A n e w science p a r k is to be d e v e l o p e d i n S o u t h W a l e s . T h e p a r k , situated i n N e w p o r t , w i l l b e d e v e l o p e d jointly b y I m p e r i a l C o l l e g e , the W e l s h D e v e l o p m e n t Agency and Newport Borough Council.

C o n s t r u c t i o n w o r k is e x p e c t e d to start o n the 40 a c r e site this s u m m e r . T h e first phase w i l l i n v o l v e the b u i l d i n g of a ÂŁ2 m i l l i o n t e c h n o l o g y centre, to be c a l l e d ' I m p e r i a l H o u s e ' . T h i s w i l l house hight e c h n o l o g y c o m p a n i e s , a n d is to be managed by Imperial College. Imperial a l r e a d y h a v e e x p e r i e n c e i n m a n a g i n g the s c i e n c e p a r k at the S i l w o o d P a r k outstation.

A l l full-time h o m e students at I m p e r i a l are eligible to a p p l y for t h e student access funds, w h i c h are a G o v e r n m e n t p r o v i s i o n against h a r d s h i p r e s u l t i n g f r o m the w i t h d r a w a l of h o u s i n g a n d o t h e r benefits.

O u r strongest p r o g r a m m i n g , no doubt, is for self-preservation a n d d e a t h a v o i d a n c e . I c a n n o t help b u t The thought of dying does not cheer me up a lot Mostly because this is the only me I've got.

I a m n e v e r sure w h e t h e r the p l u r a l of b r e a k - t h r o u g h is b r e a k - t h r o u g h s or b r e a k s - t h r o u g h , but there have b e e n s e v e r a l in the last few y e a r s , u n d e r the a b o v e h e a d i n g . T h e lads w h o specialise i n the b i g b a n g , the u n i v e r s e a n d e v e r y t h i n g have p r o v e d that if the constants a n d laws of p h y s i c s differed f r o m those w e a c t u a l l y have b y e v e n the tiniest degree, no sentient life c o u l d have e v e r e v o l v e d a n y w h e r e in t h e cosmos. In other w o r d s the u n i v e r s e w o u l d h a v e b e e n u n o b s e r v a b l e , s i n c e there w o u l d h a v e b e e n no one to o b s e r v e it. T h e r e m a y of course be o t h e r , u n o b s e r v a b l e , u n i v e r s e s but w h o is to say?

Is it possible to i m p l y that this is all too m u c h of a c o i n c i d e n c e — t h a t it therefore must 'all be for some p u r p o s e ' — w i t h o u t b e i n g t ho ug h t to have m a d e a religious statement? Not necessarily of the ' b e a r d e d grandfather figure d i s p e n s i n g m i r a c l e s a n d dire r e t r i b u t i o n f r o m a p i n k c l o u d ' v a r i e t y (judging b y w h a t has h a p p e n e d to telephone kiosks in our neighbourhood, d i v i n e r e t r i b u t i o n seems to b e a little t h i n o n the g r o u n d lately; w e w e r e in fact t o ld as m u c h o n t h e highest ecclesiastical a u t h o r i t y w h e n Y o r k c a t h e d r a l was s t r u c k b y l i g h t n i n g not so l o n g ago for w h a t s e e m e d to m e , as a total l a y m a n , v e r y sensible reasons, c o n s i d e r i n g the p r o n o u n c e m e n t s b y the l o c a l rep).

Nonetheless, the p r o b a b i l i t y against it all c o m i n g together b y r a n d o m c h a n c e is truly a s t r o n o m i c a l — a n d that is a p u r e l y m a t h e m a t i c a l statement.

N o w it w o u l d a p p e a r that s o m e religious (well, perhaps not m a i n s t r e a m ) t h i n k e r s have b e e n affected b y these b r o a d v i e w tendencies for s o m e t i m e w i t h o u t b e i n g t u r n e d to p i l l a r s of salt.

T e i l l h a r d de C h a r d i n t ho ug h t the d i r e c t i o n of D a r w i n i a n e v o l u t i o n to lie b r o a d l y in a p r o g r e s s i o n t o w a r d s the attributes of d i v i n i t y . So if y o u h a p p e n to b e l i e v e that m a n ' s r a i s o n d'etre on e a r t h is to p r o v i d e food for silverfish w h o live o n the little bits of s k i n that w e shed

f r o m our b o d i e s , that h y p o t h e s i s w o u l d put p a i d to y o u r c r e e d . U n l e s s , that is, y o u have r e a s o n to b e l i e v e b o t h (a) that silverfish are better able to s u r v i v e a nuclear environmental holocaust than we are a n d (b) that t h e y are c a p a b l e of e v o l v i n g into intelligent b e i n g s w i t h o u t d e v e l o p i n g the t e n d e n c y to e x t e r m i n a t e one a n o t h e r in the process. T h e trouble w i t h silverfish is that at the m o m e n t they do not appear to rate v e r y h i h g l y as po t e nt i al o b s e r v e r s of the u n i v e r s e . I hope 1 a m not d o i n g t h e m a n injustice; like Douglas A d a m s ' s w h i t e m i c e t h e y m i g h t p o s s i b l y be the projections into o u r d i m e n s i o n of pan-galactic mega-intelligent beings, but s o m e h o w 1 d o u b t it. If m a n k i n d w e r e i n d e e d just a r u n g o n the ladder, it m i g h t m a k e m o r e sense to suppose that o u r function is to d e v e l o p artificial i n t e l l i g e n c e as a p o t e n t i a l l y m o r e b e n i g n f o r m of intellect w h i c h c o u l d o b s e r v e the u n i v e r s e w i t h o u t our tendencies to d e s t r o y the p l a n e t . W e have r e c e n t l y m a d e a not u n p r o m i s i n g start in that d i r e c t i o n (certainly t h e P C o n w h i c h this is b e i n g t y p e d seems r a p i d l y to be e v o l v i n g t o w a r d s a m i n d of its own) but it's early d a y s yet.

U n f o r t u n a t e l y w e are p r o g r a m m e d to be altruistic o n behalf of o u r genes rather t h a n intelligence i n general. O u r b r a i n s a p p e a r to have e v o l v e d to k e e p the wolf, not to m e n t i o n o u r p r e d a t o r y n e i g h b o u r s , f r o m the front d o o r a n d because of that w e do not s e e m to be at all that w e l l e q u i p p e d to u n d e r s t a n d w h a t it is a l l about. T h e o n l y t o o l w e h a v e for g r o p i n g t o w a r d s the light is s e v e r e l y bent. It is a bit like a c a t e r p i l l a r t r y i n g to w o r k out that the shortest distance f r o m w h e r e it is o n the g r o u n d to the top of the nearest tree, f r o m w h e r e a h u n g r y b i r d is e y e i n g it, is not i n fact to the b o t t o m of the tree a n d then up the t r u n k . It matters if y o u are a c a t e r p i l l ar if o n l y because, until y o u start p h i l o s o p h i s i n g , the w i n g e d messengers of d e a t h have s u c h an easy time p e r f o r m i n g c a t e r p i l l ar m i r a c l e s b y

H o w e v e r , I a m a bit c o n f u s e d as to w h e t h e r the m e I a m so possessive about is the h a r d w a r e or the software. T h e h a r d w a r e is getting so r e p u l s i v e it h a r d l y seems w o r t h fretting about. Besides, a l l the bits it is m a d e of have b e e n a n d w i l l again be r e c y c l e d , i n due c o u r s e . T h e software, o n the other h a n d , is so t h o r o u g h l y n e t w o r k e d b y w h a t I discuss, read, see o n T V , r e s e a r c h , etc, that I a m not c o n v i n c e d it is just m i n e ; a n y m o r e than are the i n n u m e r a b l e m o l e c u l e s I a m transiently p l a y i n g host to.

I a m g e n e r a l l y a m a z i n g l y p r o n e to label things ' m i n e ' — ' m y c h i l d r e n , m y l a n d ' — p e r h a p s b y some p e r v e r s i o n of the t e r r i t o r i a l instinct. N o d o u b t t h e early c a v e m a n g r u n t e d 'keep a w a y f r o m m y fire' a n d w e still find n o t h i n g preposterous about his i l l u s i o n of p r e s u m i n g to o w n an o x i d a t i o n process c o n s u m i n g stuff that g r e w ! C o u l d I be m a k i n g the s a m e m i s t a k e about ' m y ' consciousness, ' m y ' intelligence? P e r h a p s it's not so m u c h that I h a v e consciousness as that s o m e u n i v e r s a l consciousness has me. A f t e r a l l , I a m definitely m i s g u i d e d i n the w a y I r e g a r d as b e i n g ' m e ' the m o l e c u l e s I h a v e just i n c o r p o r a t e d into m y b o d y w h i c h w e r e a part of y o u r s a little w h i l e ago. W e ought to t r y a n d u n d e r s t a n d h o w M u m N a t u r e w o r k s this t r i c k , e v e n if w e are not g o i n g to g r o o m c o m p u t e r s or silverfish to take over, because the d e l u s i o n e v i d e n t l y causes a lot of misery.

It seems to m e that the t h i n g w h i c h gives us the c o n v i c t i o n of a single T , f r o m cradle to g r a v e is essentially just a m e m o r y c i r c u i t . In the w a y the stuff of w h i c h w e are m a d e c o n t i n u o u s l y passes t h r o u g h us, w h i l e w e r e t a i n a self-similar shape, w e are rather l i k e w a v e s in a sea of matter. B y w a y of a s o m e w h a t inadequate a n a l o g y w h i c h nevertheless helps us to see ourselves f r o m an e x t e r n a l p o i n t of v i e w , c o m p a r e this w i t h a w a v e o n a sea of water. If that h a d a m e m o r y , it w o u l d r e m e m b e r b e i n g b o r n far out at sea, it w o u l d e x p e r i e n c e the passage of time because of its fixed speed of pr o g r e s s i on a n d , e v e n t u a l l y break, 'die' a n d lose its i d e n t i t y o n r e a c h i n g the shore. T o b e c o m e i m m o r t a l a n d timeless, all that is r e q u i r e d is the r e a l i s a t i o n — quite o b v i o u s to a n y u n i n v o l v e d o b s e r v e r — t h a t the w a v e is the water, the

particles of w h i c h do not e v e n t r a v e l a l o n g w i t h it whilst a s s u m i n g its f o r m .

N o w , if the w a v e d i d h a v e a m e m o r y , this r e a l i s a t i o n w o u l d be o u t of its r e a c h .

T h i s is because the m e m o r y must r e c o r d e x p e r i e n c e s of the w a v e f o r m , not of the constituent particles w h o s e histories m a y all be different, if o n l y because so m a n y particles are r e q u i r e d to f o r m a m e m o r y .

H e r e the a n a l o g y w e a r s t h i n because there is no r e a s o n w h y a w a v e s h o u l d have a m e m o r y , w h e r e a s it is essential for the w o r k i n g of the e v o l u t i o n a r y s c h e m e that w e s h o u l d . W i t h o u t it, there w o u l d be no self-awareness a n d the o b v i o u s w a y of e n s u r i n g that a m e c h a n i s m w i l l c o n t i n u e to be selfm a i n t a i n i n g — i n d e e d s e l f - i m p r o v i n g — i s to m a k e it s t r o n g l y egocentric. T h i s w i l l m o t i v a t e it to a v o i d d a m a g e to itself, to fight to k e e p a l i v e its present f o r m a n d to pro-create i n a w a y w h i c h i n v o l v e s the c h o i c e of the fittest (in the b i o l o g i c a l sense) p a r t n e r a v a i l a b l e . T h e difficulty w e have in a c c e p t i n g these c o n c e p t s are built in; our m i n d s are c o n s t r u c t e d so as to suppress e x p e r i e n c e s w h i c h cause us to doubt our self-ness.

T h e ancient E a s t e r n p h i l o s o p h i e s h a v e s o m e a s t o n i s h i n g insights into s u c h matters, all the m o r e r e m a r k a b l e for being obtained b y introspection and in

i g n o r a n c e of c u r r e n t scientific k n o w l e d g e .

Buddhists might r e g a r d the a b o v e r e m a r k s about o w n e r s h i p as little m o r e t h a n c r e a t i v e p l a g i a r i s m f r o m the Buddha's teachings on non-attachment.

A g a i n , w h e n the Y o g i says not 'I a m d y i n g ' but 'I o b s e r v e m y b o d y to be d y i n g ' or, in n o n - t e r m i n a l days, w h e n he attempts to attain the n i r v a n a of p u r e consciousness in m e d i t a t i o n b y b a n i s h i n g his thought a n d s e n s o r y i n p u t s , he is c u l t i v a t i n g the p e r c e p t i o n that 'he is the water, not the w a v e ' a n d h e n c e his i m m o r a l i t y . T h i s ecstatic state c a n n o t be rationalised i n conventional evolutionary useful values, u n l i k e the e u p h o r i a i n d u c e d b y the a q u i s i t i o n of a n e w car, for e x a m p l e . It appears to be m o r e l i k e the elation i n d u c e d b y a beautiful sunset w h i c h appears e q u a l l y pointless in utilitarian t e r m s .

H o w e v e r , w e do n o w have the b e g i n n i n g of a m o v e m e n t w h i c h cares for the e n v i r o n m e n t in the l o n g e r t e r m a n d , after all, w h a t c o u l d b e m o r e selfish t han s e e k i n g p e r s o n a l e n l i g h t e n m e n t ? If o p i n i o n polls are to be b e l i e v e d , Vsrds of the p o p u l a t i o n in a n y case have an innate c o n v i c t i o n r e g a r d i n g s o m e sort of s u r v i v a l after d e a t h a n d the p u r s u i t of i m m o r t a l i t y is a w o n d e r f u l l y e g o c e n t r i c activity. F o r that matter, r e m n a n t s of i n n e r c o n t e n t m e n t e v i d e n t l y c a n be t u r n e d to p r a c t i c a l u s e — l i k e the w i l l i n g n e s s to w o r k e x c e s s i v e h o u r s — j u d g i n g b y the w a y the i n d u s t r i a l i s e d B u d d h i s t societies of the F a r East appear to b e t a k i n g o v e r .

P e r h a p s w h a t it is all about is so b i g a n d s i m p l e that w e c a n n o t grasp it (any more than the caterpillar can comprehend bird geometry). Something like the sea of c o n s c i o u s n e s s , intelligence, n e e d i n g e y e s , ears, sensors to e x p e r i e n c e the m a t e r i a l u n i v e r s e , to o b s e r v e it e x i s t i n g a n d f u n c t i o n i n g . S o m e of us m a y h a v e to put this into faithspeak b y s a y i n g that the function of m a n is to praise the L o r d . Maurice Murphy and Rod Franks o p e n e d the c o n c e r t w i t h Vivaldi's Concerto in C for Two Trumpets.

A l t h o u g h t h e y w e r e not i d e a l l y m a t c h e d for t o n e a n d m u s i c a l q u a l i t y , their p l a y i n g w a s tight a n d this was w i t h o u t a doubt the o u t s t a n d i n g p e r f o r m a n c e of the evening.

R o c k y . T h i s t h e y then do, but not in the w a y y o u ' d expect, a n d I'm not t e l l i n g y o u w h o w i n s . So there.

T h e r e are t w o w a y s of w a t c h i n g this film. T h e first was aptly d e m o n s t r a t e d b y the critics, ie go into it w i t h no i n t e n t i o n of e n j o y i ng it. T h e s e c o n d is to try to k e e p a n o p e n m i n d a n d enjoy the film for w h a t it is. I t r i e d the s e c o n d , a n d despite the h e a v y - h a n d e d e m o t i o n a l i s m , d i d find myself w i l l i n g R o c k y to w i n i n the last scenes, w h i c h I appreciate is rather sad, but there y o u go.

T o s u m up, it is the best of the series since the first ( w h i c h d e s e r v e d the t h r e e oscars it w o n out of the t e n that it was n o m i n a t e d for), p r o b a b l y d u e , at least i n part, to h a v i n g the s a m e d i r e c t o r as the first one. If y o u enjoyed the first one, are a b i g ' R o c k y ' fan, or just f a n c y t r y i n g s o m e t h i n g that m a y t u r n o u t better t han y o u t h i n k , t h e n go a l o n g .

K l a u s v o n B u l o w has b e e n tried, s e n t e n c e d a n d a q u i t t e d of the c r i m e of a t t e m p t e d m u r d e r of his wife (with v a l i u m â&#x20AC;&#x201D; s e e above). T h i s is a true story.

It must be difficult to m a k e a film about a story i n w h i c h the true sequence of events is still u n k n o w n . So i n s t e a d w e see the story f r o m the p e r s p e c t i v e of a group of l a w y e r s p r e p a r i n g a case for the a p p e a l h e a r i n g . So w e have a film that functions o n t w o levels; the c e r e b r a l t e n s i o n of the u n c e r t a i n t y o v e r the i n n o c e n c e of K l a u s , w h i c h is i n h e r e n t l y fascinating, a n d the m o r e s t a n d a r d a d r e n a l i n e r u s h of the r a c e against t i m e.

T h e p e r f o r m a n c e s are perfect. J e r e m y Irons is s u p e r b l y uptight as the repressed K l a u s . G l e n n Close turns i n a p e r f o r m a n c e as g o o d as one w o u l d e x p e c t of her, as the a d d i c t i v e (take y o u r p i c k as to substance...) wife. (Can't wait to see her The G e r t r u d e in the u p - c o m i n g Hamlet).

27/1/91 T h e L S O c a n count a m o n g s t its r a n k s m a n y players w h o are fine soloists in their o w n right. T h i s c o n c e r t g a v e s o m e of the p r i n c i p a l s of the brass a n d w o o d w i n d sections the c h a n c e to t a k e cent re stage for the evening.

Y o u r a v e r a g e ' C r i t i c ' (ie a p e r s o n w h o gets p a i d to slag films off) w i l l p r o b a b l y hate this. D u r i n g the press s h o w i n g s e v e r a l of t h e m g a v e perfect e x a m p l e s of h o w to m a i n t a i n objectivity a n d suppress innate p r e j u d i c e . T h e y d i d this b y r i d i c u l i n g the film before it started, a n d t h e n m e e t i n g s e v e r a l parts of it w i t h d e r i s i v e laughter (they hadn't seen it before: I asked).

A n y w a y , e n o u g h of ' p r o f e s s i o n a l ' critics.

T h i s , the last (so w e ' r e told) of the R o c k y series c o n t i n u e s i m m e d i a t e l y after the not so realistic Rocky IV. T o g i v e y o u a r o u g h idea, R o c k y returns to A m e r i c a to find a l l his m o n e y g o n e due to a c r o o k e d a c c o u n t a n t . H e retires f r o m b o x i n g , sells his m a n s i o n , car, m o t o r b i k e , gloves, etc, to r e p a y w h a t debts he has, a n d m o v e s to a r u n - d o w n house in P h i l a d e l p h i a .

s u p p o r t i n g cast are e x c e l l e n t , e v e n if t h e y are p l a y i n g those p a r t i c u l a r l y n a u s e a t i n g A m e r i c a n graduatesâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;lawyers.

T h i s is all g o o d . I e n j o y e d w a t c h i n g the film. So w h y does it w o r r y me? T w o reasons, m a i n l y . F i r s t l y , h a v i n g a w o m a n (who is still a l i v e , e v e n if she is, effectively, a vegetable) n a r r a t i n g the story f r o m a c o m a is a little sick.

S e c o n d l y , one n e v e r feels e m o t i o n a l l y i n v o l v e d , w a t c h i n g the film is a dispassionate affair. Y e t I e n j o y e d d o i n g so i m m e n s e l y . H m m m .

Pendragon.

V a u g h a n W i l l i a m s ' Tuba Concerto was tackled by Patrick Harrild. His playing style was m o r e suited to the r a p i d passages r a t h e r t h a n the s l o w , l y r i c a l sections, a n d t h e p e r f o r m a n c e w a s not t e c h n i c a l l y perfect, but this w a s nevertheless an e n t e r t a i n i n g piece.

In contrast, t h e t h i r d p i e c e w a s B e r n s t e i n ' s Halil, for flute a n d o r c h e s t r a .

W r i t t e n in m e m o r y of a n Israeli flautist k i l l e d d u r i n g n a t i o n a l s e r v i c e , this piece is essentially a n o c t u r n e i n w h i c h t o n a l a n d n o n - t o n a l e l e m e n t s are i n conflict. T h e piece is h a u n t i n g , suggestive of b o t h the futility of w a r a n d hope i n life. P a u l Edmund-Davies gave a mesmerising and a c c o m p l i s h e d p e r f o r m a n c e as the solo flute, a b l y s u p p o r t e d b y the r e m a i n d e r of the flute s e c t i o n .

R e t u r n i n g r e f r e s h e d a n d rested f r o m the i n t e r v a l , the a u d i e n c e w a s c o n f r o n t e d w i t h a n eight piece brass e n s e m b l e (four trumpets, t w o t r o m b o n e s , h o r n a n d tuba) w h o r o m p e d t h r o u g h Ingol-Dahl's Music for Brass w i t h , o n the w h o l e , tight, s t y l i s h and accurate playing.

A n d r e w M a r r i n e r g a v e the gutsiest p e r f o r m a n c e of the e v e n i n g , p l a y i n g C o p l a n d ' s Clarinet Concerto. T h i s was c o m p o s e d as a c o m m i s s i o n for B e n n y G o o d m a n , a n d w h i l e it o p e n s i n u n m i s t a k a b l e (and rather tedious) C o p l a n d style, it livens c o n s i d e r a b l y w i t h the c e n t r a l c a d e n z a , i n w h i c h the soloist has a m p l e o p p o r t u n i t y to d e m o n s t r a t e his v i r t u o s i t y . T h e s e c o n d half is t h e n m u c h b r i s k e r , w i t h a great sense of fun.

Marriner's performance was blistering and powerful.

The evening ended with a performance of Ravel's La Valse. F r o m t h e m o m e n t T i l s o n T h o m a s strode o n stage a n d ostentatiously s l a p p e d shut his c o p y of the score, i n d i c a t i n g that he w a s g o i n g to c o n d u c t f r o m m e m o r y , the a u d i e n c e k n e w t h e y w e r e p r o b a b l y i n for s o m e t h i n g s p e c i a l . T h e p i e c e perfectly captures the sense of the lost, d o o m e d w o r l d of I m p e r i a l E u r o p e in the m i d n i n e t e e n t h c e n t u r y , w a l t z i n g itself to d e s t r u c t i o n . T i l s o n T h o m a s ' energetic c o n d u c t i n g n e a r l y w a l t z e d h i m off his p o d i u m , but this was a fine e x a m p l e of the c o n s i d e r a b l e talents of the L S O as a n ensemble.

London Symphony Orchestra & Chorus and Southend Boys Choir Barbican O n e c o u l d be f o r g i v e n for t h i n k i n g that in this p e r f o r m a n c e c o n d u c t o r R i c h a r d H i c k o x was i n d u l g i n g in a p r i v a t e j o k e at the e x p e n s e of Christianity. Stravinsky's devout Symphony of Psalms w a s p a i r e d w i t h Orff's setting of the i r r e v e r e n t i r r e l i g i o u s m o n a s t i c p o e m s f o u n d in B e u e r n i n B a v a r i a . In style as w e l l , he c o n t r a s t e d a n d e m p h a s i s e d the b r o o d i n g , serious nature of the S t r a v i n s k y w i t h the joyous lust for life e v i d e n t i n C a r m i n a B u r a n a .

Havana (directed b y S y d n e y Pollack) is set o n the e v e of 1959 a n d the Castro's r e v o l u t i o n .

T h e h e d o n i s m a n d d e c a d e n c e of the r i c h is about to give w a y to the s o b e r realities of the i m p o v e r i s h e d . J a c k W e i l (Robert Redford) is the g a m b l e r w h o t h i n k s that the night b e f o r e the r e v o l u t i o n is the ultimate t i m e to m a k e a b i g k i l l i n g .

H o w e v e r , he falls for R o b e r t a D u r a n (Lena O l i n , w h o w o n a n O s c a r for her role in The Unbearable Lightness of Being).

T h e S y m p h o n y of Psalms is s c o r e d for an unusual orchestra, consisting primarily of w i n d i n s t r u m e n t s a n d t w o pianos, a n d does not follow the s t a n d a r d s y m p h o n i c form. The orchestra and chorus handled the subtleties of the piece w e l l a n d p r o v i d e d a n e x c e l l e n t contrast to the

H i c k o x e m p h a s i s e d the p o w e r of Carmina Burana t h r o u g h ice-sharp s i n g i n g f r o m the c h o r u s , p a r t i c u l a r l y i n the c e n t r a l passages of Fortuna Imperatrix Mundi. Of the soloists, D o n a l d M a x w e l l w a s p a r t i c u l a r l y o u t s t a n d i n g , at times s e e m i n g to get c a r r i e d a w a y w i t h the p e r f o r m a n c e , but a l w a y s d i s p l a y i n g the e x c e l l e n c e of t h e w i d e range of talents he is c a p a b l e of.

T h i s p e r f o r m a n c e p u l l e d the a u d i e n c e t h r o u g h the r a n g e s of e m o t i o n a n d at times was too large e v e n for the e x p a n s i v e spaces of the B a r b i c a n H a l l .

T h i s is a p e r f o r m a n c e that w i l l l o n g r e m a i n i n the m e m o r y .

R o b e r t a D u r a n happens to be m a r r i e d to a c o m m i t t e d r e v o l u t i o n a r y , w h o belongs to o n e of the most w e a l t h y a n d p o w e r f u l families i n H a v a n a . J a c k stakes e v e r y t h i n g o n R o b e r t a , t h i n k i n g he has f o u n d his l u c k y b r e a k in l i f e — h o w e v e r he is u n a b l e to u n d e r s t a n d w h y she has to be i n v o l v e d i n or c o m m i t t e d to the r e v o l u t i o n . It is this contrast that S y d n e y P o l l a c k b r i n g s across most successfully i n the film. W h e r e a s J a c k has spent his life drifting f r o m o n e c i t y to a n o t h e r , w i t h o u t a n y ties or b o n d s , almost l a c k i n g a n y values or v i s i o n , the w o m a n he falls for i n the e n d is his exact opposite. She has a cause.

In the final a n a l y s i s , h o w e v e r , the f i lm isn't h e l d together v e r y w e l l : it r a m b l e s o n for almost 2>/2 hours. T h e l a v i s h sets a n d locations are u n a b l e to detract f r o m the fact that R o b e r t a a n d J a c k don't actually m a k e a v e r y c o n v i n c i n g c o u p l e , or that the politics of the r e v o l u t i o n (expressed t h r o u g h R o b e r t a ) p o r t a y e d i n the f i lm are v e r y simplistic (though this c a n be f o r g i v e n o n the g r o u n d s that this is, after a l l , H o l l y w o o d r o m a n c e ) .

T h e best p e r f o r m a n c e i n the film probably comes from A l a n Arkin's Joe V o l p i — t h e o w n e r of the p l u s h L i d o Casino, p l a y g r o u n d of the w e a l t h y about to lose it a l l . Joe c a n see the d o o m about to befall h i m a n d his c l i e n t e l e , but there is a g r i m a c c e p t a n c e in h i m w h i c h b e c o m e s a l m o s t noble.

B i g A r n i e is not the sort of p e r s o n that y o u e v e r r e a l l y i m a g i n e as b e i n g o u t of their d e p t h . J o h n K i m b l e (Guess who?) is not the sort of Cop who you imagine ever being run all o v e r b y a n y o n e . He's the sort of p e r s o n w h o b r e a k s u p parties w i t h a B I G gun w h i l e d e c l a r i n g 'Next t i m e , m y place!', before t h r e a t e n i n g a witness into g i v i n g e v i d e n c e . H e ' s the sort of c o p w h o c a n go u n d e r c o v e r a n y w h e r e safely. E x c e p t a primary school.

W e ' v e seen A r n o l d pitted against e v e r y t h i n g f r o m i n v i s i b l e p r e d a t o r s to L i n d a H a m i l t o n ' s s c r e a m , a n d c o m e out u n s c a t h e d . F o r the first t i m e he finds a group that he can't use a n U z i o n .

Twenty kicking, screaming, wetting and B y the w a y , e v e n if y o u d o n ' t see the film, y o u have to hear the s o u n d t r a c k . It's disobedient toddlers. It's a b r i l l i a n t i d e a .

T h e first t w e n t y m i n u t e s p l a y s l i k e a hot. straight S c h w a r t z e n e g g e r m o v i e , t h e n w e I.H. s u d d e n l y find O u r H e r o h y p e r - v e n t i l a t i n g outside a c l a s s r o o m . T h e s u b l i m e contrast —Concert of w h a t w e e x p e c t a n A r n i e c h a r a c t e r to be, c o m p a r e d to w h a t he is forced to b e c o m e is the root of this c o m e d y . It works brilliantly!

Twins p r o v e d that A r n i e h a d the a b i l i t y to be f u n n y , a n d this f i lm o n l y serves to impress m e further w i t h his abilities. B o t h as straight m a n to others (his p a r t n e r , his headmistress, his kids) a n d as a d e l i v e r e r of gags in his o w n right, h e turns i n the goods. He's a l l o w e d a l o v e affair, that results in s o m e g e n u i n e l y t o u c h i n g m o m e n t s , a n d his p a r t n e r p u t t i n g o n a n A u s t r i a n accent for the c o u r s e of a m e a l (I h a m hiz zizter..). A N D he o n l y shoots the one p e r s o n .

A pleasant s m a t t e r of all y o u w o u l d (Ghostbusters) expect i n a f i lm f r o m Ivan Reitman. Violence, love and comedy. This is a g o o d f i l m . T h i s is a w h o l e s o m e f i l m.

A s l o n g as B r i t a i n ' s b l i n k e r e d m o t o r i s t s w a n t t h e freedom to p i c k their noses i n w h i c h e v e r traffic j a m t h e y please, o u r roads w i l l always be clogged.

E v e r h a d that guilty feeling about cars?

Y o u a r e t o r n b e t w e e n a passionate l o v e affair for b u y i n g , c l e a n i n g , o w n i n g a n d r u n n i n g a car a n d that little bit of guilt about the d e s t r u c t i v e c o n s e q u e n c e s ; t h e p o l l u t i o n , w h i c h is s l o w l y k i l l i n g t h e planet a n d people.

T h e h u m a n b r a i n was not designed for c o n t r o l l i n g a r a p i d l y m o v i n g object. Despite this, a staggering 3 5 m i l l i o n n e w cars a r e p r o d u c e d e a c h y e a r w o r l d w i d e . That's one car e a c h s e c o n d . G o to sleep at night a n d 30,000 n e w cars h a v e b e e n c r e a t e d before y o u w a k e i n the m o r n i n g . Sneeze a n d five cars a r e b o r n into t h e w o r l d .

T h a n k f u l l y for us, at the m o m e n t , t h e third world's reliance o n t h e internal c o m b u s t i o n e n g i n e is n o t as great as ours.

T h e r e a r e c u r r e n t l y 500 m i l l i o n cars i n the w o r l d . If C h i n a h a d c a r s to' the s a m e ratio as the U S A t h e n t h e y a l o n e w o u l d have 500 m i l l i o n cars. In eastern E u r o p e t h e y a r e e x p e r i e n c i n g their first freedom for m a n y y e a r s a n d car m a n u f a c t u r e r s are ' m e e t i n g the c h a l l e n g e ' .

If the car density of n o r t h E u r o p e is to s p r e a d to the rest of the w o r l d it w i l l have serious e n v i r o n m e n t a l consequences . E v e n u n l e a d e d p e t r o l still contains h u n d r e d s of p o t e n t i a l l y h a r m f u l t o x i n s . T h e w o r l d c a n n o t s uppo r t this ; l e v e l of g r o w t h i n air p o l l u t i o n . T h e I p r e d i c a m e n t c a n n o t b e stressed m o r e c l e a r l y t h a n this, but as w i t h a l l these environmental problems, the consequences a r e not i m m e d i a t e .

D e s t r u c t i o n a n d poisons a c c u m u l a t e , out of sight, until it is t o o late. T h e hole i n the o z o n e l a y e r is i n v i s i b l e a n d t h e

greenhous e effect just m e a n s w a r m e r s u m m e r s to a lot of p e o p l e .

So w h a t is the a n s w e r ? T h i s i n c u r a b l e l o v e affair that m a n has w i t h his car is m o r e t h a n just a n e x t e n s i o n to his genitals, a statement of his s e x u a l prowess. T h e f r e e d o m of transport has b e e n a ' h u m a n r i g h t ' since m a n c l i m b e d o n the b a c k of a beast a n d r o d e it. T h e car, s i m p l y a n e v o l u t i o n of this beast, is a p o l i t i c a l hot potato. A n y g o v e r n m e n t w h o bars this f r e e d o m of d r i v i n g w i l l b e i n p o l i t i c a l i s o l a t i o n for a l o n g w h i l e . T h e right to t r a v e l w h e r e w e w a n t , w h e n w e w a n t is t a k e n for g r a n t e d , y e t i n congested B r i t a i n t h e ' f r e e d o m of t h e o p e n r o a d ' is a joke. M i l l i o n s w o u l d rather c r a w l i n queues all d a y l i k e sheep, than use p u b l i c transport. W h y ?

U s i n g p u b l i c transport is estimated to be the e q u i v a l e n t of 130-200 m p g p e r passenger, so it is p r e f e r a b l e if it c a n p r o v i d e a r e l i a b l e service, w h i c h is c h e a p , c l e a n a n d secure, p a r t i c u l a r l y for w o m e n at night.

T h e o l d e x c u s e that ' p u b l i c transport isn't efficient' is o u t d a t e d . It seems doubtful that t h e i m p r o v e m e n t s i n p u b l i c transport c a l l e d for b y o r g a n i s a t i o n s s u c h as E T A (a mass m e m b e r s h i p transport users organisation) w o u l d s o l v e the p r o b l e m s . P s y c h o l o g i s t s e x p l a i n that p e o p l e can't r e l a x o n p u b l i c transport.

In w h a t e v e r guise, the c a r is here to stay. Its use is t h r e a t e n i n g t o rise 8 3 - 1 4 2 % i n the n e x t 35 y e a r s . Despite this, g o v e r n m e n t s , v e h i c l e m a n u f a c t u r e r s a n d d r i v e r s a l l have a role to p l a y i n r e d u c i n g the i m p a c t of the car o n t h e e n v i r o n m e n t . T h e first e l e c t r i c c a r was r e l e a s e d i n 1986. It i n s t a n t l y a c q u i r e d t h e status of a r u s t y R o b i n R e l i a n t a n d was shunned b y the public. Electric vehicles still have t h e prestige of a m i l k float o r a s e w i n g m a c h i n e , associated w i t h m e n i a l w o r k . N o finely t u n e d g r o w l f r o m b e n e a t h the b o n n e t , n o c h r o m e d e x h a u s t pipe, n o n e e d f o r fuel injection, a n d n o place for T u r b o lag! But a r e B r i t a i n ' s motorists so b l i n k e r e d ? E l e c t r i c m o t o r s r e q u i r e less m a i n t e n a n c e m i l e for m i l e .

N o frozen d i e z e l i n the w i n t e r , n o antifreeze r e q u i r e d , a n d n o burst radiators.

T o i m p r o v e the a p p e a l of the electric v e h i c l e y o u h a v e to a n a l y s e w h a t it is that sells a c a r . A l t h o u g h cars a r e bought p r i m a r i l y for getting f r o m A to B , t h e l o o k s , p e r f o r m a n c e a n d , of c o u r s e , t h e n a m e a r e all i m p o r t a n t . A l o g o o n t h e i g n i t i o n k e y sitting o n the b a r i n the p u b speaks v o l u m e s ! T h e ' G T i ' b a d g e o r t h e w o r d ' T u r b o ' tattooed o n the boot a r e a must. T h e i m a g e a n d profile of a car w i l l m a k e o r b r e a k it.

E a c h c a r has its label, w h i c h the p e r s o n b e h i n d the w h e e l a u t o m a t i c a l l y inherits.

Last S u n d a y the ' E v e r y m a n ' p r o g r a m m e o n B B C 1 broadcast the story of the death of a y o u n g w o m a n f r o m l e u k a e m i a . It m o v i n g l y s h o w e d the s u p p o r t she r e c e i v e d f r o m h e r family a n d the help g i v e n to t h e m b y a H u m a n i s t c o u n s e l l o r .

It is often a surprise to p e o p l e to find out that those w h o h a v e rejected faith i n G o d are c o n t r i b u t i n g to social a n d m o r a l , welfare e x p l i c i t e l y w i t h i n a f r a m e w o r k of non-belief, that is as h u m a n i s t s . In countries like H o l l a n d h u m a n i s t s are o n e q u a l terms w i t h theistic r e l i g i o n s i n terms of their c o n t r i b u t i o n s to the care of p e o p l e w i t h i n society. Sadly i n this c o u n t r y the l a w a n d g o v e r n m e n t f u n d i n g do not a l l o w s u c h pari t y.

But s o m e of their most i m p o r t a n t w o r k is d o n e on an i n d i v i d u a l basis w i t h i n our c o m m u n i t i e s . T h e s e i n c l u d e humanist ceremonies. Humanist weddings and funerals go b a c k to the last c e n t u r y .

N e h r u , the first Indian p r i m e minister, stated in his w i l l that he w a n t e d a funeral w i t h no m e n t i o n of G o d . A c o p y of this d o c u m e n t a l o n g w i t h an essay o n his thought about r e l i g i o n c a n b e o b t a i n e d f r o m the H u x l e y Society b o o k s t a l l (Friday l u n c h t i m e s in t h e JCR). I n d e e d the d e m a n d for c e r e m o n i e s has i n c r e a s e d so m u c h that t r a i n e d humanist celebrants, or officiants, w h o c o n d u c t the c e r e m o n i e s on

H u m a n i s t s are u n f a i r l y d i s c r i m i n a t e d against, as if their beliefs a r e still not r e c o g n i s e d as respectable. O n e A m e r i c a n b o o k , Your Quest for God b y R A Bennett, a c t u a l l y states, 'In our day Satan c o n t i n u e s his nasty w o r k t h r o u g h the d e c e p t i v e teachings of s e c u l a r h u m a n i s m ' , a n d a m e m b e r of the H o u s e of L o r d s d u r i n g the 1988 E d u c a t i o n D e b a t e d e c l a r e d that if y o u do not b e l i e v e in G o d y o u c o u l d h a v e no values!

T h e B r i t i s h H u m a n i s t A s s o c i a t i o n is fighting for its c o u n s e l l o r s to be r e c o g n i s e d as 'spiritual' advi sers w i t h the s a m e v i s i t i n g rights as c l e r g y m e n in H M prisons. It is also fighting against insidious c a m p a i g n s of C h r i s t i a n s l i k e B a r o n e s s C o x w h o w a n t to force their r e l i g i o n onto o u r c h i l d r e n as a part of a m o r a l c a m p a i g n .

She m a n a g e d to get passed an * a m e n d m e n t to the E d u c a t i o n A c t f o r c i n g Christian worship on school children, unless the s c h o o l or i n d i v i d u a l c h i l d opt out! this was d o n e d u r i n g a late sitting of the L o r d s , w i t h few m e m b e r s b e i n g present. Most s e c o n d a r y schools in this c o u n t r y are p r o b a b l y , v e r y deliberately, b r e a k i n g that law! Indeed H u m a n i s t s are on o v e r t w e n t y - f i ve L o c a l E d u c a t i o n A u t h o r i t y c o m m i t t e e s that advise schools o n religious e d u c a t i o n a n d w o r s h i p . In one, in L o n d o n , the H u m a n i s t has b e e n elected as its c h a i r m a n !

H u m a n i s t s h a v e a history of social c o n t r i b u t i o n to our society. T h e y have, at the cost of their o w n f r e e d o m s a n d m o n e y , fought for the f r e e d o m of s p e e c h a n d belief. A humanist h o u s i n g association o w n s o v e r one t h o u s a n d properties in this c o u n t r y in w h i c h it houses the n e e d y a n d e l d e r l y . T h e r e was a humanist a d o p t i o n a g e n c y to b r e a k the m o n o p o l y the c h u r c h o n c e h a d o v e r w h o w a s a l l o w e d to be adoptive parents. T h e y c a m p a i g n in p a r l i a m e n t on m o r a l issues s u c h as a b o r t i o n , p r e - e m b r y o r e s e a r c h , e u t h a n a s i a a n d capital p u n i s h m e n t .

W h i l s t the a n t i - a b o r t i o n l o b b y w e r e s e n d i n g plastic models of foetuses to M P s the B r i t i s h H u m a n i s t A s s o c i a t i o n was s e n d i n g t h e m a leaflet that e x a m i n e d the m o r a l issues, this r e c e i v e d praise from the New Scientist a n d v a r i o u s professional m e d i c a l groups.

T h e first f u n e r a l I c o n d u c t e d was of a m a n w h o w a s m u c h l o v e d b y his f a m i l y a n d those w h o c a m e to k n o w h i m . It w a s a w e l l - a t t e n d e d funeral. M y s p e e c h was w r i t t e n for m e by the daughter-in-law, e x c e p t for m y i n t r o d u c t o r y a n d concluding remarks which gave significance to the i m p o r t a n c e of r e m e m b e r i n g a n d l e a r n i n g f r o m the lives of those w e l o v e . It was the first funeral I h a v e b e e n to w h e r e p e o p l e l a u g h e d , t hey l a u g h e d t o g e t h e r not at c h e a p jokes but at s h a r e d m e m o r i e s of h u m o u r o u s times t he y had had together. T h e m a n h a d b e e n a D I Y enthusiast c o n s t r u c t i n g his o w n s h e d w h i c h fell d o w n o n h i m , k n o c k i n g h i m out. Tears m i x e d w i t h laughter, b o t h g i v i n g p u b l i c e x p r e s s i o n to a s h a r e d w a r m t h a n d respect. T h i s is one w a y humanists express their attitude to life. That day, h a v i n g the h o n o u r of e x p r e s s i n g t h e i r m e m o r i e s of h i m to his family, I felt e x h i l a r a t e d w i t h life.

T r a g i c a l l y s o m e p e o p l e fail to u n d e r s t a n d t h e nature of these funerals.

A c l e r g y m a n i n Belfast w a s c a m p a i g n i n g last y e a r to p r e v e n t t h e m from t a k i n g place in city c e m e t e r i e s or c r e m a t o r i a .

S o m e h o w he felt t hey w e r e offensive.

Last year, the m o t h e r of a y o u n g m a n w h o died f r o m A I D S , held u p the funeral for six m o n t h s b y contesting his w i l l in w h i c h he stated that he w a n t e d a h u m a n i s t f u n e r a l . T h e y a r g u e d that he was not m e n t a l l y competent w h e n m a k i n g the w i l l , a n d that his a t h e i s m was not genuine. H e h a d b e e n a m e m b e r of the N a t i o n a l Secul ar Soci ety for n e a r l y t h i r t e e n y e a r s , a n d an atheist for m a n y m o r e . His m o t h e r was a b o r n - a g a i n C h r i s t i a n w h o b e l i e v e d A I D S to be satanic. T h e funeral was w e l l attended w i t h his friends but no m e m b e r of his f am i ly t u r n e d up.

S a d l y humanists are s e c o n d class citizens w h e r e the l a w applies to w e d d i n g s , they still h a v e to register at the Registrar's Office, t h o u g h E d w i n a C u r r i e , before her r e s i g n a t i o n , started changes that w i l l a l l o w couples to m a r r y a n d register i n places other t h a n those of r e g u l a r w o r s h i p o r c o u n c i l offices.

In the desperate battle against drugs, such e v i d e n c e is often o v e r l o o k e d . In N o v e m b e r 1988, t h e U n i t e d States j o i n e d the league of n a t i o ns o p t i n g for e x e c u t i o n s as a w e a p o n against t h e d r u g trade. F e d e r a l L a w n o w a l l o w s t h e i m p o s i t i o n of the d e a t h p e n a l t y as a n o p t i o n a l p u n i s h m e n t for persons w h o i n t e n t i o n a l l y k i l l o r o r d e r killings w h i l e c o m m i t t i n g drug-related offences.

C o n v i c t e d of possessing 937 g r a m s of m a r i j u a n a a n d b e i n g a m e m b e r of a d r u g syndicate, he b e c a m e the first p r i s o n e r i n 1990 to join Malaysia's e v e r - r i s i n g toll of those e x e c u t e d i n w h a t officials n o w a d m i t is a lethal failure to s t e m t h e c o u n t r y ' s d r u g trade.

B a c k i n M a l a y s i a , w i t h its s o a r i n g a d d i c t i o n rate, officials a r e b e g i n n i n g to express doubts about the effectiveness of the death p e n a l t y as a deterrent. In J u n e this year the D e p u t y M i n i s t e r of H o m e Affairs said that the c o u n t r y ' s m a n d a t o r y death p e n a l t y f o r d r u g trafficking h a d failed to c u r b either the trade o r d r u g abuse a n d that a n e w a p p r o a c h to the p r o b l e m was n e e d e d .

Malaysia's a n t i - d r u g d r i v e m a d e i n t e r n a t i o n a l headlines i n the e a r l y 1980s w h e n the c o u n t r y ' s leaders m a d e t h e death penalty mandatory i n drug offences. H u g e b i l l b o a r d s w a r n e d l o c a l citizens a n d foreign travellers: ' B e f o r e w a r n e d : D e a t h for d r u g traffickers u n d e r M a l a y s i a n law.' B y J u n e of this y e a r the n a t i o n a l press r e p o r t e d that 104 convicts had been hanged o n drug charges since 1983 a n d a further 200 were waiting o n death row.

O n e of o v e r 20 countries have n o w tried using the death p e n a l t y for d r u g offences, M a l a y s i a has b e c o m e a c r u c i b l e for testing the effectiveness of t h e p u n i s h m e n t as the u l t i m a t e antidote to narcotics.

T h e statistics for a d d i c t i o n paint a g r i m picture. In 1970 o n l y 711 addicts w e r e identified i n t h e c o u n t r y . T w o decades later, i n D e c e m b e r 1989, t h e H o m e M i n i s t r y ' s D a d a h (drugs) T r e a t m e n t a n d R e h a b i l i t a t i o n D i v i s i o n h a d identified 145,685 addicts t h r o u g h o u t the c o u n t r y .

Not o n l y has the increase b e e n staggering, but it has c o n t i n u e d regardless of the h a n g m a n . T w o y e a r s after t h e 1983 d e c i s i o n to m a k e the d e a t h p e n a l t y m a n d a t o r y for d r u g offences, t h e g o v e r n m e n t ' s figure for r e g i s t e r ed addicts stood at 102,807. F o r t e e n m o n t h s later it h a d risen to 111,688. T w o years later— and with executions being enacted in a blaze of p u b l i c i t y against foreigners as w e l l as local c i t i z e n s — t h e a d d i c t i o n register h a d g o n e u p to 128,741, a steep rise of n e a r l y 30 p e r cent o v e r three years.

T h e e x p e r i m e n t had failed. But executions continue.

A 1989 report b y the International Narcotics C o n t r o l B o a r d s a i d that M a l a y s i a was c o n t i n u i n g to be affected b y g r o w i n g 'transit traffic' i n v o l v i n g primarily opium and heroin. Both were

Of the 104 r e p o r t e d e x e c u t i o n s , 2 5 w e r e said to h a v e b e e n foreigners. T h e s e n o w i n c l u d e H a n T s u i L i n , o n e of eight H o n g K o n g citizens e x e c u t e d o n 30 M a y 1990 i n the c o u n t r y ' s biggest mass e x e c u t i o n . She b e c a m e t h e first foreign w o m a n to h a n g i n M a l a y s i a .

V i r t u a l l y e v e r y time a foreigner has c o m e u p for e x e c u t i o n , press interest has b e e n intense a n d heads of g o v e r n m e n t have p u b l i c l y a n d p r i v a t e l y a p p e a l e d to the M a l a y s i a n authorities t o s h o w c l e m e n c y . T o date, the pleas have fallen on deaf ears, a n d nationals of A u s t r a l i a , B r i t a i n , Indonesia, the P h i l i p p i n e s ,

S i n g a p o r e a n d T h a i l a n d h a v e also been put to death.

A m n e s t y I n t e r n a t i o n a l , the w o r l d w i d e h u m a n rights o r g a n i s a t i o n , has repeatedly u r g e d the M a l a y s i a n a u t h o r i t i e s to stop the k i l l i n g . It has t a k e n t h e same stand against the d e a t h p e n a l t y i n all countries.

In a major report o n the d e a t h penalty released a y e a r ago, the o r g a n i s a t i o n states: 'The r a t i o n a l e for u s i n g the d e a t h p e n a l t y is that it w i l l deter d r u g traffickers m o r e effectively t h a n other p u n i s h m e n t s . B u t despite h u n d r e d s of e x e c u t i o n s t h e r e is n o clear e v i d e n c e of a d e c l i ne i n drug-trafficking w h i c h c o u l d be c l e a r l y a t t r i b u t e d to the threat o r use of that penalty.'

I n t e r n a t i o n a l experts agree. T h e lack of deterrent effect was ci t ed at t h e D e c e m b e r 1985 m e e t i n g of the U n i t e d Nations E x p e r t G r o u p o n C o u n t e r m e a s u r e s to D r u g S m u g g l i n g b y A i r a n d Sea. T h e ' g r o u p ' s r e p o r t stated:

Life is e x p l o r e d i n its least subtle aspects w i t h live o r g a n d o n o r s , the G r i m m R e a p e r , songs, d a n c i n g girls, a n d of c o u r s e M r Creosote.

T h i s film c a n n e v e r be seen often enough.

A sizable c o n t i n g e n t of o u r l o v a b l e insane athletes t r o o p e d off en masse to H o r s e n d e n H i l l for part 4 of the colleges' league saga, d e l i v e r i n g a n o t h e r p h e n o m e n o u s d i s p l a y of m u d - w a l l o w i n g sufficient to e x t e n d our o v e r a l l lead to unassailable p r o p o r t i o n s . Rugby IC 1st X V - 7 Cardiff 1st X V A f t e r q u a l i f y i n g f r o m the S o u t h East group IC R u g b y faced Cardiff in the last s i x t e e n of the U A U . T h e W e l s h i e s getting to this stage b y defeating B i r m i n g h a m 60-3 in a play-off r o u n d .

Last y e a r IC went out of the c o m p e t i t i o n defeated 31-12 b y S w a n s e a , w h o w e n t o n a n d n a r r o w l y lost to L o u g h b o r o u g h in the final at â&#x20AC;˘ T w i c k e n h a m . It was a b r a v e display f r o m the m u c h y o u n g e r a n d i n e x p e r i e n c e d IC side. W i t h v i r t u a l l y the same t e a m , confidence was r u n n i n g at a m u c h h i g h e r l e v e l this year. T h e IC outfit was better p r e p a r e d a n d k e e n e r t h a n e v e r before.

W i t h a h a r d y b a n d of s u p p o r t e r s c h e e r i n g o n the lads, IC k i c k e d off o n a cold Wednesday afternoon. The opening minutes w e r e quite frantic, b o t h p a c k s h u n t i n g ferociously for the b a l l a n d w h e n it w a s s p u n to the b a c k s e a c h side t a c k l e d c l i n i c a l l y . T h e g a m e was cut a n d thrust, n o t h i n g g i v e n either w a y . E v e n t u a l l y after a n IC i n f r i n g e m e n t , the Cardiff standoff l a n d e d a penalty, b r e a k i n g the d e a d l o c k a n d p u t t i n g Cardiff three points up. IC got r i g h t b a c k into the g a m e a n d s o o n scores w e r e tied, t h a n k s to a M i k e A n d e r s o n p e n a l t y 'success'. Just before

half-time Cardiff f l y h a c k e d the ball d o w n f i e l d , after s o m e s l o p p y c l e a r a n c e efforts, the b a l l b o b b l e d i n t o the flanker's hands w h o d u e l y p o p p e d o v e r to score a pretty dire try. (Half-time: IC 3, Cardiff 7).

T h e s e c o n d c o n t i n u e d m u c h in the w a y of the first. IC t r y i n g to p i c k the pace up a gear a n d Cardiff k e e p i n g t h e p l a y tight, using their h e a v i e r forwards to g r i n d IC d o w n , m o v i n g d o w n f i e l d one s c r u m or lineout to the next. T h e n , as if r e l e a s i n g a p r e s s u r e cap, IC b r o k e out, w i t h b l i n d i n g b r i l l i a n c e , a l l out defence was t u r n e d into a l l out attack, forwards s w a r m i n g up field like r a v i s h i n g herds, b a c k s s t r i d i n g upfield as if s t e r o i d i m p l a n t e d . T h e 9-0 b e a t i n g w a s d i s a p p o i n t i n g a n d 1 felt w e c o u l d h a v e g a i n e d a few p o i n t s to m a k e the score m o r e respectable.

T h e m e n ' s 1st t e a m h a d t h e i r p r o b l e m s facing S o u t h a m p t o n . W i t h o u r best p l a y e r injured (Simon) the task b e c a m e m o r e difficult. T h e m a t c h w a s e v e n s right until the last g a m e at 4-4. W e w e r e not let d o w n b y the U A U finalists last y e a r Simon Hughes and Trevor Kernick who w o n their g a m e to g i v e t h e 1st t e a m a place i n the q u a r t e r finals.

Dear Andy, O k a y , so I feel c h a l l e n g e d (or p r o v o k e d ? ) to put p e n to p a p e r i n response to the s e c o n d half of A t h e n a ' s letter (who is A t h e n a a n y w a y ? Doesn't (s)he have the c o u r a g e to a d m i t to his/her o w n views?) a n d m o r e specifically to the rantings against the ' G o d S q u a d G u y s ' w h o w r o t e against a b o r t i o n . I w o u l d like to put the r e c o r d straight, a n d ' say that it isn't just 'guys' w h o are against a b o r t i o n , I a m one of m a n y w o m e n w h o also believe that a b o r t i o n is m u r d e r a n d hence v e r y w r o n g .

'But w h a t w o u l d you do if you got pregnant?' I hear y o u ask. M y a n s w e r is that y o u don't e v e n h a v e to r u n the slightest risk of getting p r e g n a n t before y o u are r e a d y . A n d that's w i t h o u t u s i n g c o n t r a c e p t i v e s or b e i n g frigid. Society has r e d u c e d the v a l u e of sex. It's fashionable and almost e x p e c t e d of y o u to sleep w i t h s o m e o n e (or e v e n s e v e r a l people), i n fact, if y o u ' r e still a v i r g i n , p e o p l e b e g i n to w o n d e r w h a t planet y o u ' v e c o m e f r o m .

Sex has e v e n b e e n r e d u c e d to be used as an abusive s w e a r w o r d . W h e r e ' s the respect gone for one of life's greatest pleasures? It's too easy to 'get laid', a n d t h e n it's too easy to dispose of the 'evidence'. Y o u k n o w the s a y i n g , 'easy c o m e , easy go'.

But I b e l i e v e that G o d has created e a c h one of us a n d so, f o l l o w i n g t h r o u g h w i t h that a r g u m e n t , I b e l i e v e that it is His w i l l if a t i n y s p e r m i m p r e g n a t e s a t i n y egg,

starting up t he r e p r o d u c t i v e course. T h i s m e a n s that e v e r y b a b y that is c o n c e i v e d , G o d has c r e a t e d , so w h o are w e to take a w a y their lives.

I k n o w that m a n y w o m e n don't h a v e the faith (and courage?) that I have, a n d so I a m not p r e a c h i n g c o l d heartedly at t h e m , to m a k e t h e m c h a n g e their views.

But I a m c o n c e r n e d that s o m e t i m e s they are offered n o alternative to a b o r t i o n . I have h e a r d of several i n c i d e n c e s w h e r e w o m e n have g o n e to the health centre here in C o l l e g e a n d have b e e n c o u n s e l l e d o n l y for a b o r t i o n w i t h n o offer of help or a d v i c e to p u r s u e the alternatives. T h e n after their abortions, they h a v e b e e n a b a n d o n e d b y the N H S . L e a v i n g s o m e v e r y desperate a n d e m o t i o n a l l y v u l n e r a b l e w o m e n to s e a r c h for help a n d support f r o m p e o p l e like the Samaratans or the c h u r c h . So m u c h for respecting w o m e n a n d their rights, eh?

W h e r e J o h n Cleese Went W r o n g P r o b a b l y for m a n y of y o u the t i m e has c o m e to m a k e the biggest d e c i s i o n of y o u r life. T h e question is w h a t career do y o u w a n t to t h r o w y o u r s e l f into n o w that y o u have finished y o u r degree?

I was in that same p o s i t i o n about 12 m o n t h s ago, u n d e c i d e d as to w h e t h e r to go into M a r k e t i n g or into the p o p u l a r a n d d e m a n d i n g a r e a of A c c o u n t a n c y . In the e n d , I chose A c c o u n t a n c y a n d the c h a n c e to a c q u i r e one of the p r e m i e r business qualifications, t h e i n t e r n a t i o n a l l y recognised Chartered A c c o u n t a n c y qualification.

Of course, h a v i n g m a d e that d e c i s i o n , I was faced w i t h a n o t h e r â&#x20AC;&#x201D; w h i c h f i r m d i d I w a n t to join? T h e v a r i o u s r e c r u i t m e n t b r o c h u r e s a n d articles w e r e a n i m p o r t a n t s o u r c e of i n f o r m a t i o n to help w i t h this, but b y far the most p e r s u a d i n g e v i d e n c e was what I learned by meeting and t a l k i n g to p e o p l e a l r e a d y w o r k i n g w i t h the v a r i o u s firms, a n d it was o n that basis that I chose A r t h u r A n d e r s e n . i n t e r n a t i o n a l l y , A r t h u r A n d e r s e n is one of the largest firms of a c c o u n t a n t s , tax a n d l a w consultants in the w o r l d . It is a y o u n g f i r m , staffed b y y o u n g people, a n d it prides itself o n w o r k i n g h a r d to a c h i e v e its objectives i n e v e r y a r e a of its business.

Y o u s h o u l d r e m e m b e r that there are m a n y different specialisations w i h t i n a c c o u n t a n c y at A r t h u r A n d e r s e n . A n i m p o r t a n t tip before m a k i n g y o u r d e c i s i o n is to a n a l y s e c a r e f u l l y the pro's a n d con's of e a c h one. I c h o s e the T a x C o n s u l t a n c y division.

A c t u a l l y , the n a m e ' T a x C o n s u l t a n c y ' p r o b a b l y doesn't do justice to the range of areas c o v e r e d . A s a n e x a m p l e , m y g r o u p has just finished a d v i s i n g o n the l e v e r a g e d buy-out of an i n t e r n a t i o n a l c o n s u m e r p r o d u c t g r o u p . A s w e l l as a d v i s i n g on h o w to structure the deal so that the most f a v o u r a b l e tax position was a c h i e v e d in the 19 different countries w h e r e the g r o u p operates, w e w e r e i n v o l v e d in d e c i d i n g w h i c h c u r r e n c i e s the senior a n d m e z z a n i n e finance s h o u l d be b o r r o w e d i n , h o w to r e m i t b l o c k e d funds to E u r o p e f r o m L a t i n A m e r i c a n a n d A s i a n countries, n e g o t i a t i n g the terms of the sale a n d p u r c h a s e contracts w i t h the seller, a n d a w h o l e range of other legal questions, M o n o p o l i e s C o m m i s s i o n issues a n d g e n e r a l business decisions. T h e r e is no doubt that b e i n g part of the A r t h e r A n d e r s e n t e a m on a deal l i k e that is a v e r y q u i c k w a y to l e a r n h o w i n t e r n a t i o n a l business operates.

It d i d not surprise m e m u c h to l e a r n that the job i n v o l v e s a lot of h a r d w o r k a n d c o m m i t m e n t , but i n r e t u r n I have b e e n i n v o l v e d in a range of s t i m u l a t i n g assignments a n d have h a d the o p p o r t u n i t y to t r a v e l a b r o a d a n d w o r k w i t h c o l l e a g u e s f r o m a l l a r o u n d the w o r l d . A lot of early r e s p o n s i b i l i t y has b e e n g i v e n to me m a t c h e d by in-house t r a i n i n g o n h o w to h a n d l e that responsibility.

T h e r e is also a w e l l d e f i n e d c a r e e r structure, so that I k n o w w h e r e I c a n e x p e c t to be in the years a h e a d p r o v i d e d that I k e e p u p m y effortsâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;indeed, there are quite a f e w Imperial graduates w h o m I w o r k with here w h o have been p r o m o t e d to m a n a g e r a n d have i n c r e a s e d their starting salaries fivefold w i t h i n 4 or 5 years of l e a v i n g Imperial.

H o p e f u l l y this w i l l give y o u a c l e a r e r p i c t u r e of w h a t a c c o u n t a n c y c a n offer y o u a n d w h a t A r t h u r A n d e r s e n is a l l about. D o n ' t get m e w r o n g it's not all about just w o r k . In the office e v e r y b o d y has a v e r y professional attitude but w h e n the social life starts...well...I'll leave that up to y o u to find out!!

But, a l l that aside, it's still a v i c t o r y for us as students. It s h o w s that if w e c a n rise a b o v e t h e r a b i d a p a t h y that appears to be a n i n h e r e n t part of IC, t h e n w e c a n c h a n g e things. It m i g h t also s h o w C o l l e g e that t h e y can't do w h a t t h e hell t h e y l i k e ,

Who? T h e ' R e a l M a n ' saga c o n t i n u e s . I h a v e r e c e i v e d the letter f r o m A n g u s F r a s e r that I m e n t i o n e d last w e e k , but u n f o r t u n a t e l y he c l e a r l y m a r k e d the e n v e l o p e as ' c o n f i d e n t i a l ' a n d the letter itself as ' P e r s o n a l ' . In E n g l i s h , this m e a n s that it w o u l d be a bit off for m e to p r i n t it w i t h o u t his p e r m i s s i o n . Suffice it to say that it e x p r e s s e d , quite s t r o n g l y , a s i m i l a r v i e w to that e x p r e s s e d in last w e e k ' s letters page. B u t t o u g h , I still s t a n d b y m y v i e w s as e x p r e s s e d last w e e k .

T h i s w e e k ' s letters page has held these v i e w s u p , e s p e c i a l l y m y feeling that c o n t r a r y to t h e o p i n i o n s e x p r e s s e d in last w e e k ' s letters page, ie that the 'real m a n ' letter c o u l d n o t ' e n h a n c e or e n l i v e n ' F e l i x i n a n y w a y , i n fact it c o u l d . E.g. the t w o letters f r o m ' A R e a l W o m a n ' , w h i c h are f r o m t w o separate people, b y the w a y .

H o w e v e r , this is not w h a t I w a n t to talk about. It's just that these letters have b r o u g h t to light a n i n t e r e s t i n g p h e n o m e n a (he says, s o u n d i n g l i k e a scientist for the first time i n his life): H o w p e o p l e assume t h e sex of a p e r s o n f r o m their o p i n i o n s . F o r e x a m p l e , most p e o p l e have a s s u m e d that the ' R e a l M a n ' letter was written b y a man. Most people w h o have r e a d t h e ' R e a l W o m a n ' letters have assumed they were from a w o m a n . A l a n ' m y favourite p e r s o n i n t h e w h o l e u n i v e r s e , a n d I r e a l l y do t h i n k his v i e w points are so s e n s i b l e ' B a i l e y a s s u m e d that ' P e n d r a g o n ' was a w o m a n (he's a m a n - A d a m T i n w o r t h , the A r t s E d i t o r , in fact). S e v e r a l p e o p l e have h e l d v a r y i n g o p i n i o n s as to t h e gender of ' A t h e n a ' .

R e l i g i o n , G o d , etc W h a t are these guys/gals on? W h i l e I t r y h a r d to respect a n d u n d e r s t a n d the o p i n i o n s or beliefs of others, the a m o u n t of letters w e ' v e h a d f r o m v a r i o u s C h r i s t i a n s has t a k e n it's t o l l .

A s far as I'm c o n c e r n e d , if s o m e o n e w a n t s to a c c e p t that b y b e l i e v i n g in a s e m i - m y t h i c a l figure f r o m the past of the M i d d l e East, t h e n their souls w i l l be r e d e e m e d , that's fine b y m e . It gives p e o p l e s t r e n g t h a n d hope, a n d a l l o w s t h e m a n e x t e r n a l figure to t u r n to for these. A l l w e l l a n d good. But r e a l l y , w h e n t h e y act as if they're b e y o n d c r i t i c i s m , that t h e y ' r e a l w a y s right, a n d that e v e r y o n e w h o doesn't b e l i e v e is either (a) W r o n g (b) M i s l e a d (c) I m m o r a l (d) E v i l (e) In n e e d of c o n v e r t i n g O r a n y c o m b i n a t i o n of t h e a b o v e , that it r e a l l y starts to get o n m y nerves.
