IC UNION SAYS 'YES' TO EEC A T A poorly attended meeting last Thursday IC Union overshelmingly voted in favour of Britain remaining in the Common Market. The debate was, on the whole,characterised by a distinct lack of knowledge about the issues involved'.
IC R A G OR NOT? AFTER AN extremely s u c c e s s f u l year c o l l e c t i n g a m a s s i v e £8,500 for c h a r i t y , t h e IC R a g Committee has decided that it w a n t s a new n a m e . One s u g g e s t i o n put forward was that of LIMP ("London, I m p e r i a l ) Rag, w i t h a c r u t c h a s i t s s y m b o l , but s i n c e t h i s might c a u s e offence to c e r t a i n c h a r i t i e s , the R a g c o m m i t t e e decided against i t . Now, a competition has b e e n i n i t i a t e d for the purpose of f i n d i n g a n e w n a m e . T h e p r i z e i s to be a b o t t l e of w h i s k y a n d a l l s u g g e s t i o n s for the new name s h o u l d be s e n t t o : R a g , I C U n i o n O f f i c e , o n or before W e d n e s d a y 2 8 t h M a y . All suggestions will be welcomed.
The main motion was i n t r o d u c e d by T e r e n c e P y e . T h i s w a s immediately followed by a ' d e l e t e a l l a n d i n s e r t ' amendment b y I C U P r e s i d e n t Trevor P h i l l i p s . He spoke at l e n g t h o n the u n d e m o c r a t i c nature of the C o m m o n M a r k e t i n s t i t u t i o n s , a n d a s s e r t e d that the powers of d e c i s i o n m a k i n g w o u l d be removed from the elected representatives a n d p l a c e d i n the hands of the Brussels bureaucracy. This w a s f o l l o w e d b y s p e e c h e s for a n d a g a i n s t the amendment, with the main speeches a g a i n s t ' c o n c e n t r a t i n g on the theme that "we are already in Europe and we would lose far more if we got Out than stayed in." T h e speeches against were s i m i l a r t o T r e v P h i l l i p s ' p r o p o s a l s p e e c h e x c e p t that more d e t a i l s w e r e a d d e d t o b a c k up the arguments that h a d already been stated. He w e n t on to defend B r i t a i n ' s and concluded membership that w e a re better off s t a y i n g i n . Trev P h i l l i p s i n summing up a c c u s e d J o h n M o r t i m e r of u s i n g " cheap debating points." T h e amendment w a s then p u t to the H o u s e a n d d e f e a t e d . A s e c o n d amendment w a s then p r e s e n t e d w h i c h s t a t e d that I C U s h o u l d not take a d e f i n i t e s t a n d on the i s s u e , and that e a c h s t u d e n t s h o u l d not take a d e f i n i t e s t a n d o n the i s s u e , a n d that each to student s h o u l d be l e f t h i m s e l f (or h e r s e l f ) t o d e c i d e which w a y to v o t e . T h i s amendment w a s a l s o d e f e a t e d w h e r e u p o n the debate on the substantive was resumed. Then were further s p e e c h e s on the m o t i o n w i t h the most n o t a b l e one c o m i n g from the P G A f f a i r s Officer, T o m Abraham in which he broke w i t h h i s l e f t - w i n g c o l l e a g u e s by c o m i n g out i n favour of E E C m e m b e r s h i p . Countering these arguments Mr Phillips described Mr Abraham's p o i n t s a s "Trotslcyist tripe". T h e motion was then v o t e d upon i n p a r t s , the section dealing with the p u b l i c i s i n g of I C U ' s p o s i t i o n Street (by w r i t i n g to F l e e t etc) being taken papers s e p a r a t e l y . B o t h parts were p a s s e d . A p l e a that s u c h a small meeting s h o u l d not mandate i t s o f f i c e r s t o p u b l i c i s e the o p i n i o n s e x p r e s s e d i n the m o t i o n of b e i n g those o f I C U was ignored.

Michael Williams P E O P L E H A V E ASKED ME: "Why are you producing two four-page F E L I C E S per week as opposed to, say, one eight-pager per week?" There are two main reasons for doing this. F i r s t l y , F E L I X has never been produced twice a week, so in some respects the two-a-week program can be considered as an experimental pilot scheme just to see if it can be done single-handed by one person. The answer at the moment appears to be ' y e s it can be done'. Secondly, it can be stated categorically that with all the F E L I X staff now studying furiously for exams (they hurt not only the students who are studying for them) it would be physically impossible for me to single-handedly produce an eight (or more) page F E L I X simply because of process of finishing called 'collation'. T h i s is where one puts one sheet of F E L I X into another to produce the finished article. It would take me in excess of six hours solid to fold, collate, count and stack the 2,200 copies of F E L I X which are produced'. Sabbatical I may be,Superman I am not'. "What are you going to do after your year as E d i t o r ? " It is strange the number of people who believe that my year as Editor is being used as a stepping-stone into the metastable world of journalism. Nothing could be further from the truth. In September I shall be here at IC commencing studies leading to a PhD in one of the specialised areas of polymer chemistry. I hope this satisfies everyone's semi- morbid curiosity. FELIX. F o l l o w i n g an a n t i - E u r o p e a n speech at B r i s t o l U n i v e r s i t y , he c a l l e d for a s h o w of hands on whe the r or not B r i ta i n s h o u l d r e m a i n i n the E E C . A s at I C , the vote w a s m a s s i v e l y i n f a v o u r o f o u r c o n t i n u e d memb e r s h i p , s h o w i n g that, w h a t e v e r ridiculour arguments such anti-marketeers bring up, c o m m o n s e n a c ( w h i c h the L e f t i Like t o c a l l ' i g n o r a n c e ' ) c a n p r e v a i l . Mr B e n n ' s r e p l y w a s , " 7 think that shows something of the social origins of university students ." P e r s o n a l l y I have s e v e r a l reasons for o p p o s i n g the e x t r e m e s of r i g h t and left o n the E E C i s s u e . F i r s t a n d foremost c o m e s m y future j o b security, which w i l l depend;

We hope t o f o l l o w t h i s w i t h a n important d e b a t e o n t h e s t a t u s of P G ' s — w h e t h e r w e s h o u l d be treated a s r e s e a r c h w o r k e r s and be p a i d a r e a s o n able wage orwhetherwe should remain a s s t u d e n t s . There are a d v a n t a g e s and d i s a d v a n t a g e s in both but on b a l a n c e I f e e l that b e i n g c l a s s e d a s ' r e s e a r c h w o r k e r s ' w o u l d be better. T h i s i s , and I w o u l d l i k e t o s t r e s s t h i s p o i n t , part of a n a t i o n a l d e b a t e g o i n g o n among p o s t graduates and college a u t h o r i t i e s about P G r e s e a r c h work. A s a n example, Leeds University Senate have proposed a model whereby postgraduates would be employed as'research assistants' and given s i x

There is also an important motion to be introduced by Richard Upton dealing with the relationship between the PG group and College as well as with the Union. At the moment our powers are not clearly defined. I feel that ICPGG should demand complete policy-making control over PG affairs and ask that ICU and the College recognise our new role.

found that one d i c t i o n a r y d e f i n e s clique a s an a s s o c i a t e d number of p e r s o n s or an e x c l u s i v e s e t . T h e second meaning is nearer that u s u a l l y meant at I C . T h i s i s that it i s a s m a l l number of s t u d e n t s w h o w i s h t o e x c l u d e a n y other s t u d e n t s they do not want w i t h them, l a m informed by the Warden of H a m l e t G a r d e n s that t h o s e s t u d e n t s in the f l a t s d u r i n g the s e s s i o n 73/74 a n d w h o w i s h e d to r e m a i n for s e s s i o n 74/75 w e r e a b l e to remain i n the f l a t s . T h i s i s a d r o p in t h e s t a n d a r d of s e r v i c e f o r s o m e s t u d e n t s that is not t o be t o l e r a t e d .

REVIEW FILM Tommy (Director Ken Russell) IN T H E f i l m v e r s i o n of P e t e T o w n s h e n d and t h e W h o ' s R o c k O p e r a "Tommy", K e n R u s s e l l ' s s t r o n g , w e i r d i mages r e a c t n e g a t i v e l y , for the most part, w i t h the m u s i c . O n l y in one o r two s c e n e s d i d what w a s h a p p e n i n g on the s c r e e n a d d t o the power of the s e c o n d t r a c k . Many of R u s s e l l ' s images w e r e c l e v e r and h a d s o m e t h i n g to s a y , many w e r e not and had n o t , a n d almost without e x c e p t i o n t h e y a l l f a i l e d to f i n d s u f f i c i e n t r e l e v a n c e to the m u s i c a n d l y r i c s . T h i s w a s not a i d e d by A n n - M a r g r e t ( T o m m y ' s Mother) a n d O l i v e r R e e d (her lover) w h o , w h i l e looking good a n d a c t i n g w e l l , respectively, cannot s i n g .
