Saint Mary’s Regional Health System Continuing to earn top rankings for patient safety by national organizations Saint Mary’s Regional Health System continues to be recognized for safe, quality patient care by national and state organizations. Over the past two years, the Russellvillebased acute care facility was recognized as a leader among Arkansas and U.S. hospitals — regardless of size or prominence — in the areas of safety, quality care and improved performance.
Saint Mary’s Regional Medical Center recognized for Outstanding Record in Patient Safety — Awarded an “A in Fall 2015 Hospital Safety Score In the fall of 2015, the independent hospital watchdog The Leapfrog Group, announced that Saint Mary’s Regional Health System, once again earned an A in this elite national ratings program, recognizing the hospital’s strong commitment to patient safety. The Hospital Safety Score is the gold standard rating for patient safety. The organization rates how well hospitals prevent medical errors, injuries and infections within the hospital. The hospital is one of only three hospitals in the state to be recognized with an ‘A’ during this measurement period. Saint Mary’s is the only hospital in the state of Arkansas to receive an “Aâ€? ranking every year since the Hospital Safety Score was first released in the Spring of 2012. Saint Mary’s is proud to be named among the safest hospitals in Arkansas and the nation,â€? said Jim Davidson, Saint Mary’s Chief Executive Officer. “This recognition was achieved through ongoing process improvement and a strong culture of teamwork and caring. There is no doubt that our team of dedicated health care professionals work to keep patients safe while conveying a caring attitude and applying skills and knowledge to expedite healing. “It is this commitment that makes Saint Mary’s the patients’ choice for healthcare in our region,â€? he continued. “I am extremely proud of our employees and medical staff for their abiding commitment to providing the best care possible for our patients. This award represents their dedication to living out Saint Mary’s mission statement — that is, ‘to bring health to life through people caring for people.’ Our patients and their families can be assured they will receive the highest standard of safe, quality care at Saint Mary’s, delivered with courtesy and compassion.â€? “Saint Mary’s A grade is a powerful reminder of its commitment to putting patient safety above all else, and we are pleased to recognize the persistent efforts of your clinicians and staff to protect your patients,â€? said Leah Binder, president and CEO of The Leapfrog Group, which administers the Hospital Safety Score. “our families, neighbors, colleagues and friends deserve a hospital that will pull out all the stops to keep them safe.â€? Tim Copeland, Chief Quality Officer said “We are very pleased that our ongoing efforts in the area of patient safety have again earned our hospital an ‘A’ ranking. Physicians, nurses, pharmacists, engineering, environmental services‌it takes an entire team, aligned and focused
on delivering the highest quality care to every patient, every time. We are proud of the quality care we provide and honored to receive this well-earned, national recognition from The Leapfrog Group because of the high standards they uphold. Saint Mary’s Chief Nursing Officer Carol Gore explained “We are proud of the exceptional care we provide our patients. Our nurses and clinicians follow evidence-based, best practices and strive to deliver safe, compassionate care to every patient. This honor means a great deal to our staff and the patients we serve. We are very happy to be recognized for our high performance. Developed under the guidance of Leapfrog’s Blue Ribbon Expert Panel, the Hospital Safety Score uses 28 measures of publicly available hospital safety data to produce a single “A, “B, “C, “D, or “F score representing a hospital’s overall capacity to keep patients safe from preventable harm. More than 2,500 U.S. general hospitals were assigned scores in October 2015, with 773 hositals receiving an “A grade. The Hospital Safety Score is fully transparent, with a full analysis of the data and methodology used in determining grades available online. “Patient safety needs to be a 24-7 priority for hospitals, as errors and infections are all too common and often deadly, said Leah Binder, president and CEO of The Leapfrog Group, which administers the Hospital Safety Score. “We commend the ‘A’ hospitals, including Saint Mary’s Regional Medical Center for helping us to raise the standards of health care nationwide, and demonstrating that they’ve made the well-being of patients a top priority.
Saint Mary’s Regional Medical Center earns ‘Top Performer on Key Quality Measures’ Recognition from The Joint Commission Saint Mary’s Regional Medical Center has been recognized as a Top Performer on Key Quality Measures by The Joint Commission, the leading accreditor of health care organizations in the United States. Saint Mary’s was recognized as part of The Joint Commission’s 2014 annual report “America’s Hospitals: Improving Quality and Safety,
for attaining and sustaining excellence in accountability measure performance for: • Heart Attack • Pneumonia • Surgical Care Saint Mary’s is one of 1,224 hospitals in the United States to achieve the Top Performer distinction. The Top Performer program recognizes hospitals for improving performance on evidence-based interventions that increase the chances of healthy outcomes for patients with certain conditions, including heart attack, heart failure, pneumonia, surgical care, children’s asthma, stroke, venous thromboembolism and perinatal care, as well as for inpatient psychiatric services and immunizations. Top Performer hospitals had to meet three performance criteria based on accountability measure data, including: • Achieving cumulative performance of 95 percent or above across all reported accountability measures; • Achieving performance of 95 percent or above on each and every reported accountability measure where there were at least 30 denominator cases; and • Having at least one core measure set that had a composite rate of 95 percent or above, and (within that measure set) all applicable individual accountability measures had a performance rate of 95 percent or above. “Delivering the right treatment in the right way at the right time is a cornerstone of high-quality health care. I commend the efforts of Saint Mary’s for their excellent performance on the use of evidence-based interventions,â€? said Mark R. Chassin, M.D., FACP, M.P.P., M.P.H., president and CEO, The Joint Commission. “We understand what matters most to patients at Saint Mary’s is the quality and safety of the care they receive. That is why we have made it a top priority to improve positive patient outcomes through evidence-based care processes,â€? said Mike McCoy, Saint Mary’s Chief Operating Officer. “It is truly an honor to be named a Top Performer as it recognizes the knowledge, teamwork and dedication of our entire hospital staff.â€?
Saint Mary’s Regional Medical Center wins Quality Award Arkansas
Foundation for Medical Care Recognizes Excellence in Health Care Saint Mary’s has earned a Hospital CAUTI Reduction Award in the Arkansas Foundation for Medical Care’s (AFMC) annual Quality Awards program. The Quality Awards recognize improvement in individual health care organizations’ performance in AFMC’s quality improvement projects. The Hospital CAUTI Reduction Award recognizes hospitals that have committed to focus efforts in the reduction of catheter-associated urinary tract infections (CAUTI). At the statewide meeting Saint Mary’s Chief Quality Officer Tim Copeland and Infection Control Nurse, Monica Baxter, RN were asked to present a case study regarding how Saint Mary’s reduced urinary tract infections and how the hospital sustained that improvement. AFMC congratulates Saint Mary’s on its commitment to high-quality health care for the citizens of Arkansas.
Saint Mary’s Regional Medical Center recognized for work in statewide HEN Collaborative to Improving Care to Save Lives Saint Mary’s Regional Medical Center has been a participating member of the Hospital Engagement Network (HEN) through the Arkansas Hospital Association. As one of forty-five hospitals who have participated in the AHA/ HRET HEN to reduce hospital acquired conditions by 40% and readmissions by 20%, Saint Mary’s has contributed to an estimated reduction of 2144 events and a savings of $10,887,934 across the state through this HEN. The Health Engagement Network initiative is focused on: • Reducing hospital acquired Adverse Drug Events • Central Line Associated Blood Stream Infections • Catheter Associated Urinary Tract Infections • Falls • Early Elective Deliveries • Obstetric Harm • Pressure Ulcers • Readmissions • Venous Thromboembolism (Blood Clots) • Ventilator Associated Conditions, and • Surgical Site Infections,
Saint Mary’s is one of 28 Hospitals recognized for meeting the goals set by CMS in 80% of the topics which impacts their patients. “This demonstrates Saint Mary’s full commitment to quality care and to providing the safest environment for our patients to receive that care, said Tim Copeland, Saint Mary’s Chief Quality Officer. The AHA/HRET HEN is one of 26 HENs as part of the Partnership for Patients created under the Affordable Care Act. As part of this work, Saint Mary’s Regional Medical Center, as well as approximately 3700 hospitals across the country has been exposed to a wealth of knowledge, resources and tools. It has created a nationwide infrastructure for health care improvement and for achieving the national goals of Better Health, Improved Health care and Lower Costs. “Arkansas hospitals have embraced this work and have shown the importance of providing high quality, safe care. We could not have seen these great results without the commitment of those hospitals who care for patients in their communities, commented Bo Ryall, President of the Arkansas Hospital Association. Saint Mary’s is also one of only six hospitals in the state and one of 233 hospitals in the nation to meet the national improvement goals and meet reduction goals on 90% or more of their applicable topics on national or state aligned measures.

After being in the same location for 45 years, the family decided it was time to build a new modern facility. In 1996 the new facility was completed in Morrilton. Both of JB’s sons started in the family business at age 14, working in the service department. JB passed away in 2004 leaving the dealership to his sons Johnny (John B. Maus III) and Jeff Maus. Rose Drug Pharmacy Gifts and More
Unique Gifts for all Occasions
WHAT MORE COULD YOU ASK FOR? A locally owned pharmacy with an emphasis on family is happy to have served our community for over 45 years. Owners Michael and Margie Smith of Rose Drug of Russellville state that original owner Ivan Rose incorporated Rose Drug in 1966 and started building the current building established his pharmacy in the late 1960’s. It was important to Mr. Rose to continue this independent pharmacy next to the Millard Henry Clinic and upon his sudden death the store was offered to the existing Manager Mr. Gary Denton per his instructions. Several years passed under Mr. Denton’s ownership. After communications between Mr. Denton and Mr. Smith developed in 1984 the merger of Smith’s Skyline Pharmacy and Rose Drug became a reality. In 2013 Mr. Denton’s decision to retire and offer his stock (ownership portion) to Mike and Margie Smith to purchase as sole owners of Rose Drug of Russellville also began a new era. “We strive to provide a family atmosphere for both our customers and staff. Several of our employees have been with us for 10 to 20 years”, Mike Smith reports. “Also, our sons (Chris and Nathan) were raised and even worked at the pharmacy as young men are now married with their own children (Oden, Declan and Judah) who have been known to greet customers occasionally. The addition of our daughters in law (Jessica and Ashley) has made our family complete.” He added. We are proud to be a part of this community and have contributed our time energy to supporting the school district and community leaders. We are part of this community and want to be your family pharmacy. It is our pleasure to make your pharmacy experience convenient and satisfying. BRINGING REVOLUTIONARY NON-INVASIVE CARE TO THE RIVER VALLEY Revolutionary care means maximum clarity with minimized exposure to radiation. Saint Mary’s is the first hospital in the region to use the powerful new GE Optima CT660 128-Slice Computed Tomography (CT) scanner. This state-of-the-art technology can scan the entire body in mere seconds – far faster than a conventional CT scanner. For patients requiring cardiac, brain or peripheral vascular examinations, the 128-slice CT provides increased speed, reduced radiation dosage, detailed diagnostic information, and greater convenience. Frey Paints and Coatings What’s in a name? Chad Freyaldenhoven has witnessed many changes in the paint and coatings business since his family’s purchase of a local paint store in 1986. Changing color trends, more durable paints with easier application, new roller cover fabrics and brush filaments and computerized sales software only begin to scratch the surface. But the biggest change has occurred in the last month: their new name.
Introducing Frey Paints and Coatings “We’ve been known as D & R Paints for almost 30 years, so this is a major change for us. We wanted our name to emphasize our local familyowned heritage and dedication to the communities we serve,” Freyaldenhoven said. “I think the change to Frey Paints & Coatings achieves both those goals. The feedback from our customers has been overwhelmingly positive.” Freyaldenhoven stressed that although the name on the sign above the door has changed, the ownership and staff of the stores remain the same. “David McBride and I are still here at the Russellville store, and Marvin Pearson is still at our Clarksville location,” he said. “The only difference is we now answer the phone ‘Frey Paints and Coatings.’”
Their latest addition: Benjamin Moore Paint “We’re really excited about the addition of Benjamin Moore to our paint line,” Freyaldenhoven said. “Benjamin Moore is recognized for outstanding quality and we’re thrilled to offer their exciting products to our customers. The Aura line with exclusive Color Lock technology makes true, two-coat coverage with even the deepest shades of red and yellow a reality. Advance, a waterborne alkyd, gives you look and durability of a traditional alkyd, but with all the application advantages of a latex paint: low odor, fast dry, with soap and water cleanup.”
Products and services Have you ever gone back to a paint store for another gallon of your living room paint, only to get it home and discover it hasn’t been mixed correctly and the color doesn’t match? You don’t have that problem if it was purchased from Frey Paints & Coatings. “We maintain a detailed permanent color record on every gallon our customers purchase,” Freyaldenhoven said. “We hired a computer programmer to build our custom Color Record System to our exact specifications, which allows us to track every gallon of paint, including the product, color formula and what part of the room it was used in. This allows us to provide
our customers with the exact same paint in the exact same color when they need another gallon.” Along with its recently added Benjamin Moore Paint, Frey also offers a full line of paints, coatings and stains from PPG Paints, PPG Pittsburgh Paints, PPG High Performance Coatings, Devoe High Performance Coatings, Lenmar Lacquers and Sikkens Wood Finishes. Complementing these paint brands is a complete range of sundries and accessories from Wooster Brush Co., UGL, Tower Sealants and Phoenix Tapes, and airless spray equipment from Graco, Titan, Airlessco and TriTech. Frey even offers airless paint sprayer service and warranty repair.
The beginnings Freyaldenhoven said he grew up in the paint store and began working on a full-time basis in 1999 when he decided to go back to college. He said it was only supposed to be until he graduated, then his father, Ed, was going to sell the business and retire. However, Freyaldenhoven said while attending college, he discovered he really enjoyed the business, environment and people. Eventually he began to enter-
tain the idea of buying out his father. “I graduated from ATU in December 2002 and began to needle Dad to sell out to me,” Freyaldenhoven said. “It took four years of constant badgering, but he finally agreed in early 2006.” After graduation in 2002, he went on to earn a Protective Coatings Specialist certification (an industrial coatings certification) from SSPC: The Society for Protective Coatings in 2004 and started focusing on the industrial side of paint and coatings. Ed remained with the company and continued to take care of the architectural aspect of the business, as well as running the day-today operations of the store. On May 31, 2006, Freyaldenhoven purchased the business from his father so Ed could pursue retirement.
Growth and success In 2008, Freyaldenhoven began making preparations to open another location in the Clarksville area. He and his father had discussed the possibility a few years prior, but there was already a dealer in the area. However, opportunity soon presented itself and on March 15, 2008, Frey Paints & Coatings opened another store
in Clarksville. “Marvin Pearson had worked for my father in the mid ’90s and had become a good family friend,” Freyaldenhoven said. “A couple times a month he would stop by the store on Saturday mornings for a cup of coffee. He had been working for a lumber yard in Clarksville for the last 10 years, so he knew the market and its players well. When the opportunity arose for opening a store there, he was a natural fit with his experience and history as both a salesman and a contractor in the building industry. Our Clarksville store has seen substantial growth ever since its first year.”
Keep it honest Freyaldenhoven said his father built the business on honesty and integrity, which is the guiding principle he strives to maintain. “Of all the things he taught me, the one that sticks hardest in my mind is, ‘always keep it honest,’” Freyaldenhoven said. “That has been the guiding principle since the beginning and still holds true today. We apply this principle in all our business dealings with customers and vendors alike. Honesty and integrity build good relationships and are the founda-
tion that trust is laid upon.”
It’s all about the customer Freyaldenhoven said customer service is their No. 1 priority. Staff provides customers with the best professional service and the best products at the best price. Frey Paints & Coatings is a paint store, not a paint department. They do not sell flooring, lumber or shingles. Paints and coatings are what they do. “We are also locally owned and operated,” Freyaldenhoven said. “Therefore, 100 percent of our profit stays in the Arkansas River Valley. We’re proud to support Main Street Mission, Boy Scouts of America and other local organizations.”
Location, location, location Frey Paints & Coatings has two locations to serve its customers, 905 E. Main St. in Russellville and 1003 S. Rogers Ave. in Clarksville. “No matter where you are in the Arkansas River Valley or what your paint requirements are, Frey Paints & Coatings has the products, service and professional staff to take care of all your needs,” he said.

Community Libraries Good Investment in Pope County Indirect Benefits to Pope County The Pope County Library System’s four libraries provide both direct and indirect benefits to the community. Indirect benefits include: the use of libraries help to create a literate population; offer a gathering place, are for everyone at every stage of their life, and level the playing field by providing equal access to information regardless of intellect or income. Direct Benefits to Pope County Direct benefits include services received by library users from the use of books, music, films, reference material, and electronic databases, as well as the estimated value received when librarians answered reference questions. County Employer The PCLS employees 43 individuals in its 4 libraries in positions as librarians, and clerks, in fulltime, and part-time roles. 98% of the employees live in Pope County. This means that employees are spending a significant proportion of their salary locally, supporting Pope County’s economy. Not only are the wages, operating and capital expenditures infused into the local economy but they also have a ripple effect as the dollars are re-spent. Personal services makes up 71% or $966,537.26 of the County Library Fund’s $1.3 million operating budget. Book purchases made up 10% and had a return of $7.919 million dollars in 2015. 14% of the fund us used for Maintenance & Operations of the libraries. During 2015, 98 volunteers donated 2,678 hours saving the System $59,290.92. Patrons used the libraries’ 29 computers 44,434 times. 92,146 reference and informational questions were answered. 158,353 patrons physically visited, and there were 84,998 virtual visits to the libraries as the economy continued to recover. The system’s 31,928 patrons circulated the libraries 117,326 volumes 305,079 times. The collection “turned over” 2.60 times. At an average cost of $25 per book, Citizens of Pope County saved $7.627 million dollars in book purchases alone. Programming increased 24% in 2015 with the participation of the Teen & Tween Advisory Boards. Number of full-text articles downloaded from PCLS’s 28 databases that are provided by the Arkansas State Library (ASL) are not available statistically. Saint Mary’s Regional Medical Center Superior technology enhances quality care
Saint Mary’s Regional Medical Center is a full-service acute care, regional referral center for the River Valley region and beyond. Founded in 1926, it has been the area’s health care leader for 90 years. Saint Mary’s is accredited by the Joint Commission and owned by Capella Healthcare, Inc. The hospital is licensed as a 170bed acute care facility. Saint Mary’s provides patients with some of the most advanced technology and medical services available, many of which are usually found only in larger, metropolitan hospitals. Saint Mary’s has a medical staff of more than 100 active physicians representing more than 18 medical specialties. Key services include: • 24-hour physician-staffed emergency department • Cardiac catheterization and echocardiogram services • Cardiac and diagnostic nuclear medicine • 128-slice CT and CT angiography • Cardiopulmonary and respiratory services • Medical and radiation oncology • Diagnostic and vascular ultrasound • Digital mammography services • MRI • Hyperbaric oxygen therapy and wound care management services • Inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation services • Intensive care unit • Laboratory services • Inpatient and outpatient surgery • Orthopedics services • Adult behavioral health • Sleep study lab • Women’s and Children’s services • Venous ablation services • Urology Saint Mary’s Regional Medical Center has significantly enhanced the healthcare technology available to the River Valley, and remains committed to investing in superior systems, ensuring long-term access to quality care for the patients we serve.
The region’s first 128-Slice CT scanner
At a cost of $1.2 million, Saint Mary’s is the first hospital in the region to offer and fully utilize the powerful, new GE Optima CT660 128-Slice Computed Tomography (CT)
“Improving accessibility to safe, high quality health care is an ongoing goal of Saint Mary’s Regional Health System. As our region grows, and as many individuals and families gain access to coverage, Saint Mary’s is well positioned to provide enhanced access to some of the best diagnostic and treatment technologies as well as more physicians in more specialties. We are committed to meeting the growing medical needs of the communities we serve well into the future.” Mike McCoy Chief Operating Officer scanner, revolutionizing noninvasive procedures including coronary angiography. The high-speed scanner provides physicians with the ability to see more anatomical detail at a lower radiation dose, in a fraction of the time previously required with conventional CT. The machine can scan the whole body in seconds and provide incredibly sharp 3D images of any organ. This technology has been particularly effective for studying the beating heart. CT angiography utilizing the 128-slice Optima CT provides clear non-invasive images of the heart and its major vessels. The scans can help determine whether either fatty deposits or calcium deposits have built up in the coronary arteries, which supply blood to the heart muscle. Also, the scans canbe timed to use only images gathered between contractions, so that the heart and its vessels can be seen without blurring caused by motion. For patients requiring a CT examination, and in particular for those requiring cardiac, brain or peripheral vascular examination, the 128–slice Optima CT660 scanner provides increased speed, reduced radiation dosage, detailed diagnostic information, greater convenience and improved patient comfort. “This new technology will give us more versatility in our imaging protocols,” said invasive cardiologist Dr. Shuja Rasool. “Rather than a onescan-fits-all approach, we tailor each exam to meet the patient’s specific needs.”
The latest in MRI technology Patient expectations of MRI have shifted in recent years to
an enhanced and more comfortable scanning experience. As part of its mission to exceed expectations, Saint Mary’s recently made the GE Optima MR450w, a powerful MRI system, available to patients in the region. This technology offers increased comfort paired with exceptionally sharp, highresolution images. “This is the most accurate MRI imaging tool in the region. This system offers excellent images for more definitive diagnosis and meets the patient demand for a more comfortable experience,” said Imaging Director Ken Dilday. The GE Optima MR450w,a $1.6 million investment, shares the spotlight with several advanced technologies at Saint Mary’s.
New nuclear medicine technology Additionally, Saint Mary’s has installed two GE Discovery NM360 nuclear medicine imaging cameras. Valued at nearly$385,000, thecameras and re-designed facility place the hospital among the leaders in nuclear medicine imaging technology statewide. Nuclear medicine cameras provide very precise images of the area of the body being imaged. The more precise the information healthcare providers can obtain about a patient’s condition, the more effectively that patient can be treated. With improved efficiency and speed, these cameras allow for scan times and doses as low as half that of standard nuclear medicine protocols.
Cardiac and Vascular Care Center – Leadership, Physicians & technology
Investing nearly $3 million in life-saving cardiac and limbsaving catheterization technologies, Saint Mary’s completed capital improvements in two state-of-the-art Cardiac Catheterization Labs for diagnostic and interventional cardiovascular and vascular procedures. Saint Mary’s has assembled a dedicated team of cardiac specialists devoted to providing outstanding cardiac care, right here at home. These highly-trained, board-certified cardiologists include Medical DirectorDr. Sastry Prayaga and Dr. Ravishankar Kalaga, both interventional cardiologists, plus Drs. Dai-Yuan Wang and ShujaRasool, both invasive cardiologists. These physicians make life-saving cardiac care available in the River Valley. Their practice, Cardiology Associates of North Central Arkansas, can be reached at 479-968-4311.
unit – to the physician’s smartphone or tablet. The program works with a variety of mobile devices, is cleared by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, and meets support compliance with federal patient privacy regulations. “AirStrip OB offers a crucial layer of protection and helps look after the comfort, safety and security of patients,” said Sherry McClure, director of Saint Mary’s Women’s and Children’s department. “No matter the demands of the day or a physician’s location, doctors can closely watch their patients who are in labor and can be in a position to react immediately to a change in situation. That will contribute to improved patient care.”
Advanced technology provides improved patient-care communications Saint Mary’s is in the process of installing an advanced patient communications system replacing the traditional patient call lights. “This system will greatly improve patientcare communications and enhance patient safety,” stated Carol Gore, CNO. “Our top priority is always to focus on patient safety and quality patient outcomes. This technology provides care management tools allowing our nursing staff to provide an even higher level of care, helping to improve the overall patient experience.”
Additional equipment AirStrip OB App helps doctors monitor labor Saint Mary’s Regional Medical Center recently launched a cutting-edge mobile patientmonitoring program that allows Saint Mary’s obstetriciangynecologists (Ob-Gyns)to keep a closer eye on labor and delivery patients. The program provides them with immediate access to important data, patient safety information and treatment. The hospital is the first healthcare facility in the River Valley region to acquire the AirStrip OB technology that helps obstetricians closely monitor women in labor. The technology delivers live vital patient data – including fetal heart rate, maternal contraction patterns, along with vital signs and nursing notes from Saint Mary’s labor and delivery
In the Surgical Services department, Saint Mary’s installed new laparoscopic surgical equipment, a purchase totaling $150,000. Another $78,000 was invested in patient monitors for theprogressive care unit. “Improving accessibility to safe, high quality health care is an ongoing goal of Saint Mary’s Regional Health System. As our region grows, and as many individuals and families gain access to coverage, Saint Mary’s is well positioned to provide enhanced access to some of the best diagnostic and treatment technologies as well as more physicians in more specialties,” said Mike McCoy, Chief Operating Officer. “We are committed to meeting the growing medical needs of the communities we serve well into the future.”

In 1944, F. C. Peters and W. A. Baldwin opened a new furniture, hardware, and appliance business in downtown Russellville as Peters-Baldwin Company. In the mid-1950’s, Peters bought out Baldwin, and the name changed to F. C. Peters & Sons. When F. C. retired in the early 1970’s, brothers Bill and Flave Peters purchased the firm from their father. Since 1991 they have done business as Peters Family Living. Flave Peters retired in 2001 and Bill now runs the business with the same Customer Focus as his dad taught him and his brother. Knowing that the most important part of Customer Service is the people involved in the process, Bill Peters has surrounded himself with a team of quality, caring individuals in sales, credit, delivery, and service who also believe in the same concept. “We are blessed, Bill stresses, “in having quality associates in every department serving our customers through teamwork! We could not do it without them working together taking care of customers! Peters Family Living continues to intensify its “Customer Focus Process that customers have grown to expect. The First Element of this Customer Focus Process is making the shopping experience a positive one with a friendly, knowledgeable sales staff and a large, well-organized display of quality furniture and appliances. The sales associates are trained to listen to the customer and help the customer make an intelligent buying decision. The Second Element is offering In-House Financing as well as other ways to pay for merchandise. Peters is one of the few retail stores in the state offering In-House Financing which makes it easy to purchase with no credit check. The Third Element of the Customer Focus Process is professional, caring delivery to the customer’s home. The firm constantly receives calls from customers, delighted by the performance of delivery personnel. The Fourth Element in taking care of the Customer takes place after delivery. Peters’ Customers have learned through the decades that this store does take care of problems. Peters invites complaints because that’s the only way they can correct a problem. All four of these ingredients are necessary to achieve their commitment to the Customer Focus Process, but the Peters team is not resting, making constant improvements in serving the “Four Generations of their Family of Customers.

AMCARE “We’re here to help.” Recent changes in our state’s home care programs may be of concern. However, AMCARE Senior Life Partners, Inc.’s (AMCARE) pledge to continue providing professional and compassionate in home personal care and help you transition to any changes which could affect you is stronger than ever. You can depend on AMCARE to be readily available to assist you, or your loved one, with in home personal care. AMCARE will provide a free assessment, with no obligation, to evaluate your present home care plan or anticipated home care. “Elder care has become the top concern in our society today as it replaces child care as the number one issue for the men and women in today’s work force.” “Already people are spending more time caring for, or providing care to their elderly parents, than they did for their own children. The concern is only going to magnify with the aging population.” Research shows that older people who remain at home live longer and happier lives than do people of similar circumstances that leave their homes to live in other environments. AMCARE, owned and operated by Monty and Avona (Keener) Kasselman, continues to provide In Home Care assistance since 2007. AMCARE is licensed by Arkansas Department of Labor, Arkansas Department of Health and is certified by Arkansas
Department of Human Services Division of Aging and Adult Services. The compassionate, knowledgeable and professional office staff includes Misti Chansley, care specialist and office administrator; Kacie McCurrie, care coordinator; Jennifer Krentz, RN BSN; and Pam Turner, RN. The staff maintains a great rapport with clients, family members and personal care aides (PCA) to ensure care, comfort and safety are being provided and regulations, policy and procedures are intact. Monitoring and home visits by AMCARE RN and staff are performed to check for any personal or physical changes of client — which may need to be documented and communicated to doctor, contacts, PCAs and others — as needed, to ensure quality care. AMCARE has a dedicated, compassionate and trained PCA staff as well. The PCA staff is monitored, insured, bonded and covered by worker’s compensation insurance. PCAs provide assistance with activities of daily living, primarily to seniors. However, anyone 18 or above may qualify. PCAs will try to help seniors remain living at home, regardless where they call home, independently, safely and comfortably for as long as possible. This is an affordable solution for older individuals or couples that are capable of managing some of their physical needs, but may require
assistance such as light housekeeping, changing bed linens, meal preparation, medication reminders, monitoring safety of/ or assisting with bathing, companionship and transportation. The loved one can maintain their own routine, attend functions and enjoy shopping, visiting and hobbies at their convenience. Keeping doctor and other appointments is very important during the aging process and an appointment schedule can be included in the “plan of care” so appointments are not missed. AMCARE’s one-on-one care benefits the loved one and gives the family peace of mind. AMCARE will customize a schedule, and plan of care based on the individual’s needs. Daily, evening, overnight, 24/7, weekend and holiday assistance is available. Assistance for loved ones in the hospital, nursing homes, assisted living, apartment or living with family can also be arranged. AMCARE also offers a “Welcome Home Service.” After surgery or a hospital stay, AMCARE can transfer a loved one from the hospital or a clinic to home. Errands, un-packing, laundry, meals and help with the recovery process are benefits of the Welcome Home service. For more information or to schedule an appointment for a free assessment, call 479880-1112. AMCARE is located at 914 West B Street in Russellville.

Foot Health Clinic
In the summer of 1979, Dr. Thomas G. Werner, DPM, moved to Russellville to establish the Foot Health Clinic to provide quality foot and ankle care for the River Valley. As a native of Clarksville, he was very familiar with this area and saw a need for Podiatric Foot Care here. Dr. Werner graduated from Clarksville High school, then attended College of the Ozarks in Clarksville. Dr. Werner then graduated from the Illinois College of Podiatric Medicine in 1978, and went to Shreveport, La. for his internship. After the internship, Dr. Werner moved to Russellville. When he opened his practice, it was located at 304 South Denver Avenue, downtown in the “Croom home.” In 1989, Werner built an
office building at 2503 West Main in Russellville, where his practice is still located today. Dr. Werner has served the River Valley area for 38 years. There are three staff personnel that work alongside him at the Foot Health Clinic. The receptionist and clerical assistant is Erin Grice. Deeneen Mendez has been with the clinic for eight years and is the treatment and surgical assistant. Misty Garcia is the Podiatry assistant. The clinic could not function without these dedicated assistants. Podiatric medicine involves any condition affecting the ankle and foot. From vascular, orthopedic, dermatologic and neurologic conditions, to braces, shoes, casts and more. Some of the things treated daily are heel

pain, ingrown toenails, any toenail condition, plantar warts, calluses, corns, athletes foot and arch problems. The clinic foot also has appliances and shoe inserts for foot deformities. Any foot condition is evaluated and treated in the office or referred for further consultation. Dr. Werner has a brother who is a Podiatrist for Mercy Hospital in Fort Smith. He has two daughters, Kendall and Laura, who attended school, from K-12, in Russellville. Both daughters graduated from Arkansas Tech University. Dr. Werner and his family enjoy the River Valley so much, and think the people of the region are wonderful. He loves practicing here and seeing the people around town and in his office.

The Foot Health Clinic provides medical care of the foot with emphasis on conservative and biomechanical treatment of medical related foot problems. Dr. Thomas G. Werner opened the Foot Health Clinic in 1979. He has practiced here continuously for 36 years. His services also extend to Johnson County as he travels to Johnson Regional Medical Center to see patients twice a month. Dr. Werner performs “at risk care” for diabetic and peripheral vascular disease foot related illnesses. Surgery is recommended and utilized on patients in need, but every effort will be made to treat patients conservatively. If you or anyone you know has these or other foot related conditions, call the Foot Health Clinic to set up an appointment.

Valley Piano
People from all over the Arkansas River Valley come to Russellville to stop at Valley Piano. Having a full-service piano store in the community is a very unique distinction that only the larger metropolitan areas usually offer. For 42 years, Valley Piano has been a father and son business, started by Al Chenowith and now being operated by son Brian. Valley Piano’s main goal is to make everyone a very important customer. Whether it’s a $5 set of guitar strings or a $15,000 grand piano, you deal with store owners the moment you walk in the door. Valley Piano sells new and used pianos. It has a selection of vertical and grand piano styles. Chenowith received his training from the Piano Technicians Guild (PTG), and all pianos are set up and serviced to PTG
standards. Piano Tuning and moving services are offered for hire. A large selection of lesson books and sheet music is kept in stock. There is a myth that shopping small and local means less selection and higher prices. Valley Piano works hard to have competitive pricing and selection and provide advantages over dealers in other cities or online. Valley Piano provides convenience, with a showroom where instruments may be tested before purchase. In addition, Valley Piano provides fast product support and service on instruments they sell. “I’ve even run into customers while out eating or shopping around town and either set up a service appointment or offered product support on the spot,” Brian said. “I think it’s an added value not having to call an 800 number five

or six times and waiting several months to get a problem solved.” Valley Piano also sells digital pianos and keyboards. The selection ranges from inexpensive home models to high end, professional-grade models for performers. Recording equipment and computer interfaces are stocked for the home studio market. The company is proud to offer a selection of guitars and accessories not widely available from mainstream retailers. Guitars, amps, pedals, pickups and strings are jut a few of the items available. Valley Piano does service work also, including string changes, basic guitar setup and pickup installs. Please stop by for a visit to see what Valley Piano can do to meet your musical instrument needs. After hours, you can browse our store online at valleypiano.com
Family owned business for over 50 years Wight Office Machines has been in the business community — under the same family ownership — for over 50 years. Bought in 1965 by Michael Wight, the store was O.B. Williamson and Co. and sold Underwood typewriters. In 2005, Mike Wight opened a branch in Russellville because he enjoyed the city of Russellville and the work ethic of the people in the community. The Russellville store is managed by Darrell Lowder and currently has five employees serving the River Valley, with a combined total of over 68 years of experience. Serving the River Valley for 67 years Why leave town when you can find everything you need right here? Cogswell Motors models the method by which the Arkansas River Valley can keep it in the family.
“I want to be a car salesman when I grow up!” How many of your children made this statement when you asked them what they wanted to be? Probably very few. Auto dealers have gotten a bad reputation over the years and making a career out of assisting customers in purchasing their second largest investment hasn’t been a high ambition. However, making a career doing this very thing has made the employees of Cogswell Motors the exception to the rule. And for the many loyal customers of Cogswell Motors. They wouldn’t consider taking their business anywhere else. In a day when mega auto groups have grown so large that they are now publicly traded, successful family dealerships like Cogswell Motors are becoming less common. Whereas in
the larger corporations, each sale is just a number for the day, the regular customer at Cogswell Motors walks in the door to be personally greeted, many times by name. Such treatment is to be expected when the dealership is third-generation family-owned and the management’s tenure can be measured in decades rather than years. Former sales manager Euel Roberts put in four decades with the company, building his customer base by straightforward, honest dealing and oldfashioned taking care of the customer. This customer service ethic he instilled into his son, Richard Roberts, and also Ed Schwartz, the current sales managers. The legacy of customer service doesn’t end there. Service manager Donny Barefield, after putting in four decades of service before retirement,

manager Lynn Collins, who has been with Cogswell Motors since he was
a teenager. Led by the senior management listed above, the rest of the staff — many who are building significant tenures of their own — follow suit. The average salesperson has been with Cogswell Motors for 14 years, building his or her career around loyal, repeat customers. They know that a “quick sale” isn’t the goal, as might be in other places. Long-term relationships forged through long-term customer service are the ultimate goals. This is why many customers simply won’t consider going out of town for their transportation needs. Cogswell Motors specializes with new car sales for Ford, Lincoln and Mazda as well as used car sales. For your maintenance needs, they have Cogswell Collision Center, Quick Lane Fast Lube and a full Service Department.

University of Arkansas Community College at Morrilton Providing local area with skilled workforce
The University of Arkansas Community College at Morrilton (UACCM) prides itself on offering the area’s citizens with relevant, quality education and training needed to provide a local skilled workforce. As a two-year community college, the institution is able to respond to the changing needs of business and industry by adding new, in-demand training programs in a quick and efficient manner. From an initial enrollment of 278 students and 13 programs in 1963, to the current almost 2,200 credit students exploring a wide variety of academic and training options, UACCM contributes significantly to the area’s job creation and economic development. Students may choose to complete a shortterm training program and quickly enter the workforce armed with solid career and technical skills, or build a strong academic foundation by earning the first two years of their bachelor’s degree in a small, comfortable campus setting. The college’s technical/ career programs include air conditioning, heating and refrigeration, automotive collision re-
pair, automotive service technology, business, computer information systems, drafting, early childhood development, emergency medical technician, industrial mechanics and maintenance, petroleum technology, practical nursing, registered nursing, surveying and welding. Students may pursue an Associate of Arts degree for transfer to a four-year university in the areas of business, general education, general studies, liberal arts and teaching (preschool and middle school tracks). UACCM is one of 18 independent campuses and entities in the University of Arkansas System, and this affiliation has allowed UACCM to form innovative partnerships with other UA System institutions, including the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville, University of Arkansas at Fort Smith, University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences, and the University of Arkansas Criminal Justice Institute. These partnerships further expand access and options available to students within the immediate service area. UACCM will host its annual free information session, “#moreinmor-
rilton,” — an open house event to showcase its programs from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday, March 12. The college invites the community to come to the campus to see the classrooms and labs, meet instructors, learn about financial aid options and hear about the support services offered. A free lunch will be served following the event. Individuals can RSVP at uaccm.edu or call 501-977-2053. Tours are also available each week and may be arranged for individuals or groups. UACCM’s fundraising campaign, Give Meaning, will help fund construction of a new Workforce Training Center. The new facility will house the departments of air conditioning and refrigeration, automotive technology, industrial maintenance and mechanics, and welding. A groundbreaking is scheduled this spring and the anticipated completion date is the fall of 2017. More information can be found at the college’s Web site, www.uaccm. edu, or by calling the UACCM Admissions Office at 501-977-2000 or 1-800-264-1094.

Funeral Homes and On-Site Cremation Services
Over A Century of Caring Personalized Caskets Each individual has a unique character that should be reflected in their funeral service. We understand and value this concept, which is why we offer a variety of service options as unique as the individuals that we serve.
A Reputation for Excellent Service and Affordability • No Hidden Charges • All Existing Life, Burial and Pre-Paid • Policies Accepted • In-Home Arrangements • Family’s Needs First • Proven Excellence Cornwell Funeral Home, and on-site cremation service with locations in Danville and Dardanelle, is a family-owned business established over four generations ago. President Rush Cornwell expressed that since its establishment in 1898, “Cornwell Funeral Home has strived to ensure that we provide personalized and compassionate services to the families who have entrusted the care of their loved one to us.” He further adds that at no additional cost, Cornwell Funeral Home accepts all pre-arrangement contracts and insurance policies that a family has with other funeral service providers. According to the Cornwell family, honesty and a true concern for those we serve have been the building blocks and hallmark of our reputation. The professional staff at Cornwell Funeral Home is committed to providing dignified, respectful and personalized assistance to every family. Recognizing that each family is unique, it is important to Cornwell’s staff to work with each family to create a meaningful service that honors the life and memory of their loved one. Mike Cornwell always believed that such personal service is part of the reason Cornwell Funeral Home is the second oldest existing business in Yell County, the fifth oldest funeral home in the state of Arkansas and why more families put their trust in Cornwell Funeral Home more than any other, year after year. And the only funeral home with an on-site crematory and personalized caskets, Cornwell Funeral Home is moving into the 21st century. Come visit with us and see the difference why more families are choosing Cornwell Funeral Home over all the others in the River Valley. You will see the difference between a funeral home and a funeral business.

On-Site Cremation
ll funeral homes advertise cremation services, but most people are shocked to learn that the cremation process is usually subcontracted out to third-party industrial crematories. However, all cremations at Cornwell Funeral Home are performed at their own Dardanelle facility by one of their four certified crematory operators. Having an on-site crematory puts Cornwell Funeral Home in a class of its own. As expressed by Rush Cornwell, this is just another way in which we guarantee that your loved one’s care is always within reach and our number one priority.

St. John Catholic School High quality academic education in an environment of spiritual strength
For more than six decades, St. John Catholic School has provided excellence in academic education infused with Catholic, Christian values. Founded in 1947 by Father Rudolph Maus, St. John Catholic School moved to its present location in 1956 to replace St. Augustine School in Dardanelle, which had grown too large for its facility. St. John Catholic School in Russellville operates under the belief every child is entitled to a high quality academic education in an environment of spiritual strength, making St. John Catholic School truly a place where faith and knowledge meet. In 1956 the school
needed for active and constructive participation in society. To begin the 2015-16 school year, 104 students were enrolled in pre-kindergarten through fifth grade. The diverse student body is comprised of 60% Catholic students and 40% non-Catholic students, and all faiths are welcome at St. John Catholic School. The school’s mission is to provide all students a high quality education rooted in the life of Christ and to foster the pursuit of academic excellence and development of the whole person for each student. St. John Catholic School presently has seven home room classes,
The school’s mission is to provide all students a high quality education rooted in the life of Christ and to foster the pursuit of academic excellence and development of the whole person for each student. began with two classrooms but doubled its classroom total in 1959 to accommodate its growing enrollment. In 1995, the school was accredited by the Arkansas Non-Public School Accrediting Association, and two new classrooms were added to the school. The church and school administrative offices were renovated in 2000. As recently as 2014, to accommodate its fifth straight year of increased enrollment, a new classroom was
added, and 4th and 5th grades were separated to ensure no combined grades or classrooms at the school. Since its beginning, St. John Catholic School has operated to meet the varying demands of religious parochial education. It serves students from pre-kindergarten through fifth grade from Russellville and neighboring communities in the Arkansas River Valley under the pastoral lead-
ership and administration of Father Jack Sidler. Vernell Bowen is the superintendent of the Diocesan School System, and Mark Tyler is the principal at St. John Catholic School. Catholic doctrine is taught, and students have added opportunities to prepare for, participate in and worship at Mass twice per week and on special days as part of their spiritual growth. Christian values are also interwoven in the teaching of academic skills
including its Montessori Pre-K Program. Music, physical education, Spanish and art are offered in addition to St. John’s core academic curriculum. In addition, an extended school program is available which includes before and after school care. The program is provided for students Monday through Friday while school is in session and runs from 7:00 a.m. to 7:45 a.m. and 3:15 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. Please feel free to visit our school located at 1912 West Main here in Russellville or call the school office at 967-4644 for further information. Public registration begins February 16, 2015 for the 2016-17 school year.

Delta Pest Control, Inc.
Thanks to you … I’m where I am today. I’m proud to be recognized as a member of State Farm’s Legion of Honor. Thank you for the opportunity to serve as your agent. Like a good neighbor, State Farm is there.®
Delta Pest Control, Inc. originated in McGehee, Arkansas in 1976 and was purchased by Bill and Doris Lawrence in 1984. Since that time, Delta has grown to be one of the largest family-owned pest control businesses in Arkansas. We currently employ 20 people in the immediate Russellville area, as well as 20 other employees all around the state. All of Delta’s employees receive annual training that keeps Delta on the leading edge of technology and application methods. Delta provides monthly, quarterly, and one-time pest control for residential and commercial accounts. We treat all common household pests as well as bats and bed bugs. We have recently hired an employee who has a
Bachelor’s degree in Fisheries and Wildlife Management, so we will be on the leading edge in the control of unwanted wildlife. We offer wonderful systems that control flying insects (flies, mosquitoes, etc.) around the exterior of your home. Delta can also take care of all your termite needs. Bedbugs have exploded across the state and Delta has done over 1,500 jobs this past year. Fire ants have also been a big problem during these warmer months. In addition to taking care of all your termite and pest control needs, Delta also has a Remodeling and Repairs division that has doubled in the past year. Delta is a licensed contractor in Arkansas and will be happy to provide you with a free
estimate on your repairs/ remodeling project. Delta’s motto is “treat your customer like you want to be treated.” We offer quality service and experience at reasonable prices. Evidently this philosophy has worked because we have been voted the “Best of the Best Pest Control Companies in the River Valley” for the past several years. We are extremely appreciative of all our customers and employees. For more information about Delta, please call the office at 479-890-6960 or visit the website at deltapestcontrol.net where you can browse through an insect/ rodent library that helps with the identification of local pests. Customers can now pay their bills online and can also make requests for information.

Lemley Funeral Service Celebrates 100 Years It’s difficult to imagine the number of businesses that have come and gone in Pope County during the course of the past hundred years or so. Since 1916, Lemley Funeral Service in Atkins has been dedicated to providing area families with the highest standard of service at the most affordable price. Perhaps that’s why, after a hundred years, it is still here today. In 1903, W.M. Lemley and sons partnered in a general mercantile business that branched out in several directions. One son, O.R. Lemley, developed the funeral and furniture businesses with his father. Over a century ago families would come to town and buy a locally crafted wooden coffin from W.M. Lemley and Sons, then would return to their family cemetery to bury their own. Families soon wanted full service and Lemley Funeral Service began. Around 1920, O.R. Lemley purchased a new Ford Hearse that was the first motor driven coach in Pope County. Records show that they rented this to other nearby firms for several years as they had no such conveyance. Often acting as a combination hearse and ambulance, it provided the first ambulance service in the area. The Lemley’s even have old pen and ink death records dating from December 1915.

Skipping forward a few years, the Lemley’s credit part of their success to long-time employee, Carl Rackley. Hired away from Mulligan’s DX in 1962, Carl went to work for O.R. and son Jack Lemley’s furniture and funeral businesses, two adjoining storefronts in the old Atkins downtown. Carl sold and delivered furniture, but had to be ready to go on death calls and work funerals. With Jack’s health in decline, Carl played a vital role in keeping both sides of
the business afloat. In 1978, he and his wife, Pearl, purchased the furniture portion of Lemley’s. After 38 years, Carl continues to serve as a funeral director as well as own and operate Rackley Furniture. Rackley, along with Jim & son, Chris Lemley (representing the 4th & 5th generation) and Riley Christian serve as directors. Office manager Lorneva Pinion has been with the funeral home for 16 years. Combined they represent over 100 years of experience in the funeral business.
“When people serve together for decades, That shows they are proud of what they are doing for the community... that they take pride in their work.” Chris Lemley From a downtown store building in 1916, to their familyfriendly home completed in 1998, Lemley Funeral Service has had the honor and privilege of serving our neighbors in their times of need for more than five generations. If you haven’t met them already, they invite you to call or come by and compare. Lemley Funeral Service is located on North Church Street (Hwy 105) in Atkins. Call 641-2589 or visit www.lemleyfuneral.com for more information.
