THE A C A D E M I C session 1974-75 will surely go down in the annals of IC Union's history as one renowned for its spasmodic outbreaks of " b i t c h i n g " ie criticism verging (on occasion) towards hostility. This d o e s not mean t o s u g g e s t that a l l the h o s t i l e c r i t i c i s m s w h i c h have a p p e a r e d h a v e b e e n i l l - f o u n d e d . Indeed h i d d e n a m o n g s t much of the rhetoric c a n be f o u n d fundamental debating points w h i c h reflect a genuine concern w i t h regard t o a particular topic .

T h e i s s u e t o be r a i s e d i s t h i s : Recognising firstly the bad feeling which "bitching" will inevitably create and secondly the fact that in the majority of instances, in the past year the controversy was settled amicably, then is it always necessary to raise the dispute in public? T h e r e i s e v i d e n c e to s u p p o r t the v i e w that i t i s the " p u b l i c "

destructive, mild and vehement. W h i l s t u n d o u b t e d l y the C o l u m n has b e e n l i v e l y a n d e n t e r t a i n i n g , the q u e s t i o n h a s t o b e a s k e d "A t what cost?" B y a l l means l e t u s have c o n t r o v e r s i e s , but next y e a r a t l e a s t , may the a l m o s t S a t a n i c rite of " b i t c h i n g " c e a s e . WHAT A SCORCHER! A T L A S T , it has happened. After much wheeling and dealing it was finally announced last Monday that the final plans, incorporating the original suggestions which had been agreed upon, are to be fully implemented " i n the very near future". T h i s a n n o u n c e m e n t , made by the E d i t o r o f F E U X , M i k e W i l l i a m s , c o m e s a s a great s h o c k t o many s e n i o r U n i o n o f f i c i a l s w h o were l a s t night e x p r e s s i n g "grave concern" about the p o s s i b l e effects t h i s u n e x p e c t e d move might have o n the future of F E L T X and i n d e e d the U n i o n i t s e l f . S p e a k i n g on b e h a l f o f t h e U n i o n , T r e v o r P h i l l i p s the I C U P r e s i d e n t s a i d , "I have no doubt that it is Mike Williams' to create within the intention broadly-based framework which

has been built up around FELIX this year a more fundamental style of approach to solving the more troublesome aspects of the newspaper which have been difficult to overcome in light of inflation and the Government cuts in educational expendure." The Freshers' D i n n e r ' g a v e the n e w c o m e r s in each department a n i n s i g h t i n t o the U n i o n a n d an o p p o r t u n i t y to meet some members of staff. T h i s run of d i n n e r s c u l m i n a t e d i n the one for the n e w D i v i s i o n of L i f e S c i e n c e s , a t t e n d e d b y the R e c t o r , D e a n , no l e s s than four H e a d s o f D e p a r t m e n t s and about 2 0 0 l e s s e r m o r t a l s . D u r i n g the year two other f o r m a l d i n n e r s w e r e he I d . The f i r s t w a s a q u a l i t y d i n n e r to c e l e b r a t e the c h r i s t e n i n g of the new T h e t a , w h i c h o c c u r e d , a m i d the p o p p i n g of C h a m p a g n e b o t t l e c o r k s , a t 1 9 3 0 hours o n T h u r s d a y 13th February. T h e Annual Dinner was h e l d e a r l y i n the summer term, a t t e n d e d by some hundre d people. The U n i o n ' s E n t e r t a i n m e n t s C o m m i t t e e , after r u n n i n g a v e r y p o p u l a r S m o k i n g C o n c e r t , e n t e r e d s k e t c h e s i n the other C C U R e v u e s a n d then e x p e r i m e n t e d w i t h "Voluptuous Variety",an old T i m e M u s i c h a l l . A lot of h a r d w o r k w a s put i n t o t h i s and d e s p i t e the s m a l l a u d i e n c e i t was very w e l l r e c e i v e d a n d there a r e p l a n s for another M u s i c H a l l next y e a r . T h e A n n u a l B a l l w a s a g a i n h e l d at S i l w o o d P a r k a n d , d e s p i t e minor f r i c t i o n w i t h s o m e r e s i d e n t s , was e n j o y e d b y a l l a t t e n d i n g . A d i s c o was p r o v i d e d a s w e l l a s the u s u a l d a n c e b a n d , c a b a r e t , c o f f e e lounge a n d b a r . A n e x t e n s i o n of E n t s w a s to p r o v i d e a r e g u l a r 'Night Out' in the s e c o n d term. T h i s grew out of a n i d e a u s e d i n R a g Week a n d these events i n c l u d e d i c e s k a t i n g and t r i p s to Cinema and Theatre. J e z e b e l w e n t , a s a n o b s e r v e r , o n the V C C B r i g h t o n R u n i n N o v e m b e r a n d one of the b i g - e n d b e a r i n g s d i s i n t e g r a t e d . S h e was towed b a c k to C o l l e g e , a r r i v i n g i n the very e a r l y hours and w a s off the r o a d for s i x m o n t h s . A f t e r o n l y 200 m i l e s the new b e a r i n g i s s h o w i n g s i g n s of wear a n d so J e z i s , once a g a i n , i n p i e c e s to determine the c a u s e a n d a p p l y some p r e v e n t i t i v e m e d i c i n e . A f t e r the l o s s of Theta to G u i l d s and its subsequent recovery following a protracted 'treasure' hunt, c o n s t r u c t i o n of a new T h e t a w a s b e g u n . It n o w c o n s i s t s of a s t a i n l e s s s t e e l b u l b w i t h s i x feet of h y d r a u l i c p i p i n g a t t a c h e d . T h e w h o l e w e i g h s over 1 OOlbs and the b u l b i s e n g r a v e d w i t h a n R C S C r o w n , a c a p i t a l ' T h e t a ' a n d the year ' 1 9 7 5 ' . T h e stem has a l o g a r i t h m i c s c a l e from z e r o to i n f i n i t y . On the p u b l i c i t y a n d r e t a i l s i d e , B r o a d s h e e t has c o n t i n u e d to be p u b l i s h e d and the range of R C S goods a v a i l a b l e has been extended. R C S S l o p p a n d T - s h i r t s have b e e n s e l l i n g w e l l a n d n e w l i n e s include s i n g l e t s , long-sleeved T - s h i r t s , RCS Hold-alls and Theta shirts. The year has marked a d i s t i n c t improvement i n R C S U / R C S A ( O l d Students A s s o c i a t i o n ) c o - o p e r a t i o n and c o - v e n t u r e s . T h e t w o o r g a n i s a t i o n s have s h a r e d a h a n d b o o k for s e v e r a l y e a r s a n d , to e n a b l e present s t u d e n t s to meet p a s t o n e s , R C S A ran a s e r i e s o f s h e r r y p a r t i e s for s e c o n d year students . The p a s t year has s e e n the s t a r t of the end of an e r a for the U n i o n . R C S U goes into s e s s i o n 1975/76 having — hopefully — moved into a s u i t e of o f f i c e s i n the n e w l y c o m p l e t e d W2 and a l s o e q u i p p e d w i t h a n e w m a s c o t , u n v i o l a t e d to d a t e , thanks to the efforst of D a d ' s A r m y . T h e U n i o n must c a t e r for a l l t a s t e s a n d thus its o f f i c e r s must make a l l p o s s i b l e efforts to f i n d out the v i e w s o f the U n i o n members and the U n i o n members must t e l l t h e i r o f f i c e r s w h a t they w a n t d o n e . F r e s h e r s D i n n e r s went off very w e l l t o o , a p a r t from D a v e ' s a n d my grey h a i r s at the C h e m E n g D i n n e r w h e n we f u l l y expected a fierce battle w i th R C S having p r e v i o u s l y ' b o r r o w e d ' t h e i r m a s c o t from the M a t h s F r e s h e r s D i n n e r . The p e d a l c a r c l u b went off to B r i s t o l a g a i n , and a l t h o u g h they had s c r a p p e d the e v e n t that we n o r m a l l y w i n w i t h o u t t e l l i n g us we managed to w i n one p r i z e . Motor C l u b t o o h a s been o r g a n i s i n g r a l l i e s , t r e a s u r e hunts a n d a u t o - t e s t s . Its very n i c e t o s e e the 'Old Lags' t u r n i n g out for these e v e n t s . C a r n i v a l d i d not happen a s u s u a l in the f i r s t term, but e v e n t u a l l y we held i t i n the f i r s t w e e k of the s p r i n g t e r m . A t l o n g l a s t the s a g a of the damage is now over a n d alleged we have p a i d £100 towards d a m a g e . I t h i n k that C a r n i v a l w i l l not be in C o l l e g e B l o c k for a w h i l e . The D i n n e r and Dance, although an outstanding s u c c e s s , w a s not very w e l l attended and I c a n s e e there b e i n g problems i n the future o r g a n i s i n g the more formal type of e v e n t w i t h i n the s t u d e n t s p o c k e t . R e v u e was the other t r a d i t i o n a l e v e n t that h a p p e n e d a n d t h i s too w a s s u c c e s s f u l w i t h a p p a r e n t l y a pretty ropey stripper. We t r i e d some G u i l d s o u t i n g s t o o t h i s y e a r : we went on a pub c r a w l and t o the c i n e m a and h o p e f u l l y they w i l l be e x t e n d e d and improved ne.xt y e a r . S p o r t i n g w i s e t o o we seem to have been f a i r l y s u c c e s s f u l : we w o n the s p a r k e s C u p (just) a n d the C o u r t m a n Shield (overwhelmingly). Our U n i o n meetings have not been very w e l l a t t e n d e d , p a r t l y due to the rather rowdy a f f a i r s that they have b e c o m e but we have had a c o u p l e o f very a m u s i n g ones the best b e i n g I t h i n k the hando v e r m e e t i n g a t the A l b e r t M e m o r i a l where a p p a r e n t l y we broke e v e r y rule i n the book. A s I s a i d I t h i n k that we have had a g o o d y e a r t h i s y e a r d e s p i t e many s e t b a c k s and I hope that next y e a r C i t y and G u i l d s U n i o n w i l l go from s t r e n g t h to s t r e n g t h .

A y e a r of i n v o l v e m e n t w i t h I C U n i o n h a s c o n v i n c e d me that s t u d e n t power a t I C v a n be d e f i n e d a s one of two t h i n g s ; e i t h e r the output and a n n o y a n c e v a l u e of a s t e r e o s y s t e m or the a b i l i t y of e l b o w a n d forearm to perform c y c l i c o p e r a t i o n s for p e r i o d s n o r m a l l y r a n g i n g b e t w e e n 1 and 24 h o u r s . So d i s a p p o i n t e d w a s I at one s t a g e , w i t h the l e v e l of s t u d e n t p a r t i c i p a t i o n that I, s e l f s t y l e d opponent of P h i l l i p s i a n left wing subversion, found myself proposing such unsporting ploys as "executive walkouts" and "withdrawal H o w e v e r , my d a y t r i p to the of facilities". L e f t E n d s o o n ended on r e a l i s i n g that the U n i o n a l l o c a t i o n of funds w a s on a per c a p i t a b a s i s . It o c c u r e d to me, i n a b a l a n c e r e s t o r i n g f l a s h , that the f e w e r p e o p l e m a k i n g u s e of the U n i o n ' s r e s o u r c e s and s e r v i c e s the more that r e m a i n e d for those w h o e n j o y e d p a r t i c i p a t i n g . A s I w a s amongst t h i s number, it therefore s e e m e d i n t e l l i g e n t to ignore the w h o l e i s s u e . My normal i m b a l a n c e h a v i n g been therefore r e s t o r e d , I t r i e d to come to terms w i t h s t u d e n t a p a t h y w i t h r e s p e c t to I C U n i o n

a n d never q u i t e s u c c e e d e d . Of c o u r s e it is not s o d i f f i c u l t i n M i n e s , where a n a v e r a g e of a b o u t 50% undergraduate p a r t i c i p a t i o n c a n be a c h i e v e d , a n d it is i n t h i s s p i r i t that our s t r e n g t h in Mines l i e s . D e s p i t e a few set b a c k s d u r i n g the y e a r , n o t a b l y the r e m o v a l of our D a v y by G u i l d s , a charitable opposition would not d e n y the q u a l i t y performance of our s m a l l s e c t i o n of the c o l l e g e . T h e s u c c e s s i s a t t r i b u t a b l e to the M i n e s S p i r i t ( m o s t l y a l c o h o l ) , i t s ' members a n d the o r g a n i s e r s of the y e a r s s o c i a l a n d rag c o l l e c t i n g activities. Even taking account of i n f l a t i o n , our c o n t r i b u t i o n of £2350 to r a g g i v e s some i n d i c a t i o n of the v e r y hard work put i n by P a t G o r m a n a n d the S o c i a l Reps . T h e r e l a t i o n s h i p of G r e a t B r i t a i n to the C o m m o n M a r k e t i s p a r a l l e l e d by the Constituent College/Imperial College r e l a t i o n s h i p s . In the s e a r c h for u n i t y a n d efficiency the c o n s t i t u e n t o r g a n i s a t i o n c o m b i n e , e x c h a n g i n g s e r v i c e s and s h a r i n g facilities. As a natural consequence some r i g h t to self determination is s a c r i f i c e d and t h i s has b e e n a c c e p t e d .

We began the year w i t h a tour of As You Like It to s c h o o l s in the s o u t h of E n g l a n d (see F E L I X N o . 3 6 3 ) ; w e a l s o performed to p u b l i c a u d i e n c e s at L y m i n g t o n a n d W i n c h e s t e r . T h e new s e s s i o n saw a n influx of keen new members (not a l l of them f r e s h e r s ) and t h i s w a s h a v e n the f e s t i v a l g a v e s e v e r a l perhaps the m a i n c a u s e of our success in the December P r o d u c t i o n s from a b r o a d , and to P various workp r o d u c t i o n o f The Real Inspector H o u n d and Albert's Bridge, s h o p s offered, both by T o m S t o p p a r d . T h i s y e a r w e were g i v e n the d a u n t i n g t a s k of a t t e m p t i n g to r e t a i n 8 0 % of the a v a i l a b l e t r o p h i e s . O n a r r i v a l at the s t a r t , s o much time w a s put i n t o the p o l i s h i n g , i n a n attempt to r e t a i n the C o n c o u r s e Trophy, that w e forgot to r e a d the regulations a n d this resulted i n our r e c e i v i n g three time f a u l t s : one for b e i n g a minute e a r l y a t the f i r s t time c o n t r o l , the s e c o n d for not b e i n g the same amount e a r l y a t the s e c o n d , a n d the t h i rd for b e i n g a minute e a r l y ( a g a i n ) a t the e n d . C o n f u s e d ? S o were w e . A t the P o l i c e H Q a t Hutton a l l the v e h i c l e s were put through a d r i v i n g t e s t , W h i c h a s far a s B o ' w a s c o n c e r n e d w a s t e s t o f h i s rather m i n i m a l l o c k , s i n c e i n order to g e t round the tight c o r n e r s i n t i m e , e v e n a t the hands o f the i n t r e p i d R a i n e , a c e r t a i n amount of rear-end s l i d e and opposite l o ck was in e v i d e n c e . E v e n s o w e were s t i l l 313 s e c o n d s o v e r time w h i c h p l a c e d u s about 10th o u t of the 175 or s o e n t r i e s . Although the rules suggested that v e t e r a n s s h o u l d be l o a d e d onto t r a i l e r s at H u t t o n , we d e c i d e d that i t w o u l d be q u i c k e r t o d r i v e B o ' the r e m a i n i n g twenty m i l e s to B l a c k p o o l v i a the v i n t a g e r o u t e , rather than have to l o a d u p a n d then o b s e r v e the 40mph t r a i l e r t o w i n g l i m i t . Some of the marshalls took quite a lot of persuading that although we were still driving, we were no longer competing. M o s t o f t h i s part of the j o u r n e y w a s s p e n t w a v i n g at s p e c t a t o r s who s e e m e d to h a v e t a k e n the o p p o r t u n i t y of the fine w e a t h e r to come o u t i n f o r c e . THE EPILOGUE OR: Reflections on the past year T h e p a s t y e a r for F E L I X h a s b e e n one o f i n e x o r a b l e c h a n g e . A new method o f p r i n t i n g has been a d o p t e d a n d the a s s o c i a t e d h a s s l e to e s t a b l i s h the new p a t t e r n of p r o d u c t i o n w a s a n t i c i p a t e d , e n c o u n t e r e d a n d f i n a l l y c o n q u e r e d i n the d i f f i c u l t a n d p r o t r a c t e d b i r t h of w h a t i s , i n e s s e n c e , a n e w k i n d of F E L I X . B u t the n e w n e s s d o e s not s t o p a t the p h y s i c a l appearance o f the n e w s p a p e r . My major criteria for the future development of FELIX are rooted in the past, hound in black buckram and are currently sitting on one of the shelves in my office quietly representing twenty-five years of student life at IC, warts and all. Insofar a s a n i n n o v a t i o n (as o p p o s e d to a g i m m i c k ) i s a v e s t i g e o f progress, then it f o l l o w s that F E L I X has made g i a n t s t r i d e s s i n c e 1949 h e n c e true t o t r a d i t i o n I have b e e n a t p a i n s to e n c o u r a g e i n n o v a t i o n s t h i s y e a r s u c h a s the V a c a t i o n I s s u e s , the C a r e e r s S u p p l e m e n t , the Motor R a l l y , the P h o t o g r a p h i c C o m p e t i t i o n e t c s o t h a t F E L I X not o n l y looks new but is n e w . B u t to b e g i n a t the b e g i n n i n g . August l s t last year s a w a n enthusi a s t i c C h e m i s t r y graduate t a k i n g the h e l m , c o n f i d e n t o f b e i n g at l e a s t a b l e t o s t a y a f l o a t after b e i n g t h r o w n i n a t the d e e p e n d . It d i d take me a w h i l e to determine that the p r e v i o u s year's regime had i n a d v e r t a n t l y e n c a s e d my feet in c o n c r e t e (and t o my m i s f o r t u n e , not the h i g h a l u m i n o - s t l i c a t e k i n d ) . / swammeth not. I didst flounder immeasurably and found it grotesquely unfunny. T h e o f f s e t - l i t h o a n d i t s r e t i n u e of associated machinery had a n almost infinite absorption coefficient i n respect of the w e i r d e s t s p e c t r u m o f u n w e l c o m e gremlins i m a g i n e a b l e . In h i n d s i g h t , I realise i t w o u l d have b e e n a hedge against inflation had I invested in a firm w h i c h m a n u f a c t u r e s a s p i r i n s . B y the time the s e s s i o n w a s about to b e g i n , w i t h the p r o d u c t i o n o f the D i a r y h a v i n g p r a c t i c a l l y done me to d e a t h , I w a s prepared t o j a c k i t i n , throw i n the t o w e l , r e s i g n , k i c k t h e U n i o n u p the bum a n d l a u g h a l l the w a y b a c k t o the polymer l a b s . S a d l y , some h e r o i c demon c a u g h t me u n a w a r e s . / was going to see it through come hell or high water. T h e f i r s t term a s i n a n y k i n d of s e l f perpetuating, connected series had its u n u s u a l e v e n extreme b e g i n n i n g s . T h e F r e s h e r s ' I s s u e w a s a t o t a l p a i n i n the n a u s . Imagine the s c e n e a t m i d n i g h t the F r i d a y before the b e g i n n i n g of t e r m . T h e litho-operator is hanging around w a i t i n g to run the l a s t p l a t e w h i c h h a p p e n s to be the c o v e r . T h e front page i s a h e a d l i n e , Prices Up 17 Per one s t o r y ("Refectory Cent")and the r e s t b l a n k . I a m f r a n t i c a l l y v a r i t y p i n g another s t o r y ("Copulation: a Union Discipline Offence?"). I'ts done, titled i s letrasetted, i t ' s a l l pasted-up and i t ' s 2 a m . T h e r e ' s s t i l l a n i c e b i g s p a c e i n the m i d d l e t o f i l l . T h e l i t h o operator i s g e t t i n g i m p a t i e n t . S u d d e n l y a f l a s h of g r o s s i n s p i r a t i o n : "How about space-filling with FELIX WELCOMES effects FRESHERS'?" P a u s e . Sound denotes severe h o n k i n g . B u t there's no other c h o i c e . So i t goes i n . Elsewhere, egoes were strutting ( e s p e c i a l l y w h e n d r u n k ) , grand p o s t u r e s were b e i n g s t r u c k a n d haughty a f f e c t a t i o n s of s t a t u s g l i b l y g l i d e d from b u b b l e t o b u b b l e . T h i s w a s I C a t i t s most e n t e r t a i n i n g . T h e c o m p e t i t i v e s p i r i t w a s f r e s h and a g g r e s s i v e a n d morale w a s h i g h . N e w ground w a s e f f o r t l e s s l y b e i n g covered d a i l y . A n d there w a s the E d i t o r , h i s c o n c r e t e s o c k s o n l y j u s t b e g i n n i n g to c h i p a w a y , d o w n at the d e e p e n d . Say a l o u d i n an a c c u s i n g v o i c e : "Why is FELIX such an insignificant size? Why are the photos so crummy? What do you mean, there's been machine trouble? What are the so-called production difficulties? Why the hell haven't you printed our sports reports? What does

'opportunist' mean? Just what do you do with your sabbatical time, eh? What do you mean you haven't got time to produce and distribute those UGM posters? The Union Publicity had better be done by tomorrow — or else!" A g g r e s s i o n was i n the a s c e n d a n t . D e l e t e ' l e t t e r p r e s s ' ; i n s e r t 'offset-litho'; now consider the r a m i f i c a t i o n s of p r o d u c i n g a p u b l i c a t i o n y o u r s e l f o n the p r e m i s e s . D o n ' t t h i n k t o o h a r d , your b r a i n w i l l g e t z a p p e d through severe overwork. I am unable to avoid b e i n g angered by the c o n c e p t of i n t o l e r a n c e on s u c h a w i d e s c a l e . T h e f i r s t term s a w F E L I X c e l e b r a t e i t s S i l v e r A n n i v e r s a r y . B a r r i n g the b a n a n a fritter (titter t i t t e r ) the c o m m e m o r a t i v e d i n n e r w a s a great s u c c e s s w i t h s e v e n t y people a t t e n d i n g , e i g h t of w h i c h were past E d i t o r s . The 2 5 t h A n n i v e r s a r y i s s u e w a s a n a m b i t i o u s p r o j e c t w h i c h o n l y j u s t made i t , but i t n e v e r t h e l e s s p a i d off h a n d s o m e l y . T h e i n t e n t i o n w a s to make i t a c o l l e c t o r ' s item w i t h the s i l v e r banner a n d t r i m m i n g s , twenty p a g e s , g o l d h e a v y w e i g h t c o v e r and w i t h p l a t e s c o n t a i n i n g photographs b e i n g made p r o f e s s i o n a l l y i n C h a n c e r y L a n e . T h e f a c t that e v e r y one o f t h e a p p r o x imately 2,800 c o p i e s produced disappeared i n record time i s some measure of achievement. The s e c o n d term s t a r t e d off i n n o c u o u s l y enough w i t h the h a s s l e of p r o d u c i n g a Careers Supplement. T h i s w a s only a moderate s u c c e s s i n terms of a d v e r t i s i n g revenue but the f e e d b a c k o n the i d e a h a s b e e n v e r y e n c o u r a g i n g . T w o other n o t a b l e things happened during J a n u a r y . F i r s t l y , after the U n i o n f i n a l l y s a w s e n s e a n d r e l i e v e d me of my d u t i e s a s P u b l i c i t y O f f i c e r , the s u b j e c t w a s r a i s e d at the f o l l o w i n g C o u n c i l . T h i s p r o v o k e d a s u b s e q u e n t d i s c u s s i o n where a l l a n d sundry eagerly expressed their discontent w i t h my h a n d l i n g of the U n i o n p u b l i c i t y . But more importantly it highlighted certain prejudices and areas of total ignorance which 1 immediately became determined to overcome. By n o w my c o n c r e t e socks were s h o w i n g s i g n s of c r a c k i n g . S o o n e r or l a t e r I w o u l d be a b l e t o h o l d my o w n i n t h e d e e p e n d . It w a s b o u n d t o h a p p e n e v e n t u a l l y , but w o u l d i t h a p p e n i n time? S e c o n d l y , the c o n t r o v e r s i a l t o p i c o f the Third Sabbatical w a s ominously raised. The I C U President understandably t r i e d to u n d e r p l a y the i d e a o f r e - a l l o c a t i n g the F E L I X S a b b a t i c a l b y b r i e f l y i n t r o d u c i n g the t o p i c a s a k i n d o f p o s t s c r i p t to the P r e s i d e n t ' s b u s i n e s s . Indeed h i s words a t t h e time w e r e : " . . . a n d C o u n c i l may h a v e t o t a k e a d e c i s i o n o n t h i s m a t t e r . " (My e m p h a s i s i n i t a l i c ) . When the time came for the d e c i s i o n to be t a k e n , the m a j o r i t y of the E x e c u t i v e were q u i t e r i g h t l y u n d e c i d e d : They had not sufficient informal ion upon which to base a decision .The. recommenda t i o n to r e - a l l o c a t e the F E L I X s a b b a t i c a l to the a s yet u n c r e a t e d p o s t of F i n a n c e / B u i l d i n g s O f f i c e r w a s r e j e c t e d in f a v o u r of a move to c r e a t e a n o n - s a b b a t i c a l J u n i o r T r e a s u r e r a n d a w o r k i n g party to i n v e s t i g a t e , gather the f a c t s a n d make r e c o m m e n d a t i o n s on the w o r k i n g s of the F E L I X office a n d the central a d m i n i s t r a t i o n . U i s g r a t i f y i n g to state now that the w o r k i n g party report w h i c h i s t o be p r e s e n t e d to J o i n t C o u n c i l next Monday has independently confirmed p r a c t i c a l l y e v e r y t h i n g that I s a i d and argued at the time w h e n the t o p i c w a s first broached. T h e s i t u a t i o n w i t h regard the F E L I X s a b b a t i c a l was potentially dangerous: a r e - a l l o c a t i o n w o u l d have far-reaching ÂŁ disastrous consequences i n my v i e w . T h e c o m p l e x arguments i n v o l v e d made the whole thing very vulnerable to m i s c o n c e p t i o n . A w o r k i n g party was essential for a meaningful outcome. "Complexity breeds vulnerability" is an axiom which I coined last summer. Whilst some w i l l a l w a y s d i s b e l i e v i n g l y sneer at i t , I n e v e r t h e l e s s f e e ! that it i s a p p l i c a b l e to a w i d e v a r i e t y of s i t u a t i o n s . How many of us were vulnerable to the misconceptions created on either side due to the complexity of the arguments used during the recent Referendum campaigns? T h e s e c o n d term s a w the brunt of the N F v . T h e L e f t s a g a , m u c h of w h i c h w a s a p p r o x i m a t e l y tiresome . P e r s o n a l l y I was unable to endorse the a t t i t u d e of e i t h e r s i d e , my main c o n c e r n at the time b e i n g i n terms of w h a t the o v e r s e a s s t u d e n t s at I C felt about the s i t u a t i o n . Many of them s e e m e d q u i t e u n p e r t u r b e d . I found the N F ' s r a c i s t a t t i t u d e u n p l e a s a n t a n d the L e f t ' s t a c t i c s s i l l y . I s h o u l d have thought that the L e f t w o u l d have r e a l i s e d by now that to try and m u z z l e another group's v i e w w i l l o n l y i n c r e a s e that group's morale w h i c h is the l a s t t h i n g that the L e f t w a n t . B e s i d e s the c o n c e p t of " f r e e d o m of s p e e c h " i s a s e n s i t i v e one to toy w i t h . A n d more r e c e n t l y , a c o m p u t i n g P G s a i d : "The Left say 'We must stamp out Fascism'. But that's about as fascist as you can get!" March s a w the f i r s t F E L I X A n n u a l Motor R a l l y . T h e three C C U ' s f i e l d e d a t o t a l of s e v e n teams (poor s h o w R C S ! ) . A p a r t from d i s r u p t i n g a s e r v i c e a t St P a u l ' s and b r u s h i n g w i t h the P o l i c e at T r a f a l g a r S q u a r e , a l l went f a i r l y s m o o t h l y . I r o n i c a l l y e n o u g h , if l o o k s c o u l d k i l l then the e v e n t u a l w i n n e r s of the R a l l y P o t w o u l d have been r e s p o n s i b l e for my d e m i s e s e v e r a l times o v e r ! N e x t came the E a s t e r v a c a t i o n . T h e N U S Student J o u r n a l i s t c o n f e r e n c e was i n t e r e s t i n g and propounded c e r t a i n i d e a s about the N a t i o n a l P r e s s s a y i n g that many national newspapers deliberately gave student a c t i v i s t s d i s t o r t e d c o v e r a g e j u s t b e c a u s e they tended to be l e f t - w i n g . Lies, I thought, sheer fabrication. T h e n came a l o n g the N U S N a t i o n a l C o n f e r e n c e at L l a n d u d n o where I c o m p a r e d what I had s e e n and heard w i t h w h a t the N a t i o n a l P r e s s h a d to s a y the f o l l o w i n g day. N e e d l e s s to s a y , my a t t i t u d e to those p a r t i c u l a r reports went s o m e t h i n g l i k e : "Lies. All lies." C l e a r l y my h i t h e r t o moderate credentials were slightly

nudged to the l e f t . T h e v a c a l s o s a w the s e c o n d V a c a t i o n F E L I X p r o d u c e d under my E d i t o r s h i p (the first was F E L L X N o . 361, a twelve-page i s s u e p r o d u c e d d u r i n g the summer l a s t y e a r ) . T h e f e e d b a c k I have r e c e i v e d has formed the b a s i s for the b e l i e f that the c o n c e p t of V a c a t i o n F E L I C E S p r e s e n t s a very r e a l o p p o r t u n i t y for the U n i o n to involve its postgraduate membership. The s t a t u s of the P G not o n l y a c a d e m i c a l l y but w i t h i n the framework of the U n i o n a l s o is c u r r e n t l y a s e n s i t i v e i s s u e . Who indeed can best represent the interests of PG's ? The IC PGG or ICU? T h e s o o n e r t h i s q u e s t i o n i s f a c e d up to a n d r e s o l v e d , the better . The third and f i n a l term m e n a c i n g l y p o k e d i t s c r a n i u m over the gloomy h o r i z o n b r i n g i n g w i t h it the r e a l i s a t i o n that most of the F E L I X Staff w o u l d be z a p p e d to smithereans by impending exams. I i m a g i n e d m y s e l f a t t e m p t i n g to write the whole n e w s p a p e r m y s e l f and d o i n g the c o l l a t i n g on T h u r s d a y n i g h t a l l on my t o d d . (gob, s o b ) . T h a t left me f e e l i n g s e m i - u n c o m f o r t a b l e - I t w a s s o m e t h i n g that I had a n t i c i p a t e d l a s t term a n d s o I came up w i t h the idea of p r o d u c i n g two fourpage i s s u e s per w e e k . E a c h e d i t i o n w o u l d require j u s t f o l d i n g w i t h no c o l l a t i n g . The p r a c t i c a l s i d e of this i n n o v a t i o n w o r k e d f i n e , but my e n t h u s i a s m for the s i z e (four pages as o p p o s e d to the u s u a l t w e l v e ) left me s l i g h t l y j a d e d . The last straw came when someone told me that there just was no longer enough in the Friday FELIX to get them through their first morning lecture. My d u t i f u l c o n s c i e n c e c o u l d take no more, s o w e e k l y e i g h t page i s s u e s returned to f i n a l l y e c l i p s e the s e s s i o n . N e v e r t h e l e s s , the point has been now u n q u e s t i o n a b l y proven that two F E L I C E S per w e e k c a n be done . It w i l l be up to future S a b b a t i c a l e d i t o r s to d e c i d e whether s u c h a n i d e a be further e x p l o i t e d . T h e r e s u l t of my f i n a l project is what y o u are l o o k i n g at now: a m u l t i c o l o u r F E L I X . I e x p e c t t h i s i d e a to become an a n n u a l e v e n t . The very r e a l problem h o w e v e r w i t h c o l o u r work is that it takes much longer to dry (as o p p o s e d to u s i n g b l a c k ink) thus paste-ups have to be produced w e l l in a d v a n c e . A s far a s I'm c o n c e r n e d , the n o v e l t y of m u l t i c o l o u r work was j u s t g a s p i n g to be t r i e d out, s o there. I w o u l d l i k e b r i e f l y to turn my a t t e n t i o n to one or two a s p e c t s of the U n i o n . I have been s e r i o u s l y c o n c e r n e d that too many good p o l i t i c a l i d e a s have been thrown out of U n i o n meetings s i m p l y b e c a u s e the proposers of these ideas have had negligible g r o u n d i n g in t h e art of c o m m u n i c a t i n g c o m p l e x arguments to a s c e p t i c a l audience. The concept of p r e s e n t a t i o n comes up once a g a i n . Few p e o p l e r e c o g n i s e its p o t e n t i a l . In one r e s p e c t N U S i s d i v o r c e d from the g r a s s root s t u d e n t s : many of the speeches made at the L l a n d u d n o c o n f e r e n c e were t h e a t r i c a l performances of p r e a c h i n g to the c o n v e r t e d w h i c h w o u l d have been l a u g h e d out of the G r e a t H a l l here at I C . P o l i t i c a l a w a r e n e s s has a very low c o e f f i c i e n t w i t h i n t h i s U n i o n , but to make a n y h e a d w a y the powers that be must c r a w l before they c a n w a l k . This is a point which I believe the current leadership has missed. (Over to y o u , Mr T e a g u e ) . T h i s now r a i s e s the s u b j e c t of p e r s p e c t i v e s i n c e we are c o n s t a n t l y b e i n g e x h o r t e d to c o n s i d e r the w i d e r s p e c i e s of this almost metaphysical a n i m a l . I think it is true to say that to m a i n t a i n a narrow p e r s p e c t i v e on a c o n t r o v e r s i a l i s s u e be it abortion, c a p i t a l punishment, women's l i b , the e d u c a t i o n c u t s w h a t e v e r , is to be a r e a c t i o n a r y of the f i r s t order. T h u s the p r o g r e s s i v e trend is to try" and g r a s p the wider p e r s p e c t i v e . B u t c o n s i d e r a l s o that w i d e r a p e r s p e c t i v e becomes (eg l o o k i n g at a n a t i o n a l c o n f l i c t i n the c o n t e x t of the current i n t e r n a t i o n a l s i t u a t i o n ) , the

more d i f f i c u l t , i n g e n e r a l , it b e c o m e s to v i s u a l i s e (and h e n c e the more d i f f i c u l t for someone to c o n v i n c e others of its v a l i d i t y ) ; and once that h a p p e n s , o n e ' s p o l i t i c a l e d u c a t i o n becomes s u s c e p t i b l e to u n s c r u p u l o u r d i s t o r t i o n . It i s the "oomplexity breeds vulnerability" argument a l l o v e r a g a i n . B u t I do not w i s h to d w e l l on t h i s for too m u c h l o n g e r . It is often s a i d that "facts speak for themselves". T o that k i n d of n a i v e t y I w o u l d a d d "occasionally". Facts can e a s i l y be l o s t by a m u m b l i n g s p e a k e r a n d e x a g g e r a t e d by an e l o q u e n t orator (after, s h r e w d s e l e c t i o n , n a t u r a l l y ) . The recent Referendum campaigns have clearly shown us that distortion, whether by exaggeration, omission or skilfull appropriation of emphasis is part of politicans' lives and anyone aspiring to such status would be hypocrite to deny this. Y e s , it w o u l d be true to s a y that I a m a p e s s i m i s t i c c y n i c . It reflects the extent of my disillusionment. T h i s Epilogue w c u l d not be c o m p l e t e w i t h o u t a few words about the I C U P r e s ident. Trevor P h i l l i p s h a s been a formidable adversary this year, often p r o v i n g h i m s e l f the master of procedure and d e b a t i n g s t r a t e g y . He has o c c a s i o n a l l y p u b l i c l y a p p e a r e d to be very c o o l w h i l s t private reports have i n d i c a t e d that h i s anger o v e r a p a r t i c u l a r i s s u e r a i s e d by F E L I X has been i n t e n s e . He has w o r k e d extremely hard, c o n s i s t e n t l y and determine d l y ; h i s n e a r - i n f i n i t e c a p a c i t y for b e i n g s h r e w d has h e l d h i m in good s t e a d i n h i s n e g o t i a t i o n s at C o l l e g e l e v e l . T r e v o r w a s c o n c e r n e d at the b e g i n n i n g of the s e s s i o n that any k i n d of d e f e n c e or f a v o u r a b l e c o n n e c t i o n w i t h F E L I X might be c o n s t r u e d by h i s " o p p o n e n t s " as refl e c t i n g our then c l o s e f r i e n d s h i p — s u c h was h i s a n t i c i p a t i o n of p o s s i b l e f r i c t i o n w i t h i n the E x e c u t i v e . Happily, such a situation was peremptorily precluded following certain personal events which appear unlikely ever to be resolved fully. T r e v o r h a s not had an e a s y year. A f t e r much vehement l e t t e r - w r i t i n g to F E L I X in past y e a r s on the "Crisis of leaders hip" w i t h i n the U n i o n , he took o f f i c e h a v i n g stormed home i n the e l e c t i o n s w i t h a m a s s i v e 919 v o t e s , o n l y to find the U G M s as b a d l y a t t e n d e d a s b e f o r e, r a r e l y (if e v e r ) b r o a c h i n g the 200 mark; N U S D e m o His c o n t i n g e n t s never e x c e e d e d 7 0 . b r o a d l y - b a s e d ' a c t i v e ' support had s u d d e n l y become ' p a s s i v e ' , a l m o s t t a c i t : an embarassing situation to be in. I s h a l l a l w a y s remember T r e v o r P h i l l i p s for h i s a m b i v a l e n c e (a v e s t i g e of things to c o m e ? ) W h i l s t on the one hand he h a s been a major i n s p i r a t i o n as regards my own p e r s o n a l p o l i t i c a l e d u c a t i o n and the p e r s u a n c e of t h o r o u g h n e s s and d i p l o m a c y , he n e v e r t h e l e s s , from my p o i n t of v i e w , c a s t a n uncomfortable s h a d o w on F E L I X . I w a s e x t r e m e l y unhapp y w i t h the a t t i t u d e w h i c h he adopted over the q u e s t i o n of F E L I X ' s s a b b a t i c a l . I c a n now r e v e a l that I h a v e read the c o n f i d e n t i a l d i s c u s s i o n paper w h i c h T r e v o r p r e s e n t e d to the E x e c u t i v e prior to the C o u n c i l meet i n g w h e n the d e c i s i o n r e g a r d i n g the F E L I X s a b b a t i c a l w a s t a k e n . Some of the a s s e r t i o n s w h i c h he made left me i n a s t a t e of supreme a n d t o t a l a n g e r . N e v e r before had I been forced to q u e s t i o n h i s i n t e g r i t y . I hope that I s h a l l never have to do s o a g a i n . I am s t i l l c u r i o u s a s to why T r e v o r a w a r d e d me a U G A , b e c a u s e he and I have often b e g g e d to differ on i r r e c o n c i l a b l e g r o u n d s , s o m e t i m e s i n the most vehement t e r m s . T h u s my i n i t i a l r e a c t i o n to r e c e i v i n g t h i s s l a p on the b a c k w a s to r e j e c t i t . B u t s u c h a g e s t u r e , e v e n a r e f u s a l to wear the t i e , w o u l d o n l y have been c o n s i d e r e d as i r r a t i o n a l t o k e n i s m . Suffice it is to say that I remain unhappy about the award and curious about the criteria which were used for awarding it. (Continued

F i n a l l y , a few m i s c e l l a n e o u s c o m m e n t s . It h a s b e e n for me a great p r i v i l e d g e to be the E d i t o r of F E L I X . I n e v e r t h e l e s s l o o k forward to p a s s i n g on t h i s b u r d e n . D u r i n g the f i r s t term I got through 100 t a b l e t s of 'Hedex'. It w a s no j o k e w h e n I f e l l a s l e e p one n i g h t t r y i n g to s o l v e a l a y - o u t p r o b l e m : I w o k e up the f o l l o w i n g m o r n i n g still t h i n k i n g about i t . T h e w o r s t part of the E d i t o r ' s j o b o c c u r s w h e n he h a s to f i n d e n o u g h e n t h u s i a s m to w r i t e up a very t r i v i a l s t o r y . T h i s year has b e e n i n t e n s ely interesting and extremely c h a l l e n g i n g , but I c a n n o t , i n the true s e n s e of the w o r d , s a y that I h a v e enjoyed t h i s y e a r . I n d e e d , beena sabbatical year is not there to joyed; it is a year of hard work and rightly so. I am not a male c h a u v i n i s t p i g : I j u s t cannot stand those i n s i p i d females who b e l i e v e that they are G o d ' s gift to I C ; t h e y d o no good to the c a u s e of w o m e n ' s e q u a l i t y w h a t s o e v e r . One b i g regret that I have had o v e r the p a s t year h a s b e e n my d i s m a l and u n f o r g i v a b l e f a i l u r e to r e c o g n i s e the p o t e n t i a l of s p o r t s a r t i c l e s a s p o s s i b l e front-page l e a d s . A R E S I D E N T of G a r d e n H a l l i s g r a v e l y i l l i n h o s p i t a l today f o l l o w i n g a 60ft f a l l form h i s w i n d o w on T u e s d a y n i g h t . B r i a n M e t c a l f w a s s t a n d i n g on h i s b a l c o n y a s a f r i e n d went to the d o o r . When the f r i e n d returned he had f a l l e n . When he w a s r e a c h e d he w a s c o n c i o u s w i t h h i s h e a d r e s t i n g on some p l a s t i c g u t t e r i n g w h i c h he h a d brought d o w n w i t h him. A n ambulance was immediately c a l l e d . F i v e m i n u t e s l a t e r three fire engines turned u p . T h e a m b u l a n c e a p p e a r e d about ten m i n u t e s after t h i s . It took a further h a l f a n hour to remove h i m s o a s not to exacerbate his injuries in any w a y . T h e p o l i c e were a l s o at the s c e n e and it w a s they w h o m e a s u r e d the h e i g h t of h i s f a l l , a s w e l l as b r i n g i n g d o w n some p l a s t i c g u t t e r i n g he i s b e l i e v e d to h a v e s t r u c k some w i r e n e t t i n g . On arrival at St. Mary's H o s p i t a l P a d d i n g t o n B r i a n w a s p l a c e d i n the i n t e n s i v e c a r e unit where h i s c o n d i t i o n w a s s a i d to be c r i t i c a l . H i s i n j u r i e s include a d i s l o c a t e d p e l v i s , a broken thigh, several broken r i b s , a c o l l a p s e d l u n g , and i n t e r n a l b l e e d i n g . T h e l a t e s t b u l l e t i n i n d i c a t e s the l o c a t i o n of the i n t e r n a l b l e e d i n g has not been found and is s t i l l s e r i o u s l y i l l . B r i a n is a f i r s t year P h y s i c i s t and had already completed his e x a m s . He had been under total anaesthetic at the d e n t i s t on M o n d a y and had drunk four p i n t s on T u e s d a y e v e n i n g . It i s thought that t h i s r e s u l t e d i n a d i z z y s p e l l or temporary b l a c k o u t w h i c h c a u s e d h i m to f a l l .

There is no a c c e p t e d p o l i c y on the award of I C U S o c i a l C o l o u r s or U G A s , e x c e p t the Council minute that lays down the c o m p o s i t i o n of the C o l o u r s C o m m i t t e e , and s a y s that C o u n c i l may a w a r d s o c i a l c o l o u r s after the S o c i a l C o l o u r s C o m m i t t e e has made its l i s t of r e c o m m e n d a t i o n s . T h e manner in w h i c h s e l e c t i o n is made is governed by c o n v e n t i o n o n l y ; and t h o s e c o n v e n t i o n s have c h a n g e d w i t h v i r t u a l l y every year. F o r i n s t a n c e in the c a s e of S o c i a l C o l o u r s , this year we conducted a secret ballot amongst the members of the C o m m i t t e e , after h a v i n g had a n e x p l a n a t i o n of the m e r i t s of e a c h p e r s o n n o m i n a t e d . T h i s e n s u r e d that the l i s t w a s much more selective t han h i t h e r t o , a n d , I w o u l d a r g u e , more m e a n i n g f u l . T h e r e w a s a larger number of n o m i n a t i o n s than l a s t year. In the c a s e of U G A ' s , the c o n v e n t i o n s have c h a n g e d much more r a p i d l y , from a point w h e r e the P r e s i d e n t awarded t h e m , after c o n s u l t a t i o n w i t h the H o n S e c and D P , to the present s i t u a t i o n where the President has absolute d i s c r e t i o n and g i v e s a w a r d s to whom he l i k e s , and for what r e a s o n s he a l o n e s e e s f i t . U G A ' s Award. are e f f e c t i v e l y a P r e s i d e n t ' s T h e r e is no q u e s t i o n of h i s " a c c e p t i n g " or " r e j e c t i n g " one, a s i m p l i e d by F E L I X . It h a s t i e e n argued that he s h o u l d r e c e i v e one e x - o f f i c i o , to s a v e him the e m b a r r a s s ment of a w a r d i n g h i m s e l f o n e . T h i s Is a b s u r d . H o w c a n anyone r e c e i v e a n a w a r d , p r e s u m a b l y for o u t s t a n d i n g s e r v i c e in h i s o f f i c e , s i m p l y by v i r t u e of h a v i n g h e l d that o f f i c e ? B y d e f i n i t i o n most P r e s i d e n t s , s a y * wi II be m e d i o c r e , not o u t s t a n d i n g . Worse y e t , c a n one a w a r d o n e s e l f " t h e supreme a c c o l a d e " ? Of c o u r s e not; t h i s w o u l d be b e h a v i o u r r e m i n i s c e n t of the most pompous and s e l f - i m p o r t a n t t i n p o t b a n a n a - s t a t e r u l e r s . It is b e h a v i o u r that

H o w e v e r , the w o r s t a s p e c t of it a l l i s that U G A s are a w a r d e d on the d e c i s i o n one person o n l y , and the one p e r s o n w i t h p r o b a b l y the most b i a s e d o p i n i o n s on the U n i o n ' s p r i o r i t i e s . In my c a s e I g a v e U G A ' s to p e o p l e w h o r e a l l y c o u l d not be d e n i e d them by any r e c k o n i n g . T h e y w e r e a l s o p e r s o n a l t r i b u t e s to p e o p l e for w h o s e work I have a great d e a l of a d m i r a t i o n , in different w a y s . However is it a c c e p t a b l e that the U n i o n ' s premier a w a r d s h o u l d be made in s u c h a w a y ? . I t h i n k n o t . E v e n the C o l l e t p only award F e l l o w s h i p s through the G o v e r n i n g B o d y — on r e c o m m e n d a t i o n of the F e l l o w s h i p s C o m m i t t e e . T h e q u e s t i o n must be a s k e d a s to w h y I d i d not e n d the s y s t e m m y s e l f . T h e a n s w e r is s i m p l y that the r e o r g a n i s a t i o n of a w a r d s has not been my major p r i o r i t y t h i s y e a r ; whether we g i v e U G A s or not i s u n l i k e l y to c h a n g e the p r i c e of c h e e s e . The least s a i d about t h i s game the better but m e n t i o n s h o u l d be made of M. Cotter, known to his friend as the H o g , and A . W i l l i a m s for h i s f i n e t r y . S o r r o w s were q u i c k l y drowned w i t h bottles of S t e l l a a n d the Belgian populace subjected themselves to s t o u t r e n d e r i n g s of N e l l i e Hawkins. The e v e n i n g after m a t c h were virtually celebrations excessive w i t h many p e o p l e o n l y j u s t m a n a g i n g to s t a g g e r the fifty yards from cafe R o y a l to the h o t e l . A t 1.00 pm the h o t e l d o o r s w e r e l o c k e d and barred but S. C h u d y , s u f f e r i n g from a fit of c l a u s t r o p h o b i a , left v i a the w i n d o w and the a i d of a d r a i n p i p e . The first candidate was U . G . Lybooth whose every command w a s to be obeyed explicitly. On Saturday 31st May, p r o b a b l y the best IC 1 s t X I this s e a s o n batted m i s e r a b l y on a fast wicket at Churchill, C a m b r i d g e a n d w e r e a l l out for 8 8 (yet a g a i n ) . H o w e v e r a n e x c e l l e n t b o w l i n g performance by the medium paced b o w l e r kept Churchill w i t h i n our meagre t o t a l and w e r e a l l out for 69 ( J . B a s h a r 5-20). T h e s e a s o n s o far h a s been c h a r a c t e r i s e d by poor b a t t i n g , giving wickets away and dropped c a t c h e s . The w i c k e t s have been l o s t by i m p a t i e n c e to s c o r e r u n s , e s p e c i a l l y to ostensibly g e n t l e b o w l i n g and the c a t c h e s h a v e been dropped due to l a c k of c o n c e n t r a t i o n .
