On one oocaasion, P a u l Cross (Chairman Of t h s G u i l d s engineering Sooiety) r e f e r r e d , i n a s l i g h t l y d e p r e c i a t i n g tone, t o the p r o v i n c i a l u n i v e r s i t i e s only t o be •met w i t h "Steady on o l d ohap. I'm a Merton man m y s e l f l " I t was discovered that a number o f t h e o f f i c i a l s , here, were ex-students o f Oxfoxa, U.C.L & K.C.L. The survey o f f a c t o r i e s u s u a l l y commenced w i t h a d i r e c t o r g i v i n g a b r i e f o u t l i n e o f the f a c t o r y products, war damage and trade p o s s i b i l i t i e s . T h i s would be followed by a tour o f the works, an e x c e l l e n t lunch, w i t h wines t o d e l i g h t the most c r i t i c a l p a l a t e , and a general get together whioh i n v o l v e d more d r i n k i n g and u s u a l l y ended i n both v i s i t o r s & hosts singing i n l i l t i n g , i f somewhat rauoous, v o i c e s . . SMOKING C O N C E R T .

. Imperia l C o l l e g e has i t * "Hops", a l l three c o n s t i t u e n t c o l l e g e s have t h e i r C a r n i v a l s and ths v a r i o u s s o c i e t i e s provide danoes f o r t h * work-weary student, but only t h * Royal College of Science has a Smoking Concert f o r the d e l i g h t of i t s members, who however i n the main do not seem t o appreciate the f a c t . The t h i r d annual oonoert wan h e l d on Monday March 15th and v/ap on the whole the best yet. Whether due t o bad adve r t i s i n g o r t o a general apathy on the port of the student body, tho attendance wa.i.fer l e s s than might have been, but as t h i s r e s u l t e d I n m o n f r e e beer (and o l d e r ) f o r those who d i d come, no complaints on t h i s account were voiced although the organisers may have been a l i t t l e d i s a p p o i nted. The proceedings s t a r t e d w i t h a s u r p r i s i n g l a c k of s p i r i t shown by R.CS. when o a l l e d upon t o e j e c t C.and 0. gate-orashers but t h i s was probably due t o t h e i r customary r e s t r a i n t backed by tho knowledge that having triumphed y i n the matter of the Spanner, they oould a f f o r d t o be l e n i e n t . A f t e r t h i s we were t r e a t e d t o a s e r i e s of songs and sketches, moot of the usual student standard and w i t h usual student leaning towards the bawdy expressed i n v a r i o u s ways. P a r t i c u l a r a t t e n t i o n may bo drawn t o the duet by "Jim and liobin" which was q u i t e the f i n e s t and most p o l i s h e d item i n the programme, the oxoollent duologue by the P.O. chemista and a l s o t h e i r s k i t on the Board o f Studios enlivened by a r t i s t i c photographs, and the very good impromptu performances by the P r e s i d e n t s of the Mines and the C. and 0. Th* organisers showed i n i t i a t i v e i n o m e r i n g the v a r i ous items, so that as tho p a r t y Bseame more n o i s y , t h e i r a t t e n t i o n was s t i l l h o l d to the stage. The c h i e f complai n t was on t h i s matter of n o l s e i one was f o r c e d e i t h e r t o a i t near the f r o n t away from the beer and hear a l l that was going on, o r t o stay at the tack and d r i n k so much that one no lunger oared. L a s t F r i d a y evening, the M o u n t a i n e e r i n g Club h e l d i t s Annual Dinner i n the Upper D i n i n g Hall. T h i r t y members, i n c l u d i n g 5 e x - p r e s i d e n t s and numerous b e a r d s , a t t e n d e d . The m a i n p r o c e e d i n g , h o w e v e r , t o o k p l a c e i n t h e U n i o n E n t r a n c e H a l l w h e r e members o f t h e C l u b c a r r i e d on t h e t r a d i t i o n o f t r a v e r s i n g t h e aforementioned H a l l . S e v e r a l a t t e m p t s were made and m o s t o f t h e " c l i m b e r s " s u c c e e d e d - a t the expense of a c o u p l e of n o t i c e boards, an e l e c t r i c l i g h t and some b e e r g l a s s e s .

M O T O R CLUB RALLY A d r i v e r , at the f i n i s h of the G u i l d s Motor C l u b s ' S p r i n g R a l l y , was h e a r d t o r e m a r k , " L u o k y t h e c l u b made us s i g n a n i n d e m n i t y a t t h e s t a r t ! " T h i s g i v e s some i n d i c a t i o n o f t h e a d v e n t u r e s t h a t b e f e l l t h o s e t a k i n g p a r t i n t h i s e v e n t on t h e l a s t S u n d a y o f t h e S p r i n g Term. The s t a r t was a t I . C . U n i o n and t h e f i r s t comp e t i t o r was away a t 2.00 p.m. An a v e r a g e s p e e d o f 27 m.p.h. was s t i p u l a t e d f o r m o s t o f t h e e n t r i e s a n d t h i s was c h e c k e d a t v a r i o u s p o i n t s o n t h e route. One o f t h e s e c h e c k p o i n t s was a f t e r a f o r d near Burnt M i l l . I t was n o t a b s o l u t e l y n e c e s s a r y t o go t h r o u g h t h e f o r d b u t o f t h e 54 competitors o n l y 12 e l e o t e d t o a v o i d i t . J o h n W h e a t c r o f t ( G u i l d s ) was one o f t h e f i r s t t o r e a c h t h e f o r d and t h e e n t r y o f h i s A u s t i n s i x t e e n i n t o t h e w a t e r was a s b e f i t t e d a c a r d r i v e n One b y t h e v i c e commodore o f I . C . s a i l i n g c l u b . w i t n e s s s a i d t h a t t h e bow wave p a s s e d o v e r t h e roof of h i s car: On a r r i v a l a t t h e o t h e r s i d e t h e e n g i n e c e a s e d and f r a n t i c d r y i n g o f v a r i o u s e n g i n e c o m p o n e n t s was n e c e s s a r y b e f o r e c o n t i n u i n g . A n o t h e r c o m p e t i t o r - J o h n B i d g o o d - had checkpoint. trouble of another sort at t h i s A f t e r h a v i n g h i s i n s t r u c t i o n s h e e t s i g n e d by t h e c o u r s e s t e w a r d , i t was c a r r i e d away by a g l a m o r ous y o u n g l a d y t o t h e w r o n g c a r and n e v e r s e e n again. The f i n a l c h e c k p o i n t was M a t c h i n g G r e e n , b u t b e f o r e s t a r t i n g on t h e r e t u r n j o u r n e y , comp e t i t o r s had t o f o l l o w a r o u t e c a r d i n r e v e r s e i n v o l v i n g the d e t e c t i o n of s e v e r a l places of l i q u i d refreshment. The r e t u r n t o L o n d o n i n v o l v e d v i s i t i n g v a r i o u s map r e f e r e n c e s a n d c o l l e c t i n g " t r e a s u r e " . One i t e m o f " t r e a s u r e " was a s l i t i n n e r t u b e . About a dozen c o m p e t i t o r s were apprehended " b o r r owing" o l d t r a c t o r t y r e s from a Massey H a r r i s depot. - •

I f you are a r e g u l a r hop-goer, you w i l l have n o t i c e d a band of s e l e c t persons always s i t t i n g on the edge of the P e r i o d i c a l l y , one of them gets up, c o l l e c t s a l l stage. t h e i r pots - a l l of them have pots, i n c i d e n t a l l y - goes downstairs and comes back w i t h .more refreshment. More often than not, t h i s refreshment-begetter i s Derek Power, a handsome bloke w i t h d e c e p t i v e l y innocent blue-green eyes and a soothing, mellow voice. Derek, or D i j as he i s commonly c a l l e d , i s a l s o t h i s year's Chairman of the Athl e t i c Clubs Committee. On coming t o I.C. i n 1950 he showed great s k i l l i n hockey and squash. A couple of years ago he was the mainstay of our hockey team together w i t h B r i a n Purslow. A FSLIX report i n e a r l y '52 says "....dour m i d f i e l d p l a y w i t h Power and Purslow t h r u s t f u l i n attack , and Purslow and Power dogged i n defence ....(J.G. Smith) w e l l suppl i e d the. ammunition f o r the Pnrslow-Power spearhead." The r e p o r t i s signed "D.J.P; B.W.P." He has r e c e n t l y been seen i n a h a l f - p u r p l e t i e , presumably acquired on tha I n squash U.L. hockey team's r i g h t wing t h i s season. Derek's name can be seen r e s t i n g comfortably at -she top o f the ladder throughout the season. A f t e r a s u c c e s s f u l season asHockey Captain, i t was not s u r p r i s i n g to see him as the Chairman of the A.C.C. H i s ' outstanding achievement i n that post must s u r e l y be the new scheme f o r teas at H a r l i n g t o n . For a l l the c r i t i cism i t has aroused, the tremendous o r g a n i s a t i o n t h a t went i n t o the scheme has d e f i n i t e l y p a i d o f f i n g r e a t e r numbers using the coaches and s t a y i n g on f o r teas at H a r l i n g t o n . Derek's other a c t i v i t i e s are too numerous t o d e t a i l . He was G u i l d s Vice-President l a s t year, can be seen at C a r n i v a l s i n a Spanish hat, was instrumental i n g e t t i n g Beaver from L.S.S. t h i s year, and dive d ( v o l u n t a r i l y ) i n the Serpentine i n the February rag. I t i s s u r p r i s i n g how h i s t h i r d - f l o o r colleagues l a the Old H o s t e l refuse, w i t h one voice, t o p r o f i l e him o r Derek's own i d e a of to d i v u l g e any damaging information. h i s P r o f i l e was a heading and a photograph at the top, h a l f a column of empty space and two words at the bottoms " I n t e r e s t s : women."

I t ana o f t e n been M i d t h a t I.C. i s too f a r from t h a c e n t r a o f London t o be as w a l l known as i t might. We, being members o f I.C., tend t o overlook the f a c t t h a t others have never even heard o f i t . London i s too l a r g e f o r anyone t o know every p a r t but one would have thought t h a t London Transport should kno* ua w a l l enough t o know t h a t we e x i s t i n South Kensington. Yat what do we f i n d on t h a s t r e e t maps adorning the w a l l a o- t h e Undargxound? G u i l d s and Mines are marked as the I m p e r i a l I n s t i t u t e , R.C.S i s i n d i c a t e d as p a r t o f the V i c t o r i a & A l b e r t Museum and the Science Vlusaum. Laasar placea i n The Strand and Sower S t r e e t are i n d i c a t e d . .Vhy not I.C.? There i s one obvious remedy - provide each member o f the union w i t h a l a r g e red p e n c i l but there must be a way t o r e c t i f y t h i s omission whioh would be more s a t i s f a c t o r y t o a l l concerned. Another caae f o r a c t i o n o f some sort o r another i s i n t h e matter o f preservin g ourselves i n our journeys up and down E x h i b i t i o n Road. Comparatively few o f us can l i v e i n the h o s t e l and many have t o r i s k c r o s s i n g Cromwell Road and Thurlpe P l a c e . Of l a t e , the tendency o f t r a f f i c t o swing i n t o these roads, from E x h i b i t i o n Road, without g i v i n g s i g n a l s o f any k i n d , has increased. There i s the a l t e r n a t i v e o f using the subway but no one should be f o r c e d t o burrow beneath t h e ground i n s t e a d o f enjoying the f r e s h (comparatively) a i r above. The roada around I.C. are wide enough f o r the t r a f f i c to t r a v e l reasonably quickly and s t i l l -ive us a cnance t o c r o s s the roads i n safety. Hence i t appears t h a t the so s o l u t i o n l i e s i n educating the m o t o r i s t s . There's scope f o r someone here'. 6

R E C O N S T R U C T I O N

I t i s now p o s s i b l e t o g i v e b r i e f det a i l s o f t h e proposed r e c o n s t r u c t i o n of t h e Jnion Buildings. The ground f l o o r w i l l r e m a i n s u b s t a n t i a l l y t h e same, but e x t r a cloakroom space w i l l be made a v a i l a b l e b,, removing t h e b a r t o a p o s i * t i o n now o c c u p i e d by t h e committee rooms and I.C.W.A. A new b u i l d i n g w i l l be e r e o t e d between t h e p r e s e n t u n i o n and t h e botany b u i l d i n g . A l a r g e committee room w i l l occupy t h e ground f l o o r of t h i s b u i l d i n g . The u p p e r d i n i n g h a l l w i l l r e m a i n u n a l t e r ed, b u t t h e r e w i l l be two rooms i n s t e a d o f t h e p r e s e n t gym. One w i l l be known a a a s t a f f common room, h u t w i l l be a v a i l a b l e f o r r e c e p t i o n s , e t c . . The p r e s e n t s t a f f common room w i l l be use d a s an e x t e n s i o n t o the k i t c h e n premises. Two new f l o o r s w i l l be added. The c o n c e r t h a l l w i l l b e on t h e E a s t s i d e o f the 2nd f l o o r , w i t h r a i s e d s t a g e , d r e s s i n g rooms and s t o r a g e space. The new gym w i l l be on the West s i d e w i t h rvhongHng rooms f o r men and women a t t h e extreme end. These w i l l be accomodated one above the other. S t a i r w a y s w i l l be p r o v i d e d a t b o t h ends o f t h e u n i o n i n a d d i t i o n t o t h e e x i s t i n g cent r a l staircase. T h i s l a t t e r w i l l r e a c h t h e 2nd f l o o r a n t h e S o u t h s i d e , and t h e d i v i d i n g w a l l w i l l be s u c h a s t o a l l o w t h e gym and c o n c e r t h a l l t o be made i n t o one l a r g e room. A n o t h e r r e f e c t o r y w i l l occupy the 3rd f l o o r above t h e new gym, and i t i s expected t h a t this w i l l offer cafeteria servioe. On t h e E a s t s i d e t h e r e w i l l be a games room and w r i t i n g room. So d e f i n i t e d a t e has been announced f o r commencing work, b u t i t i s e x p e c t e d t o s t a r t b e f o r e t h e end o f t h e t e r m . G R A N T S The working committee of the London area grants survey (on which S i c k Jaaaa, the Mines p r e s i d e n t , was representing I.C., i n the U n i v e r s i t y C o l l e g e s s e c t i o n ) decided t o apply f o r a hearing w i t h L.C.C. and suggested a date e a r l y i n May. Among the problems f o r d i s c u s s i o n , those p e c u l i a r t o U n i v e r s i t y C o l l e g e s were v a c a t i o n courses and t h a expenses incurred therein. T h i s move was the r e s u l t o f the questionnaires sent round s e v e r a l c o l l e g e s . At I.C. only 571 out o f about 1600 students completed questionnaires. T h i s made i t impossible t o break the i n f o r m a t i o n down i n t o courses, years, p a r e n t s ' income e t c . I t ' s funny how t h i n g s f i n d t h e i r way to the oddest o f p l a c e s . In the o l d l a b . the o t h e r day, I came a c r o s s an o l d wooden case, i t s top l o c k e d w i t h a huge wooden padlock but the hinges gone, so t h a t i t opened from t h e other s i d e i n s t e a d . I n s i d e was a mass o f o l d papers, some pinned t o g e t h e r , others j u s t f l o a t i n g about. They turned out t o be the Union T r e a s u r e r ' s r e c o r d s f o r about 1928-35. Too eager to f e e l g u i l t y , I began to browse. "Dear S i r " a l e t t e r r a n , "We herewith r e t u r n your cheque f o r £8, as the account has a l r e a d y been s e t t l e d by XXX. We hope you f i n d e v e r y t h i n g to be i n o r d e r . " A v e r y o p t i m i s t i c hope, i t turned out. The v e r y next l e t t e r was from the Amateur Fenc i n g Assn., m i l d l y but f i r m l y r e p r o v i n g i n tone. The season was w e l l advanced i t s a i d , but the I.C. F e n c i n g Club had not y e t p a i d i t s a f f i l i a t i o n f e e s . Would the Hon. Sec. i n q u e s t i o n take the necessar y steps. I can j u s t see the Hon T r e e s , reminding the Hon S e c , who would then approach the Hon. T r e a s . o f f i c i a l l y and request mm, as the person i n charge o f t h e cash, t o forward (the n e c e s s a r y f e e s on h i s ( t h e Hon. S e e ' s ) b e h a l f , n e c e s s a r y adjustments t o the Club's account w i t h the Union to be made i n due c o u r s e . T h i s i s known as working through the proper channels. The Morphy. Dinner i n '29 was h e l d on the 13th March. I t s b i l l came to s- 6*7 guests h/- head, O.7.8.0; wines and c i g a r s f o r guests £2.1.1; breakages £ 1 . 8 . 5 . A s a f i t t i n g c o n c l u s i o n t o one o f t h e i r b e s t - e v e r seasons, the Rugger C l u b were h o n o u r e d by an i n v i t a t i o n f r o m t h e U n i o n S p o r t i v e de V i l l e j u i f , near P a r i s , to take part i n t h e i r annual Easter s p o r t i n g f e s t i v a l . The o u t w a r d j o u r n e y was made i n h i g h s p i r i t s a n d t h e c r o s s i n g f a v o u r e d by a calm s e a and b r i g h t s u n s h i n e . Two m a t c h e s w e r e p l a y e d a g a i n s t V i l l e j u i f , a n d b o t h w e r e won, 19-6 and 18-5. The f i r s t m a t c h was p l a y e d b e f o r e a c r o w d o f a b o u t t h r e e t h o u s a n d on t h e p r i n c i p a l a f t e r n o o n o f t h e f e s t ival. The g r o u n d was b o n e h a r d , a n d w i t h a l i g h t b a l l t h e game was f a s t a n d o p e n . I.C. p r o d u o e d t h e i r v e r y b e s t f o r m and o p e n e d up a B e r i e s of b r i l l i a n t passing.movements i n whioh b o t h b a o k s and f o r w a r d s combined w i t h e q u a l s k i l l and z e s t . " f r o m the crowd. A r m s t r o n g , C o r b e t t and H y w e l l J o n e s w e r e a l w a y s up w i t h t h e p l a y a n d w e r e a l l r e w a r d ed by f i n e t r i e s . The F r e n c h t e a m w e r e g o o d i n d i v i d u a l l y but l a o k e d e f f e c t i v e combination. H o w e v e r , t h e y p l a y e d t h e game i n an e x c e l l e n t spirit. I n t h e s e c o n d game, I . e . a g a i n p l a y e d v e r y w e l l a f t e r t h e e a r l y shook o f b e i n g t h r e e p o i n t s down. B e f o r e the match, the c a p t a i n , D.Hykin, was p r e s e n t e d w i t h a l a r g e b o u q u e t b y t h e l o c a l M a y o r e s s , and r o s e n o b l y t o t h e o c c a s i o n w i t h the t r a d i t i o n a l c o n t i n e n t a l embrace. A l l the I . C . p a r t y p l a y e d i n one game a n d t e n o f t h e m played i n both. Attempts to hold conversations i n French varied astonishingly with different members o f t h e p a r t y . _ Uan F o w l e r i n d u l g e d i n some s p l e n did French, t i n g e d unashamedly w i t h h i s i n i m i t able accent. Coppelman.expected Frenchmen t o ' u n d e r s t a n d E n g l i s h , p r o v i d e d h e p u t e m p h a s i s on d i f f e r e n t s y l l a b l e s a n d was r i g h t e o u s l y i n d i g n a n t when t h e y d i d n o t . E l l i o t t was j u s t h o p e l e s s , and n e v e r got what he wanted. T h i s l o o k e d l i k e b e i n g an a b s u r d l y s o b e r t o u r , a p a r t f r o m a s h o r t c o n t e s t betwee n McCann a n d A r m s t r o n g o n t h e one h a n d , a n d ' V i n b l a n c ' on t h e o t h e r . The l a t t e r won by a d m i n i s t e r i n g a knock-out to both c h a l l e n g e r s . However, the l o s t t i m e was made g o o d b y some members o f t h e p a r t y by t h e s i m p l e expedient of not going to bed a t a l l on t h e l a s t n i g h t , s p e n d i n g i t i n s t e a d i n t h e company o f one ' C h a r l i e ' i n h i s B a r i n M o n t p a r n a s s e , and i n the n i g h t - c l u b n e x t door. We e s c a p e d f r o m t h i s w i t h o u t l o s s o f l i f e and were a b l e t o c o u n t e n a n c e t h e i n v i g o r a t i n g r e t u r n c r o s s i n g c o n f i d e n t t h a t we c o u l d r e l a p s e i n t o u n c o n s c i o u s n e s s a t a moment's notice. The o n l y r e g r e t s are those o f the c a p t a i n who r a s h l y promised to buy a round of beer i f the side won a l l i t s games, and d e s p i t e h i s e f f o r t s t h i s was achieved;
