , U . L . The p r e d o m i n a n t l y f e m a l e a u d i e n c e ( o f a b o u t 80) produced a s t a n d a r d o f s p e a k i n g at l e a s t as h i g h as t h a t n o r mally heard i n a U.L.U. debate i n E n g l i s h .

A s was o b s e r v e d by Tony P e a c o c k , more i n jest than i n earnest, the f a i r e r sex l a c k a l o g i c a l app r o a c h to matters of the mind and tend r a t h e r to a s s a u l t one's senses by an appeal t o the heart and t h e i n n a t e g o o d n e s s i n h e r e n t i n e v e r y male's breast. However, i t was most p l e a s a n t t o l i s t e n t o the seductive pleas of red-headed E l i z a b e t h Bruno as she p r o p o s e d the m o t i o n d e f t l y c o n c e a l e d amid q u o t a t i o n s and p i c t u r e s o f t h e b r a v e , whose life had been so e n r i c h e d by t h e i r e x p e r i e n c e s - and anyway o f c o u r s e e x p e r i e n c e i s v a l u a b l e - i t makes such nice people. I n r e p l y , M r . Peacock b a t t e r e d us w i t h M a r x i s t , a b s o l u t e I d e a l i s t - s o p h i s t and what have y o u v a l u e s -.- a l l f a r t o o n e a r t h e p o i n t a n d c o g e n t l y made f o r p l e a s a n t d e b a t e - b u t h i s m a i n d e f e n c e l a y i n a few e x a m p l e s o f e x p e r i e n c e b e i n g of no v a l u e . I t was a l l so much h a p p i e r when M o n i c a H u b e r , from up n o r t h , gave a n o n - s t o p , but v e r y hearable, r e c i t a t i o n o f a n e c d o t e s h a v i n g l i t t l e t o do w i t h the matter. G a l l a n t l y r i s i n g to the occasion i n h i s best pedantic p a r l i a m e n t a r y manner, B r i a n Wyatt launched a pooh-pooh campaign upon the l a d i e s p r e s e n t and the s u b j e c t o f d e b a t e . This was w e l l - r e c e i v e d by a l l p r e s e n t and warmly a p plauded . The c o n t r i b u t i o n s f r o m t h e f l o o r w e r e o f a v a r i e d n a t u r e , some a t t e m p t e d t o d e a l w i t h t h e s u b j e c t , u n t i l s e l b y Angus s a i d t h a t t h i s was h i s t h i r d d e b a t e o n v a l u e s , a n d i n one o f t h e previous o n e s he h a d r e a c h e d t h e c o n c l u s i o n t h a t a t h i n g i s of value i f i t enlarges experience. The subject b e i n g dead a l i v e l y J a c k - i n - t h e - b o x d i s c u s s i o n a r o s e as t o t h e b e s t way t o t r e a t hangovers. On t h i s m o t i o n t h e l a d l e s w e r e d e f e a t e d b y 2 2 t o 21f v o t e s , m a i n l y d u e t o t h e b l o c k v o t i n g of t h e " s o l i d s o u t h " o r .the members o f I . C . who had o n l y come f o r t h e e x p e r i e n c e t o b e gained. With the normal c o u r t e s i e s a buffet refreshment was p r o v i d e d . I . C . h o g g i n g i n one corner and B e d f o r d i n the o t h e r , w i t h a r a p i d i n t e r p l a y o f empty p l a t e s . T h i s soon broke up i n t o a dance where B e d f o r d showed t h a t much v a l u a b l e experience ( n o n - c h a r a c t e r b u i l d i n g ) was t o be gained.

P R O F I L E The l i g h t of day f i r s t i l l u m i n a t e d t h e s a t u r n i n e countenance of W a l t e r P. Goss on t h e e l e v e n t h day of June i n t h e y e a r 1927 i n t h e h i s t o r i c s e a p o r t and market town of Great Yarmouth; f r o m w h i c h he h a s o f t l m e s s t r a y e d t o v a r i o u s p a r t s of the w o r l d i n an e f f o r t t o overcome h i s N o r f o l k a c c e n t and i t s fishy smell. H i s e a r l y e d u c a t i o n was o b t a i n e d a t the G r e a t Y a r m o u t h Grammar S c h o o l w h i c h he l e f t i n 1 9 4 6 , when i t was f e l t t h a t n o t h i n g more c o u l d be achieved, to undertake h i s N a t i o n a l Service o b l i g a t i o n s i n the R . A . F . as a radar i n s t r u c t o r . On c o m p l e t i n g t h i s d u t y he came t o t h e R . C . S . i n o r d e r t o r e a d P h y s i c s . I n common w i t h many i l l u s t r i o u s f o r b e a r s who elected to serve t h e i r fellow students rather than the f i c k l e whims of e x a m i n e r s , W a l l y ' s academic career h a s been somewhat c h e q u e r e d a n d t h i s y e a r h a s f o u n d him engaged i n the m a n u f a c t u r e of a f t e r n o o n t e a and a h e x t r a m i l l i o n m a g n i f y i n g d o u b l e power gas m i c r o s c o p e somewhere i n t h e i n n e r r e c e s s e s of t h e Guilds. T u r n i n g now t o t h e e x t r a m u r a l ( o r o u t d o o r ) aspect o f h i 8 c a r e e r we f i n d t h a t a t a n e a r l y a g e h e w a s f o r c e d by i l l n e s s to r e f r a i n from any f o r m of violent exercise for several years, during which t i m e he f a m i l i a r i s e d h i m s e l f w i t h t h e r u l e s , a i m s a n d i d e a s o f many games a n d s p e n t h i s l e i s u r e time o r g a n i s i n g and not p a r t i c i p a t i n g . It is quite natural therefore, though unique, that Wally should r i s e i n C o l l e g e a t h l e t i c c i r c l e s from s e c r e t a r y of cricket the Soccer Club (1949-50) and o f f i c i a l u m p i r e , b y way o f s e c r e t a r y o f the A t h l e t i c C l u b s Committee (1950-51), t o b e t h i s y e a r ' s c h a i r m a n of" the A . C . C .
His associations are not however confined to college a f f a i r s , f o r i n U n i v e r s i t y c i r c l e s he i s w e l l known as a s o c c e r referee o f some s t a n d i n g a n d i n the l a s t three y e a r s has been s u c c e s s i v e l y P u b l i c ity. The more o b v i o u s f u n c t i o n s o f " P h o e n i x " a r e to please the reader, support the w r i t e r , r e f l e c t the thought and record the doings of I.C. Between the m i l l s t o n e s of the "Review" and the " L i b e r a l Outlook C r u s a d e " t h e l a s t two f u n c t i o n s a r e g r o u n d exceeding small. The f i r s t two f u n c t i o n s s o m e t i m e s seem i r r e c o n c i l a b l e , and i n any case no-one e v e r pleases everyone, except Jonathan Staggers. Formal gardens are maintained i n flower for the g r e a t e r part of the year, and the d e l i g h t f u l J a p a nese G a r d e n , w i t h i t s t i n y l a k e , s u r r o u n d e d by r h o d o d e n d r o n s , J a p a n e s e maples and bamboos, has s u f f e r e d only from the l o s s of the pagoda-like until s h e l t e r that used to provide a shady r e t r e a t i t s a g e made i t unsafe. The R a l l y was h e l d a t t h e Two B r e w e r s , N o r t h a w n e a r H a t f i e l d , o n S a t u r d a y , 4 t h May, The f i r s t t o a r r i v e was D a v i d A l l e n who was f o u n d p e e r i n g g l o o m i l y o u t o f t h e s a l o o n b a r from b e h i n d a p o r k l o a f s a n d w i c h . A l l t h e c o n t e s t a n t s a r r i v e d i n good t i m e , e x c e p t f o r one p e r s o n who o n e n q u i r i n g what pub h e h a d s t o p p e d a t was t o l d b y t h e h o o t i n g r a b b l e t h a t i t wa3 a b e e r p u b . A s u c c e s s f u l r e t r e a t was b e a t e n on f i n d i n g i t t o b e t h e Sun. " A w o r k i n g k n o w l e d g e o f m a p - r e a d i n g was e s s e n t i a l s i n c e a l l t h e p l a c e s were i d e n t i f i e d b y g r i d r e f e r e n c e s . On f i n d i n g t h e . p o s i t i o n , q u e s t i o n s a b o u t the d i s t r i c t had t o be a n s w e r e d , a n d a f t e r f i n d i n g a l l t h e references t h e two c o n t r o l s h a d t o b e r e a c h e d i n a s e t t i n e . The w i n n e r was h e w i t h t h e l o w e s t s c o r e , p o i n t s b e i n g g i v e n f o r l a t e a r r i v a l a t c o n t r o l s and f o r e v e r y s e c o n d s l o w e r than the fastest time i n the s p e c i a l t e s t s . A t one p o i n t i n t h e f i r s t s e c t i o n g r e a t a s s i s t a n c e was g i v e n b y two young l o v e l i e s who stood by the road w a i t i n g t o gij-e a l l t h e a n s w e r s . A t t h e f i r s t c o n t r o l t h e two t e s t s were: a standing s t a r t to roach a balanced-pole t o u c h i t and s t o p , t h e o t h e r a Le Mans s t a r t . F o r t h i s , d r i v e r s omly c o m p e t e d , r u n n i n g 25 y a r d s t o t h e i r o a r s , s t a r t i n g t h e m , and d r i v i n g them a n o t h e r . 25 jsards t o f i n i s h . The M . G . ' s made t h e f a s t e s t t i m e s i n t h i s . B o a n e r g e s came down a s a n o n ) s t a r t e r , h a v i n g made good speed f r o m S o u t h K e n s i n g t o n w i t h one s t o p t o a l l o w a t i g h t big-end to c o o l , a r r i v i n g j u s t a f t e r the l a s t c o m p e t i t o r h a d l e f t . U n f o r t u n a t e l y he p e r i s h e d i n t h e p o u r i n g r a i n a t t h e l a s t c o n t r o l w i t h a snapped v a l v e stem. D u r i n g t h e t e a , M i k e D a y , who o r g a n i s e d t h e R a l l y w o r k e d out t h e r e s u l t s , and a t t h e end p r e s e n t e d some v e r y l a v i s h p r i z e s . S Q U A S H F o r the Squash C l u o t h i s hag been p r i n c i p a l l y a season of c o n s o l i d a t i o n of the remarkable progress made t h e y e a r b e f o r e . The C o u r t s were c l e a n e d a n d t h e l i g h t s r a i s e d , and i f the tendency of the roof t o l e a k c o u l d be c u r e d ( a s i t must b e , t o preserve t h e now i r r e p l a c e a b l e m a p l e f l o o r s ) , t h e y w o u l d be among t h e b e s t i n L o n d o n ; t h e f i x t u r e l i s t was p r u n e d and added t o , and gave us a f u l l s e a s o n of e n j o y a b l e m a t c h e s i n w h i c h we b r o k e j u s t o v e r e v e n s ; a n d t h e n u m b e r o f m e m b e r s w a s a r e c o r d , w h i c h may b e l a t t r i b u t e d t o t h e i n c r e a s i n g p o p u l a r i t y o f t h e game, a k e e n and e n e r g e t i c Hon. T r e a s u r e r , and an improvement i n g e n e r a l s t a n d a r d s o f h o n e s t y - o n o n l y one o c c a s i o n was a c o u r t b o o k e d i n t h e name o f Albert H a l l , a n d t h i s s e e m e d s u c h a n a p p r o p r i a t e name f o r t h e p e r s o n c o n c e r n e d ( e x c e p t t h a t t h e H a l l h a s no large 'tash) t h a t i t would have been c h u r l i s h to cavil. One o f t h e m o s t e n c o u r a g i n g f e a t u r e s o f the s e a s o n was t h e s u c c e s s a n d k e e n n e s s o f t h e s e c o n d t e a m , f o r w h i c h t h e r e p r o v e d to t e s o m u c h t a l e n t t h a t t h e r e was s e l d o m much d i f f e r e n c e between the f i r s t and f i f t h p l a y e r s , and the l a d d e r a g a i n p r o v e d most v a l u a b l e i n s e l e c t i n g the team. I n t h e U . L . 3 - a - s i d e t o u r n a m e n t we w e r e b e a t e n i n t h e s e c o n d r o u n d by W e s t m i n s t e r H o s p i t a l , h a v i n g b e a t e n Wye C o l l e g e 2 - 1 i n t h e l s t r o u n d . There was no v e r y g o o d r e a s o n f o r t h i s d e f e a t , f o r a l l 3 p l a y e r s w e r e b e a t e n b y m e n whom t h e y c o u l d h a v e b e a t e n h a d t h e y b e e n o n f o r m , b u t t h a t i s t h e way i n s q u a s h , a n d i n a n y c a s e we s h o u l d n e x t h a v e m e t t h e v e r y s t r o n g S t . M a r y ' s H o s p i t a l team t h a t won t h e Cup. T h e W h i t e l e y C u p was won f o r t h e f i f t h t i m e i n s u c c e s s i o n b y J . K e n y o n , who r e t u r n e d t o t h e C l u b i n January. T h i r t y p l a y e r s e n t e r e d , o f whom f o u r were s e e d e d , b u t u n f o r t u n a t e l y the Mo. 2 s e e d , A . R. Waner, had to withdraw ( h a v i n g l e f t t h e College s o t h a t E . M. Hughes, seeded No. 4, r e a c h e d the final. The b e s t m a t c h was t h e s e m i - f i n a l between K e n y o n a n d M . D . M a r t i n , w h i c h K e n y o n won i n t h r e e C l o s e games l a s t i n g n e a r l y f i f t y m i n u t e s , i n w h i c h M a r t i n produced a prodigious e f f o r t . The f i n a l was p o o r by c o m p a r i s o n , H u g h e s s t a r t i n g v e r y b a d l y a n d l o s i n g t h e f i r s t two games c h e a p l y . He t h e n r a l l i e d a n d won t h e n e x t 9 - 7 , b u t t h e e f f o r t proved t o o m u c h , a n d K e n y o n w a s a b l e t o r o m p home i n t h e n e x t game t o w i n t h e C u p y e t again.
