elcome to the holiday season! The 11th year of the new millennium is nearly behind us — can you believe it? — but before we say goodbye to 2011 I invite you to take the opportunity to enjoy this “most wonderful time of the year.” Since our last edition of RVL Magazine, the Arkansas River Valley has said goodbye for now to one of its own, former RVL editor Mary Kincy. She is now living and working in the Austin, Texas, area, but may pop in from time to time within these pages or that of our sister publication, The Courier, to say hello. Meanwhile, my role behind the scenes — and behind the lines — at RVL Magazine will take on a more public profile. It’s a challenge I’m excited to meet. Despite my changing role, we at RVL Magazine are committed to our continuing mission to tout the people and places of our communities in the Arkansas River Valley. In this issue, our annual Holiday Gift Guide, we highlight a range of options for shopping local this season, from patronizing area artists to stopping in at one of our many locally-owned small businesses. Studies show that dollars spent shopping locally have three times the impact on a community as dollars spent at national chains, so as community partners it is an act for which we advocate — and we want to put our money where our mouth is. That’s why we’re once again sponsoring our annual $250 shopping spree, offering Arkansas

ORNAMENT FEATURES BURRIS MEMORIAL PLAZA
F
or Christmas, Arkansas River Valley residents can hang a piece of history on their tree. Since 1994, Main Street Russellville has featured many of the community’s historic buildings on limited-edition collectable Christmas ornaments. The project began as a way to raise awareness of Russellville’s many historic structures, landmarks and sacred places and emphasize their value to the community. This year’s ornament features Burris Memorial Plaza, located at the intersection of Main Street and Arkansas Avenue. “This year was the 10th anniversary of the dedication of the plaza, and the committee felt that it was the perfect landmark to feature on this year’s ornament,” Betsy
McGuire, Main Street Russellville’s executive director, said. While a few of the early ornaments have sold out and are out of circulation, many of the early issues are still available. Below is a list of the entire ornament collection to date. All editions are still available to purchase, unless otherwise noted. • Pope County Courthouse, 1994. • Historic J.L. isitors to local convenience stores have likely noticed the distinctive displays bearing bags upon bags of Iron Works Kettle Corn Co. popcorn — but they probably haven’t heard how the company’s president, Larry Roberts, developed the idea for the product as a way to stop “throwing away” his family time. Rewind: Roberts was sitting on an airplane. He worked as a process engineering consultant. He spent about 300 nights a year in hotels, all the while missing his wife Tracy, an art teacher at Russellville Middle School, and his two children, MacKenzie, a high school sophomore and Drew, a sophomore at the University of Arkansas. “For me, I was living on the road and I was missing my children,” Roberts said. “So I was out on the road trying to come up with a job that would bring me home and there just wasn’t anything that was comparable to my salary.” Near the start of the flight, Roberts grabbed an airsickness bag and started scribbling down ideas to answer this question: What can I do that would let me work at home? He thought back a quarter-century, to the day he visited Silver Dollar City in Branson

and tasted kettle corn for the first time — an idea that had been in his head for a while. Nearly a decade before, Roberts and a friend had constructed a kettle corn cooker and had dabbled in selling the corn at area events such as Fall Fest. They initially
thought of peddling the kettle corn at larger events like the War Eagle Craft Fair near Hindsville, but didn’t anticipate how difficult it would be to get permission to sell at such events. See SUCCESS on page 29

AREA WOMEN TURN CRAFTING HOBBY INTO A BUSINESS MODEL
and-crafted gifts can be hard to come by in an age when machines mass-manufacture most products. Cue Brandi Akin of Pottsville and Breanne Davis of Russellville. The two engineers of the business formerly known as “Something Borrowed” now known as “Brandi and Bre” aim to provide handmade, thoughtful pieces to residents of the Arkansas River Valley. The business grew from a hobby. “People would come to our houses and say ‘Where did you get this?’ and we would be like, ‘Oh we made it,’” Davis said. “We sort of decided, ‘Why don’t we sell this stuff ?’” The crafty duo offers multiple items for the home including ornaments, door hangers, picture frames, cabinets and framed windows with phrases etched upon them. Materials more often than not come from old barns, which the women scout on a regular basis. “We call it treasure hunting,” Davis said.
Akin said the business’ home furnishings make good Christmas gifts due to the originality and singularity of them. “It’s one-of-a-kind,” Akins said. “We try to make everything different and it’s not something you can buy in a store.” Prices for the women’s crafts range from $8 for ornaments to $100, with custom-built cabinets, depending on the size, costing upwards of a few hundred dollars. Orders can be customized to the customer’s wishes. Davis said a unique handmade item can add a special touch to one’s home. “Everyone is looking for that great conversation piece of art for their home, and we feel like our stuff can be that great conversation piece,” she said. “We have pieces from windows to frames. “Basically, in order to pop corn at those places, the people who are doing it have to die or something,” Roberts said. “They’re in it forever. So the equipment just sat in storage. We’d pull it out once or twice a year at Fall Fest and a couple of other places and pop corn. It was interesting when we did it; people just loved it. From the start people were saying, ‘This is the best we’ve ever tasted.’ The first few times they would say something like that I’d think, ‘OK, they’re just saying that.’ Then everybody started just raving.” On the plane, he kept coming back to the idea. “I knew I couldn’t get in fairs, so I was thinking, ‘How can I make that work for me?’” Roberts said. “I decided the only way to do that was to let someone else sell it for me. That brought up a lot of issues. You have to get FDA approval. You have to be in an inspected facility. You can’t just do this in your garage or set it up on the corner. There’s health safety, food safety. There’s a litany of things you have to do to sell a product. At first I thought, ‘That’s too much.’ A few months went by and I finally started asking questions. ‘What would it take?’” With a little research, Roberts discovered the regulations for popcorn manufacturing were not as stringent as he first believed. “Since it’s popcorn, you’d have to really, really try to hurt someone with it. The approval process all the way through has been much quicker and easier than I anticipated,” Roberts said. Last July, Roberts approached Nancy Drewry, who at the time was operating a farmer’s market in town, about selling the popcorn at her store. “They said, ‘Sure, but it’s the wrong time of the year for that,’” Roberts said. “’People want that in the fall.’ I said, ‘Let’s give it a shot.’ So we filled up their display with popcorn and it immediately started selling. It was the middle of the summer and it really started building a local following. People would be really aggravated if they came in to the shop and they didn’t have the product on the shelf.” From that moment, the business began expanding. Soon Iron Works Kettle Corn was available at other locations, including PDQ convenience stores. Upon request, Roberts presented his product to Harris Baking Company of Northwest Arkansas, which now distributes the product to 300 privately owned grocery stores across seven states. Another national chain with about 300 locations recently agreed to sell the product. uring the holidays, gifts and glad tidings aren’t the only highlights of the season. Holiday parties tend to turn up by the handful, with everything from friendly, family and corporate gatherings in full swing. But trying to plan a successful holiday party can seem overwhelming. Local event planner Lesleigh Smith of Dardanelle, who recently journeyed back from Texas — from which she traveled the globe planning extravagant affairs — said one of the secrets to a successful holiday party is organization. “Organization is key, (as is) not stressing out,” Smith said. “I think what most people do is stress out too much. Know what your strengths are and know what your weaknesses are. If you are unsure, hire out or ask for help. You don’t want it to come party time and you still aren’t ready. Set aside time for yourself to get ready. That’s a huge part.” The Lux Events owner said the next step is to send out invites. “I’m a firm believer in people mailing invitations, not e-vites,” she said. “Make it personal. People want to feel like it is a party, but it doesn’t have to be over the top.” When planning the party, keep in mind special touches to set the tone. Smith said music to fit the mood is key (she set the tone for the interview with Justin Beiber’s new holiday album) as well as items like candles, which are more budget-friendly than flowers. Another touch to make your party a hit is to plan a theme. “One of my little quirks is to have a mascot,” Smith said, gesturing to a table setting. “This setting has a deer theme. I’ve done stuff in the past with a squirrel and had acorn salt and pepper shakers. It’s something that kind of sets the party apart to have something fun without being cheesy. All of the stuff on the table, I walked out and got out of my back yard.” When it comes to good eats, Smith said simple is best. “Keep it simple unless you are a cook,.” she said. “Finger foods are best. Otherwise, you, the hostess, will be up and down all night long. Another suggestion provided by Smith, is to have a signature drink to spice up the regular water-and-soda routine. “A lot of people don’t think to do it, but when at a party, people tend to go to their usual ‘Oh I’ll have a Coke.’ Give it a fun name and call it your signature drink. Like here, we have buckshot cider. It keeps with the theme and is simple with apple cider and a splash of cranberry. It makes people step out of their comfort zone and gives them something when they walk in to feel welcome.” Smith said when dining, it’s best to break out the good dishes. “It makes people feel warm and fuzzy when they are eating and dining on something firm, not paper cups and plates,” she explained. Finally, it’s not a party without the company you keep. “Honestly, what makes a good party are the friends and ambiance you erected,” Smith said. “Just getting your friends there is what makes the party good.”

• Do keep it simple or hire out. Know your limitations and make sure you are ready to delve into decorating and cooking for your party. When in doubt, hire out. • Do break out the good stuff. Don’t be afraid to use the fine china and crystal. It can make a casual event a bit more polished and makes your guests feel special too. • Do send formal invitations. Handwritten notes are the most special, but a printed invitation is great too. Just skip the e-vite, please. • Do create ambiance. Candles create the perfect lighting and everyone looks good in candlelight. Remember that atmosphere is half the battle. • Do create a playlist. Have a playlist appropriate to your party styling on your iPod ready to go as soon as the first guest walks in the door. Tuning to a channel on your TV that plays only music will work in a pinch. • Do have a timeline. When prepping for an event, the details can sometimes take longer than expected. Create a timeline that begins the morning of your party and stick to it.

Having a signature cocktail or “mocktail” allows guest to break away from their normal libation and try something festive and fitting to your party. • Do give out favors. Tell your guests thank you with a small take away from your party, even if it’s something like a take-home bag of cookies with a thank-you tag. • Do allow time for you. There’s nothing worse than greeting your guests at the door while still trying to light candles and get dressed. Allow yourself time to get ready and loosen up, because when you feel good and are enjoying the party, everyone else has a great time too! • Do appeal to the senses. Sight (a great ambiance). Sound (your great playlist). Touch (Real dinnerware. No plastic and paper). Smell and taste (The food will take care of this). • Don’t make it formal. No one likes a stuffy party, so make sure guests are comfortable. • Don’t stipulate a dress code. Allow guests to come as they choose. Most people enjoy dressing up for a party, but for those who don’t, make them feel welcome too.
• Don’t hesitate to hire help. If you are serving more than one course or desire elaborate decor, hire professionals. Otherwise you’ll be decorating and/or in the kitchen and to stressed to enjoy your party. • Don’t designate the party to one room. Allow your guests to mingle throughout the dining room, living room, kitchen and outdoors,. Keeping the lighting consistent in those areas will make guests feel welcome to roam. • Don’t skip the coat check. It’s cold out and people will have extra layers. Allow one room in your home as the coat/purse room or have a garment rack tucked away. • Don’t forget the loo. A well-stocked powder room should never be underestimated. It’s a comforting gift to your guests. Every detail will be noticed. • Don’t hide the bevs. Place the bar or beverages where guests can serve themselves and keep extra bags of ice in your freezer, just in case. • Don’t take yourself too seriously. ne of the most time-consuming aspects of the holiday season is food preparation. Old Post Barbecue provides a solution, saving customers the hours normally spent cooking a turkey. For about 25 years, the restaurant has smoked turkeys — and assorted other meats, including ham, brisket and pork loin — year-’round, but with specials during the holidays. “We’ll be covered up. We do about 300 for Thanksgiving and 300 for Christmas — sometimes more,” Steve Dodd or, as he’s known to customers and employees, “Barbecue Steve,” said. We set deadlines for the holidays, but it never fails — I set the deadline and people come in after. ... It depends on the size of bird. Some can go for four hours. Some go for nine hours. We have people that bring us 23- and 24-pound turkeys that do not smoke well. W
hich of your family’s holiday decorations means the most to you? Is it a family heirloom passed down through generations? Something you purchased for yourself ? A gift someone gave to you, or maybe an ornament with your child’s picture gracing the front? All of the above can be created in one local shop — Pottery Worx. Pottery Worx is a paint-your-own pottery studio open to the public. It is also a model retail project designed to allow mentally-challenged Friendship Community Care consumers the opportunity to gain life and business skills. Retail coordinator of the Russellville store Stephanie Morgan said anywhere from three to six Friendship Community Care consumers man the phones and greet customers daily. “They will work on their goals every day, writing checks, counting change and just being integrated into the community,” Morgan said. “We are a nonprofit and all the stuff we sell here goes back into Friendship. Purchasing items and creating your own work is a win-win here. It goes back into the community, helps others learn life skills and you’ve got an original piece of art all at the same time.”
At Pottery Worx there are more than 200 pieces to chose from. Items include large bowls, plates, mugs, soup bowls, flower pots, gnomes, tiles, banks, ladle holders and lights-witch covers, just to name a few. For the upcoming holidays there are Christmas ornaments, Santa figurines, Christmas bowls and more. “A lot of people tend to buy the big plates, tiles and, during the birthday parties, it seems a lot of people go for the figurines,” Morgan said. “Right now everyone is coming in to make gifts and it is beginning to really get busy.” Morgan said the pottery is pre-made and the store provides all the supplies required to decorate — paints and brushes. After a customer finishes a piece, it normally takes about a week to fire. During the holiday season it can take up to two weeks. Morgan stresses Dec. 8 is the deadline to guarantee a piece ready before Christmas. “We get very backed up around the holidays,” Morgan said. “You are allowed to paint after the deadline, it just isn’t guaranteed to be ready.” There are people in the store to help with choosing paint colors, and no appointments are needed. “It’s one of those situations where we can sell every single kernel of corn we can pop right now. It’s really been a Cinderella story. That’s all happened in 13 months,” Roberts said. “I quit driving the growth two or three months ago, but the momentum has just continued to propel it.” The product is also sold at the exit store at Silver Dollar City, a development with which Roberts is particularly pleased. “That’s taken us full circle. For us to be able to sell our
products at Silver Dollar City is just awesome,” Roberts said. The recent success has prompted a move to a new manufacturing location on East 14th Street with more expansion likely in the near future. “We’re still using the original cooker,” Roberts said. “We’re going to build probably three more of them very quickly to keep up with the volume that we’re shipping.” He said the commitment to quality would remain. “We do one batch at a time,” Roberts
explained. “It’s all by hand. We’re still doing the original goodness and if we expand, we’re going to continue to do it that way.” Currently, the company offers 13 different flavors, with new options on the way. “The most popular flavor is our traditional Black Label, which is just the traditional sweet and salty popcorn,” Roberts said. “The second most popular is our own special flavor called Red Label, which starts with kettle corn, then we
add a savory seasoning to it and some cayenne pepper. So you get sweet, salty savory and a little hot. We also do White Cheddar, Nacho Cheese and for those not faint at heart, we have a flavor called Barn Burner. It’s actually hot and spicy popcorn very similar to a Flaming Hot Cheeto and some of the other hot snacks you find. The thing that makes it hot is the same component that is in pepper spray — oleoresin spices. Once we make it hot we shake on some nacho cheese flavoring over that so it’s savory and hot. It’s very similar to a Flaming Hot Cheeto, but it’s our own special recipe. You’re not going to find it anywhere else.” Roberts said the flavors come from experimentation and input from friends and family. “They’d say, ‘Hey have you tried this,’ ‘Have you tried that,’ or ‘You know, we’d really like something spicy.’ So the Red Label was born,” Roberts said. “And then the more people you come in contact with, the more you hear about their favorite flavors are. Just to be unique we added the Barn Burner. There are tons of other flavors, which I don’t even want to talk about right now because we’re so busy. But as we expand and get through our growing pains, we’ll break some of those out.” A rarity in the kettle corn business is Iron Works’ Sugar Free Sweet and Salty variety.

“You can’t find it,” Robert said. “We’re the only people who offer a sugar-free kettle corn. It’s sweetened with an artificial sweetner called sucralose, which is made to resemble and act like regular sugar. It’s basically a one-forone substitute. If you put a teaspoon in of sugar, you’d use a teaspoon of sucralose. It’s fluffy and withstands heat.” As Roberts discovered last year, the kettle corn is a popular gift idea. “Last year, the farmer’s market put our product in well over 500 gift baskets. We’re going to offer gift baskets. We can do traditional gift baskets where you can pick the popcorn you like, but we can also put extra things in there like fudge or coffee or things like that to kind of round it out.” Along with the baskets, Iron Works offers gift boxes. “We take a box and fill it up with four big bags of popcorn,” he said. “Typically it’s a couple of bags of Black Label and a couple of bags of Red Label and then a caramel corn and a chocolate-covered caramel corn. What’s neat about this is it comes in a box that’s ready to ship. We can actually ship it for them. It’s a nondescript box, but when the person who gets it opens it up, it’s wrapped on the inside. So this is a great shipping thing.

We’ve got a big five-ounce size and now we have a grab-bag size — it’s an ounce and a half. It’s small and it’s perfect for gift baskets because you can put 10 or 20 of those in there in a variety of flavors. About a year removed from his brainstorming session on the plane, Roberts said he is spending more time with his family — just not the way they probably envisioned it. “I’m in the same town I live in,” Roberts said. “I guess the one thing I did succeed in is I’m spending more time with my family, but I don’t know that my family really appreciates it because they’re down here working with me. They’re bagging corn. “I couldn’t do this without my family and friends.”

advice Though this list of items is organized in no particular order, there’s hardly a more sought-after technical device than a couple of items from a little upstart business named Apple. Help your man mourn the loss of the late, great Steve Jobs by purchasing him an iPhone 4S or an iPad 2. The new iPhone features “retina display,” and it runs on a 3.5-inch, 960- by 640-pixel screen. The iPhone’s retina display features 326 pixels per inch (four times as many as the iPhone 3GS). It also features two cameras — one front-facing camera and another on the back of the device. While the only plausible use for a front-facing camera is Apple’s iPhone 4S to help take better Facebook profile pictures, the only thing better than one camera on a phone has to be two cameras on a phone. The iPhone 4S will also record HD video and features tapcontrolled video focus, built-in video editing and one-click sharing. While recording video, the LED flash will stay on to illuminate scenes. Possibly the most exciting feature is video calling through an app called FaceTime. FaceTime runs exclusively on WiFi, and only between iPhone 4 devices, but it brings us one step closer to “The Jetsons” technology. The iPad 2 also features two cameras for video calling and HD video. The Apple website promises the dual core a5 chip means the new iPad “can do twice the work at once.” The site also boasts the product has up to nine times the graphic performance of its predecessor. A little more than a month ago, at a Walmart not far away, the Star Wars saga became available on Blu Ray. The movies are available either as one six-movie package or — as
I’d recommend — the films are boxed in their proper trilogys — the prequels and the far-superior originals. The discs also contain bonus material such as deleted scenes and other extras, not to mention another round of tweaking to the originals from ultra-perfectionist George Lucas. Any movie fan would be well pleased to receive the films in their new high-definition format. He doesn’t have a Blu Ray player or HD TV? Looks like you can add to the list. Every year, shoppers are attracted to the goofy gadget table at their local department store. Most of the time, this table features junk that will likely break within an hour or two, but if you find yourself drawn to the gadget table, seek out the Totes Air Guitar. U.S. Cafe used to do it, but now they’re out of business.” For those who want to skip the step of picking out their own turkey, Coffman said the restaurant also sells smoked turkeys. “We buy them, smoke them and sell them. It’s a lot easier on everybody,” Coffman said.
Coffman said the bargain the customer found on a pre-purchased turkey determines which option is a better bargain. “It depends on how good a deal the person gets on the turkey,” Coffman said. “If they find one for 30 or 40 cents per pound, they’re getting a better deal just having us smoke it instead of just paying us for it. Ours are 12- to 14-pound average. You can’t beat a $27 turkey where all you have to do is heat it up.”

When our final pair of jeans is ripped beyond the point it can be worn legally in public, then we’ll go buy our own clothes, but we do not want clothes picked out by our wives, girlfriends or mothers at Christmas — unless they come in the form of a cool hat. You can personalize your ornaments or Christmas gifts how you want them. Write what you want and detail it how you want.
