Each year, on the Monday b e f o r e the t e r m opens the freshers are i n y i t e d to a free t e a : but before t h i s bribe i s handed out, they are herded i n t o t h e G y m . , p e s t e r e d o n t h e i r way b y the talent-scouts, a n d made t o s i t i n mute mass o n the floor, while the Master of Ceremonies, the tresident of Imperial College Union, introduces them to the d i s t i n g u i s h e d feathering on the stage. T h i s s c e n e may r e s e m b l e a c h a r i t y s c h o o l Speech Day, to those f r e s h and f a m i l i a r from s c h o o l ; and to those students coming here v i a the services the set-up and the encouraging speeenes of the Union o f f i c i a l s may r e m i n d t h e m o f t h e h o p e f u l w o r d s of the entertainments and education o f f i c e r s i n t h e i r old units. However, none s h o u l d worry t h a t t h i s one-sided s i t u a t i o n w i l l l a s t . The R e c t o r , the Secretary and the R e g i s t r a r of the College w i l l , regrettably, n e v e r a g a i n be s e e n d u r i n g t h e y e a r on t h i s platforji; with the Union officers; and i t w i l l be a n o b s e r v a n t s t u d e n t who s e e s t h e a i r a n d a r m y representatives of peace at a l l while at I.C. Only on t h i s o c c a s i o n does the P r e s i d e n t r e c e i v e a quiet audience, ana can t r e a t them p o l i t e l y : U n i o n m e e t i n g s d u r i n g t h e y e a r a r e much l e s s formal, often with the President, s u p p o r t e d by the Honorary Secretary of the Union, defending the a d m i n i s t r a t i o n a g a i n s t t h e mob, a n d h a p p i e s t when the Union C o u n c i l ' s and committees' work i s left i n peace. These two o f f i c e r s are the k i n f - p i n and p r i n c e - p i n of the most c o m p l i c a t e d s t u d e n t s ' union i n a London college. They are at the c e n t r e of a n o r g a n i z a t i o n c o m p r i s i n g , on one h a n d , the a f f a i r s of the three constituent colleges, of Guilds, the R . C . S . , and the Mines, on another, I . C . ' s a f f i l i a t i o n and r e s p o n s i b i l i t i e s i n the University Union; and a l l around these, the weaving connections of clubs and a f f a i r s of state at these three l e v e l s . The two o f f i c e r s need to be e x p e r t s i n f o u r d i r e c t i o n s , a n d u n b i a s e d t o w a r d a l l . T h e i r t w o p e r s o n a l i t i e s n e e d t o be as sanely different as p o s s i b l e .

A N D Ron M a c f i e , the President i s a q u i e t man. He s m o k e s a p i p e more t h a n he t a l k s , a n d h i s main i n t e r e s t at I.C. has been g l i d i n g . H i s home i s the Aeronautics Department, w h i c h was r e a c h e d after several pauses at Intermediate Level causing a stay w i t h the R.A.F. between times. Though t h i s should account for h i s r i s e since i n f l y i n g he became t h e f i r s t member o f the G l i d i n g Club to q u a l i f y as an i n s t r u c t o r - h i s main experience i n the service appears to have been i n d r i v i n g ou the Burma Road. This would account for h i s special line i n vacation work: the delivery of expensive cars, and being c h a u f f e u r to expensive passengers. He was C a p t a i n o f t h e I . C . G . C . f o r two years, u n t i l l a s t year, when the S o c i a l C l u b s C o m m i t t e e t o o k h i m f o r t h e i r new C h a i r m a n . From t h i s o f f i c e he was promoted President unopposed. Wally Goss, the Hon. Sec. i s , by c o n t r a s t , one o f those t i r e l e s s and harassed workers whose n e a r - f a n a t i c efficiency and thorough i n t e r p r e t a t i o n of t h e i r duties often tempts colleagues to s i t back and such energetic o n e s do a l l . let But 'Sally also possesses the saving grace of those with such capacity for responsib i l i t y : he enjoys l i f e , and s u f f e r s f o o l s as a l l must. He r o s e i n college a t h l e t i c c i r c l e s , f i r s t to Secretary of the Soccer Club, and as the o f f i c i a l cricket u m p i r e , t o become i n t o r n S e c r e t a r y a n d t h e n l a s t year's Chairman of the A t h l e t i c Clubs Committee. I n U n i v e r s i t y c i r c l e s he i s w e l l known as a soccer referee, and i n the l a s t three years has been an officer o f t h e U . L . S o c c e r C l u b , a n d was j o i n t o r g a n i z e r 6f t h e i r t o u r of Kenya a year ago. It i s r e c o r d e d t h a t h e , a n o n - p l a y i n g member, was t h e i r o n l y c a s u a l t y i n a game: he i n j u r e d h i s knee w hi le refereeing.

They were drawn i n t h e i r h e a t a g a i n s t the b e s t E n g l i s h crew i n t h e event, C h r i s t ' s C o l l e g e , C a m b r i d g e , who w e r e l a t e r t o h a v e the g r e a t misfortune t o c a t c h a " c r a b " i n the f i n a l when l e a d i n g b y 1* l e n g t h s and seeming c e r t a i n t o b r i n g the t r o p h y back t o t h i s country for the first time s i n c e 1946.

A f t e r the u s u a l hazards o f t r a v e l l i n g and the a d d i t i o n a l one o f t r a i l e r i n s t a b i l i t y , t h e c r e w and p i l o t ( L o m e Welch) a r r i v e d s a f e l y . The r o a d s , which were, of course, the concern o f the ground c r e w i n t h e i r r e t r i e v i n g w o r k , p r o v e d t o be quite good d e s p i t e s e v e r a l r a t h e r i n t i m i d a t i n g road s i g n s . Due l a r g e l y t o e x c e l l e n t r a d i o c o m m u n i c a t i o n o r o t h e r equipment which r e a l l y worked, the R r i t i s h crews were always f i r s t b a c k to base and were u s u a l l y s u n n i n g t h e m s e l v e s b y t h e swimming p o o l when t h e o t h e r t e a m s came c r a w l i n g b a c k t w e l v e h o u r s o r so later. brought T h e r e w e r e many p l e a s a n t i m p r e s s i o n s b a c k f r o m S p a i n b u t one w a r n i n g f r o m t h e h e a r t t o p r o s p e c t i v e t o u r i s t s - beware egg-and-bacon soup.

On W e d n e s d a y , 2 n d J u l y , g i v i n g away n e a r l y a s t o n e i n w e i g h t p e r man i n t o a h e a d w i n d , t h e I.C. crew rowed w e l l . A f t e r a good s t a r t , t h e r e was l i t t l e t o choose between the crews u n t i l the top o f t h e i s l a n d , when t h e w i n d made i t s e l f f e l t a n d C h r i s t ' s b e g a n t o go a h e a d . T h e B a r r i e r was r e a c h e d i n 2 m i n . 3 s e c . and a t F a w l e y (3 m i n . 3 0 s e c . ) Christ's w e r e n e a r l y two l e n g t h s a h e a d . I . C . however, never g o t r a t t t e d a n d r e d u c e d t h i s t o j u s t uril e r a l e n g t h a t the b e g i n n i n g o f the e n c l o s u r e s . Christ's, however, i n t h e i r f i n a l s p u r t i n c r e a s e d the distance to \\ lengths at the f i n i s h . C . B . C . During this time the crew r e c e i v e d u n s t i n t e d h o s p i t a l i t y from U . C . S .
