PROPOSAL & OBJECTIVE 4 —

The 5th Rangsit University International Design Symposium

As designers we craft, make, and invent physical object, spaces, and visual images to cultivate a quality of life. Design is not an isolated object of beauty, but an integral part of everyday life. We have seen that design can be a powerful force that changes the way of life, behavior, culture, education, way of communication, and our perception of the world. The motivations behind what we design are very critical. Our questions, assumptions, experiments, and solutions have proven that design can improve lives and find powerful solutions for man and his environment. Our efforts have been successful, but there is still much more. We are re-learning, re-questioning, re-thinking, and will continue to re-invent our word with different design approaches that bring together technology, sustainability, crafts, politics, businesses, and much more. We have questions that we are pursuing and ideas that we are experimenting with to create changes. We believe that a designer’s work in progress should fight for good design. The 5th Rangsit University International Design Symposium entitled “Design Spectrum” is held under the collaboration of Rangsit University National and International Research Conference, the Faculty of Art and Design, the Faculty of Digital Art and the Council of Fine and Applied Arts Deans of Thailand, Our committee and participants are composed of professionals and academics from 9 countries - Thailand, Japan, India, China Hong Kong, The Netherlands , Germany, Spain, France, and the United States of America. “Spectrum”, principally, a design created with elements including line, shape, color, value and texture that are put together using principles of unity, variety, emphasis, balance and scale. Scientifically, spectrum is defined as a condition that is not limited to a specific set of values but can vary, without steps, across a continuum. Design spectrum in our sense refers to a principle of design varieties that contributes to a way to combine the visual elements to achieve elaborate and complex relationships in different angles. It reflects the varieties and diversity of the shape, space, color and light, to raise our cultural and socio-economic awareness of this vulnerable world.

Considering the rich and diverse complexity of relationships between design and spectrum, the International Design Symposium will be a platform for participants and valuable guests from various disciplines to further explore and share these research topics. The Faculty of Art and Design at Rangsit University would like to invite designers, artists, researchers, thinkers, innovators, and makers from various disciplines to join us and share their research, processes, art projects, views and opinions on how the design can change the world. OBJECTIVES To foster an academic collaboration among international institutions. To be a venue for researchers, designers, artists, thinkers, inventors, and makers from different disciplines to share their work in progress. To discuss ways to build an “Asia Style” sustainable society and to make understanding of our designer’s role and vision in order to create good design as nature does.

OPENING SPEECH FOR DEAN 2017

Vice President for Development and Financial Plans of Rangsit University, Dr. Attawit Ourairat, Vice Presidents, Deans, distinguished keynote speaker, Ms.Taeko Isu, distinguished participants, faculty members and students. As designers, our focus and efforts need to look beyond the object. The things we invent and improve are actually the starting point, not the finish line. We are talking about design as a starting point, as a catalyst, as a powerful force that effects behavior, communication, education, tradition, and as a result, our perception of the world. The motivations behind what we design are very critical. Our questions, assumptions, experiments, and solutions have proven that design can improve lives and find powerful solutions for man and his environment. Our efforts have been successful, but there is still much more. We are re-learning, re-questioning, and will continue to reinvent our world with different design approaches that bring, culture, technology, sustainability, crafts, politics, business, and much more. The Fifth Rangsit University International Design Symposium entitled “Design Spectrum” is held under the collaboration of Rangsit University National and International Research Conference, the Faculty of Art and Design, the Faculty of Digital Art and the Council of Fine and Applied Arts Deans of Thailand. Our committee and participants are composed of professionals and academics from 11 countries - Thailand, Japan, India, China, Hong Kong, The Netherlands, Germany, Spain, France, Italy and the United States of America. Our annual event aims to not only foster an academic collaboration among international institutions, but also serve as a platform for researchers, designers, artists, thinkers, inventors, and makers from all disciplines to share their ongoing work. “Design Spectrum” highlights a wide range of design disciplines. It explores the various interpretations that designers and artists employ to manifest their viewpoint and displays the countless possibilities that cross the boundaries in our work.

And today, we are here to celebrate the work of Ms. Taeko Isu, the art director of NNNNY, a design group consisting of editor, designer, illustrator and programmer. She works on various mediums, ranging from printed matters, website, spaces, movies, products and so on. In addition to her remarkable works including art direction of Japan’s leading department store PARCO and top artist band, The Yellow Monkey, she has been awarded RGB Prize and Tokyo Type Directors Club Annual Award in 2015. Her work reflects Japanese culture, so called “Shibuya Culture” very bold and daring, represent a new viewpoint of her own interpretation of a modern Japanese youth culture. I do hope that this sharing will be an inspiration to all of us to continue our work in progress. Lastly, on behalf of the Faculty of Art and Design, I’d like to take this opportunity to express my profound gratitude to Dr. Attawit Urairat, Vice President for Development and Financial Plans for his overwhelming support for this conference. I’d like to extend a special thank you to our executive committees for judging exhibition’s work, our guest keynoted speaker, and all of our friends from around the world who have made the effort to come to Thailand and to share their works in this conference. Thank you to all who shared their times and energy to make the conference possible. May I invite Dr. Attawit Urairat please kindly deliver an opening remarks. Thank you very much.

1971 – 1976 : Studies of art and history of art at the Accademy of Arts in Düsseldorf/Germany with Professors J. Beuys, R. Sackenheim, B. Kerber and W. Spies 1975 : master-class student of Prof. J.Beuys Exhibitions : During the sventies exhibitions in Essen, Frankfurt and Mönchengladbach. After completion of his studies he worked for about 20 years without any public appearance. Since 2000 : Picking up again on exhibition activities he had continuous exhibitions e.g. at Kunstverein Erkelenz, Kulturbahnhof Nettersheim, Kunstturm Amern, kunstraumno.10, BIS, Museum Schloss Rheydt, Galerie Artwork Viersen and Galerie Slowboy in Düsseldorf. He is also regularly participating in the yearly two day ‘open atelier’ event of his hometown Mönchengladbach. About his art : Similar to sampling in music Michael Beckers re-composes and re-arranges in a kind of crossover activity existing pictures and fragments of pictures from totally different contexts into his paintings. In his art Kirchner meets Comic, Abstract Expressionism meets pictograms or a newspaper clip photograph meets children’s toys. During that process he creats new and unique sceneries that generally don’t allow any unambivalent interpretation.

On August 22, 2016 I started a time based art project using thing from my overwhelming accumulated stash; things too good to throw away but nobody wants. Finally, I got up the courage to do away with these things holding me back. I decided to hang them outside and let nature take charge, I added a few textiles at a time to a frame, timidly at first, bringing some things back inside. Stepping in an ant bed the first day resulted in several painful bites,s reinforcing that the project is hard in many ways. It hurts to get rid of things while useless to keep them. The Project progressed and defined itself. I randomly photographed the pieces and made journal entries, Connections happened. A clothesline emerged. I gathered clothesline photos I’d taken on trips over many years (to me, the “real” part of a country), printed them on organza, and added hand embellishment. Nature did tis part in her relentless way. Long drought conditions bleached the pieces in strong sun but changed them little. A huge windstorm in November blew several pieces to the ground to remain where they fell. Winter rains and freezing conditions began to do their job. The first part of the project will end December 22, four months after it started when parts of the pieces will be cut up and added to the bundles project.

Now I am locking down the space and recording marking it horizontally and vertically - but without concern for the landscape. That would be making a pictorial space. I am moving the space locking it down with two colours. A flattened space. There is a silence in this space. Perhaps something could be planed for this grid? No that would end up being architecture. I am cutting into it but not puncturing these grids it is being intersected with texture and drops of colours. Now there is sound and a kind of structure between these two surfaces. But it’s not that, then it would be music. I am moving the same colours at the same time across this series. I am trying for a system - a process for success. But its not that, that would be design. Now Im trying to make a process but the process always breaks. History. Now I am breaking it, I am filling the spaces the spaces between you and it. It is in this space and the intersections of all these spaces that makes the Painting become a painting. A zero space for the future.

“STAY HIP, RECYCLE AND UPCYCLE” Innova Center seeks to be a co-working space in which people can find everything they need to work in multiple areas and also places of entertainment, promoting the exchange of knowledge among professionals. In an old two-floor house, located in one of the most important office areas of the city, Quito-Ecuador. The target is the generation of millennials, entrepreneurs who seek a space to develop their ideas and make contacts with people of different specialties. The design results in a flexible and fun place to be in, with several areas for activities.

As people become more environmentally and socially aware about the choices they make, they look for new

trends like good quality, stylish and low impact products. This place responds to different preferences to attract the new generations. The design concept blends with the local environment, integrating natural elements and textures contrasting with the modern side of the city, represented by bright and fun colors that awaken people’s senses. In addition, in contrary to globalized technological world we live in, all the spare areas of the house are designed to promote book swapping and stimulating relaxing activities.

Modern meets sustainable, demonstrating the potential of putting waste material to stylish or new use. a r t ist & d e s i g n e r i n e x h i b i t i o n

Increasing population, lack of available land, and shriveled economic conditions are three of the biggest issues plaguing the metropolis of Beijing, China. These issues have caused a serious drop in the standards of living, forcing architects and engineers to conceive innovative solutions to improve the quality of life for Beijing residents. The construction of prefabricated micro-apartment towers has fast become a popular trend due to the quick construction process and space saving advantages. By combining the design strategy of the prefabricated Nakagin Capsule Tower with the flexible living space of Domestic Transformer, we can introduce a new generation of customizable apartments. The highly flexible design of each apartment will allow residents the opportunity to alter and expand the space according to their needs, allowing them to maximize space and improve their living experience. The resulting tower prototype will be a prefabricated and replicable residential tower with replaceable modules inserted via pre-existing slots of the tower structure.

The forest is the most valuable and useful asset to our mankind, it indirectly helps to prevent a natural disaster. Therefore, I need to share the responsibility to save the forest from all sorts of calamities, as an artist, is the process of bringing back to life the normal condition of nature. To focus on everyone contributing their responsibilities and awareness to protect, save, love the trees by replacing the ones which have been destroyed.By leaving such a tragic end to nature when there is a calamity. Representing the reflection of the result of how nature once appeared by re-creating the parts of the trees as a dreamlike existence of the trees that spring to life from the dead ones.

Nature is something that is linked to human, especially the flowers that help to create beauty to the world. Flowers are comparable to human mental nourishment. The greenness of the grass and colorful blossom leaves is a sense of relaxation. Such as purple, in theoretically it is the color of caring for the heart to calm and endure the feelings of sadness or loss of mind. Purple shades is also helps to restore the balance of the mind from sorrow. Indigo is a color that has the power to stimulate the brain to be furious, encourages creativity and instincts. Green is the symbolic of a new beginning. Also heal the mind to feel refreshed, relaxed, etc. To create a piece of art by bringing flowers to inspire. It is also help to create peace and relax the mind of the creator too. Using a ‘shadow applique’ technique that uses a thickness of different fabrics to overlap each other to create light and shade. From the theme “Design Spectrum”, I interpreted the meaning of the dispersion of light by using the concept from my impression when I had opportunity to visit Naples Florida, United State of America. I sat back and watched the sunset with the orange light that touched the water surface, the sea surface and the sand. It brought these memories into the art of wearing. The idea is to bring art combined with fashion design through the crochet techniques. I choose materials with light reflectance to represent the concept of light dispersion, ie, copper wire, crystals. Use crochet techniques to represent waves that hit the sand, to make the surface see through by using copper wire and the reflection of the crystals. Crochet techniques until the copper wire take a dress form.

FASHION DESIGN / 08 / SEKSARIT THANAPRASITTIKUL / Title : “What Remains Is Future”, 2017 / Techniques and materials : Traditional tailoring techniques, such as basting stitches, padding and hand-sewing are used. Basting stitches are left on the piece in order to reflect the beauty of what remains from the process of making clothes. / THAILAND

— 57 —

The project is a visualization of how beautiful future can be created from what remains, in other words, new design can be created from the remaining parts. As the idea is reinterpreted in fashion context, the design process focuses on experimental approach, involving the integration of left-over fabric pieces remaining from cutting fabric into the construction of clothing. The experimental approach allows new possibilities in design process. Unlike working on 2-dimensional sketches in usual fashion design, the process significantly requires 3-dimensional experiment to integrate the left-over pieces into the construction of the garment. In addition, unusual shapes of those left-over pieces become a key component that results in new design, creating unexpected shapes, forms and construction.

Then, some creativity and imagination was added in order to create wild pictures aimed at conveying the feeling of connection to nature. When we see nature and understand its importance, we will care and preserve it. We will protect trees, big and small, bushes and seasonal plants, along with other natural elements. And this nature will return its support for us, such as cleaning the air and giving shades. That is the nature sees us. The technique used in this collection is “Digital Photo Collage & Montage.

Introduction A society with faith in Dharma is a society of peace, despite racial diversity. Faith in Dharma can be conveyed through symbols, which also represent one’s belief in their own truth. Objectives, Aims and Purposes Faith in Dharma was conveyed through religious symbols, which were disguised in different shapes and forms. All parts combined, just like all aspects of community that bonded to create a society of faith. That is how it was in the old days. Just like mulberry paper, faith is so fragile that, if carelessly taken, it could be torn. When the drive for commercial purposes beats the ambition for wisdom and truth, faith in one’s own identity could be broken.

Nike flagship store at Siam Square One is considered to be the prime strategic location for Nike Thailand. Due to its location, a Landmark was created to emphasize its significance. The central concept of this Landmark is the integration between the local (Thai) culture and the global (headquarter) culture. The “Thainess” features were incorporated into the masterpiece, culturally wise, creating a good association among the local and the global. The purpose of the Landmark is to create an online social diffusion among Thai and foreign customers. The benefit of the in-store Landmark is two-fold. Firstly, when customers post these Landmark pictures on social network, they are promoting Nike brand. Secondly, it helps connect the in-store marketing to the outside world (eg. social media). Moreover, through the help of social media, local marketing can spread worldwide. This occurrence has never happened before in the field of Visual Communication in Thailand. a r t ist & d e s i g n e r i n e x h i b i t i o n

Introduction : The frequency range of the electromagnetic spectrum that is visible to the human eye (and which we refer to as ‘color’) is a very small region in the entire range of photon energies we have observed in nature. A development in Western practices dating back to the 1940s is to associate each one of the seven chakras to a given color and a corresponding crystal. Patricia Mercier introduces the relation of colors and physiomotional functions for each of the seven main chakras. Objectives Aims or Purposes : To reveal the Spectrum of light that related to the Human body. Conclusion : The seven colors of the spectrum are related to the human body especially the human health, as described in the Ayurvedic for more than 5,000 years ago.

This set of art pieces aims at finding out the feasibility of the new concept

of visual storytelling. The experiment sets the origin of the visual images to come from the elements of architecture, the art form which has extremely different style and usage from the other kinds of art and is not intended to tell the story before. The research will interpret those visual elements of architecture, select the noticeable pieces, transfer the concept of narrative into them by methods of digital art, and compose them with each other. The origin of the story, with these processes, did not come from a tale, literary, or character; but it came from visual elements that are interpreted. The scope of the study is analyzing related information to create a set of visual art hybrid in order to achieve narrative and communication. The result of the experiments is that architectural elements can be applied to be the starting points of various sequential picture story types.

Creativity is the force behind all human creation. This writing discusses the importance of creative processes in general and demonstrates its role in my multimedia work in collaboration with composer Jiradej Setabundhu—I Cross a Very Large Distance—focusing on the creative challenges which I believed every artist has to confront when creating any new work. The writing begins with a general observation of creativity before proceeding to examine the ideas, problems, and solutions behind the work.

The word “peace” is differently defined according to a social context. Tranquility and nonviolence are part of its definitions. A society is made up with different ethnic and religious groups together with sets of law and regulations, which are constructed to conduct human activities and dictate what they can or cannot do. Everyman in every era yearns for tranquility and peace so they could harmoniously live. But if we consider what really have happened from the past until now, we might realize that sometimes unorthodox thinking leads to conflict; and conflict leads to violence and threatened force which finally end with loss. So a question arises: to whom the pacification we fight for belongs, whether political reconciliation is just temporary; where the true peace dwells or if ‘peace’ we struggle for just only ideally exists -- peace keeps dancing in human mentality like a highest form of performance that conceals the weariness and despair towards the society we involve
