The r e s u l t i n g b a t t l e r a g e d f a s t a n d f u r i o u s ; some o f the c o n t e s t a n t s t o o k an I n v o l u n t a r y b a t h , and o u t s t a n d i n g was t h e n o t o r i o u s miner,B-11 H - d s - n , w i t h h i s f l a m i n g r e d h i r s u t e g r o w t h , who d l s t i n -guished(and nearly extinguished) himself.

T o w a r d s t h e c l o s e o f t h e engagement when many M i n e r s h a d d e c i d e d t o r e t i r e , a scrummage o f Guildsmen were l e f t f i g h t i n g each o t h e r l A r m i s t i c e p r o c e e d i n g s were conducted i n a f r i e n d l y spirit, and b o t h s i d e s s a n g c o m p l i m e n t s t o e a c h o t h e r i n pleasant fashion.

T h a t was t h e f i n a l e t o t h e m a j o r r a g g i n g o f t h a the d a y . The P r e s i d e n t s warned t h e i r f l o c k s t h a t c o n s t a b u l a r y d i s a p p r o v e d o f a b n o r m a l t r a v e l by t u b e and t h r e a t e n e d t o t a k e a c t i o n i n t h e e v e n t o f a r o w d y r e t u r n J o u r n e y . He w a s c o m m i s s i o n e d i n R.E.M.E. a n d p o s t e d t o f o r e i g n p a r t s - H o n i t o n , Devon, d u r i n g t h i s e x i l e he t u r n e d r e c r u i t s i n t o s o l d i e r s i n t h e s p a c e o f s i x .weeks.

H i s e n t r y i n t o t h e M i n e s was q u i e t .

He s t i l l d i s t i n g u i s h e s h i m s e l f a s b e i n g a M i n e r whose b e s t t i m e f o r t h e Y a r d ' i s n o t l e s s t h a n 25 s e e s .

He hopes w i t h p r a c t i s e t o improve on t h i s .

As a F r e s h m a n h e p l a y e d f o o t b a l l f o r t h e R.S.M. b u t l a t e r f u l f i l l e d a childhood desire t o play with w a t e r when h e j o i n e d t h e B o a t C l u b .

Last year h e won o u r a d m i r a t i o n b y r o w i n g i n t h e M o r p h y o r e w a f t e r o n l y a month's e x p e r i e n c e and l a t e r s t r o k i n g a n e i g h t w h i c h became known a s t h e " F l y i n g F i f t h " renowned f o r i t s r a o i n g a b i l i t y and h i g h r a t e o f striking.

T h i s summer h e v e n t u r e d a b r o a d t o m i n e a n d p r o s p e c t x n Canada.

He now t a l k s l o q u a c i o u s l y o f h i s experiences and hopes t o r e t u r n .

E v e n a s n i g h t f o l l o w s d a y men f o l l o w M o n r o e , so, on Morphy Day, does t h e Boat Club Dinner, f o l l o w the r a c i n g , On N o v e m b e r 1 0 t h , t h e r e f o r e , t h e members and t h e i r guests gathered i nthe Upper Dining H a l l t o eat, d r i n k and t a l k o f rowing.

This year i t i s pleasant t o record that t h e a c t u a l f o o d was c o n c i d e r a b l y b e t t e r t h a n on c e r t a i n p r e v i o u s o c o a s i o n s which added g r e a t l y t o t h e enjoyment o f t h e e v e n i n g .

Throughout t h e proceedings t h ebeer flowed f r e e l y , i f n o t f r e e , b e i n g b r o u g h t up f r o m t h e b a r by a s t e a d y f e r r y s e r v i c e , w h i c h grew s l i g h t l y l e s s s t e a d y a s t h e e v e n i n g wore o n .

There was, however, a • s u s p i c i o n t h a t c e r t a i n members o f t h e company h a d b e e n c o n s u m i n g b e e r , a n d e v e n Merrydown,' b e f o r e the dinner i t s e l f s t a r t e d .

But, i f t h e o c c a s i o n a l t a b l e mat d i d c u r v e g r a c e f u l l y t h r o u g h t h e a i r s u c h phenomena have b e e n o b s e r v e d o n c o n s i d e r a b l y more formal occasions. ..

The s p e e c h e s w e r e g o o d , t h o u g h p e r h a p s n o t a b l e f o r t h e f a c t t h a t they contained only three stones, one o f w h i c h i s r e p e a t a b l e i n ( a l m o s t ) a n y c o m p a n y , a n d i t i s ' p r o b a b l y some t i m e s i n c e t h e B o a t C l u b w e r e l a s t c o l l e c t i v e l y r e f e r r e d t o a s "my d e a r s " .

A f t e r t h e d i n n e r t h e company r e t i r e d b y t h e conventional stages t o thebar, the entrance h a l l , the t e n n i s c o u r t s a n d t h e h o s t e l , where t h e e v e n i n g drew more o r l e s s p e a c e f u l l y t o a c l o s e .

Tony Cox was educated a t Berkhamsted School.
