t I suppose the basic aim of this weekly feature is really to help you spend your grant as auickly as possible without really trying. This column will primarily be concerned with the goings-on at this and neighbouring colleges, together with reflections on various extravaganzas in London that you, the impoverished student can afford. On the whole it will deal with music, theatre and films, particularly those events which happen at IC.

The Freshers F i r s t F l i n g — your very own concert — i s now at fruition. T h i s year it is being run by R C S U (the Royal College of Science Union). Although the concert is not a new venture for R C S j who can boast L e d Zeppelin and Queen (to name but a few Billion) as past performers, it i s the first time that the Freshers concert has been organised by us." The concert is in the Great H a l l and starts around 8pm.Tickets are extra cheap at £1." Anyway, here i s a rundown on the performers appearing in the concert.

City Boy's Steve Broughton and Lol Mason

Hailing from Brum, City Boy have built up immense following all over the country, although London has proved the most difficult area to crack since they turned professional 18 months ago (even the United States have not been as hard as London!!). However, had they not made the grade and convinced their record company, Phonogram, of their ability to become a musical force, they might still be called Back In The Band. Originally a four piece acoustic band in the folk-harmony vein, they became disillusioned with their line-up which was restricting the development of their breed of songs. So, in came Roger 'Barley' Kent on drums and percussion along with lead guitarist Mike Slamer — both from local bands; Chris Dunn moved over to electric bass, whilst Max Thomas quit his lead acoustic for the more adventurous keyboards. Since then, with the change of name and musical outlook, City Boy have grown in stature alarmingly quickly.

CITY BOY With one album and three singles already behind them — the last one, 'Hap-Ki-Do Kid', even making Top of the Pops, it may seem worrying to some that the honours haven't quite rolled their way. Not for City Boy. They know they will eventually hit the big-time and, without being bigheaded, they are right. Just listen to the quality of the songs on their first album, simply called 'City Boy' (Vertigo 6360 126). Such masterpieces as "Oddball Dance", "Surgery Hours", "Hap-Ki-Do Kid" and Boulevard" the incomparable "Sunset

are all to be found therein— it doesn't seem right that one album should contain so many classics. The rest of the album is every bit as good; "5,000 Years/ Don't Know Can't Tell" kicks off side 2 and "Haymaking Time", 'Deadly Delicious' and "Shake My Head And

Leave"complet the line-up.

City Boy's polished stage-act will delight and enthrall you — if not just grab you by the balls and grip you with frenzied excitement, depending on your mood of the moment. In fact, the current act is even better than their last tour, with more of the newer numbers creeping in alongside some refurbished standards. Songs from their forthcoming album "Dinner At The Ritz"

(due

for release

in the new year) will definitely be featured. Hopefully they will be able to perform the enchanting "Fi'o/iV'alongside the title track — complete with Wizard-ofOz atmosphere — as well as "Narcissus" and "Goodbye

Blue Monday". The last

number is one "hell" of a track. On the night, of course, it is all down to the Boys, who are: Steve Broughton (22) : v o c a l s , harmonies, rhythm guitar, occasional percussion and Top HaL L o l l Mason (26) : vocals, harmonies and and tambourine.

Well, that's City Boy. Needless to say that nothing would happen without their manager, Rene Sauter, or their hard working road crew of Wilf (call me Toby), Dave and the rest of the gang. No-one ever mentions them, so I thought I'd set the record straight by doing so here.

One of the best things to emerge from this concert has been the willingness to assist on the part of many upperechelon personages, not the least being that talented singer-songwriter Phillip Goodhand-Tait. Having just completed a highly successful whistle-stop tour with Strawbs and with his first single on Chrysalis - "Oceans Away" KCHS 2100) — receiving regular airplay, it is with great pleasure that we welcome Phillip as our special guest to this concert. Copies of the album and single will be given away as prizes in a silly free raffle during the concert.

I can't finish the rundown on the concert without mentioning our compere for the evening — Radio London's Andy Finney. Andy is definitely no stranger to IC, having studied here a few years ago. At the time, he was highly involved with STOIC, the student television service, and was also to be heard muttering, on occasions, the words IC Radio... What with a spell on Radio l's 'Sounds Of The 70's', due to Whispering Bob being away at the time, and his new post at Kensington House involving Overseas' broadcasts — not to mention his regular'Friday evening stint, Single File, on Radio London — we are fortunate indeed to lure him away for the evening. 'Can I have My

It certainly bodes well for the future. Joanna looks like being onto a winner with a single 7 Live For The City' on DJM Records already behind her. Not that she hasn't smelt success before the Jasper Carrott tour helped her there, and she has also been featured in HTV's series "Sweet Somerset" over the summer.
