ocated between the Ozark and Ouachita Mountains, the Arkansas River Valley acts as a hub to renowned rock climbing locations and is home to an indoor climbing facility. Located about 50 miles north of Russellville on State Highway 123 is popularclimbing destination: Sam’s Throne. The outcropping includes routes like Blind Man’s Bluff, Fun Alley Wall, The Outback and Valley of the Blind. On top of Judea Mountain and overlooking Big Creek valley, the location is not only popular to climbers but also hikers and photographers. Other nearby climbing routes include Cave Creek, Rickett Mountain, Kent Mountain and Cherokee Crags. Horseshoe Canyon Ranch spans 35 acres near the Buffalo National River west of Jasper. With more than 300 routes, Horseshoe Canyon Ranch offers guided climbs for both experienced and first-timers. Dubbed one of the best climbing areas west of the Rocky Mountains, climbers can experience some of the finest sandstone cliffs in the world. For more information, call (870) 4462577. Across the Arkansas River is Dardanelle Rock — a landmark for travelers in the era of exploration. The crag is known for hard routes, although there’s not many of them. With an easy access point and routes named Money Shot, Natural Born Drillers, Rebel Yell and Stark Naked, it’s obvious the old Native American- and Confederatesoldier lookout is a popular destination for regional climbers.

to do: Reach the summit Southwest of Russellville is Arkansas’ highest peak — Mount Magazine — and most popular climbing location. With more than 100 routes up to 80 feet high, the overlook crag offers views of the valleys below. Near Paris, climbers should register at the visitor’s center before heading to the peak, which is near the hang glider launch site. For those with less experience, The Wall, a climbing center in Russellville, offers more than 100 routes for all skill levels. The indoor climbing facility provides climbing regardless of weather at an affordable rate. For more information, call The Wall at (479) 890-9255. The Arkansas Climbers Coalition, a nonprofit organization, is dedicated to preserving and protecting climbing areas across the state. Some recent work includes installation of restroom facilities at Sam’s Throne, rebolting routes and replacing dangerous bolts and anchors, working with the Arkansas Natural Heritage Commission to restore and maintain Dardanelle Rock and repairing trails at Horseshoe Canyon Ranch. rom mountain views that lend themselves to spectacular sunsets to clean and clear lakes, streams and rivers, Johnson County has many sights for nature lovers to take in and enjoy. The scenic combination of Johnson County offers an ideal setting for all types of recreational activities, including those at the county’s city parks, softball complex, baseball fields, soccer fields, swimming pool, riverfront pavilions, hiking trails and family fishing pond. For more involved outdoor excursions, the county has numerous opportunities, including Haw Creek Falls; Horsehead Lake, a 98-acre mountain lake with 10 family camping units that Johnson County Judge Herman H. Houston calls the “best-kept secret” in the state; Horsehead Hiking Trail; and the Wolfpen Recreation Area adjacent to the Mulberry River with canoe ramp access to the river. Also known for its annual Peach Festival, which takes place in mid-July, Johnson County is perfectly suited for orchards, berry farms and other agricultural pursuits.

johnson county

With a population of 25,846, Johnson County has three main municipalities: Clarksville, the county seat; Lamar; and Knoxville. Johnson County is also home to the University of the Ozarks in Clarksville, a private, Presbyterian-affiliated, four-year liberal arts university located at 415 N. College Ave. The university houses the Stephens Gallery, providing its guests a showplace for their creations. The 1,500 square feet of the gallery provide ample wall and floor space in which to exhibit works in a variety of artistic mediums and styles, while the arched windows to the east flood the display area with a soft, pleasing light. Two permanent collections donated to the university are on display in the gallery, the

Pfeffer Collection and the Arch H. Gould Collection. The county is also home to three school districts, Clarksville, Lamar and Johnson County Westside. The Jasper district also has a presence. Johnson County was formed from a portion of neighboring Pope County on Nov. 16, 1833, and was named Johnson honoring the first territorial judge of Arkansas, Benjamin Johnson. The county is home to several historic places of note, including the county courthouse, the Missouri-Pacific Depot and several historic homes. Whether a visitor’s interests are in the outdoors, history or art, Johnson County offers plenty to make a trip worthwhile.

ooking for a place to enjoy the outdoors? Look no further than Petit Jean State Park, a breathtaking area that’s more than worth the trip. “The park is very unique,” said Theresa Herrick, a recreation and park administration professor at Arkansas Tech University in Russellville who previously worked for state parks. “If you’re a newcomer, it’s just a wonderful place to drive up to, especially from Russellville. In 30 minutes, you can be up in a whole new area. The views from up there are just awesome, and there’s so much to do.” Petit Jean offers some of the most beautiful sights and diverse nature-oriented activities in the state. Visitors have a choice of 10 hiking trails, ranging in difficulty from gentle strolls to serious challenges, as well as fishing at Bailey and Roosevelt lakes. “Hiking the trails is just wonderful. There’s so many available to hike,” Herrick said. The park offers boat rentals from Memorial Day through Labor Day, allowing those who didn’t bring their own crafts

to test the waters. It also boasts an array of facilities, including two swimming pools, two playgrounds and tables perfect for picnicking. Visitors have the option to spend their outdoor retreat in one of more than 30 cabins Petit Jean State Park offers, some modern and some rustic. The cabins include fireplaces and amenities, but the park also features more than 100 campsites for those inclined to enjoy a weekend retreat in a tent. “It’s a great destination tourism area, because everything you need is there,” Herrick said. “Arkansas is one of the best-kept secrets for outdoor recreation in the country. It’s just a dreamland for people that love hiking or river rafting or just spending time in the wilderness.” Petit Jean was briefly considered for designation as a national park in the 1920s but was deemed too small. Instead, it garnered the title of Arkansas’ first state park. “The park is a wonderful gift to the state,” Herrick said. Visit petitjeanstatepark.com for more information.

Find it all in Pope County

L

ocated in the heart of the Arkansas River Valley, Pope County provides a beautiful backdrop for a variety of industrial, farming and recreational activities. In the early 1800s, the Osage claimed what is now Pope County as part of their hunting grounds. The area became part of a Cherokee reservation in 1817, but a new treaty moved the Cherokee into Oklahoma in 1828. In 1829, Pope County was the first Arkansas county to be formed out of the former Cherokee reservation. Home to 62,547 residents at the latest census, the county is the 13th most populous in the state. Municipalities within the county include Atkins, Dover, Hector, London, Pottsville and Russellville. Russellville, the county seat, is home to 28,533 residents. The county hosts five K-12 school districts. Arkansas Tech University, an accredited four-year university located in the heart of Russellville, was founded in 1909 and currently offers more than 70 degree programs. In addition to strong educational programs, Pope County is also home to a diverse labor force. Several Fortune 500 companies have facilities in the county, including Firestone Tire and Rubber Company, ConAgra, Dow Chemical, Tyson Foods and International Paper. Thousands of people are employed by a wide variety of manufacturers in the area, with products ranging from aluminum foil to aircraft components. Pope County is also home to Arkansas Nuclear One, Arkansas’ only nuclear power plant. Life in Pope County is not all work and no play, however.

Residents and visitors may take time to relax at one of Russellville’s city parks or relax at Holla Bend Natural Wildlife Refuge or Lake Dardanelle State Park. The state park visitor’s center, located on the shores of Lake Dardanelle, features an aquarium, a turtle touch table and state-of-the-art touchscreen information kiosks. The park also has rental bicycles and kayaks available and is a popular destination for fishermen, campers and sightseers. After a day at the lake, visitors may enjoy taking a stroll in downtown Russellville. Don’t miss the historic Shinn Building — erected in 1847, the edifice was the first store constructed in Russellville. The city also hosts the Downtown Art Walk, where downtown businesses stay open after hours and host local artists and musicians. No matter the season, visitors to Pope County can always expect to find friendly faces and a warm welcome.

ell County was established by the state legislature in November 1840. The county covers an area of about 930 square miles. Yell County was named after the second governor of Arkansas, Archibald Yell. There are many diverse industries in Yell County, but most revolve around agriculture, such as timber, poultry, cattle and crops. Tourism and recreation play a major role in Yell County’s economy. The area has many lakes and mountains and is part of two national forests. Lake Dardanelle, Nimrod Lake and Blue Mountain Lake all offer a variety of outdoor activities such as boating, fishing, skiing and swimming. The crown jewel of Yell County is Mount Nebo State Park. It rises 1,000 feet above the Arkansas River Valley and has cabins, campsites, picnic sites, a swimming pool, hiking trails and the most breathtaking view of the surrounding valleys. I would like to take this opportunity to welcome everyone to Yell County or, as we like to say, “The Free State of Yell!” Welcome and God bless. — Mark Thone Yell County Judge

to do: call the hog(s)

Tusk IV’s caravan through Russellville By Travis Simpson he heart of the Arkansas Razorbacks is hidden away on a farm near Dardanelle in Yell County. Although specifics aren’t available to the public, the University of the Arkansas’ live mascot, Tusk IV — a 350-pound male Russian boar — makes his home nearby. While his location remains undisclosed, his departure from the farm is well observed. Tusk travels through Russellville, briefly stopping at PDQ North and PDQ South for miniature pep-rallies, before continuing to Fayetteville to watch the Razorbacks from his spot on the sideline. Tusk IV, like his lineage, blares the University of Arkansas fight song from his truck and trailer as he caravans across the state for mascot responsibilities.

T

“Our day starts at least eight hours before kickoff, sometimes even the night before,” Tusk IV’s handler Keith Stokes said. “We usually head out about five hours before kickoff, stop at Russellville and do pep-rallies. You know, we play the fight song and stuff. A lot of times fans will correspond their trip with us up to the hill. It’s like a caravan to the game. It’s like traveling with a rock star.” Tusk IV’s truck and trailer was donated by Truck Centers of Arkansas. He lives in an 8,000 square-foot heated and cooled facility. The Stokes family survives on donations to the Tusk Trust and generous alumni. They are not paid for their time. For Stokes, it’s a labor of love. “I’ve always loved animals. I’ve always loved the Razorbacks.

To do: call the hog(s) This was a way for me to marry the two,” he said. It began when former UA athletic director Frank Broyles approached ex-Razorback football player and all-around state sports celebrity commentator David Bazzel about how to increase attendance and excitement for the Razorbacks during a down year. “I was the president of the Arkansas Pork Producers Association at the time,” he said. “We [Razorbacks] weren’t having such a great year back then, there was some coaching turmoil at the hill and after Broyles contacted Bazzel, the thing David wanted to was step up the atmosphere with a live mascot.

“In the past, we had had farm pigs, but they wanted a real razorback. A farm pig is totally different. He contacted the association and we helped him find one.” The original Tusk lived at the Little Rock Zoo, but every boar since was sired from the previous pig, with the exception of Tusk IV who was sired from Tusk II. Tusk III was his uncle. “Tusk IV was born here and handled from day one,” Stokes said. “In a way that makes him more dangerous because when a wild animal gets used to you, he doesn’t think you are a person, he thinks you are a 300 pound animal like himself. He’d never intentionally hurt you, though.” Tusk doesn’t travel to many away games. Stokes said they attend the games in Dallas due to a large fanbase and they attend all bowl games. “We have the home games down to a science because we’ve done them so often,” he said. “It’s amazing going down the highway with Tusk and people honking, taking pictures and trying to get a look. “We remind ourselves that they aren’t hollering for you. They are hollering for that animal. I don’t want the recognition. The most I want is that whoever looks at him to know that he is well taken care of. We aren’t in it for the glory.”

ome call it the fastest-growing sport that you’ve never heard of — but you’d be hard pressed to find someone in the Russellville area who isn’t familiar with disc golf. Russellville is home to two premier disc golf courses, one at Old Post Park and the other at Pleasant View Park. Disc golf is played much like golf, except instead of clubs and golf balls, disc golfers use frisbee-like discs and chain baskets to work their way around a course. The Pleasant View course is built around inlets of Lake Dardanelle and is a mix of open and wooded holes. The course is 18 baskets across 5,801 feet of moderately hilly and lightly wooded grassland. The Old Post course is 18 baskets across 6,281 feet of varied terrain. The holes begin near the Arkansas River and move through the woods toward Caudle Overlook. Both courses are maintained by The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the River Valley Disc Golf Association (RVDGA). “We’re extremely lucky to have two disc golf facilities of this

caliber in our town,” RVDGA president Matt Loyd said. “These are championship-caliber courses and people travel from all over to use them. These are people that are spending money in our hotels, at our gas stations and on our food. It’s very good for the community and good for those with an interest in disc golf.” RVDGA was founded in 2008. Loyd took over presidential duties in 2009. He said there’s never a shortage of people to play with. When he took over, the club had 25 members. Last year they sold 89 memberships at 15 dollars each. “It’s been a blast,” Loyd said. “It’s a labor of love for me and with such growing popularity, that means there can be more tournaments.” Loyd said the fees go toward paying for the tournaments hosted in Russellville, of which there are currently five. The Vintage Open, NPC Championship, Arkansas Amateur Championship and the War of the Shore are all official Professional Disc Golf Association (PDGA) B-Tier tournaments. The group also hosts an annual 3-man scramble in March with proceeds from

the tournament going to charity. The RVDGA encourages anyone interested in disc golf to grab some friends and give it a try. “We have people of all types that play,” Loyd said. “We have kids, doctors, preachers and college students — just about anyone you can imagine. We are super lucky to have the club because it brings in all walks of life. There’s really not just one type of person that loves disc golf.” The allure? According to Loyd the game is easy to learn, difficult to master and a good way to spend time with family and friends. “When you go to play regular golf — we call it ball golf — usually there are fees involved with getting to play on the course,” he said. “Disc golf is usually free. For something that doesn’t cost any money, it’s good exercise. You get to get outdoors in nice parks.” Disc golfers use a range of different discs similar to the variety of clubs a golfer might use for various shots. Disc golfers aren’t limited by their throws either. There is the usual frisbee throw but disc-golfers also make shots over handed and sometimes even roll their discs downhill to set up future shots. “Some golfers carry dozens of discs with them,” Loyd said. “It’s a great sport that you can play as casually or competitively as you want.”

Get interactive at Lake Dardanelle State Park Visitors center lauded a paradise within a paradise

N

ature lovers coming to the Arkansas River Valley will delight in the variety of parks, reserves, campgrounds and lakes available to enjoy at little cost, and the Lake Dardanelle State Park Visitors Center is the proverbial cherry on top. “The Visitors Center here is a nice facility,” Andy Thomas, former superintendent of Lake Dardanelle State Park, said. “I’ve worked for Arkansas State Parks for years, and I literally remember the time when the governor would come in, (and) we would have to pull the boards off the back of buildings and nail them on the front to make them presentable.” In 1996, Arkansas passed Amendment 76, an eight-cent conservation tax that benefits the state parks, and led Arkansas to become one of the country’s leaders in state parks systems. Opened in 2003, the Visitors Center boasts 8,000 gallons of aquariums that represent the Arkansas River, local tributaries and Lake Dardanelle. “The aquariums are really neat,” Thomas said. “They’re set up like the river system is. We have the big tanks, the tributary tanks that have species in them you would find in the lake’s tributaries, and they feed into the river tanks.” One of the biggest attractions to the youngsters who visit the park is the aquatic turtle touch table, where kids can interact with live turtles. There are also several snakes that kids and adults alike can admire, as well as a honeybee exhibit. Interactive, touch-screen computer kiosks feature information on aquatic resources and the history and culture of the Arkansas River Valley, and have age settings to tailor the information to the viewer. Park interpreters host environmental education programs throughout the year in the center’s state-of-the-art classroom with digital projectors and surround sound. Local kids gain course credit at their schools through the programs. “We have some great educators out here, and we have a great partnership with our River Valley schools,” Thomas said. “We’re an extension of their classrooms. They can come out here and study micro-invertebrates or anything.” The classroom, which opens up to a balcony that overlooks Lake Dardanelle, has also become a hot spot for weddings. The facility sits on the shore of Lake Dardanelle, providing breathtaking views of the lake and something for every visitor to enjoy. The park also provides pavilions, launch ramps, a marina, bicycle and kayak rentals and a hiking trail, and it has

provided more and more people with a safe, economical vacation spot. “People are staying closer to home, with the gas prices the way that they are,” Thomas said. “They’re not going to Disney World or Gulf Shores. I think they’ve been to the casinos — been there, done that. They’re looking for a quality vacation that’s economical.” The park has changed a great deal during the past few years. What began as mainly a camping destination has blossomed into a premier site for environmental education, conservation and community pride.

Heart Stories from Home James Brown | Cardiac Cath Patient

HIS TREATMENT STARTED WITH HIS HEART STOPPING. While waking up his wife and saying he needed to go to the hospital, James Brown was already experiencing a heart attack. Upon arriving at Saint Mary’s Regional Medical Center, he fell to the floor and his heart flat-lined. With the cath lab just minutes away, Dr. Ahmed Athar and his team went to work immediately. Having the cardiac expertise and capabilities close by saved James’ life. Following two implanted stents and a defibrillator, James is recovering well and gradually regaining his independence. The greatest example of this can be seen on the back roads of the River Valley where he loves to ride his Harley. “The nurses did everything to help me rest and heal,” said James. “And my doctor visited me every day; that meant a lot.”

2015 Tourism and Newcomers Guide to the Arkansas River Valley

State parks

State Parks Those visiting the Arkansas River Valley in search of outdoor recreation will be thrilled to see the variety and abundance of facilities the area provides for this type of activity. Through the combination of state parks at Lake Dardanelle and Mount Nebo and the number of projects provided by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the activities are numerous for those enjoying the outdoors, whether it be spending the day fishing or taking in the sights of a nature trail or enjoying a night of camping. Rare is the occasion through the spring, summer and fall when there isn’t a weekend fishing tournament taking place on Lake Dardanelle. The 35,000-acre body of water stretches westward from the Dardanelle Lock and Dam into Pope, Yell, Johnson, Logan and Franklin counties and provides excellent waters for white bass, crappie, stripers, catfish walleye, bluegill, redear and black bass. Lake Dardanelle is noted as one of the states premier white bass lakes. It contains various structures – coves, tributaries, rock piles, shallows, flats, jetties and islands – that this type of fish finds attractive. As temperatures begin to warm in late March, largemouth bass and other fish species, such as white bass, love to move up into the creeks and streams that feed the lake in search of spawning sites. White bass are attracted to the areas where 5- to 10-foot depths jump up to 2- and 3-foot flats for spawning purposes, and numerous fish ranging from one pound and up are found there. The Illinois Bayou, which runs into the east end of the lake, is another attractive site for white bass. The dark shale bottom located near the Interstate 40 bridge provides warm water earlier, and many anglers take advantage of that to catch early white bass. Lake Dardanelle is also considered one of the state’s premier locations for striped bass because of the lake’s fertileness. Area fishing reports indicate stripers weighing 20 pounds are a possibility along with fish ranging from two to six pounds. Cradled between the Ouachita and Ozark Mountains, Nimrod Lake has proven popular with fishers and hunters since it was completed in 1942. It is the oldest Corps of Engineers lake in the state. The most popular fish harbored in the waters of Nimrod Lake are crappie, largemouth bass, bream, catfish and white bass. Anglers have become accustomed to large slab crappie tugging on their hooks and making their bobbers dance at Nimrod. In-season hunting is permitted throughout the lake area except in or near parks. A 2,400-acre green tree public duck hunting area is available on project lands and 3,800 acres are managed for propagation of bobwhite quail and upland game. Those who enjoy sports are not alone in appreciating Nimrod. There are seven parks nestled along the lake where a family or individual can picnic, camp or just relax amid the groves of

tall, sweet-scented pines. The parks are equipped with tent and trailer spaces, tables, grills, fire rings, playgrounds, fish cleaning stations, boat launch ramps, trash cans, municipal water, electricity and showers. Nimrod is conveniently located adjacent to State Highway 7, which is a National Scenic Byway. The most popular of the trails in the area is the Bona Dea Trails in Russellville, with an estimated 172,100 visits to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers project in 2000. The facility is for day use only, with hiking and interpretive trails located near Lake Dardanelle, with the two being separated by Lake Front Drive. The Meadowbrook self-guided trail is located inside Lake Dardanelle State Park. The three-quarter mile trail is considered easy with regard to hiking difficulty, with 30 minutes being the estimated time for completion. The trail begins and ends at the parks amphitheater and provides a theme of change, illustrated by the succession of plants, man’s influence on the environment and the variety of flowers, plants and trees in the Arkansas River Valley. The Bench Trail is considered the easier of two trails at Mount Nebo State Park. Beginning at the overlook shelter seen during the drive up the mountain, the trail gets its name from a narrow shelf called a bench that encircles the entire mountain. The four-mile trail through a woodland teeming with large trees and wildlife is level in most places and displays excellent mountain scenery, especially during the fall. The Summit Park Trail is a one-mile trail on Mount Nebo and is considered moderate to strenuous in difficulty. The loop trail, named for the Summit Park Hotel built near the trailhead in 1889, begins at a point on the northwest side of the top of the mountain and meanders down to Fern Lake along a similar path that was first used by the guests of the famous hotel. Civilian Conservation Corps improved the trail with beautiful work in the 1930s. The Arkansas River Valley is brimming with various sites for those wanting to spend a warm spring or summer night outdoors, whether it be on the higher elevation of Mount Nebo or near the waters of Lake Dardanelle and its tributaries, the Arkansas River or Lake Nimrod. Mount Nebo is located west of Dardanelle and towers 1,350 feet above the Arkansas River Valley. A portion of the mountain was chosen as a park site in 1933, and logs and stones from the mountain were used by the Civilian Conservation Corps to construct many of the parks bridges, trails, rustic-style cabins and pavilions. There are 24 campsites (Class B, 10 hike-in) on Mount Nebo, along with 14 fully-equipped cabins with kitchens. Also included on the mountain are a pool, tennis courts, picnic areas, a playground, extra-large enclosed and standard open pavilions and a ball field. Lake Dardanelle State Park provides campsites in Russellville and Dardanelle. The Russellville Area, the main park campground, provides 65 Class A campsites – which includes dual-voltage hookups, freeze-proof water connections and modern bathhouses and a table

and/or grill at each site and is open throughout the year. The Dardanelle Area has 18 campsites and is open year round. to do: go the extra mile

RussVegas Half Marathon By Sean Ingram

n 2014, the first RussVegas Half marathon attracted over 1,000 runners and a community that proved it could do more than host a 13.1-mile race. The 2015 race, which benefited Arkansas Children’s Hospital and the River Valley Circle of Friends, showed off downtown Russellville as 1,500 racers made their way through the city course. The 2015 RussVegas Half featured spirit stations and invited people from their neighborhoods to come out and support the runners. The race included a festival that featured a kids mile, 5K glow run, car show, expo, food and live entertainment. The half marathon course featured five local bands and 24 spirit stations, made up of volunteers, residents, local businesses and organizations who wanted to show runners their support. Chris Olson said he wanted people to come

Since 1929 out of their neighborhoods and watch the race with their cups of coffee. “We have 600 people signed up from outside the Arkansas River Valley, and over 100 are from outside Arkansas,” Olson said. “The more we can get out and support the race, the more it will grow. That’s more tax dollars for our community.” 2015 was also the first year the half marathon supported Arkansas Children’s Hospital (ACH) through the Angels program, which gave participants the opportunity to qualify for free entry to the half marathon and raise a minimum of $300 to benefit ACH. Raising $300 also meant racers will get a technical race shirt to identify them as an ACH Angel. The more money raised through their personal webpage, the more prizes were available. Those interested can also keep up with RussVegas Half events on Facebook.

Russellville’s Advertising and Promotions (A&P) Commission helped facilitate more than $350,000 in 2014 through the city’s 11⁄2 percent hotel and motel sales tax. The funds generated through the sales tax are used to advertise and promote city events, which are facilitated through mini and community grants. A mini grant is a tourism-event grant, while a community grant is for a community event. The A&P Commission was created to facilitate Ordinance No. 1692, which created a 11⁄2 percent sales tax upon the gross receipts of hotels and motels in the city of Russellville. The commission ensures tax revenue is used for advertising and promotion of Russellville and is formed by members of the local tourism industry and city residents. Christie Graham is the director of the A&P Commission. Other members include Tyler Riley, Al Brown, Shawn Gordon, Sarah Keating and Dusti Yarber. Freddie Harris and Robert Wiley are the city liaisons to the commission. For more information, visit www.discoverrussellville.org.
