Tim Hillyer investigates the likely outcome of mining Harlington, the College sports ground
£1m BOOST FOR STUDENT RESIDENCE The sand and gravel deposits under the College Sports Ground at Harlington are now certain to be exploited during the eighties. When first discussed in FELIX No 547 (Friday 7th March), the question of extracting the minerals from the college land was treated coolly by Sherfield administration; but negotiations have now reached an advanced stage and planning permission seems to be a formality. With regard to the lights in the Union Gents loos, I sent in a defect report on 19 A u g u s t , followed by another stressing the urgency of the matter, on 25th September. That morning I also talked to the electrician who promised he'd do it that afternoon. I talked to them again this morning and they said they'd come over after tea, so, I hope they're fixed by the time you're reading this'.

Contrary to the Editor's remark on generosity in Freshers' FELIX, most people have managed to donate £1 and for this we are truly thankful. At time of writing (Tuesday morning) the fund has t o p p e d £ 5 0 0 ; so thanks ever so much and keep it rolling in.

S o m e years previous to Tor r an c e's arrival a horrific murder was committed there by a caretaker called G r a d y , who brutally slaughtered his wife and daughters with a n axe. T o r r a n c e smiles broadly when informed of this — no need to w o r r y about anything like that with h i m , he says. J a c k is accompanied by his wife W e n d y ( S h e l l e y D u v a l l ) a n d s o n D a n n y , w h o is a p p a r e n t l y p o s s e s s e d of a p o w e r d u b b e d 'shining' (hence the title), w h i c h is some form of p s y c h i c a b i l i t y a l l o w i n g h i m t o b r i e f l y glimpse the future and past. The Special Edition of
Close Encounters
of the Third Kind
This film is well w o r t h a s e c o n d viewing, if only to reinforce its position as a classic of the genre. T h e re-editing and re-shooting of some scenes has m u c h enhanced the whole. S o m e inclusions are obvious, the discovery of a s h i p i n the G o b i D e s s e r t for o n e . H o w e v e r , the m u c h less obvious changes in the h o m e life of the character played by R i c h a r d Dreyfuss are the key. In the original the post-Watergate difficulty in coming to terms with authority caused these scenes to lack a certain credibility. Instead Dreyfuss is seen as a m a n who has retained a sense of wondering innocence (his championing of the film Pinnochio) and finds himself looking for more in life — open to suggestion from above, when he sees the U F O s , which he unquestionably accepts as real. H i s family with w h o m he is unable to communicate suggest the ' G r o w n U p s ' in Peter Pan in their mentality. But he rises above self-doubt t h r o u g h a. p e r i o d of s u f f e r i n g , his f a m i l y becoming superfluous after he finds that his mountain exists. T h e other visible change is the inclusion
of D r e y f u s s a s c e n d i n g i n t o t h e a l i e n starship, here Spielberg uses the song W i s h Upon A Star to reflect almost a magical atmosphere. It c a n be argued that this, is best left to one's imagination; it is certainly imagination that makes the initial scene of the toys becoming alive so horrifying. T h e final message of some greater power first scrutinising and then redeeming E a r t h , has a ready following, as Chariot of the Gods has shown. Indeed the basic idea of the plot: of a m a n being chosen; the why-me feeling of inadequacy; the final movement to some spiritual serenity could easily b e c o m e ridiculous on the screen, except that hope is in demand when the spectre of war and uncertainty rises. T h u s one is left with a film t h a t o w e s as m u c h to W a l t D i s n e y ' s animated classics of the '30s a n d '40s as it d o e s t o t h e p r e c o c i o u s t a l e n t s of i t s d i r e c t o r , S t e p h e n S p i e l b e r g . Its s t a r s probably ought to reflect that, along with those banes of the acting world: animals and children, they ought not to act with spaceships. Stephen Goulder

I think that we c o u l d have been treated to many more ingenious twists in the plot. N e v e r t h e l e s s , a s it s t a n d s t h e f i l m is beautiful, horrific at times a n d certainly the best horror feature of recent years. classix nouveaux I must congratulate E N T S o n p r o d u c i n g a great freshers' gig. T h e support, T i m e Flies, started slowly but grew o n me. Quite enjoyable, but still pretty average. A large audience were blinded as C l a s s i x N o u v e a u x turned the white lights o n t h e m for their intro. T h e lights faded a n d they began their set. I had never seen C l a s s i x before and I was impressed; especially by Sal Solo, the vocalist. All work and no play makes Jack an IC student, so break out and exercise your right to be 'fun to be with". I am sure that many closet funny people are s c a r e d of being persecuted for their perverse attitude to life. A sense of humour is nothing to be ashamed of! Flaunt it! Stand proud and join Jest A Minute. If your not into the fun scene you don't have to wear the red nose or floppy boots, but merely exercise your humour in a locked room between consenting adults. Thus, gaining confidence in your right to be funny, you might try a quick 'gag' in the bar and thence onto 'pranks' all over college. If you are interested in joining our m o v e m e n t , or h e l p i n g o t h e r s to realise their identity as funny people contact us via Box No 1, FELIX Office. Lots of love.
