Tourism in the River Valley Russellville’s Advertising and Promotion (A&P) Commission helped facilitate more than $400,000 in 2015 through the city’s 3 percent hotel and motel sales tax. The funds generated through the sales tax are used to advertise and promote city events, which are facilitated through mini and community grants. A mini grant is a tourism-event grant, while a community grant is for a community event. The A&P Commission was created to facilitate Ordinance No. 1692, which created a 3 percent sales tax upon the gross receipts of hotels and motels in the city of Russellville. The commission ensures tax revenue is used for advertising and promotion of Russellville and is formed by members of the local tourism industry and city residents. Christie Graham is the director of the A&P Commission. Other members include Tyler Riley, Al Brown, Shawn Gordon, Sarah Keating and Dusti Yarber. Richard Harris and Robert Wiley are the city liaisons to the commission. For more information, visit www.discoverrussellville.org

TO DO: MOUNTAIN BIKING

RUSSELLVILLE CONNECTED

Trails link local hubs, offer outdoor activities By Ryan Smith

R

ussellville is steadily becoming a city united through a vast system of intricate trails and pathways, intended for walking, running or even mountain biking. The project is called Russellville Connected, and 27 miles of trails are currently available for public use. But there’s more to come. “The idea behind this whole project when it was conceived was to connect all the schools to all the parks to the Downtown area to Arkansas Tech — literally everywhere people are we want to make interconnected,” said Mack Hollis, director of Russellville Recreation and Parks. A project is almost finished to connect the Bona Dea trail system, a local favorite, with Phoenix Avenue by Tech. Hollis said once the asphalt is poured, the trail will be ready

for public use. “The trail is going to meet Phoenix where the climbing wall is at so Tech students and other people don’t have to go on busy roads like Arkansas Avenue or Lakefront Drive to get to Bona Dea,” Hollis said. The designs are also finished on a trail system that will connect Phoenix Avenue, by way of the city’s new Aquatic Center, to the center of Tech’s campus. For a more secluded trail experience, two trails were recently opened just outside of Russellville on Lake Dardanelle. Orbit Lane Trail — a 2.2-mile round trip asphalt trail located at 3694 Pleasant View Road in the competition water ski area in Pleasant View Park — is open to any nonmotorized vehicle. Hollis said the 10-foot-wide, $110,000 trail offers great op-

portunities for running, biking or even pushing babies in strollers to exercise along with the kids. Preliminary designs are currently in the works to have another trail start at Orbit Lane’s north end, go through the park’s disc golf course and wrap around the west end of the lake. “These trails are great recreational and exercise opportunities for the public, like Bona Dea, which is one of the most used parks in Arkansas,” he said. “They’re so expansive, and the work will be ongoing years and years after I’m gone.” The Ouita Coal Co. Mountain Bike Trail, located in Illinois Bayou Park at 6630 U.S. Highway 64 West, extends 10.5 miles through woodland areas and dirt paths. The mountain bike trail was funded completely through voluntary funds, Hollis said, and a local nonprofit mountain biking/trail maintenance and advocacy group has volunteered to take care of the upkeep in a partnership with the city. Doug Housley, board chairman for the River Valley chapter of the Ozark Off Road Cyclists (RVOORC), said 45 volunteers perform clean-ups and maintenance to the trails as needed after working with the city to convert what was 15 miles of unused motocross trails into the newly opened trail. “We do all of the weed-eating and trail repair as a group, and then we all get together and ride the Ouita Trail and the Old Post Mountain Biking Trail once a month each,” Housley said. To get to the Old Post trail, which consists of three loops, bikers can park at the visitor’s center and enter at the trail head there. “Both trails are unique and so much fun, and neither one is so hard that beginners couldn’t ride them, but they’re also a challenge for experienced riders, and that was the goal setting out — to make a trail perfect for riders of all levels.” RVOORC is currently working on securing more land to open 6-10 more miles of trails at an area just outside of Russellville. He said the group meets the first Tuesday of every month at Carr’s Chain Reaction in Russellville. The meetings are free to attend and open to everyone. But not everyone knows about Russellville Connected and the trail system constantly being extended. “People need to be aware we finished more than 10 miles of trails in Russellville in five years, even though all of the trails aren’t connected yet,” Dr. Theresa Herrick, trail committee chairwoman, said. “The public needs to know there are parks full of trails.”

POPE COUNTY

L

FIND IT ALL IN POPE COUNTY

ocated in the heart of the Arkansas River Valley, Pope County provides a beautiful backdrop for a variety of industrial, farming and recreational activities. In the early 1800s, the Osage claimed what is now Pope County as part of their hunting grounds. The area became part of a Cherokee reservation in 1817, but a new treaty moved the Cherokee into Oklahoma in 1828. In 1829, Pope County was the first Arkansas county to be formed out of the former Cherokee reservation. Home to 62,547 residents at the latest census, the county is the 13th most populous in the state. Municipalities within the county include Atkins, Dover, Hector, London, Pottsville and Russellville. Russellville, the county seat, is home to 28,533 residents. The county hosts five K-12 school districts. Arkansas Tech University, an accredited four-year university located in the heart of Russellville, was founded in 1909 and currently offers more than 70 degree programs. In addition to strong educational programs, Pope County is also home to a diverse labor force. Several Fortune 500 companies have facilities in the county, including Firestone Tire and Rubber Company, ConAgra, Dow Chemical, Tyson Foods

and International Paper. Thousands of people are employed by a wide variety of manufacturers in the area, with products ranging from aluminum foil to aircraft components. Pope County is also home to Arkansas Nuclear One, Arkansas’ only nuclear power plant. Life in Pope County is not all work and no play, however. Residents and visitors may take time to relax at one of Russellville’s city parks or relax at Holla Bend National Wildlife Refuge or Lake Dardanelle State Park. The state park visitor’s center, located on the shores of Lake Dardanelle, features an aquarium, a turtle touch table and state-of-the-art touchscreen information kiosks. The park also has rental bicycles and kayaks available and is a popular destination for fishermen, campers and sightseers. After a day at the lake, visitors may enjoy taking a stroll in downtown Russellville. Don’t miss the historic Shinn Building — erected in 1847, the edifice was the first store constructed in Russellville. The city also hosts the Downtown Art Walk, where downtown businesses stay open after hours and host local artists and musicians. No matter the season, visitors to Pope County can always expect to find friendly faces and a warm welcome.

POPE COUNTY

A welcome from the judge Welcome to Pope County, one of the most beautiful counties in the state, with the Ozark National Forest to the north, Lake Dardanelle to the west and Mount Nebo towering magnificently in the distance. With the fertile River Valley lying parallel to Interstate 40, the Union Pacific Railroad and the Arkansas River, transportation is available for area industries and businesses. Excellent school systems located within the county offer quality education for grades K through 12, and Arkansas Tech University offers an outstanding higher education program. Medical facilities are equipped to provide good care and treatment and many churches fulfill the spiritual needs of area residents. Recreational opportunities are available year-round — including hunting, fishing, camping, canoeing, hiking, walking trails, water sports, youth and adult ball leagues and golf — all of which make Pope County one of the most desirable places in the state of Arkansas to live; you are welcome to join us. — Jim Ed Gibson, Pope County Judge

2016 Tourism and Newcomers Guide to the Arkansas River Valley

POPE COUNTY HISTORY T

he history of Pope County really began before the county was a county and when the designation of the territory as Arkansas Territory was just a gleam in the eyes of early settlers. Pope County’s history started in June of 1813 when Revolutionary War veteran Maj. William Lewis Lovely established a Cherokee Indian Agency along the banks of the Illinois Bayou west of present-day Russellville. It was located about a mile above where the bayou joined the Arkansas River. This area was near the center of Cherokee settlements in Arkansas. Lovely, a native of Ireland, was the first of four Indian agents in what later became known as Pope County. The burial place of Lovely, who died in 1817, and his wife, Persis Brown Lovely, are now beneath the waters of Lake Dardanelle. Persis Brown Lovely of Middleton, Conn., died at the age of 71 on Jan. 18, 1842, at the home of pioneer settler Kirkbride Potts near what later became Pottsville. Virtually all of the Indian agency area is today under the waters of Lake Dardanelle, as is the area of Dwight Mission established seven years later along the Illinois Bayou. In 1817, an Indian village was established at a site later called Galla Rock on the banks of the Arkansas River south of present-day Atkins. It later became an important river port town allowing access to the interior of Pope County. The town gradually faded away after the Little Rock and Fort Smith Railroad line went through the county in 1873 north of Galla Rock and near the new town of Atkins. Traces of Galla Rock can still be found — the old cemetery and some faint outlines of where buildings once stood and even the site of an old town well. On March 2, 1819, the Territory of Arkansas was formed from part of the Missouri Territory, which was part of the Louisiana Purchase. The establish-

ment by the Rev. Cephas Washburn of Dwight Mission came just a year later in 1820 near the Indian Agency established by Lovely. The school at Dwight Mission, the first school established west of the Mississippi River, opened on Jan. 1, 1822. Persis Lovely was living on a farm at the former Indian agency when Washburn and his fellow missionaries arrived. They stayed at her home for a time after their arrival, The former Ouita area of Lake Dardanelle State Park was renamed on June 1, 1997, in memory of the legacy of Cephas Washburn. The city of Russellville’s Parks and Recreation Department supervises Cephas Washburn Park, which includes picnic and camping sites and a boatlaunching ramp. The U.S. Highway 64 West arm across the Illinois Bayou, locally known as the causeway, was officially renamed Cherokee Crossing by then-Russellville Mayor Phil Carruth. It was renamed and dedicated to the memory of thousands of Cherokee Indians who called the valley their home until their forced westward migration. Hardships along the trail resulted in its becoming known as the Trail of Tears. Part of the infamous Cherokee Trail of Tears came through Pope County, both by river and by the old Military (or Wire) Road, which linked Little Rock and Fort Smith. Today’s U.S. Highway 64 follows much of the path of the old Wire Road. In 1828, the Cherokees were forced to move to their permanent homes in Oklahoma, then called Indian Territory. Pope County became official on Nov. 2, 1829, when it was formed from part of Crawford County. Pope was the 19th county to be formed in Arkansas Territory and the first in the former Cherokee Territory. Pope County originally

Parts of Newton and Perry counties also were a part of the original Pope County area. Pope County was named for John Pope, the third governor of the Arkansas Territory. A new county needs a seat of government, and a temporary county seat was established at John Balinger’s home on the Arkansas River near Scotia, 12 miles west of present-day Russellville. Courts were held there for two years. A permanent county seat was located in 1830 at the Scotia home of Judge Andrew Scott, appointed a federal judge for the Arkansas Territory. Scotia, named for the judge, was the first of five county seats in Pope County. About 1829, Norristown, a river port town, was established by Samuel Norris on the banks of the Arkansas River south of present-day Russellville and across the river from Dardanelle Rock. The sole trace of where this town was once located is the old Norristown Cemetery now on privately owned property. Tombstones of some of the early settlers, including that of Samuel Norris, remain in the cemetery, which is on the National Register of Historic Places. The Norris name lingers today with Norristown Mountain, or Norristown, in western Russellville. This river port town had begun to decline even before the railroad came through the county. In 1833, the county seat was moved temporarily to Dwight Mission when part of the western section of Pope County was taken away to form Johnson County. The next move of the seat of county government was in 1834 to Norristown, which was in the center of the county. No courthouse or other county buildings were ever erected in Norristown. In the early 1830s, the first settlers moved to an area of northern Pope County, which later became Dover. Arkansas became a state in 1836. On Dec. 5, 1840, Yell County was created from the part of Pope County south of the Arkansas River.

POPE COUNTY

In 1841, the county seat was moved to Dover, which was more in the center of the county. The county seat remained at Dover for the next 46 years. The first courthouse built of logs was burned down during the Civil War. However, the county records were saved because they had been secretly removed from the courthouse during the early years of the war. The records, hidden in a cave north of Dover, were brought back to Dover after the end of the war. Military companies were formed, and the men of Pope County marched off to fight in the Mexican War in the late 1840s and in the Civil War of the 1860s. However, Pope County had its own war sparked by the violence of the times and the period of Reconstruction after the Civil War. Reconstruction came hard to Pope County, and what has been named the Pope County Militia War was an outbreak of violence and murders from 1872 through 1873. However, the Militia War really began in October 1865 with the ambush murder of the first county sheriff after the war. He had been an officer in the Union Army. The Militia War can be said to have ended in 1875 with the arrest of a man for an 1872 murder. The charge was later dismissed. During the 10-year period, six elected or appointed county officials were murdered. Others killed included the commander of an Army detachment stationed at Dover during the height of the Militia War violence and a number of private citizens. Village on the Prairie The seed of today’s Russellville was planted in 1834 when J.C. Holledger built the first house on the Chatas Prairie, a two-story structure of handhewn oak logs. The next year Dr. Thomas Russell, a native of England, arrived on the prairie with his family and bought the Holledger house. The house was located on a corner of what is today the intersection of West Main Street and Houston Avenue. The Village on the Prairie was in 1842 named for Russell, the first doctor to settle in the area. Some people wanted to name it for Jacob L. Shinn, a prominent businessman who built the first store in Russellville. In the 1870s Shinn built a two-story brick store building, which still stands today at the southeast corner of the intersection of West Main Street and Denver Avenue in Russellville. This structure is among a number of historic structures in the downtown historical district of the city. The city was incorporated June 7, 1870, but the town really began to grow after the railroad went through the county in 1873. In the more than 160 years that have passed since that first house, Russellville has grown into a thriving industrial and business hub at the crossroads of two major highways — State Highway 7 and U.S. Highway 64.

TO DO: ROCK CLIMBING

of the Rocky Mountains, climbers can experience some of the finest sandstone cliffs in the world. For more information, call 870-446-2577. Across the Arkansas River is Dardanelle Rock — a landmark for travelers in the era of exploration. The crag is known for hard routes, although there’s not many of them. With an easy access point and routes named Money Shot, Natural Born Drillers, Rebel Yell and Stark Naked, it’s obvious the old Native American- and Confederate-soldier lookout is a popular destination for regional climbers. Southwest of Russellville is Arkansas’ highest-peak — Mount Magazine — and most popular climbing location. With more than 100 routes up to 80-feet high, the overlook crag offers views of the valleys below. Near Paris, climbers should register at the visitor’s center before heading to the peak, which is near the hang glider launch site. For those less with less experience, The Wall, a climbing center in Russellville, offers more than 100 routes for all skill levels. The indoor climbing facility provides climbing regardless of weather at an affordable rate. For more information, call The Wall at 479-890-9255. The Arkansas Climbers Coalition, a nonprofit organization, is dedicated to preserving and protecting climbing areas across the state. Some recent work includes installation of restroom facilities at Sam’s Throne, rebolting routes and replacing dangerous bolts and anchors, working with Arkansas Natural

Heritage Commission to restore and maintain Dardanelle Rock and repairing trails at Horseshoe Canyon Ranch. For more information about the organization, email info@arkansasclimbers.org

TO DO: LDSP VISITORS CENTER

Opened in 2003, the Visitors Center boasts 8,000 gallons of aquariums that represent the Arkansas River, local tributaries and Lake Dardanelle. The aquariums contain fish that live in the lake, river and tributaries and visitors can see them up close and watch their behavior. One of the biggest attractions to the youngsters who visit the park is the aquatic turtle touch table, where kids can interact with live turtles. There are also several live animal exhibits in the kids corner that contain snakes, lizards, frogs and other creatures found in the park, that kids and adults alike can admire, as well as a honeybee exhibit. Interactive, touch-screen computer kiosks feature information on aquatic resources and the history and culture of the Arkansas River Valley. These interactive exhibits allow visitors to choose the subjects they want to discover more about. Park interpreters host environmental education programs throughout the year on the park’s resources using the center’s state-of-the-art classroom with digital projectors and surround sound. The programs are linked to the school curriculum frameworks so that teachers and students can enjoy learning in this beautiful outdoor classroom. The classroom, which opens up to a balcony that overlooks Lake Dardanelle, has also become a hot spot for weddings, family reunions and corporate training. The facility sits on the shore of Lake Dardanelle, providing breathtaking views of the lake and something for every visitor to enjoy. The park also provides pavilions, launch ramps, a marina, kayak and paddle board rentals and a hiking trail, and it has provided more and more people with a safe, economical vacation spot. The park has changed a great deal during the past few years. What began as mainly a camping destination has blossomed into a premier site for environmental education, conservation and community pride.

Welcome to Yell County! Yell County was established by the state legislature in November 1840. The county covers an area of about 930 square miles. Yell County was named after the second governor of Arkansas, Archibald Yell. There are many diverse industries in Yell County, but most revolve around agriculture, such as timber, poultry, cattle and crops. Tourism and recreation play a major role in Yell County’s economy. The area has many lakes and mountains and is part of two national forests. Lake Dardanelle, Nimrod Lake and Blue Mountain Lake all offer a variety of outdoor activities such as boating, fishing, skiing and swimming. The crown jewel of Yell County is Mount Nebo State Park. It rises 1,000 feet above the Arkansas River Valley and has cabins, campsites, picnic sites, a swimming pool, hiking trails and the most breathtaking view of the surrounding valleys. I would like to take this opportunity to welcome everyone to Yell County or, as we like to say, “The Free State of Yell!” Welcome and God bless. — Mark Thone, Yell County Judge

2016 Tourism and Newcomers Guide to the Arkansas River Valley

TO DO: PADDLEBOARDING

SURFING THE RIVER VALLEY By Cameron Tate

A relatively new sport, stand up paddleboarding (SUP), has started to make its way to the Arkansas River Valley which has an abundance of waterways, providing paddleboarders with plenty of opportunities to experience and enjoy this new outdoor sport. Combining balance and core exercise with outdoor adventure and sightseeing, this sport has something for everyone. Stand up paddleboarding started to become a sport around the 1940s, when surfers steered their surfboards with a paddle while standing to help give them a better view of incoming waves and other surfers. Now, SUP is one of the fastest growing watersports and has recently started moving from the coasts, inland. Combining a surfstyle board and a long paddle, SUP is a cross between surfing and canoeing. Unlike surfing, paddleboarding does not require waves and an ocean, but can be done on almost any waterway, such as the lakes and rivers in the River Valley. Being able to give the surfing experience to people who don’t live near an ocean is one of the reasons the sport has become so popular — even in Arkansas. SUP is rapidly increasing in popularity, not only because of the fun, but also due to the health benefits that it offers. “The reason so many people are drawn to paddleboarding is that it’s an amazing full-body workout that improves your core strength, cardio fitness, balance and flexibility with virtually no impact,” said Cody White, certified PaddleFit instructor and co-founder of Finger Lakes Paddleboard. “Plus, it’s fun to get out on the water and enjoy nature, so it hardly feels like exercise.

TO DO: PADDLEBOARDING

“I think it would be great for it to catch on. I think that it’s a sport that people could get into in the rivers around here that are a little tamer. It would be great for families to try out. Even though paddleboarding is a total-body workout, people of all ages and fitness levels can try the sport.” Bringing surfing back to River Valley Paddleboarders can be found on Lake Dardanelle, Big Piney Creek, the Mulberry River and the Illinois Bayou. The lake offers beginners the chance to familiarize themselves with paddleboarding in a calm, stress free and wave free environment. Experienced paddleboarders have recently started making their way to Big Piney Creek, the Mulberry and the Illinois Bayou, which already attracts canoers, kayakers and rafters. Dover native Josh Meyers grew up going down the surrounding rivers. Like many locals, he was introduced to canoeing and kayaking when he was a kid. “It’s something that I did since I was a kid,” Meyers said. “I was kind of involved through Boy Scouts, but it was something that I really got into when I was about 20. I got more

involved right out of high school when I purchased my own canoe, and then several years later, I got a kayak as well. So about 10 or 12 years.” After moving to California, Meyers took up surfing as a hobby to keep him close to the water. As an outdoor lover drawn to the water, Meyers said that learning to surf seemed natural. When Meyers returned to Arkansas, he kept his love for surfing, and canoeing and kayaking were not enough anymore.

“I wanted something a little more adventurous,” Meyers said. “Something else to try and tackle, and paddleboarding is like surfing. When you get in a wave it’s very similar. You use your paddle more in the waves, instead of your body like in surfing, but it is very similar. It seemed like a good core exercise as well. I like fitness and it seemed like a good way to go out, have a lot of fun and get a great workout.” Meyers has been paddleboarding local rivers for over a year and has been able to make the same runs as experienced canoers and kayakers. He has even been able to paddleboard the portion of Big Piney Creek known as Helton’s Farm Down, which is one of the more difficult runs and contains the infamous rapids known as “The Mother.” “I definitely say the Big Piney and Illinois Bayou are my favorite around here,” Meyers said. “I really enjoy Helton’s Down. There is the roller coaster and the surfing rapids on it (Helton’s). It makes it an all day event. The Illinois Bayou has a lot of great spots — Goats Hole is a really good one. Richland Creek is one of the best as well.” Even though this sport has not quite caught on in this part of the country, Meyers still loves it and intends to continue paddleboarding. “I plan to keep doing this recreationally for sure,” Meyers said. “I think it would be great for it to catch on. I think that it’s a sport that people could get into in the rivers around here that are a little tamer. It would be great for families to try out. But, I would definitely recommend taking it to the lake before you take it to the creek or river.”

TO DO: RUSSVEGAS HALF MARATHON

RUSSVEGAS HALF MARATHON

I

n 2014, the first RussVegas Half marathon attracted over 1,000 runners and a community that proved it could do more than host a 13.1-mile race. The event began as a race and grew into a festival by its second year. Now, it spans more than two days and includes the Glow Run 5k and Kid’s Fun Mile the day before. The 2016 race, which benefited Arkansas Children’s Hospital and the River Valley Circle of Friends, showed off downtown Russellville as 1,750 racers made their way through the city course. The 2016 RussVegas Half featured spirit stations and invited people from their neighborhoods to come out and support the runners. The race included a festival that featured a kid’s mile, 5K glow run, car show, expo, food and live entertainment. The half marathon course featured five local bands and 24 spirit stations, made up of volunteers, residents, local businesses and organizations who wanted to show runners their

support. Race director Chris Olson said he wanted people to come out of their neighborhoods and watch the race with their cups of coffee. 2015 was also the first year the half marathon supported Arkansas Children’s Hospital (ACH) through the Angels program, which gave participants the opportunity to qualify for free entry to the half marathon and raise a minimum of $300 to benefit ACH. The event continues to grow in participation. “It’s going really good,” Olson said. “I would say across the board we are up 25-30 percent in participation from last year.” Olson said he wants a fun race that has a great atmosphere with the community that is also a fundraiser for a great organization in the state. He added that 5,050 patients from Pope County went to ACH in 2015. have been called the “best-kept secret in the state; Horsehead Hiking Trail; and the Wolfpen Recreation Area adjacent to the Mulberry River with canoe ramp access to the river. Also known for its annual Peach Festival, which takes place in mid-July, Johnson County is perfectly suited for orchards, berry farms and other agricultural pursuits. With a population of 25,846, Johnson County has three main municipalities: Clarksville, the county seat; Lamar; and Knoxville. Johnson County is also home to the University of the Ozarks in Clarksville, a private, Presbyterian-affiliated, four-year liberal arts university located at 415 N. College Ave. The university houses the Stephens Gallery, providing its guests a showplace for their creations. The 1,500 square feet of the gallery provide ample wall and floor space in which to exhibit works in a variety of artistic mediums and styles, while the arched windows to the east flood the display area with a soft, pleasing light. Two permanent collections donated to the university are on display in the gallery, the Pfeffer Collection and the Arch H. Gould Collection. The county is also home to three school districts, Clarksville, Lamar and Johnson County Westside. The Jasper district also has a presence. Johnson County was formed from a portion of neighboring Pope County on Nov. 16, 1833, and was named Johnson honoring the first territorial judge of Arkansas, Benjamin Johnson. The county is home to several historic places of note, including the county courthouse, the Missouri-Pacific Depot and several historic homes. Whether a visitor’s interests are in the outdoors, history or art, Johnson County offers plenty to make a trip worthwhile.

2016 Tourism and Newcomers Guide to the Arkansas River Valley

STATE PARKS

State Parks Those visiting the Arkansas River Valley in search of outdoor recreation will be thrilled to see the variety and abundance of facilities the area provides for this type of activity. Through the combination of state parks at Lake Dardanelle and Mount Nebo and the number of projects provided by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the activities are numerous for those enjoying the outdoors, whether it be spending the day fishing or taking in the sights of a nature trail or enjoying a night of camping. Rare is the occasion through the spring, summer and fall when there isn’t a weekend fishing tournament taking place on Lake Dardanelle. The 35,000-acre body of water stretches westward from the Dardanelle Lock and Dam into Pope, Yell, Johnson, Logan and Franklin counties and provides excellent waters for black bass, crappie, catfish walleye, bluegill, bream, redear and white bass. Lake Dardanelle is noted as one of the state’s premier black bass lakes. It contains various structures – coves, tributaries, rock piles, shallows, flats, jetties and islands – that this type of fish finds attractive. As temperatures begin to warm in late March, black bass love to move up into the creeks and streams that bass fishing areas are Spadra Creek and Little Spadra Creek near Clarksville and the Shoal Creek area near New Blaine. Black bass are attracted to the areas where 5- to 10-foot depths jump up to 2- and 3-foot flats for spawning purposes, and numerous fish ranging from one pound and up are found there. The Illinois Bayou, which runs into the east end of the lake, is another attractive site for black bass. The dark shale bottom located near the Interstate 40 bridge provides warm water earlier, and many anglers take advantage of that to catch early black bass. Lake Dardanelle is also a Largemouth Bass fishery with Largemouth ranging from 5 to 7-pounds commonly caught. Cradled between the Ouachita and Ozark Mountains, Nimrod Lake has proven popular with fishers and hunters since it was completed in 1942. It is the oldest Corps of Engineers lake in the state. The most popular fish harbored in the waters of Nimrod Lake are crappie, largemouth bass, bream, catfish and white bass. Anglers have become accustomed to large slab crappie tugging on their hooks and making their bobbers dance at Nimrod. In-season hunting is permitted throughout the lake area except in or near parks. A 2,400-acre green tree public duck hunting area is available on project lands and 3,800 acres are managed for propagation of bobwhite quail and upland game. Those who enjoy sports are not alone in appreciat-

ing Nimrod. There are seven parks nestled along the lake where a family or individual can picnic, camp or just relax amid the groves of tall, sweet-scented pines. The parks are equipped with tent and trailer spaces, tables, grills, fire rings, playgrounds, fish cleaning stations, boat launch ramps, trash cans, municipal water, electricity and showers. Nimrod is conveniently located adjacent to State Highway 7, which is a National Scenic Byway. The most popular of the trails in the area is the Bona Dea Trails in Russellville, with an estimated 172,100 visits to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers project in 2000. The facility is for day use only, with hiking and interpretive trails located near Lake Dardanelle, with the two being separated by Lake Front Drive.

Woody’s Boot & Repair “The Best Little Boot Warehouse in the River Valley!”

The Meadowbrook self-guided trail is located inside Lake Dardanelle State Park. The three-quarter mile trail is considered easy with regard to hiking difficulty, with 30 minutes being the estimated time for completion. The trails theme is Native trees and their uses throughout history. The trail begins and ends at the park’s amphitheater and provides a theme of change, illustrated by the succession of plants, man’s influence on the environment and the variety of flowers, plants and trees in the Arkansas River Valley. The Bench Trail is considered the easier of two trails at Mount Nebo State Park. Beginning at the overlook shelter seen during the drive up the mountain, the trail gets its name from a narrow shelf called a bench that encircles the entire mountain. The four-mile trail through a woodland teeming with large trees and wildlife is level in most places and displays excellent mountain scenery, especially during the fall. The Summit Park Trail is a one-mile trail on Mount Nebo and is considered moderate to strenuous in difficulty. The loop trail, named for the Summit Park Hotel built near the trailhead in 1889, begins at a point on the northwest side of the top

of the mountain and meanders down to Fern Lake along a similar path that was first used by the guests of the famous hotel. The Civilian Conservation improved the trail with beautiful work in the 1930s. The Arkansas River Valley is brimming with various sites for those wanting to spend a warm spring or summer night outdoors, whether it be on the higher elevation of Mount Nebo or near the waters of Lake Dardanelle and its tributaries, the Arkansas River or Lake Nimrod. Mount Nebo is located west of Dardanelle and towers 1,350 feet above the Arkansas River Valley. A portion of the mountain was chosen as a park site in 1933, and logs and stones from the mountain were used by the Civilian Conservation Corps to construct many of the parks bridges, trails, rustic-style cabins and pavilions. There are 24 campsites (Class B, 10 hike-in) on Mount Nebo, along with 14 fullyequipped cabins with kitchens. This is the best little town in Arkansas Come for a visit and you might stay!

Originally occupied by Native American Choctaw and Cherokee tribes, Pottsville’s more current history began with Kirkbride Potts. In 1820 at just 17 years old, Potts traveled from New Jersey to Missouri and Arkansas. After settling in several areas along the way and making a trip to California’s goldrich hills, Potts built his home at the base of Crow Mtn in the 1850s. Potts’ home eventually became a resting stop for travelers and a stagecoach mail stop for the Butterfield Overland Mail. The town grew around Potts Inn and became known as Pottsville

in honor of Kirkbride Potts. The town was incorporated in 1897 and remained a small community until the development of dozens of homes in Pottsville, doubling Pottsville’s population to more than 2,800 between 2000 and 2010. EDUCATION

ARKANSAS TECH UNIVERSITY

What will the next generation of leaders discover at ATU? They will find a learning environment that has created one of the top two graduation rates among all public universities in Arkansas. Arkansas Tech offers more than 120 programs of study, including the five areas most popular among college freshmen — business, engineering, the natural and health sciences, the social sciences and teacher education. Pre-professional programs prepare Tech students to become doctors, dentists, lawyers, pharmacists, physical therapists and veterinarians. Home to more than 12,000 students, Arkansas Tech is the

third-largest institution of higher learning in the Natural State. Enrollment at Arkansas Tech has increased by 184 percent since 1997. Fall 2015 marked the 17th consecutive year that Arkansas Tech has established a new institutional record for largest enrollment. The “Almanac of Higher Education 2015” by The Chronicle of Higher Education reported that Arkansas Tech is among the 10 fastest-growing master’s degree-granting universities in the United States for a third consecutive year. The growth is bolstered by the largest freshman class in

Libraries Pope County Library System The Pope County Library System consists of the Russellville Library and three branches in Atkins, Dover and Hector. Russellville Heritage Hall, adjacent to the Russellville Library, is available as a community meeting room. The building is the former library and is designated as an historic building on the National Registry. The library system is funded by a one-mill county property tax approved by county voters in 1997. The library is governed by an appointed five-member administrative board.
