Natural ways to beat seasonal allergies The arrival of warmer weather changes the landscape completely. Animals come out of hiding and hibernation while trees and flowers bloom anew.

The spring season can be an exciting time for naturalists and lovers of the great outdoors because they can immerse themselves in the sights, sounds and smells of nature. But for many people, spring also marks the start of allergy season and spending time outdoors can become downright uncomfortable for them. The American College of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology says nasal allergies affect approximately 50 million people in the United States.

Allergic diseases, including asthma, are the fifth most prevalent chronic diseases among people of all ages and the third most common in children. Allergic rhinitis, or hay fever, can occur in spring, summer and/or early fall. People who experience hay fever often can attribute their symptoms to sensitivity to pollens from trees, grasses, weeds, or airborne

mold spores. No two allergy sufferers are alike, so medications that may work for one person may be only mildly effective for another. Many medications can cause side effects, which may be just as frustrating as the initial allergy symptoms. Treatments may target sneezing and itching but fail to clear up congestion. Drowsiness, dry mouth and nasal irritation may be side effects of common allergy drugs.

People who want to avoid allergy medication can look to natural remedies to alleviate their symptoms. Whether used alone or in concert with traditional medicine, these remedies may make spending time outdoors more pleasant. n Try probiotics. Probiotics, those friendly bacteria that reside in the digestive system, can do more than just treat an upset stomach. Naturopathic doctors say that probiotics also can influence the immune system and may help strengthen its response to common allergens. Since probiotics are good for

replenishing healthy bacteria in the body anyway, many people may want to keep taking them once their allergy symptoms have come and gone. n Use neti pots or saline sprays.

A small amount of saltwater can rinse away allergens, such as pollen, that get lodged in the nose. These rinses also can help clear up congestion and flush out any other irritants. n Load up on omega-3s. A German study published in the journal Allergy found that participants who ate foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids were less likely to suffer allergy symptoms than those who didn’t regularly eat these foods. Omega-3s can help fight inflammation. Drinking more fluids and using spices in cooking can help flush out allergens as well. n Don’t forget vitamin C. Vitamin C is an immune-system booster and may help prevent the formation of histamine in the body, a substance responsible for many allergy symptoms. •

Recognizing household hazards

Home may be where the heart is, but it also can be an unsafe place if safety hazards are not recognized and addressed.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission says that each year 33.1 million people are injured by consumer products and other dangers in the home. Here is a collection of home hazards that can compromise safety in and around the house. n Flooding: Super storms have been wreaking havoc on many areas of the country. Flooding is a common side effect of strong rains and high tides, and the aftermath of a flood can turn a home from a haven into a hazard. Microorganisms in flood waters may contaminate drinking water, and wet walls and floors can present a breeding ground for insects, pests and microorganisms like mold and mildew.

The National Safety Council says microorganisms can penetrate into soaked, porous materials and later be released into the air and inhaled. Flooding also may lead to weakened or rotted floorboards. n Magnets: Very small magnets are popular in jewelry, toys, building sets, and more. The number of products with strong magnets has increased, which may pose significant safety threats to children. The CPSC says that magnets have contributed to one death and 86 injuries since 2005.

Eight million magnetic toys have been recalled. Magnets that are swallowed may not pass easily through the digestive system.

Oftentimes, they can get trapped in place when attracted to one another or a piece of metal and pinch or twist the intestines, potentially causing blockage or infection. n Furniture tip-over: Large furniture and electronics that are not balanced well or anchored to a wall can be pulled over by children and even adults.

Small children can be seriously injured by tip-over accidents.

Tip-overs cause an estimated 22 deaths per year. n Pools and spas: While drowning in pools and spas is a leading cause of death, there are other dangers lurking.

Faulty underwater lighting, appliances that fall into the water and aging wiring can result in electrocution. The CPSC notes

that suction from a pool or spa drain is also potentially hazardous. The majority of suction accidents involved children but can hold an adult underwater. There have even been cases of people being disemboweled from pool drains. Installing a safety vacuum release system that turns off the pool pump when a drain is blocked can prevent entrapment. n Fire: Home fire injuries are highest among seniors and children under the age of 5. In addition, some fires are a leading cause of emergency room visits. Smoke alarms on every level of the house can alert of danger, but ensuring candles are extinguished and electrical wiring is up to date and making sure space heaters and other appliances are not eft unattended can help prevent fires. n Garage doors: The CPSC says an average of 20,000 people each year are treated in the hospital for injuries caused by garage doors. From fingers and toes getting trapped to heaving doors falling on children and adults, garage doors can cause serious injury. n Falls: Falls are a leading cause of injury to people of all ages. Falls down stairs, from windows and off of ladders are just some of the reasons people visit emergency rooms each and every day. Ensuring there are no tripping hazards around the house and also having sturdy handles and guardrails present for use by the elderly can help prevent some falls. There are many dangers lurking around the house, and awareness of such hazards can help prevent serious injury. •

Protein an ally to women looking to get healthy While protein is used to build and repair muscle tissue and promote neurological function, it also can encourage fat loss, deliver essential nutrients and improve metabolic activity. One of the first safety steps parents can take is to become informed about common childhood injuries and statistics. Educating oneself about the potential for injury is the key to preventing accidents from occurring. The next step is to take measures to childproof areas in and around the home. Various organizations, including Kids Health, the Consumer Product Safety Commission and the National Safety Council, recommend caregivers take the following safety measures. n Use safety latches and locks for cabinets and drawers to keep children away from potentially harmful poisons and household items. n Employ safety gates to prevent falls down stairs and to keep children from entering rooms that are not supervised or contain possible dangers. n Keep track of baby’s milestones, including when infants learn to pull themselves up in the crib. The crib mattress should be set to the lowest position and items removed so curious kids cannot climb out of the crib. n Bathtubs are a common location for injury. Never leave a child unattended in a bath — even for a minute. Bathrooms can be made safer by installing a soft cover on the bath faucet head, using a secure and non-skid bath seat for the child and relying on a thermometer to check the temperature of the bath water.
