pring is finally here! We at RVL Magazine dread the impending “dog days” of summer, but these sweet days of March and April are certainly nice while they last. In this issue — our first of 2011 — we start the season off right with a look at a local community group that is helping those without resources otherwise to do so to plant gardens of their own. Also in this issue, we feature Royal Family Kids’ Camp, a place for kids navigating the foster care system to gain acceptance, support and, more importantly, a good time. We also talk to a local in the know about a timeless fashion question: Do these jeans make my butt look big? If even our expert can’t help you with the answer to that question, consider a group of women runners featured on page 24. And if all that talk of exercise makes you hungry, flip back to this month’s recipe feature, wherein Stoby’s Restaurant — a go-to staple for a great summer sandwich in Russellville and Conway for years — shows us how to make a few of their favorites.

One of the most exciting features in this edition of RVL Magazine, though, is the special RVL Weddings insert that begins on page 27 with a cover that features Emery and Emily Gower of Dardanelle, a young couple who married in advance of the groom’s deployment with the Arkansas Army National Guard. One local church offers a garden for all

nce upon a time, sustenance gardening was ubiquitous. Then, one day, it wasn’t, as urbanization took hold in once rural, agrarian areas, transforming the ability to grow one’s own food from a right to a privilege. A local group, however, is rejecting that notion by offering a community garden, complete with individual plots, to anyone willing to cultivate it. Suzanne Hodges, an organizer of the community garden at All Saints Episcopal Church in Russellville, said this is the second year for the project — but “project” isn’t the word she uses. “I’m seeing it as a ministry,” Hodges explained. The inspiration for the garden sprang from the book “Edible Schoolyard” by Alice Waters, an author Hodges met during a trip to Washington, D.C. Waters, who owns restaurant Chez Panisse, is a known advocate for locally-produced foods. After the trip, Hodges was a believer as well. “I came home thinking, ‘We’ve got to have a garden,’” Hodges said. Today, the garden Hodges envisioned is located on a sunny space of land near the church, providing not only soil to foster the gardens, but a place for exercise and fraternity. Hodges splits oversight responsibilities with another woman, Carolyn McLellan. Those wishing to rent a square from the church must sign an agreement certifying they will use only natural pesticides and fertilizers on the land. They agree also to model sustainability by using earth-friendly methods to enrich soil and deal with pests. The cost is $10 for each plot, to help cover garden expenses, and the person borrowing the plot must provide his or her own garden tools. In Hodges’ estimation, the cost is well worth it, both in terms of dollars saved at the produce counter and in terms of the health benefits she believes can be derived from eating homegrown foods, no matter the month. “One of the advantages of Arkansas is that you can plant almost year-round,” Hodges summarized. A knowledgeable clerk can save shoppers hours in the changing room, according to Williams, helping steer those who seek a higher waist away from juniors styles, and those who want a lower rise away from misses jeans, which cause the infamous “saggy crotch” when worn too low on the hips. If you must shop without the help of someone in the know, however, there are a few ways to ensure a good fit, Williams said, including: • Know your body. Those with curves should avoid so-called skinny jeans, which emphasize wider hips, and stick to a balancing boot cut. • Assess your backside. Want to minimize your assets? Avoid jeans with a small back pocket, as large, wide swaths of unpocketed denim tend to make most women’s bottoms look bigger. For those who want to maximize curves, go for a jean with a flap on the back pocket, which will add the appearance of fullness. • Select the shade. Today, the starfish is the symbol for the Royal Family Kids’ Camps, an outreach aimed at ministering to children in foster care who have suffered abuse, neglect or abandonment. Debbie Young, children’s pastor at Pottsville Assembly of God and a local organizer of the camp, said it, like the boy, cannot help everyone — but everyone can help someone. It’s a principle that underlies the camp’s entire mission. The vision began in 1997, when Young’s family started a new ministry for children, King’s Kids Ministry. Young and her husband, Glen Young, built a purple castle and organized kidcentric puppet shows to teach children about God’s love. “It felt like we were called to tell kids beaten down by life that they were royalty in God’s Kingdom,” Young said. Then, in 2001, Young went to a children’s workers conference in Springfield. While at the conference, she saw a booth for Royal Family Kids’ Camps, a national group of camps that originated in California.

It was purple, and espoused many of the same ideas as King’s Kids. Young took a brochure and went to a Royal Family workshop that afternoon. While there, she felt something move in her soul, she remembered during an interview earlier this month. “I felt God speak to my heart and say, ‘This is what I want you to do,’” Young said. Back in Pottsville, Young told others of her revelation, and the wheels for a new ministry were in motion as the Youngs and Glenda Jay, another member of the church, went to a week-long training in North Carolina.

--The first local camp took place in 2004, and the tradition has since continued on an annual basis, with Pottsville Assembly of God acting as host church, and others in the community as sponsors. This year, Young and a group of volunteers who represent a diverse group of churches, denominations and faiths — including, in 2009, representatives from 17 or more congregations — will host 32 children, referred to them by the state Department of Human Service’s Division of Children and Family Services. Russellville’s First Assembly of God will transport the children to the camp; the location, for security reasons, is not disclosed to the outside public. The camp lasts for a full five days, and it costs about $500 for each child to attend. See HEARTS on page 18

That money, from churches, businesses, clubs and individuals, pays for faith-based, nondenominational instruction and — most importantly — fun, from hiking and fishing to swimming and even a rodeo. On the second day of camp, beauticians from Tina’s Cutting Edge in Atkins visit to spend the day pampering the girls, curling hair and polishing nails. Then, that afternoon, they dress up for an elegant tea party. Meanwhile, the boys attend a Razorbacks-themed afternoon of tailgating. The camp also includes a unique event called “Everybody’s Birthday Party.” The idea is simple: Children attending Royal Family Kids’ Camp may not receive as much special attention on holidays and birthdays as many of their contemporaries, so the camp tries to mitigate that lack. Local churches provide gifts, and each child is celebrated. One of Young’s favorite features of the camp, however, is the bank of mailboxes where each child receives “heart notes” from volunteers and other members of the community designed to remind the child in a tangible way that he or she is loved. Pulling it all together is a lot of work. In 2009, Young said, volunteers spent 9,800 hours on the camp and its ancillaries. But Young says all the effort is well worth it. “We see miracles happen constantly,” she explained. But the best part? Once it’s finished, they get to start all over again, for there is always a next year; always another starfish to save. Donations may be sent to Royal Family Kids’ Camp, P.O. Local clinic helps women get active By Whitney Snipes

omen can run. That’s the motto — and the name — of a walking club for women that is experiencing a renaissance in Russellville. Program directors Amy Smith, a running coach at Sigma Human Performance, and Kim Head, founder of Fit Girlz wellness group, have teamed up to give new life to a group that died out in the Russellville area several years ago. “The program was designed to get people who have never run before interested in running,” Head said, adding, “It’s really a neat environment for women who’ve always thought about running, but have never had the guts to do it or never knew what they needed to do to start with other beginners.”

The local group is a sub-set of Women Run Arkansas, a statewide program formed in 2000, and its mission as stated on the organization’s website is “to address the special needs of women’s fitness, while promoting health and fitness through running and walking.” The Women Run Arkansas program consists of more than 40 groups around the state. Each group will meet twice weekly over the same 10week period beginning in March and culminating on May 7 in Conway as all the groups gather for a 5k run/ walk.

The night prior to the run, there is a “pasta party” where all the women from teams all over the state gather and listen to a guest speaker. Head said last year, she went to the event after working through the program with a group of friends. “We went to the pasta party, we saw the atmosphere and it was so cool,” she said. “I looked around when they had the leaders stand up — there were ladies of all ages, shapes and sizes, and I looked at my friend and said ‘We can do this. We need to have this in Russellville.’” See RUN on page 26

- RUN continued from page 25 Head said Russellville had a local clinic several years ago, but it died out when the director of the program had to step down due to medical reasons. This year, Head and Smith have decided to get the program going again and re-launch Women Can Run, which will cater to all levels of walkers and runners, from beginners to advanced. They say they complement each other well and make a great team.

“I tell people Amy came out of the womb running,” Head said. “To me, she’s like the expert, and I really identify with the plight of the woman who was at the point in life had no physical fitness.” Four years ago, Head said she weighed 170 pounds more than she does today. She said she made the decision several years ago to get active and has never looked back. That experience, she said, has allowed her to connect with women who have the mentality of “I can’t do this” when it comes to getting active. “That’s what this is about, is accomplishment,” Smith said.

A 2011 love story

Emery and Emily Gower make it official ahead of groom’s deployment

mery and Emily Gower of Dardanelle began dating when he was in 10th grade. The future bride was in ninth. But it wasn’t until then that they realized their history actually stretched back farther — they had been attending the same church camp in Siloam Springs for years and actually played on the same sports team the year before they started dating. Though they didn’t interact much at the camp, during her ninth-grade year Emily got to know Emery better — and discovered she enjoyed spending time with him. “He was really funny,” Emily said. “I was shy, but I wasn’t as shy around him.” After about four years of dating, Emery and Emily were married Jan. 8 at Dardanelle First Baptist Church in front of a crowd of family and friends. Emily said her favorite part of the ceremony was when the couple filled a unity sand vase in place of a unity candle. “I thought it was fun,” Emily said. “We laughed and talked a lot when we were up there together. I think we entertained people.” The couple didn’t have time for a trip for their honeymoon because Emery, who is in the Arkansas Army National Guard and will be deployed in April, had to get back quickly for training. Emery is still training now, but Emily said they are able to talk on the phone quite often.

Emily said the way Emery proposed might seem silly to others, but she will always remember how it defused an otherwise sad time. “He found out he was going to be deployed, and we had been talking about getting married anyway,” Emily said. “He said ‘You’re still going to marry me, right?’ and I said ‘Duh!’ “It made it a funny moment even though it was sad finding out he would be deployed.” — Adam Sweeney

of choices when they shop for you. Be sure to refresh your list regularly as gifts get purchased. • Register now, because you won’t buy it later: You may think you will ... but you won’t. Your friends and family might even get together to purchase a higher priced “group gift.” • Dream big: Register for gifts in a range of prices and categories. This will give guests and group givers lots of options to choose from. • Remember the “Rule of Three”: When it comes to setting your table, if you choose bold patterns for your china and flatware, pick a more simple style of glassware. Prefer intricate stemware? Pair it with simpler patterns of china and flatware. So, it’s bold/bold/simple or simple/ simple/bold. • Visit a store: It’s in your best interest to visit a store and schedule an appointment with an expert consultant who can help you with your gift selections and share great tips like “The Rule of Three,” what cookware you will need to prepare your favorite dish, what knife to use when and much more.
