The Gods s m i l e d a g a i n t h i s y e a r w i t h b r i l l i a n t s u n s h i n e t e m p e r e d t o t h e f e v e r e d b r o w by a s l i g h t b r e e z e as s i x happy l a u g h i n g b u s l o a d s of competitors o f f i c i a l s a n d s t a f f a r r i v e d a t H a r l i n g t o n t o be g r e e t e d by t h e g l a m o u r o u s l a d i e s o f I . D u r i n g t h e t e a i n t e r v a l , when t e a c o u l d be o b t a i n e d i f y o u waited l o n g enough, the F e n c i n g C l u b gave an e x h i b i t i o n of f o i l s and ep^e, while Ted B e l l , a n s w e r i n g t h e open i n v i t a t i o n showed j u s t how d i f f i c u l t i t a l l was. T h e W e t t f i e l d D e b a t e a n d D a n c e was c h i e f l y r e m arkable for i t s exclusiveness. A s m a l l number o f d i s i n t e r e s t e d a l u m n i debated the power of the p r e s s on F r i d a y the 1 6 t h of May, and f a r - r e a c h i n g decisions o f a s e d i t i o u s n a t u r e , were made. The s p e a k i n g was o f a q u i t e h i g h s t a n d a r d , p a r t i c u l a r l y f r o m t h e f l o o r , a n d a s m a l l bomb s h e l l i n the shape of Margaret H u t c h i n s o n ( W e s t f i e l d ) r o c k e d the platform for s e v e r a l minutes. L o u i s Cohen gave a c o n s i d e r e d and w e l l b a l a n c e d p i c t u r e of the case for t h e m o t i o n a n d was w e l l s u p p o r t e d by W e i l l B l a c k m o r e , who c o n t r i v e d t o t i e many k n o t s a n d y e t h a v e many l o o s e ends l y i n g around f o r the a u d i e n c e to n i b b l e . The o p p o s i t i o n was a l m o s t e x t r i c a t e d f r o m i t s i m p o s s i b l e p o s i t i o n b y some c o m p l i c a t e d a n d o b s c u r e a r g u m e n t f r o m Ruth w a i s h , but not q u i t e . I t was i n f a c t d e c i d e d t h a t t h e p r e s s d i d w i e l d more power t h a n t h e g o v e r n m e n t , a n a a f t e r celebrating t h i s h a p p y c o n c l u s i o n by a t t a c k i n g a n o p t i m i s t i c a r r a y o f c a k e s and c o f f e e , t h e e v e n i n g s e t t l e d down t o a subdued dance which had a l l the h a l l - m a r k s o f a r i t u a l . For the f i r s t time i n I.C. h i s t o r y an exact e q u i l i b r i u m was a c h i e v e d b e t w e e n m a l e s a n d f e m a l e s , which (and, was s u c c e s s f u l l y m a i n t a i n e d u n t i l 1 0 , 3 0 p . m . i t i s t h o u g h t may w e l l h a v e c o n t i n u e d a f t e r w a r d s i n other surroundings).

The c o l l e g e s o f London have m e r e l y been u s e d t o p r o v i d e s t u d e n t s w i t h the r i g h t l e t t e r s a f t e r t h e i r names t o e a r n l a r g e r s a l a ries. T h i s s t r a t a g e m has l o n g been d e t e c t e d by e m p l o y e r s o f even the most l i m i t e d acumen, and f a i l e d holders by t h e r e m a r k a b l y m e a g r e p i t t a n c e s o f f e r e d t o o f a mere degree. T h e a i m o f a U n i v e r s i t y s h o u l d be t o a l l o w t h e c u l t u r e i n s t i l l e d i n e a r l y l i f e to bear f r u i t . In t h i s London f a i l s m i s e r a b l y . It produces very few who a r e e d u c a t e d a n d n o t e c h n i c i a n s , o r m o r e g r a n d i loquently t e c h n o l o g i s t s , but thousands of intolerant and h a l f b a k e d creatures f i t f o r very l i t t l e at a l l . I t i s time and t h a t London c o l l e g e s d r o p p e d t h e sham f a c a d e p r e t e n s i o n s to b e i n g of a U n i v e r s i t y and presented the true colours of i n t e r e s t e d ambition and m u n i f i cent mercenary remuneration. . Cult u r e i s s u b t l y a c q u i r e d d u r i n g the e a r l y formative years of one's l i f e . F o r the most p a r t the p e o p l e , y o u a n d I , t h a t come t o t h i s C o l l e g e are i g n o r a n t o f much t h a t i s good and b e a u t i f u l i n t h i s .world, the humanities and a r t s . The s t a n d a r d o f technique was l o w , a s i t always i s on t h i s unnerving occasion.
