Another year, another columnist, another bout of slagging off the medics. Well, maybe not. That's not the point of this one... this column is going to look right at the heart of this Union, week in and week out, and tell it like it is. Whether you, or Tasha Newton, likes it or not. Okay? Imperial, like a end of the year-many staircases had an unoffinumber of other institutions can enter two teams. Presently one team is organised by the Medic's Union, the other by ICU's quiz society. This year only the Medic's team, none of whom had any concrete links with IC, qualified for the televised rounds. University Challenge is a team game, which requires a team to win it, not four individuals. Students should form themselves into teams, which then compete against each other, in a centralised competition, with the best two teams going on to represent the college, regardless of C C U . Such a A Mostly Harmless Column by system would encourage diversity in backKevin, a random entity who grounds of the team members. scared of 'the residents'. Students are residents too, and perhaps we should follow the lead given to us by other universities where students have managed to drive the locals so mad with their student-y antics, that they have moved out of the area immediately surrounding the university. The property in this area then plummets in price and becomes affordable for students. Over time the students region of influence grows, usually until the students have conquered a large region of the town or city. Medic's names could be Mud by the time they've finished their degrees. Across Europe over the last few decades there has been an attempt to differentiate between academic and medical 'doctors'. It is likely that this trend will reach the UK in our lifetimes. One of Kevin's favourites is seen in The Czech Republic where a medical doctor's name is literally mud. A doctor who in the UK would be addressed, "Dr Mash", would in Czech be, "MUDr Mash". As for this year's Union Handbook, suffice to say Kevin hears it was proof-read by at least five different people. For more from Kevin: http:// come.to/mishmash

Kevin Rowland My Beauty (Creatiom)
David Bowie Hours (Virgin)
John Digweed Bedrock Mix (Virgin)
After leaving Dexy's Midnight Runners, Kevin Rowland spent 1 1 years as a cocaine addict and beggar. While I can see the mild attraction of the first pastime, I'd have rather cashed in on being one of the Runners earlier than Kevin has here, on this an album of specially selected cover versions. Kevin's also taken up cross dressinng, and aquired a good skill of chatting absolute shite. Apparently Kev made this album because he had to. All the ugliness in the world really took its toll on Kev, and it was only the beauty of the songs he has covered on this album that brought him back from the cold.
After dabbling in dance and other areas , Mr. Bowie has returned to a style much more similar to his earlier self. It seems he has tired of his continuous reinventioin in the front of the worlds media.
At a guess I'd say about sixty per cent of the students at this college own a John Digweed track. Hidden on the ridiculously popular Trainspotting soundtrack, is an absolute stormer of a track called For What You Dream Of. Written under his music-making pseudonym Bedrock this is John Digweed at his finest.
What? Moving from cocaine to cross dressing and from beggary to mouth farting does not sound like a move in the right direction to me. Indeed Kevin, you daydream believer you, I think you're just a bit of a wally. • • • • •
James
Titles such as "Survive", "The Pretty Things Are Going to Hell" and "What's Really Happening" don't suggest a Steps view on life. However, the album isn't a gloom fest - rather an acception of all that has gone before and a determination to make the future better. With its combination of rockabilly riffs and electronic beats "If I'm Dreaming My Life" he questions the very existance of a previous relationship - "was she ever really there at all?". All his practised years as a performer come to the surface, with many uses of the tried (or should that be tired?) and tested "Build it up, Knock it Down" tempo. The lyrics of "Seven" are only slightly brighter than the film of the same name. "Seven days to live my life or seven ways to die". The theme of introspection occurs again and again in the album. "The Pretty Things are Going To Hell" is unsuprisingly raw and shouty. Mid 80's softrock like in its production/with plenty of squealing guitar solos, this is one of the higlights of the album. "New Angels of Promise" darts between Chinese sounding flutes and modern rock, with a smattering of electronica thrown in for good measure. The clarity of Bowies voice continues to show up lesser vocalists, he manages to tread the thin line between tonefullness and tediousness with practisced skill. However, for all his vocal talent, even if he is an icon of the Twentyth century, for all his production skills, this album fails to convince. Maybe its because he's not an angry young man, or that hes not short of a bob or two but he just doesn't feel very relevant. This album feels like a bit of a purge, a bit of (admittedly very expensive) therapy for some past relationship. But do you really want to buy an album like that?
However making music is not only the only skill Mr Digweed has at his disposal. He's also one of the biggest name dj's on the circuit and with his own clubnight also called Bedrock John Digweed is not a man to be ignored! Next week also sees the man take the decks at the first birthday celebration of the Bedrock club at Heaven So where does that leave us with this mix then? Well much like Digweed's recent Heaven Scent single that sound of the mix moves from house to trance and back again with seamless ease as the well-mixed tunes ebb and flow under the control of the master. There's tunes from Heller & Farley, Interstate, Morel as well as the aforementioned which concludes the mix in a way that no other track could achieve. Unmissable, this is the club music that always pleases. • James Digweed

Lovely Daughter Epic Lame scratching, and a poor eighties sound make this quite an unlovely record. Merz have never impressed me much. I don't like the look of him, and this track certainly doesn't have the touch. It's like a man that feels like a woman. Know what I mean? Rubbish.
Ben & Jason Air Guitar G O ! Beat
Iggy Pop Corruption Virgin
Pavement Major Leagues Domino
Coming from their summer Emoticons album, Air Guitar is another classic Ben & Jason track. There's all the usual niceness and the track is modern day easy listening at it's finest. Although often accused of sounding like Radiohead in their early days Ben & Jason are definitely worth looking out for and if you've any cash from your Student Loan, getting your hands on this or one of their albums wouldn't be a bad idea.
A collaboration with Hollywood heartthrob Jonny Depp, Corruption is Iggy at his best. His singing is harsh and precise and the tunes is punky enough to get your bopping just a few seconds after the disc has begun to spin. Depp provides the guitar riffs that accompany Iggy's crooning, and he doesn't let his partner down with a sound as crunchy as Iggy's crispy vocals.
Pavement's recent Terror Twilight album was supposed to be the album we had all been waiting for. The hiring of a producer made the music much easier on the ear, but sadly something was lost in the alledged upgrade. Major Leagues is Pavement at their nicest, and as such it's not Pavement at their best. Give me a slanted and enchanted sound any day.

The Charlatans Forever Universal
Ian Brown Love Like a Fountain Sony Love Like a Fountain sings a new sound for Mr Brown. The voice is distorted, the beats are electro and there's enough squeaks and squiggles to satisfy even the most hungry listener. Sadly however all these sounds don't add up to a classic track, and Mr Brown would be better off sticking to a his trusty guitars and drums backing.
D
Embrace Hooligan Hut
Bernard Butler You Must G o On Creation
A Beckish sound from the boys who've been promising much for quite some time. Hooligan is a good track, but it's not of the standard Embrace claim to be capable of. The guitar strumming is nice, the singing is sweet and there's a great yeah yeah yeah bit, but even the extra use a kazoo doesn't lift the sound quite high enough. Please try harder boys.
Bernard Butler must be pretty gutted that he'll never make as good a record as he did with Suede or with collaborator David McAlmont. Indeed for Mr Butler making music is one of those things that should definitely remain a group activity. Having said that though, You Must Go On isn't a bad tune but it is horribly average and in a world where we seek perfection I'm afraid this isn't good enough.
D
With a new album Us & Us Only out next week, The Charlatans lay down the foundations well with Forever. Tim Burgess's voice smoothly sails the waves of funky bass and electro keyboards as the song cruises through it's five minute journey across the stereo. This bodes well for Us & Us Only and I'm witing with baited breath.

Bust-a-Gut Comedy This Friday sees this year's first show from the Union's acclaimed Bust-a-Gut comedy line-up, which over the course of the last few year's has featured some of the hottest new names on the national circuit, alongside established acts and Open Mic competitions. To give you a taster of what's in store, we've teamed up with promoters Avalon to profile the line up week by week, so you can get a feel for whether or not to take Granny along with you. We've also got details of this year's Open Mic competition for those of you who think you could do better, and later in the term we'll be bringing you advance details of special offers, prize draws and giveaways. For now, however, lets look at this week's line-up:
n
Lucy Potter
Chris A d d i s o n
Since reaching the finals of 1995's "So you think you're funny?" contest, Lucy has been tipped by many as a face of the future, thanks to her family-friendly (but nonetheless funny) routines and an impressive list of TV credits.
Something of a favourite at Imperial, Chris played here twice last year, going down a storm with his mixture of intelligent, student orientated gags, domineering approach and. love of Star Wars Lego.
The Daily Telegraph award is Britain's biggest stand-up competition, with victory universally providing an instant push into the standup elite (plus ÂŁ2000 and spots at the Melbourne and Montreal comedy festivals). Anyone can enter, provided they have never.been paid for a stand-up gig, are over 16 and have the determination to get out on stage and prove their comic credentials to an unsuspecting audience. To enter, just send your name address and phone number to : Daily Telegraph Open Mic Award, PO Box 13048, London W l 0 6 W Q Good luck - hope to see you at the semi-finals next May.
j u i c e DJ
Later this month the Union plays host to a local heat of the DJ2000 competition, but what the hell is it? Well, it's designed as a chance for every bedroom DJ to stop messing about in their room and get out there and earn some serious money. Contestants from across the country will be given the chance to show what they're made of and, even if they don't
win they'll meet the right people and gain loads of good contacts. One student from the IC heat will be chosen to go through to the regional final in November or December, and the final will take place next January in front of a judging panel of high-profile musical types (DJs, press, record execs etc) who .will select one overall winner to be crowned top student DJ for the new millenni-
as
The winner will then take away ÂŁ1000, a set of Vestax Decks & mixers, an agency deal and guaranteed bookings. The runners up will pick up cash and Vestax goodies. The sponsors of the competition are Red (the new alcopop infused with organic stimulants to keep you going) and Juice magazine. So say thank you. G o o d .

After finishing my degree i n C h e m . Eng. at Imperial, I took a rather extended six month holiday to go travelling i n Africa and South America. I climbed a few mountains, lazed on beaches and learned how uncomfortable twelve hour bus journeys could be. Since then I have started out on the first year of Unilever's graduate training programme, as an engineer.

So far this has involved project engineering at a margarine factory, where the biggest challenges were most definitely man management and influencing others. Since then I have been marketing Chicken Tonight. Now the products are far from glamorous but the working culture is great. Aside from the day to day work, there is a host of training courses to choose from,
some have a particular engineering focus and others are much more general business topics. As an engineer Unilever ensures that your training encompasses all the necessary areas to become chartered. What won me over to working for Unilever is the number of different areas of the business I would have an opportunity of working i n . After this experience I will be i n a much better position to know what part of the business suits me best. T h e best advice I can give for those unsure of which company to j o i n , is to meet as many people from a company as possible and ask yourself; would I want to work with them?
