Of t w e l v e b a r r e g u l a r s questioned, e i g h t had not n o t i c e d any d i f f e r e n c e , t h r e e thought i t s l i g h t l y b e t t e r than u s u a l , the o t h e r thought i t t a s t e d l i k e acorns (he l a t e r admitted T h i s brew he had n e v e r eaten a c o r n s ) . w i l l b e g i v e n a more p r o l o n g e d t r i a l n e x t week, 30 c a l l i n and see what yom t h i n k of i t . About two weeks ago, a prominent memb e r o f S i l w o o d P a r k Union(composed off I.C. r e s i d e n t s a t S i l w o o d ) , r e l i e v e d Cambridge U n i v e r s i t y A g r i c u l t u r a l C p l l e g e of a 6 f t . s t u f f e d camel. T h i s camel i s b e i n g c h r i s tened "Nasser" on Feb. 15th. About the same time, some mining g e o l o g i s t s on a weekend f i e l d course e r e c t e d a l a v a t o r y c i s t e r n on the top o f a pole by the s i d e o f the r e f e c t o r y . Mines' c o l o u r s were p a i n t e d on v a r i o u s o b j e c t s whioh had p r e v i o u s l y been adorned b y those o f C.&G. A l e t t e r complaining about t h i 3 was l a t e r sent t o the P r o f e s s o r o f the Department, but t h i s was r e c e i v e d i n t r u e I.C. f a s h ion: no a c t i o n was taken. Another i n c i d e n t occurre d a week l a t er, when these f a r - f l u n g members of I.e., the S i l w o o d r e s i d e n t s , having t i r e d o f pranks w i t h R o y a l Holloway C o l l e g e , c h a l lenged Bedford C o l l e g e t o a Tiddleywinks Match. An o u t s t a n d i n g v i c t o r y was r e c o r d ed. Telephones. I f you r i n g K M 2132 you get KEN 2963. I f you p i o k up the r e c e i v e r of KEN 2132 you hear no d i a l l i n g tone ( a l t h o u g h t h i s i s a c o i n c a l l box.) I f you p i c k up the r e c e i v e r of KEN 2963 you hear a d i a l i n g tone (although t h i s i s f o r incoming c a l l s o n l y ) . But i f you d i a l a number youdon't get i t . The G.P.O. (Post Master General H a r p i e s ) has been informed. Badminton.

The Gym i s t o o short 2.) f o r Badminton , and w h i l e the Conoert H a l l i s l o n g enougn, i t i s not h i g h enough. F i n a n c i a l l y t h i s means a grant f o r the Badmington fans t o h i r e e x t e r n a l c o u r t s . 3.) Stage. Stage f r o n t was found not t o conform w i t h L.C.C. f i r e r e g u l a t i o n s . C o n s i d e r a b l e l a s t - m i n u t e a l t e r a t i o n s were required. 4-) Curtains. The C u r t a i n t r a c k s i n the Lounge were hung! i n the wrong p l a c e . Hence the shabby-looking pelmets of some of them. These w i l l be a l t e r e d i n due course. An o r f i c a l day of r e j o i c i n g may be ordered i f t h i s work i s completed i n the present Session. 5. ) Main Door. The screen t o the main doorway was found not t o conform w i t h L.C.C. f i r e regulations. T h i s might e x p l a i n the l o n g delay i n i t s completion. 6. ) R a d i a t o r s . The r a d i a t o r s i n the porch \of the main doorway t o the juad were found not t o work. ( I n any case they only seem t o heat the main quadrangle.) T h i s may i n v o l v e knocking a h o l e i n the west w a l l of the S e n i o r Common Room. 7. ) P r e s i d e n t ' s C h a i r . A keen-eyed r e p o r t e r notes t h a t the c r e s t on the P r e s i d e n t s c h a i r has been stamped i n c o r r e c t l y . I t i s u n l i k e l y that t h i s w i l l ever be c o r r e c t e d .

11.) Magazines. There i s a tendency f o r paper magazines t o get disembowled i n t h e i r journey from the s t u p i d t a b l e p r o v i d e d , t o the f l o o r , and back again t o the t a b l e . A l s o sometimes i t i s , v i r t u a l l y impossible t o o b t a i n a p a r t i c u l a r magazine,eg. What's On, f o r one's p e r u s a l . I f t h i s i s due t o "borrowing" by persons unknown, we f i n d i t impossi b l e t o express our contemnt i n p r i n t a b l e language.

12.) Miscellaneous. The d e s i g n e r of the pavement o u t s i d e the lounge has o b v i o u s l y never had p r a c t i c a l experience i n n e g o t i a t i n g s m a l l but unexpected d i f ference3 i n l e v e l s a f t e r i m b i b i n g q u a n t i t i e s of a l e . Readers are reminded t h a t a t the Union M e e t i n g on October 23rd. 1956, i t was u n a n i m o u s l y a g r e e d t h a t u s e r s of the Union B u i l d i n g should leave t h e i r h a t s and c o a t s I n t h e c l o a k r o o m b e f o r e e n t e r i n g o t h e r rooms. I t w o u l d h e l p e v e r y o n e I f you w o u l d comply with this resolution. Incidentally It i s hoped t o i n c r e a s e the c a p a c i t y o f the c l o a k r o o m w i t h p o r t a b l e r a c k s on the l e f t o f the cloakroom e n t r a n c e once the contrac t o r s have f i n i s h e d there. O b v i o u s l y t h i s r u l e need not be f o l l o w e d r i g i d l y b y p e o p l e j u s t popping I n t o look a t the l e t t e r - r a c k o r at a n o t i c e b o a r d - I t ' s a m a t t e r o f u s i n g y o u r own d i s c r e t i o n . Dear S i r , Last Friday at p.m., I observed i n A y r t a i not l e s s than two c a r d games i n progress ( i n c i d e n t a l l y t a k i n g up two i n v a l u a b l e t a b l e s ) and s i x people r e a d i n g newspapers, which were spread a l l over the t a b l e . I have been v e r y i n t e r e s t e d i n the f o r m a t i o n of a c i n e - s o c i e t y , w i t h the main o b j e c t of making newsreels c f C o l l e g e l i f e ; we now have p l e n t y of support, but no money, w i t h , I am t o l d , v e r y l i t t l e l i k e l i h o o d of g e t t i n g any. I t seems a shame t h a t a p i c t o r i a l r e c o r d of the r e c o n s t r u c t i o n of I;C. union cannot be preserved i n the Union a r chives. V I E W P O I N T Most p e o p l e have s t r o n g f e e l i n g s a b o u t t h e New U n i o n , a l t h o u g h many d o n o t e x p r e s s t h e i r o p i n i o n t h r o u g h F E L I X . I n v i e w 6f t h i s we a r e p u b l i s h i n g t w i c e a s many v i e w points as normal. I n these t r o u b l e d times of expansion, t h e r e are i n e v i t a b l e f r u s t r a t i o n s and .dis-' appointments and one tends t o take slow progress f o r granted. I n these circumstances i t i s perhaps not s u r p r i s i n g t h a t there should be a c e r t a i n amount o f apathy among students as a whole. However i t i s c l e a r l y o f paramount importance t h a t the student body s h o u l d v o i c e i t s o p i n i o n s , even on on minor m a t t e r s , so t h a t the p a t t e r n o f C o l l e g e l i f e w i l l develop f o r the b e n e f i t of f u t u r e students as the C o l l e g e grows. I t i s rather disturbing, therefore, to note t h a t a r e c e n t memorandum r e q u e s t s t h a t a l l p r e s s e n q u i r i e s on 'general C o l l e g e m a t t e r s ' s h o u l d be r e f e r r e d t o an Administ r a t i o n department which w i l l be made r e s ponsible f o r o f f i c i a l press releases. Whilst i t i s undesirable that a national mountain s h o u l d be made out o f a p a r o c h i a l m o l e h i l l , i t i s u n t h i n k a b l e t h a t anyone s h o u l d f e e l bound t o s i l e n c e on a matter a f f e c t i n g student w e l f a r e . Hot t h a t I am a d v o c a t i n g a p r e s s camp a i g n f o r more h o s t e l s and r e f e c t o r i e s — p e r i s h the thought. But i t i s t h i s s o r t of d i r e c t i v e which makes people t h i n k t w i c e about opening t h e i r mouths, thus i n c r e a s i n g apparent i n d i f f e r e n c e and, p o s s i b l y even g i v i n g those i n charge the i d e a t h a t a l l i s - w e l l when, i n f a c t , i t might not be. There have been f o r example, many m u t t e r i n g s about v a r i o u s rooms i n the new Union, but has a n y t h i n g been specifi c a l l y stated We must be c a r e f u l t o d i s t i n g u i s h b e t ween g e n e r a l o o l l e g e matters and Union matters. I say t h a t a n y t h i n g d i r e c t l y a f f e c t i n g us as s t u d e n t s i s p r i m a r i l y t h e concern o f the Union, and i t i s up t o a l l of us t o h e l p the Union o f f i c a l s i n t h e i r job and t o l e t them know when t h i n g s are not as they might be. Otherwise our r e p r e s e n t a t i v e s w i l l l o s e i n t e r e s t and the Union might j u s t as w e l l become another department o f the A d m i n i s t r a t i o n , not r e f l e c t i n g student thought a t a l l . Union Meetings, the Union O f f i o e and l e t t e r racks are a l l convenient avenues o f approach and remember t h a t i t i s the weight of o p i n i o n which gets t h i n g s changed - so don't l e a v e i t t o the o t h e r man. I t i s o f course too l a t e t o p r o t e s t a g a i n s t the use o f b u i l d i n g i d e a s of the e a r l y t w e n t i e s whioh has r e s u l t e d , among o t h e r d e f e c t s , i n a s e r i o u s l a c k of d a y l i g h t , e s p e c i a l l y i n the ground f l o o r rooms. T u r n i n g now t o the i n t e r i o r d e c o r a t i o n , the treatment of the lounge can o n l y be e x p l a i n e d i f i t i s assumed t h a t i t i s the work o f an e n t i r e amateur. How e l s e can one e x p l a i n the o v e r a l l feminine e f f e c t , w i t h the s t r o n g s u g g e s t i o n of a h o s p i t a l w a i t i n g room S u r e l y no q u a l i f i e d i n t e r i o r deco r a t o r , knowing t h a t t h i s room would be a meeting ground and a p l a c e o f r e l a x a t i o n f a r a mostly male s o c i e t y , c o u l d have chosen those f r i l l y lower c l a s s o v e r - b r i g h t l i g h t s those h y g i e n i c a l l y s t a r k gleaming w h i t e w a l l s , t h a t ponderous showcase and those uncomfortable and parsimonious c h a i r s .
