THE FRESHERS' Concert on Saturday, October 11, made a loss of approximately £500. The maximum estimate of the audience was about forty, though the headline band, No Dice, brought a guest list of twelve. Significantly more than half the IC students present at the gig walked out after Nigel Mazlyn-Jones finished. Only nine people had paid their £2 to enter by 8:00pm. John Passmore, the man responsible, was In the Union Bar at the time. When asked what could be done about the low attendance, he answered: "I don't know what to do ... I think I'll resign".

Freshers' Fair Y o u may have thought you'd heard the last of this (I certainly did!), but unfortunately a table belonging to D r C Halls, the Warden of Beit Hall disappeared from the B o t / Z o o C o m m o n R o o m during the event. It is a large, metalframe table with a veneered wooden top, so if a n y o n e h a s s e e n s u c h a t a b l e w h i c h has suddenly appeared from nowhere, please inform me or D r Halls as soon as possible.
Calling All
By J. Passmore Residence I have had so many complaints from one thing to another on residence, mainly regarding nonr e p a y m e n t of d e p o s i t s , d e s e r v i n g c a s e s not getting into H a l l a n d the small q u e s t i o n of Robert Pryor H o u s e at 53 Princes G a r d e n s as well as staff living in student residences that somewhere questions must be asked and asked s o o n . S o if a n y o n e e l s e h a s a n y m a j o r complaints on residence could they please get in touch with me so that I can add to the file, and go to see College and try to fix things up.
Greek Students A s you may know, Greece joins the E E C on J a n u a r y 1, 1981. H o w e v e r , G r e e k s t u d e n t s starting at College now will be charged 'full cost' fees although E E C students are regarded as h o m e s t u d e n t s for fee p u r p o s e s . W h a t the G r e e k students would like is to pay full fees up until January 1, 1981 and home fees from then. However this is not yet the case and there will be a motion at C o u n c i l and at the U G M asking College to charge the new G r e e k students at the home rate. Until Registry produce actual student numbers then it will be impossible to estimate the amount of money involved. I would like all G r e e k students to organise effectively and hope to do so through Hellenic Society so that we can work in a co-ordinated fashion.
UGM T h e next U G M is on Tuesday, October 28. The deadline for motions is Tuesday, October 21 at 5:30pm.
Suggestions & Complaints T h e r e w a s a m e e t i n g of S u g g e s t i o n s a n d C o m p l a i n t s on T h u r s d a y , O c t o b e r 9 w h i c h produced nothing of great note. D o not forget that the Suggestions and Complaints boxes are available in al! outlets and are the most effective means of changing or improving the Refectory Service.
No
Dice
I must say that I accept full responsibility for the N o D i c e c o n c e r t . It was due to a lack of communication on my part and I would like to apologise to all those who worked on it or were concerned with it.
Clubs And
Societies
A n y o ne owning any storage space in the Union B u i l d i n g , c a n I please have details of e v e r y cupboard, locker or filing cabinet, where it is and what it's used for. T h e n (hopefully) I can sort out some of the anomalies, and put the storage facilities to their fullest use. A n y club buying equipment, regalia, stationery, or indeed anything at all, please remember we are members of the Students Union Purchasing Consortium and thus can get hefty discounts with many firms. So, before you buy anything come and check out my files, as you may be able to get a better deal through the Consortium.
Amusement Machines These seem to be doing very well, but as I don't play on them myself, I'll have to rely on your views as to how good they are. So please come and tell me which pinball or video machine you prefer, if you have any ideas or new machines, or perhaps you think the queues are too long and think we should get even more! I'll look forward to hearing from you.
C&G T O M O R R O W a large group of intrepid, brave, m a s o c h i s t i c G u i l d s m e n will d e s c e n t o n P o r t o b e l l o R o a d , to e x p l o i t t h e s a d i s t i c tendencies of the general public. T h e idea is to sell s h a v i n g f o a m ' p i e s ' , at a vast p r o f i t , to unsuspecting passers-by who then (the fools) waste the pies by decorating the vendors' face with them. This stunt has only been unleashed on the public once before (by us, anyway) and made quite a bit of money for charity. So for something a bit 'different', meet in the Guilds O f f i c e t o m o r r o w ( S a t u r d a y , O c t o b e r 18) at 9:30am. T h e n , on Monday (October 20), is the Civ Eng Freshers' Dinner. If you haven't got your ticket yet, you might be too late, so dash off to the Guilds Office straight away. The following day (Tuesday, 21) there will be a T h e a t r e T r i p to see Ibsen's Wild Duck, starring Richard Briers and Nerys Hughes, at the Lyric Theatre, Hammersmith. Only thirty tickets are available and are selling fast at only £2.25 each. There might be one or two left, if you're lucky, in the Union Office. See
you at 'Hit Squad'.
Rae
Lizzie's Wee Bit A F T E R the hectic start to term and the first lot of parking permits being allocated, life is settling into a very pleasant routine. However, there are several points I'd like to make. T h e c l o s i n g date for a p p e a l s for p a r k i n g p l a c e s is F R I D A Y , O C T O B E R 17 with the r e s u l t s b e i n g p r i n t e d in F E L I X o n F r i d a y , October 24. A n y permit which has not been c o l l e c t e d f r o m the U n i o n Office by F r i d a y , October 31 will be reallocated. At the time of writing I am about to hold my second duplicating demonstration. A n y person who attended demonstrations last year must not assume that they will be allowed to have use of the gestetners this year. All publicity officers or secretaries must attend a d e m o n s t r a t i o n . Should you have been unable to attend the demonstrations please come and see me. A s far as insurance is concerned all the new head tenancy schemes run by College and the U n i o n have b e e n i n c l u d e d o n the H a l l s of Residence policy. The £4 premium will be added to your first rent bill of the year. Again I will ask all clubs and societies to bring me an up-to-date list of their property or equipment so I can add them to the G r o u p Policy. If a c l u b / s o c i e t y holds their own policy please bring me a copy, with the intention of me trying to include it in the G r o u p Policy. All for now. jjfli
O n c e more into the breach dear friends and another F E L I X is with us again. Tonight sees the last of the Freshers' Dinners, the infamous Life Sci Dinner, with party afterwards. A n y o n e who has been to any of the other dinners can go the party — it should be good. Hopefully the dinner will be as excellent as the rest have been. T o let you recover after the party there is no Rag stunt tomorrow. Last week's stunt brought thirty-odd (very odd) clowns out on to the streets of Knightsbridge. Unfortunately Multiple Sclerosis were also out collecting so the total was only £173.46'/2- T o p collector of the day was Rick Jones of Maths 1 w i t h £23.9772 w h i c h i n c l u d e d a £ 1 0 n o t e ! Nevertheless an enjoyable time was had by all and most people managed to get a ride on J e z . T h e next collection is on Saturday, O c t o b e r 25, a n d is the alternative stunt w h i c h the President and H o n Sec organise. W a t ch out for details. Ents nights out have been well attended and more are in the pipeline, the Ents Chairman says, so look out for the posters. A h w e l l , t h a t ' s t h e e n d of t h i s w e e k ' s smasheroonie, so it's back to the lab/Union Office/bar/bed. PJ
Matters Raised Noise After having tea with two ladies from Ennismore Gardens, who are sick to death of the noise made by residents in the Princes Gardens Halls, I'm sure I'd get just as annoyed hearing several hundred record players blasting, people hanging out of the windows shouting, etc. So P L E A S E show some consideration, such as closing your windows when playing music, turning it down after 11:00pm, and generally trying to be less noisy.

Reviews Films PLEPHANT T H E G R E A T N E S S of a film is very difficult to d i s c e r n . T h i s f i l m , is h o w e v e r , an e x t r e m e l y different film that e l i c i t e d spontaneous applause as the credits finished. As those who have read the book True History of the Elephant Man will realise it follows the final years in the life of Joseph (John) M e r r i c k who suffered from the congenital and malignant condition neurofibromatosis. He is discovered by Frederick Treves (Anthony Hopkins) in a freak show under the contol of Bytes (Freddie Jones). It

is here explained that the elephant man is the result of his mother being struck down by an African elephant at a Leicester fair. This explains the opening dream sequence with its savage overtones. He is brought to the L o n d o n Hospital where his grotesque deformities are shown to a pathological society meeting. T h e d r a m a e x p l o r e s the unfolding of M e r r i c k ' s (John Hurt) character through meetings with the famous and infamous.
La Derobade L A D E R O B A D E is the story of a prostitute; her life and her work. If it has a m o r a l , it is to reveal the injustices experienced by the girls working for pimps. It is a French film set in Paris. There are English subtitles, but this does not affect your viewing, as there is little talking. Marie Mage ( M i o u - M i o u is her real name!), a pretty, innocent, nineteen year old, meets a handsome, flashy guy in a cafe by the name of Gege (Daniel Duval). She is fascinated by him and they fall in love. One morning, in bed, he tells her that he wants her to work for him as a prostitute; he will be her pimp.

arrives at the London Hospital to be examined by Mr
The claim to follow the true story is moreor-less false; the writers and director have produced a fable. This fable is centred upon the truely noble character of Merrick; he is seen to ennoble those around him, questioning the very root of Victorian hypocrisy. Its attitudes are revealed in the scene between the noted actress, Madge Kendal (Anne Bancroft) and Merrick when they read from Romeo and Juliet, she sees Merrick personifying, in spirit, the romantic hero (yet fated to remain celibate). Many of the most moving scenes are those when he speaks the lines that Merrick is known to have said; these scenes which appear to be over dramatic (the vanity case scene) are shown to be doubly tragic. John Hurt is unrecognisable both vocally and visibly by stunningly accurate make-up. His performance conveys all the pathos and sincerity of Merrick and is a just homage to a great man. In support, John Gielgud (as Carr Gomm, Chairman of the Hospital Committee) and Freddie Jones are excellent. Freddie Jones, in particular, giving the wholly fictitious Bytes sinister solidity when the script could have left him as merely a caricature.
She dislikes the idea, but accepts. She is repulsed, initially, but soon gets used to 'the life'. As the relationships and injustices evolve we are taken through the tricks of the trade until the story comes to an anticlimactic end. (Well, you've got to have some balance!) I was pleasantly surprised by the film. It threatened to be just another cheap 'sex and violence' X, but all the action in the bedroom was relevant and the characters sensitively portrayed. What violence there was was necessary to the story. The French have a strange, sensual quality to their films which makes them worthwhile in themselves. If you like films about people, then I'd although it is not recommend La Derobade, in the 'erotic' class of Emmanuelle. Running time: 114 minutes. M Cadwallader

Treves.
The film itself is shot in black and white in gloomy sets representing the period acc u r a t e l y . T h e m u s i c is s e c o n d a r y but supports dramatic scenes with evocative subtlety. The closing scenes of Merrick at the theatre reveal that he is just as much an exhibit as ever. Yet his naivety allows him only to give the theatre audience the best of motives. That evening he finishes his model of St Phillips Cathedral, the spire of which is the only part he has ever seen from his w i n d o w . He then fulfils his d e s i r e for normality by sleeping in the prone position (his deformities permitting sleep only in the sitting position). This act of suicide is the supreme act of dignity, the only decision he can freely take. The film is a brilliant homage to a great man. I would earnestly recommend it to anyone reading this review. Its supreme tragedy is the very existence of Merrick in the 19th Century. One is left to speculate whether he would be better cared for now or would he remain an outcast left to cry: "I am * not an animal, I am a human being". Stephen

The Long Riders T H E JESSE J A M E S gang: Frank and Jesse James, Cole, Jim and Bob Younger, and Ed and Clell Miller, are generally regarded as being 'the greatest outlaws that ever lived'. During the fifteen years that they evaded capture, they robbed at least a dozen banks, and as many stagecoaches and trains. Their first raid was on Liberty, Missouri in 1866, just after the end of the Civil War, and the gang was not finally broken up until after their bloody raid on the First National Bank of Northfield, Minnesota, when Frank and Jesse abandoned the other members of the gang, all of whom had serious gunshot wounds, to capture, and sentences of life
imprisonment. Jesse James was eventually shot dead in his own home by his cousin Bob Ford (who later collected a $10,000 reward) in 1882, but Frank James lived on into old age, having turned himself in, been tried and acquitted. Directed by Walter Hill (with the Carradine brothers cast as the Youngers) this film lacks the vitality of his p r e v i o u s w o r k The Warriors, its downbeat tempo and gloomy photography emphasising the inevitability of the gang's final destruction. Sadly, one and ai half hours of this becomes claustrophobic, excessive use of slow-motion in the Northfield raid merely adding to the tedium. S Hodgson
long lost uncle/father. It's enough to make you throw up. The director, Randal Kleiser, must take the blame for the films t e d i u m . A film destined for success, it has everything the public seems to want, it is escapist, it is contrived, unrealistic, it is dull, and it has people (to quote the pre-release publicity) "swimming naked over coral reefs". 1 found it the most tedious two hours of my life, or certainly of the last two years. Last Week's Issue As you must have realised by now, the ruse about the folding machine breaking down was merely an excuse to attempt to smash the record for the largest FELIX collation staff. If you enjoyed yourself last week, why not come in every Thursday night for even more fun. Well done, we're all very pleased with y o u . . . and not a single letter of complaint!
Erratum We made a boo-boo on the calendar last week. The Caravan E N T S gig should have been on November 16, not November 9.
P u z z l e
The Man Responsible I asked John Passmore what he felt about his F r e s h e r s ' Ball; he said he could say nothing but that he was sorry. He said the same at Union Council on Monday and in today's 'Preversions' column. I was most surprised that the matter was treated so lightly at Council. While it is all well and good for John to 'do the decent thing' and apologise for his cock-up, I feel that this can be no excuse. Mr Passmore has just t h r o w n F I V E H U N D R E D P O U N D S worth of Union money down the drain (PG Group, for instance, have only this amount allocated for the entire year); D O E S N ' T A N Y O N E MIND? Naughty N u m b e r s Wodge has been applying logic to the problem of obscene telephone calls, and developed what he calls his 'system'. Last week he explained it to me, with his customary enthusiasm. "Take your telephone number, for instance: 57388," he said, waving his hands about. " Y o u arrange the digits first in descending then ascending order and subtract the two, giving a new five digit number. In your case this is 88753 minus 35788, that is 52965." "How does this fit in with obscene phone calls?" I asked. "Well, obviously, it's very beneficial for an obscene phone caller to receive obscene calls himself." " O r herself," I put in, trying not to sound flippant. Wodge gave me a pained look and continued. "Provided we can persuade all obscene phone callers to scramble their telephone numbers in the way I've just explained, and then make all their calls to the number they get by this process, and provided all these obscene phoners have suitable telephone numbers in the first place, they will each receive highly therapeutic lewdness from one of the others in the network." "Ingenious, but it has a drawback," I remarked, after some thought. ' "Even in a town like this where telephone numbers are five digits long, and may start with an 0, the number of obscene phone callers on your " system will be at most How many? Solutions, comments and criticisms to me c / o FELIX Office by Tuesday noon, please. FELIX has generously donated a small prize for the first correct solution opened on Tuesday afternoon. There was a prize last week, too, but true to form, the Editor forgot to mention this. Congratulations to Ralph Williams, of C h e m 1, who won it. Last Week's Solution A was told that C got a third B was told that A got a second C was told that B got a first D was told that E got a first E was told that F got a thrid F was told that D got a second From what he was told, F can deduce everyone's results. So F was told that either i) E got a first or ii) D got a second or iii) C got a second
his failings; he should write a full report of the incident so that the situation may be avoided in the future. New Feature Y o u will notice inside a n article called "Soapbox". While the letters page offers the opportunity for anyone to express their views, I felt that it would be a good idea to encourage authors to explore their topics more fully than the space constraints of the letters page will allow (i.e. a maximum of one column per letter). So, the ball is in your court, articles should occupy no more than a page and be double spaced. Contributions will not be accepted that merely attempt to contradict a previous article: the letters page is usually sufficient for that. Obviously, inclusion cannot be guaranteed, but articles will be kept over for a future issue, if possible. Thanks
to
Caroline, Patrick, Eric, Dave (3), C o l i n , Johnathon, Len, and all those who've slipped my mind at the moment of writing. P.S. Thanks to Geoff Reason without who's organ ours would not have functioned this week!
Now in case i) there is no information C could have received to enable him to deduce everyone's results. So we can rule out i). Case ii) leads to the correct solution, while (iii) leads to this: A was told that B got a second B was told that D got a third C was told that A got a first D was told that E got a third E was told that F got a third F was told that C got a second which is consistent with the students' deductions, but does not accord with A's comment that he hope he'd done better.
Interesting letter received by the F E L I X Office last week
