The P r e s i d e n t m a k e s a s p e e c h , up comes t h e h a r d y a n n u a l c o n c e r n i n g t h e p l u m b i n g o n t h e t o p f l o o r , w h i c h i s being looked into or sat on a c c o r d i n g t o the p o s i t i o n o f t h e P r e s i d e n t ' s drawing o f f i c e , and every-one congraulates e v e r y one e l s e . D u t y d o n e , t h e F i e l d C u p R a c e c a n be run. The F i e l d Cup was o r i g i n a l l y p r e s e n t e d t o t h e w i n n e r s o f an i n t e r d e p a r t m e n t a l b o a t r a c e on the S e r p e n t i n e , b u t due t o l a c K o f a p p r e c i a t i o n i n some q u a r t e r s , t h e c o u r s e i s f r o m t i m e t o m o d i f i e d . T h e e n i g m a t i c s m i l e s o f t h e G u i l d s m e n who k n e w w e r e r e w a r d e d - n o t o n l y by a b o a t r a c e b u t a c h a r i o t race as w e l l . Down w e n t t h e S p a n n e r a n d a l m o s t a t o n c e t h e C i v i l s , who h a d b e e n f u r t h e s t from the P r e s i d e n t i a l eye, had h o i s t e d t h e i r v e h i c l e a l o f t as they staggered to E x h i b i t i o n Road. B y a few m a s t e r f u l s t r o k e s o f a two by f o u r angle the c h a r i o t e e r dispensed w i t h the services o f a l l who w e r e n o t a c t i v e l y a s s i s t i n g h i m (some 200) . C l o s e l y h a u l e d by the E l e c t r i c a l s , the C i v i l s t o r e up t o t h e P a r i , w a i v e d on by a f f a b l e policemen , a n d r e a c h e d t h e b r i d g e o v e r t h e S e r p e n t i n e w i t h 20 y a r d s ' l e a d . O v e r the p a r a p e t went t h e f l a g a n d away s h o t t h e b o a t b e n e a t h , p r o p e l l e d by M c K e n n a a n d M c K e n n a , a b l y h i n d e r e d by t h e C i v i l s c a p t a i n at the r u d d e r end and a c h a r a c t e r w i t h a broom at the o t h e r . Due i n n o s m a l l m e a s u r e t o the f i s h i n g a c t i v i t e s of the C i v i l s , the E l e c t r i c a l s , who w e r e r o w i n g s t r o n g l y , b e g a n t o c r e e p u p , u n t i l a b o a t p r o p e l l e d by two C i v i l s a d m i r e r s who w e r e n o t l o o k i n g w h e r e t h e y w e r e g o i n g , c a u s e d a break In the rowing and a heated exchange of pretty compliments. By now t h e M e c h a n i c a l s h a d g i v e n t h e i r f l a g t o t h e d u l y g r a t e f u l G h e m i c a l s and one b r a v e , s p i r i t d e l i v e r e d h i s f l a g p e r s o n a l l y , w h e n he came up a f f c e r j u m p i n g o f f t h e b r i d g e . Running battles were fought as the r i v a l crews t r i e d , h a r d to o v e r take the leaders. T h e C i v i l s , some 5 l e n g t h s u p , w e r e m e t b y a merman who t r i e d h a r d i f u n s u c c e s s f u l l y t o make an i m p r e s s i o n upon the d i s c u s s i o n a s t o t h e b e s t means o f m a k i n g the shore w i t h d i g n i t y . The p e n n a n t was h u r l e d but f e l l s h o r t o f t h e b a n k . R i s i n g t o t h e o c c a s i o n , o r d i d he f a l l ? Newman p l u n g e d i n t o t h e w a t e r t o come d r i p p i n g t o t h e bank. B y now a l l t h e b o a t s h a d a r r i v e d a n d chaos r e i g n e d as r e v e n g e was taken. ENGINEERING PAPER PRIZE The L i n k s C l u b M e m o r i a l P r i z e f o r the b e s t s t u d e n t paper w r i t t e n f o r the ' G u i l d s E n g i n e e r ' h a s t h i s y e a r b e e n a w a r d e d t o M . W. ^ n i l l f o r his c o n t r i b u t i o n " M e t h a n e P r o d u c t i o n f r o m S e w a g e Slud<ÂŁ", The p r i z e was f i r s t awarded l a s t y e a r and has a value of three guineas. A t a n e a r l y age K e n n e t h P e r c y E l c r i d g e was s u b j e c t e d t o a c o m p l e t e change i n environment. From the more f a s h i o n a b l e o f N o r t h e r n L o n d o n ' s s u b u r b s he f o u n d h i m s e l f i n t h e w i d e open spaces of South A f r i c a , eventua l l y spending five formative years a t P a r Jet own H i g h S c h o o l , J o h a n n e s b u r g . E l d r i d g e h i m s e l f a d m i t s t h a t i f i t had n o t been f o r t h i s u p h e a v a l he w o u l d n o t now b e r e a d i n g e n g i n e e r i n g , n o r w o u l d he p l a y r u g b y f o o t b a l l . To imagine him as a n y t h i n g but an engineer, or rugger p l a y e r i s , i n d e e d , d i f f i c u l t , so to t h i s e x t e n t his l i f e has been i n f l u e n c e d . But i n a wider f i e l d it i s f e l t t h a t h i s present make-up has been greatly formed as a r e s u l t of t h i s e a r l y t r a v e l . That Ken is 'different' t h e r e i s no d o u b t . A l a c k of conservation i n h i s views, manner, and a p p e a r a n c e - f o r a l o n g t i m e h i s f a v o u r i t e suiti n g has been pea-green tweed - has l e d him to become a n odd t y p e o f p r a c t i c a l f r e e t h i n k e r . Classif i c a t i o n i s d i f f i c u l t i n h i s c a s e , f o r he c o m b i n e s a f r e s h , y o u t h f u l p e r s o n a l i t y , with an o c c a s i o n a l cultural sophistication. In f a c t , at times the b e s p e c t a c l e d s h o r t s i g h t e d n e s s , and p o u t i n g u p p e r l i p , suggests a tendency to s u p e r c i l i o u s n e s s . C o n t r a s t i n g these c h a r a c t e r i s t i c s are those of a more t h a n ' a v e r a g e s p o r t s m a n . In Imperial College p e r h a p s he i s b e s t known a s h o o k e r o f t h i s season's s u c c e s s f u l r u g g e r X V , w h e r e h e a l s o made b i n m a r k as a f a s t ' s p o i l e r ' , and f i r s t time t a c k i e r . Having gained h a l f - c o l o u r s for a t h l e t i c s i n h i s f i r s t y e a r , he h a s s i n c e b e e n a b l e t o w r i t e knowledgeable, i f somewhat f r i v o l o u s , r e p o r t s on ' S p o r t s D a y ' .

I c a n f i n d b u t two c o n c l u s i o n s :I He i s n e v e r i n a f i t s t a t e t o l i s t e n t o a n y r e c o r d s a f t e r s o j o u r n i n g i n the b a r on S a t u r d a y s . etc., 2. He h a s n e v e r h e a r d r e c o r d s b y L e s P a u l , t h e names b e i n g j u s t b a i * - t a l k t h a t he h a s o v e r h e a r d , . a n d a s a c o n s e q u e n c e he d o e s n ' t recognise t h e m w h e n we d o p l a y t h e m a t t h e h o p s . As the c h a r a c t e r of the student p o p u l a t i o n develops through s u c c e s s i v e y e a r s so do t h e needs o f t h e U n i o n and t h e q u a l i t i e s demanded o f a P r e s i d e n t , t h o u g h no two would agree as t o t h e exact combination o f q u a l i t i e s . Secondly t h e r e i s a very n o t i c a b l e reluctance on t h e p a r t o f men who have many, t h o u g h p e r h a p s n o t a l l , o f t h e q u a l i t i e s f o r t h e o f f i c e , t o p e r m i t t h e i r names b e i n g put forward. T h i s lack of enthusiasm for self-advancement s p r i n g s from f e a r s t h a t t h e a d d i t i o n a l d u t i e s ! w i l l p r o v e t o o heavy a b u r d e n . T h i s i s p a r t l y the. outcome o f t h e p r a c t i c e i n r e c e n t y e a r s o f p i l i n g o f f i c e upon o f f i c e - o r agony upon agony on t h e s h o u l d e r s o f t h e p r o m i n e n t . L a u who came t o t h e C o l l e g e i n O c t o b e r , 1 9 5 1 , and i m m e d i a t e l y s t e p p e d i n t o t h e shoes o f h i s b r o t h e r who was C a p t a i n e l e c t a t t h e t i m e b u t moved on t o N o t t i n g h a m U n i v e r s i t y . F . S . Lau", c o r s i m p l y L a u a s he i s g e n e r a l l y known, came h e r e from Southampton U n i v e r s i t y where h e t o o k a d e g r e e i n C i v i l E n g i n e e r i n g and founded t h e B a d m i n t o n C l u b . A p a r t from p l a y i n g B a d m i n t o n , L a u i s w o r k i n g f o r a n M . S c . i n S o i l M e c h a n i c s , and h e a l s o spends a l o t o f h i s time f l y i n g . He i s a member o f t h e U . L . A i r S q u a d r o n , and i n 1951 won a cup f o r i n s t r u m e n t f l y i n g . I n h i s f i r s t y e a r a t C o l l e g e he d i d a c e r t a i n amount o f c r o s s - c o u n t r y r u n n i n g , u n t i l one p a r t i c u l a r l y c o l d day l e d h i m t o t h e c o n c l u s i o n t h a t t h e E n g l i s h c l i m a t e was n o t s u i t e d t o t h a t p a r t i c u l a r mode o f i m p r o v i n g s t a m i n a . T h i s commenced w i t h a T r i o S o n a t a by B a c h , a r r a n g e d f o r two p i a n o s . T h i s was not altogether' s u c c e s s f u l e i t h e r i n the arrangement or the perform a n c e w h i c h t e n d e d t o be r a g g e d . The M a d r i g a l s t h a t f o l l o w e d were s u p e r b , and t o my m i n d t h e b e s t p a r t o f t h e p r o g r a m m e . The I . . C . C h o i r u n d e r D r . J a c q u e s w e r e b e y o n d my c r i ticism. I w i l l say no more. I d i d not l i k e the " R i o Grande". It is d i f f i c u l t to c r i t i c i s e a p i e c e t h a t has been g e n e r a l l y a c c e p t e d f o r y e a r s , ..but i t w a s t h e first t i m e I h a d h e a r d i t a n d i t Seemed l a c k i n g . The .performance, h o w e v e r , w a s n o t l a c k i n g i n any way and was e q u a l t o t h a t i n the m a d r i g a l s ; the p i a n o s o l o ( E . H . Brown) was p l a y e d w i t h great skill. I t i s s a i d t h a t C o n s t a n t Lambert was i n f l u e n c e d by j a z z i n t h i s c o m p o s i t i o n ; t h e r e were h i n t s i n the piano solo of t h i s i d i o m , but w h i l s t t o l e r a n t to both k i n d s , I t h i n k that i n C h o r a l M u s i c t h e two c a n n o t be r e c o n c i l e d . However, the job of a FELIX c r i t i c i s to c r i t i c i s e the performance ( m u s i c can be f a r b e t t e r d e a l t w i t h e l s e where) and I can o n l y r e p e a t t h a t t h i s was beyond criticism.
