E x - R C S U Presiden t Steve Brightman escaped unhurt w h e n h i s c a r c r a s h e d into t h e Mechanical Engineering building last F r i d a y night. The a c c i d e n t happened at around 11.30pm, w h e n Mr Brightman's yellow Dolomite S p r i n t w a s t r a v e l l i n g from t h e Sherfield Building towards Mechanical Engineering. The c a r f a i l e d to n e g o t i a t e the r i g h t hand bend at M e c h E n g .

E s t i m a t e s vary greatly as to the c o s t o f the damage t o the car a n d b u i l d i n g .
Mines President Paul Kurowski this week refused to streak around the Albert Hall to raise Rag funds. He said it lowers the. lowers the image of RSM. Perhaps some others, who could raise the standard should accompany him.
Procession on despite squabbles
Rag off? -No way! This year's Rag Procession is to go ahead as announced in last week's FELIX. This was agreed, after much intraCCU squabling and petty recriminations, at a Carnival Committee meeting on Wednesday evening. The Procession will be waved off by the Rector and Lady Flowers tomorrow morning. Although an affirmative d e c i s i o n w a s r e a c h e d , at one s t a g e a s e c t i o n o f the m e e t i n g almost swung o p i n i o n to the contrary.

John Kearns, last year's Rag Chairman, answered her by p o i n t i n g out that Q u e e n E l i z a b e t h C o l l e g e , only h a d three l o r r i e s o n t h e i r (very successful) Rag Procession last year.
RCS Rag totals up RCS Union this week s u r p a s s e d their last year's t o t a l f o r money c o l l e c t e d for R a g . They did so whilst selling R a g M a g s to those o n W e d n e s d a y ' s N U S / T U C ' F i g h t the C u t s ' march. R C S U h a v e now c o l l e c t e d £1,583 f o r R a g t h i s y e a r , £ 8 0 greater than l a s t y e a r ' s t o t a l . £100 of the t o t a l came from R a g M a g s a l e s on W e d n e s d a y . T h e march w a s the b i g g e s t industrial demonstration in London i n recent times. Over 40,000 people attended, i n c l u d i n g some 35 o r s o from IC Union. Demonstrators
r e a c t e d q u i t e w e l l to the R a g Mag s e l l e r s , although ex-IC President Trevor Phillips j e s t e d 'Why don't you come into line with the rest of us'.
Mascots The University College m a s c o t P h i n e a s w a s returned by G u i l d s t o U C a t t h e C & G U bar night o n S u n d a y . T h e mascot was transferred at a b o u t 10pm, a l t h o u g h U C s t u d e n t s a r r i v e d at the U n i o n bar by 8pm. T h e y j o i n e d , but wer e u n s u c c e s s f u l , i n the G u i l d s bar n i g h t f e s t i v i t i e s .

The R C S U disappointment w a s h e i g h t e n e d s i n c e they have gone to great l e n g t h s t o obtain float that l e d the Lord Mayor's P r o c e s s i o n last Saturday. This features a lar g e r o b i n , a momento to S i r R o b i n G i l l e t the n e w L o r d Mayor. R C S U later urged e v e r y o n e to get a s many v e h i c l e s a n d people a s possible dressed up a n d out o n t h e P r o c e s s i o n . The meeting began' degendue to lack of erating, p o s i t i v e c h a i r i n g by M a r t i n J u d k i n s , the R a g C h a i r m a n . It took a r a l l y i n g c a l l o f 'Let's do the best with what we've got' by J o h n W h i t e , I C U H o n S e c , to r e s t o r e order to t h e m e e t i n g a n d s y m p a t h y to t h i s y e a r ' s P r o c e s s i o n arrangements.

I rang the N E R C , at t h e i r r e q u e s t , t o g i v e them t h i s f i g u r e and took the opportunity t o a s k t h e i r v i e w s on t h i s matter.

N U S T r a v e l ( N U S T ) have h a d c o n t s i d e r a b l e d i f f i c u l t i e s over t h e last f e w y e a r s , e s s e n t i a l l y d u e to a l a c k of c a p i t a l . L a s t y e a r _they lost a l m o s t £300,00 0 (on a £6.5M turnover) and a r e s e t to l o s e o v e r £100,00 0 t h i s y e a r . D r a s t i c e c o n o m i e s and other m e a s u r e s h a v e h a d t o be i n t r o d u c e d t o c o m b a t these losses, v i z 35 redundancies and the i n t r o d u c t i o n of a new top managment team. Social needs first A c a l l for a r e v o l u t i o n i n Government economic thinking w a s made a t T u e s d a y ' s S o c i a l ist Society meeting. T o m Litteric M P proposed a r e v i v a l o f the a l l o c a t i o n o f investment resources a c c o r d i n g to s o c i a l n e e d s ; h e r e j e c t e d the current trend, where 'the prices of consumer goods are determined by the capitalistic egoes of a few selfish elements. He thought that the u s e o f o l d m e t h o d s t o c o n t a i n unemployment a n d p r i c e s w a s p o i n t l e s s a s they h a d not * w o r k e d i n the p a s t . H e c a l l e d for the s o c i a l i s a t i o n of the "big f e w " w h o h a v e the power to control Britain's e x t e r n a l trade to s u i t t h e i r w h i m , s o that t h e y s h o u l d be accountable for their a c t i o n s to the p u b l i c .

Friday - Guilds Carnival Always one of the highlights of IC Rag Week is the Guilds A l l Night Carnival, this year scheduled for Friday, 26th November. Last year's extravaganza featured the whimsical talents of the drunken V i v Stanshall, Rodger Ruskin Spear and A n d y 'Thunderclap' Newman. This year the Guilds Ents Committee have chosen a line-up of artists that give the event a more rock oriented feel. Headlining the bill will be top Welsh band Sassafras. After gigging up and down the country at clubs, colleges and supporting major rock acts at top venues, the band have now earned a strong, healthy following. T h e present line-up is Terry Bennett, Ricky John Holt, Dai Shell, Ralph Evans and Bob 'Congo' Jones. T h e y have maintained their base in Cardiff where they began with Dai and Ralph — a long-standing guitar playing partnership — who teamed up with bass player R i c k y J o h n and former Love Sculpture drummer Congo Jones. T h e y worked for a year, split up, and then reformed in ' 7 3 , adding Bennett to their line-up. Although basically a hard-hitting rock band, Sassafras have been influenced by the West Coast sound, and distinct references to the country bands like the Burritos and Eagles can be heard in their music. Certainly a band that y o u shouldn't miss. Supporting Sassafras will be folk singer Alan White and rock band the Foster Brothers. I must admit I know little of the talents of M r . White. However, I can tell y o u that the Foster Brothers are a raunchy goodtime band, that have been playing the L o n d o n pub circuit for a long time under the name of Blitz. T h e y are now concentrating more on Colleges and small halls. There will also be a disco on throughout the evening. As a contrast to the live music, two films will be shown during the evening. T h e y are the brilliant 'Loot', and the much acclaimed Take the Money and Run', both of which should prove excellent entertainment. T o round things off, food will be provided throughout the evening and most important of all the U n i o n Bar and Lounge will be serving drink until 3 a.m.! A l l this and more can be enjoyed at the very reasonable price of £ 1 . 9 0 in advance (from C & G U n i o n Office) or £ 2 . 2 0 on the door. Everyone is welcome to join in the festivities, so why not go along and enjoy yourselves.
Thursday - Smoking Concert
L o c k up your daughters, 'cause this Thursday sees the annual R C S Smoking Concert. In blunt terms it is 'a smutty version o f what a college revue should be' (John White) i.e. 3 hours of filth, obscenity and bawdy wit(?). In fact it is so good that even Miners and Guildspersons pay 50p to get in. So much for the promo; I can't tell y o u much more 'cause the bulk of the sketches are written the night before, a fact that greatly enhances the literary content of the show. As you will have gathered from the graphic pictures in the R C S Handbook(?), Smoking Concert is the students' chance to get their own back on the lecturers, throw mud at the Executive (all 4 of them?—Ed) and relieve thier sexual frustrations. If y o u are in R C S then act in your year sketch, it's great fun and a free barrel goes to the winners. If y o u are in Mines or Guilds then come and watch y o u own execs., in their guest sketches. (Quite honestly — I think you'll — Mines and Guilds that is — be more turned on by the stripper or drag artist . . . depending on your fancy of course!) Steve Braund

Rag week is nearly upon us again. This is the one week in the year when you can forget about the lectures and problem sheets (if you haven't already) and indulge in some never to be forgotten experiences. So make the most of it! It would be unfair to say Rag week is characterised by the frequency with which people take their clothes off but if the trends set last year continue — unlikely since Paul Korowski's cancelled his streak — we could be in tor some interesting sights. Have a good time, spend lots of money (please) and remember its all iq aid of Cancer Research and Kensington Emperors Swimming Pool for the Disabled.

' I h a v e n e v e r s e e n s o many p e o p l e in my l i f e , e v e r y b o d y c h e e r ing a n d w a v i n g . It w a s a n a m a z i n g s i g h t , e s p e c i a l l y w i t h a l l the kids there. J e z (Mark II) a n d B o both got e x c e l l e n t r e c e p t i o n s due to the s t u d e n t s t r y i n g to get the c r o w d i n v o l v e d i n the s h o w rather than just standing watching.^ _ As we come up to St Paul's, Bo' suffered a blow-out (leaving a three-quarter inch hole in a tyre, which will cost about £50 to repair) and was unable to continue in the procession. J u s t after that N i c k G i l let (son of the new L o r d M a y o r a n d our o w n R C S T V star) managed to get i n t e r v i e w e d by the B B C . Dastardly tactics take IC to top Medhurst 0 IC 1 A 3-phase plan was the Captain's latest idea for overwhelming the opposition when IC travelled to Medhurst to play the league leaders. The first stage was to send the forwards o f f i n one car with scant directions to the venue, and take the rest o f the team i n the minivan. This resulted with the game starting 10 minutes before the forwards arrived. This lead o n to stage t w o o f his dastardly plot: tire out the opposition b y getting his players to hit the ball in random fashion all over the field and leave the opposition to fetch it. O n to stage 3 : The opposition were already disheartened b y their inability to penetrate seven men and were rocked further back c n their heels as a further four players arrived. .However, after some initial tottering, Medhurst regained their balance and began to play like the league leaders they were. They attacked with gusto, using the breadth o f the field, but the IC defence played well and all their scoring chances were thwarted b y demon play from Charlie Brown in goal. Between these bouts o f pressure the forwards were not only admiring the abilities o f the de-

Though little publicised, Imperial C o l l e g e Boat C l u b i s one of the C o l l e g e ' s most s u c c e s s f u l clubs with a long string of v i c t o r i e s a t a l l l e v e l s to i t s name. L a s t year w e won 20 events in V D I ' s , IV's and s c u l l s . We p u t t w o c r e w s i n for H e n l e y R o y a l R e g a t t a ( i n July), a n d set a new IC r e c o r d b y l o s i n g o n l y to the eventual victors, Harvard (in the T h a m e s C u p c o m p e t i t i o n ) . We are c u r r e n t l y r u n n i n g t w o V I U s and a lightweight I V . T h e s e l e c t i o n f o r 1st a n d 2 n d V I I I s h a s n o t y e t b e e n made a n d if a n y oarsmen, w h o haven't c o m e d o w n y e t , w o u l d l i k e to on a W e d n e s d a y o r Sat urda y a f t e r n o o n they w i l l be more than w e l c o m e .
