Saint Mary’s Regional Medical Center Recognized for safe, quality patient care by national and state organizations

The year 2014 was marked with accolades and honors for Saint Mary’s Regional Medical Center. Over the past 12 months, the Russellvillebased acute care facility was recognized as a leader among Arkansas and U.S. hospitals — regardless of size or prominence — in the areas of safety, quality care and improved performance. Saint Mary’s was honored with four key distinctions and awards that reflect the hospital’s drive to providing exceptional, technologically advanced care to every patient. “Saint Mary’s is proud to be recognized among the safest hospitals in Arkansas and the nation,” said Mike McCoy, Saint Mary’s Interim Chief Executive Officer. “These awards were achieved through ongoing process improvement and a strong culture of teamwork and caring. There is no doubt that our team of dedicated health care professionals is committed to improving patient outcomes and it is this commitment that makes Saint Mary’s the patients’ choice for health care in our region. I am extremely proud of our employees and our medical staff for their dedication and commitment to providing the best care for our patients. This recognition is because of their hard work and dedication and they are to be congratulated. Our patients and their families can be assured they will receive the highest standard of safe, quality care at Saint Mary’s, delivered with courtesy and compassion.”

Saint Mary’s Regional Medical Center recognized for Outstanding Record in Patient Safety – Awarded an “A”in Fall 2014 Hospital Safety Score Saint Mary’s Regional Medical Center was honored with an ‘A’ grade in the Fall 2014 Hospital Safety Score, which rates how well hospitals protect patients from errors, injuries and infections. The hospital is one of only two hospitals in the state to be recognized with an ‘A’ during this measurement period and has received the award every year since 2012. The Hospital Safety Score is compiled under the guidance of the nation’s leading experts on patient safety and is administered by The Leapfrog Group (Leapfrog), an independent industry watchdog. The first and only hospital safety rating to be peer-reviewed in the Journal of Patient Safety, the Score is free to the public and designed to give consumers information they can use to protect themselves and their families when facing a hospital stay. Tim Copeland, Chief Quality Officer, said “We are very pleased that our ongoing efforts in the area of patient safety have again earned our hospital an ‘A’ ranking. Physicians, nurses, pharmacists, engineering, environmental services… it takes an entire team, aligned and focused on delivering the highest quality care to every patient, every time. We are proud of the quality care we provide and honored to receive this well-earned, national recognition from The Leapfrog Group because of the high standards they uphold.” Saint Mary’s Chief Nursing Officer Pat Torrico explained, “We are proud of the exceptional care we provide our patients. Our nurses and clinicians follow evidence-based,

best practices and strive to deliver safe, compassionate care to every patient. This honor means a great deal to our staff and the patients we serve. We are very happy to be recognized for our high performance.” Developed under the guidance of Leapfrog’s Blue Ribbon Expert Panel, the Hospital Safety Score uses 28 measures of publicly available hospital safety data to produce a single “A,” “B,” “C,” “D” or “F” score representing a hospital’s overall capacity to keep patients safe from preventable harm. More than 2,500 U.S. general hospitals were assigned scores in fall 2014, with about 31 percent receiving an “A” grade. The Hospital Safety Score is fully transparent, with a full analysis of the data and methodology used in determining grades available online. “Patient safety needs to be a 24 -7 priority for hospitals, as errors and infections are all too common and often deadly,” said Leah Binder, president and CEO of The Leapfrog Group, which administers the Hospital Safety Score. “We commend the ‘A’ hospitals, including Saint Mary’s Regional Medical Center for helping us to raise the standards of health care nationwide, and demonstrating that they’ve made the well-being of patients a top priority.”

Saint Mary’s Regional Medical Center earns ‘Top Performer on Key Quality Measures®’ recognition from The Joint Commission Saint Mary’s Regional Medical Center has been recognized as a Top Performer on Key Quality Measures® by The Joint Commission, the leading accreditor of health care organizations in the United States. Saint Mary’s was recognized as part of The Joint Commission’s 2014 annual report “America’s Hospitals: Improving Quality and Safety,” for attaining and sustaining excellence in accountability measure performance for: • Heart Attack • Pneumonia • Surgical Care Saint Mary’s is one of 1,224 hospitals in the United States to achieve the Top Performer distinction. The Top Performer program recognizes hospitals for improving performance

on evidence-based interventions that increase the chances of healthy outcomes for patients with certain conditions, including heart attack, heart failure, pneumonia, surgical care, children’s asthma, stroke, venous thromboembolism and perinatal care, as well as for inpatient psychiatric services and immunizations. Top Performer hospitals had to meet three performance criteria based on accountability measure data, including: Achieving cumulative performance of 95 percent or above across all reported accountability measures; Achieving performance of 95 percent or above on each and every reported accountability measure where there were at least 30 denominator cases; and Having at least one core measure set that had a composite rate of 95 percent or above, and (within that measure set) all applicable individual accountability measures had a performance rate of 95 percent or above. “Delivering the right treatment in the right way at the right time is a cornerstone of high-quality health care. I commend the efforts of Saint Mary’s for their excellent performance on the use of evidence-based interventions,” said Mark R. Chassin, M.D., FACP, M.P.P., M.P.H., president and CEO, The Joint Commission. “We understand what matters most to patients at Saint Mary’s is the quality and safety of the care they receive. That is why we have made it a top priority to improve positive patient outcomes through evidencebased care processes,” said Mike McCoy, Saint Mary’s Interim CEO. “It is truly an honor to be named a Top Performer as it recognizes the knowledge, teamwork and dedication of our entire hospital staff.”

Saint Mary’s Regional Medical Center wins Quality Award; Arkansas Foundation for Medical Care recognizes Excellence in Health Care Saint Mary’s has earned a Hospital CAUTI Reduction Award in the Arkansas Foundation for Medical Care’s (AFMC) annual Quality Awards program. The Quality Awards recognize improvement in indi-

vidual health care organizations’ performance in AFMC’s quality improvement projects. The Hospital CAUTI Reduction Award recognizes hospitals that have committed to focus efforts in the reduction of catheter-associated urinary tract infections (CAUTI). At the statewide meeting in July, Saint Mary’s Chief Quality Officer Tim Copeland and Infection Control Nurse, Monica Baxter, RN, were asked to present a case study regarding how Saint Mary’s reduced urinary tract infections and how the hospital sustained that improvement. For over 40 years, through utilization review, quality improvement projects and public education, the Arkansas Foundation for Medical Care has worked to improve the health of Arkansans. AFMC congratulates Saint Mary’s on its commitment to high-quality health care for the citizens of Arkansas.

Saint Mary’s Regional Medical Center recognized for work in statewide HEN collaborative to Improving Care to Save Lives Saint Mary’s Regional Medical Center has been a participating member of the Hospital Engagement Network (HEN) through the Arkansas Hospital Association. As one of 45 hospitals who have participated over the past 3 years in the AHA/HRET HEN to reduce hospital acquired conditions by 40 percent and readmissions by 20 percent, Saint Mary’s has contributed to an estimated reduction of 2,144 events and a savings of $10,887,934 across the state through this HEN. The Health Engagement Network initiative is focused on: • Reducing hospital acquired Adverse Drug Events • Central Line Associated Blood Stream Infections • Catheter Associated Urinary Tract Infections • Falls • Early Elective Deliveries • Obstetric Harm • Pressure Ulcers • Readmissions • Venous Thromboembolism (Blood Clots) • Ventilator Associated Conditions • Surgical Site Infections

Saint Mary’s is one of 28 Hospitals recognized for meeting the goals set by CMS in 80 percent of the topics which impacts its patients. “This demonstrates Saint Mary’s full commitment to quality care and to providing the safest environment for our patients to receive that care,” said Mike McCoy, Saint Mary’s Interim CEO. The AHA/HRET HEN is one of 26 HENs as part of the Partnership for Patients created under the Affordable Care Act. As part of this work, Saint Mary’s Regional Medical Center, as well as approximately 3700 hospitals across the country has been exposed to a wealth of knowledge, resources and tools. It has created a nationwide infrastructure for health care improvement and for achieving the national goals of Better Health, Improved Healthcare and Lower Costs. “Arkansas hospitals have embraced this work and have shown the importance of providing high quality, safe care. We could not have seen these great results without the commitment of those hospitals who care for patients in their communities,” commented Bo Ryall, President of the Arkansas Hospital Association. Saint Mary’s is also one of only six hospitals in the state and one of 233 hospitals in the nation to meet the national improvement goals and meet reduction goals on 90 percent or more of their applicable topics on national or state aligned measures.

Alpha Counter Tops has been doing countertops in the area since 2006. We do commercial and residential work, new homes and remodels. We offer several types of surfaces but have found that many customers aren’t aware of the differences or benefits of different stones. Here is some basic information on some of the surfaces we offer. GRANITE — Granite is a natural stone quarried from mountains. Granite comes from Brazil, Italy or Spain. Granite is a natural God-made product with each stone having unique characteristics and beautiful patterns only nature can produce. With Granite, it must be sealed. There may be seams in a granite countertop, depending on length. QUARTZ/Engineered stone — (Such as Silestone, Caesarstone, LG Viatera, Hanstone, Etc) is a man-made stone. Quartz/Engineered stone is a very hard surface and is heat, scratch, and stain resistant. It is becoming very popular and will

A Quartz countertop may have seams, depending on length. SOLID SURFACE — (Corian, HiMacs) is an acrylic surface. It is seamless and never has to be sealed. The sink can also be integrated with no seams. Because it is acrylic, it can be scratched and isn’t heat resistant. Generally, the scratches can be buffed out. SOAPSTONE — Soapstone is a natural stone that has a more rustic or

dull finish. It is very durable and doesn’t have to be sealed. Soapstone has a light grey appearance and is to be oiled with mineral oil, thus darkening it more each time oil is applied. Soapstone may get light scratches over time but these can generally be removed with light sanding. MARBLE — Marble is classically beautiful with a soft flowing pattern. It is very porous and can scratch. It can be used in kitchens, but is recommended more as a bathroom surface. Marble must be sealed. Alpha also offers recycled glass countertops, back splash tile, and we are one of the only suppliers in the state for Porcelanosa tile. We have a warehouse displaying full slabs of Granite in over 30 colors. We also have a remnant area for those looking to remodel a bathroom or a small counter top, we offer sales on many popular Quartz colors. Pamela A. Magness, a Russellville-based certified public accountant, opened business in 2008 and is now starting her sixth tax season. She has 23 years of corporate and public accounting experience. Magness specializes in tax services and preparation for individuals and small businesses. Her office, located at 904 W. Main St. in Russellville, also offers new business consulting, contractor license, quick books services, payroll preparation and tax reporting, and bookkeeping services. Some advantages to using her business include personalized service and attention, a big benefit to using a small business. Magness offers some advice for people preparing to mail in their taxes to the Internal Revenue Service. “Get organized, she said. “Make sure you have everything there, in one spot, together. She stressed the importance of realizing what can be deducted and warned filers not to let a looming deadline deter them from gathering receipts or documents that could add to their refunds. Magness said one of the areas creating the most confusion this year is the law requiring insurance coverage, Affordable Health Care Act, and how it will impact an individual’s tax situation. She recommends using a trusted tax professional since there are exceptions and an individual’s options will vary. Magness said another common misconception is people who get an extension believing that owed taxes aren’t due on tax day. “People think if you have an extension, that means you have more time to pay, she said. “Not so. Serving Families since 1944 In 1944, F. C. Peters and W. A. Baldwin opened a new furniture, hardware, and appliance business in downtown Russellville as Peters-Baldwin Company. In the mid-1950s, Peters bought out Baldwin, and the name changed to F.C. Peters & Sons. F.C.’s sons, Bill and Flave Peters were the “Sons referred to in the name. When F.C. retired in the early 1970s, brothers Bill and Flave Peters purchased the firm from their father. In 1991, the hardware department was phased out to expand the furniture and appliance departments and the name was changed to Peters Family Living. Flave Peters retired in 2001 and Bill, who has worked in the store since he was a young boy, now runs the business with the same Customer Focus that his dad taught him and his brother. While other businesses have come and gone, Peters Family Living continues to thrive using a business model that works. The backbone of this business model is the continued focus on providing the Highest Level of Service Possible from the Initial Sales Process, through Financing, Delivery, and Post-Sale Service. Other elements of their business model include providing the Best Value in Home Furnishings, Appliances and Mattresses in the River Valley. Arvest keeps local community as its foundation

Regarded as one of Arkansas’ most established and successful financial institutions, Arvest keeps its community foundation while offering customers the convenience and technological advantages of a larger bank and keeping stability, sound financial practices and customer service at the heart of its mission. Arvest entered the Russellville market in 1982 with the opening of the 819 S. Arkansas Ave. location. The next branch to open was 121 N. Elmira in early 1997, followed by 3005 W. Main Place in 2006. In March of 2013, the fourth Russellville location welcomed customers in the heart of Downtown Russellville at 209 W. Main St. Arvest associates are often found in civic and community leadership roles throughout the River Valley. They can be found participating in community planning, supporting community organizations by volunteering for projects or providing monetary donations. “The backbone of Arvest’s growth and success in the River Valley

Saint Mary’s is the first hospital in the region to use the powerful new GE Optima CT660 128-Slice Computed Tomography (CT) scanner. This state-of-the-art technology can scan the entire body in mere seconds – far faster than a conventional CT scanner. For patients requiring cardiac, brain or peripheral vascular examinations, the 128-slice CT provides increased speed, reduced radiation dosage, detailed diagnostic information, and greater convenience. It also helps maximize patient comfort.

Revolutionary care means incredibly sharp MRI images. Saint Mary’s once again leads the way with the newest MRI technology featuring innovative software technologies that provide uncompromised image quality with an expansive 50cm field of view. This technology’s bore diameter and field of view make MRI scans accessible to larger patients who need them. The GE Optima MR450w scanner also continues our emphasis on patient comfort. Cutting-edge technologies and wide-bore design allow the patient to experience less anxiety and motion.

In our commitment to providing quality care for the Arkansas River Valley, Saint Mary’s is at the forefront of bringing advanced, revolutionary technology to the region.

Valley Piano People from all over the Arkansas River Valley come to Russellville to shop at Valley Piano. Having a full-service piano store in our community is a very unique distinction that usually only the larger metropolitan areas can offer. For 40 years, Valley Piano has been a father and son business started by Al Chenowith and now being operated by son Brian. Valley Piano’s main goal is to make everyone a very important customer. Whether it’s a $5 set of guitar strings or a $15,000 grand piano, you deal with store owners the moment you walk in the door. Valley Piano sells new and used pianos. It has a selection of vertical and grand piano styles. Chenowith is a member of the Piano Technicians Guild (PTG), and all pianos are set up and serviced to PTG standards.

Piano Tuning and moving services are offered for hire. A large selection of lesson books and sheet music is kept in stock. There is a myth that shopping small and local means less selection and higher prices. Valley Piano works hard to have competitive pricing and selection plus provide advantages over dealers in another city or online. Valley Piano is convenient with a showroom where instruments may be tested before purchase. In addition, Valley Piano provides fast product support and service on instruments they sell. “I’ve even run into customers while out eating or shopping around town and either set up a service appointment or offered product support on the spot, Brian said. “I think it’s an added value not having to call an 800 number five or six times and waiting several

months to get a problem solved. Valley Piano also sells digital pianos and keyboards. The selection ranges from inexpensive home models to high end, professional-grade models for performers. Recording equipment and computer interfaces are stocked for the home studio market. The company is proud to offer a selection of guitars and accessories not widely available from mainstream retailers. Guitars, amps, pedals, pickups and strings are just a few of the items available. Valley Piano does service work also, including string changes, basic guitar setup and pickup installs. Please stop by for a visit to see what Valley Piano can do to meet your musical instrument needs. After hours, you can browse our store online at valleypiano.com.

Indirect Benefits to Pope County The Pope County Library System’s four libraries provide both direct and indirect benefits to the community. Indirect benefits include: the use of libraries help to create a literate population; offer a gathering place, are for everyone at every stage of their life, and level the playing field by providing equal access to information regardless of intellect or income. Direct Benefits to Pope County Direct benefits include services received by library users from the use of books, music, films, reference material, and electronic databases, as well as the estimated value received when librarians answered reference questions. County Employer The PCLS employs 43 individuals in its 4 libraries in positions as librarians, and clerks, in full-time, and part-time roles. 98% of the employees live in Pope County. This means that employees are spending a significant proportion of their salary locally, supporting Pope County’s economy. Not only are the wages, operating and capital expenditures infused into the local economy but they also have a ripple effect as the dollars are re-spent. Personal services makes up 71% or $951,322.46 of the County Library Fund’s $1.3 million operating budget. Book purchases made up 10% and had a return of $7.429 million dollars in 2014. 14% of the fund is used for Maintenance & Operations of the libraries. During 2014, 26 volunteers donated 2,318 hours saving the system $51,320.52. Patrons used the libraries 29 computers: and 90,002 reference and informational questions were answered. 148,252 patrons physically visited, and there were 88,174 virtual visits to the libraries as the economy continued to recover. The system’s 29,940 patrons circulated the libraries 117,052 volumes 297,186 times. The collection “turned over” 2.54 times. At an average cost of $25 per book, Citizens of Pope County saved $7,429 million dollars in book purchases alone. Programming increased 70% in 2012, and in 2013 and 2014 programming increased another 10% each year. Number of full-text articles downloaded from PCLS’s 28 databases that are provided by the Arkansas State Library (ASL) are not available statistically. But, it would cost $100,000 to replace the databases being provided by the ASL. Type of Service Item Circulation Interlibrary Loan Circulation/ Lent and Borrowed Reference Questions Total

Cost-Benefit Analysis of Services Since the libraries are funded by both state aid and local tax dollars, a comparison of dollar value of services provided during 2014 with the tax dollars used to generate those services yields a valuation of library services. In 2014, the Pope County libraries received $876,858.34 in Millage collected from property taxes, $100,731 in State Sales Tax, and $120,725 in State Aid. Although this is not a comprehensive valuation of library services, in essence, $1,098,314 generated $8,735,461 in library services. These figures do not include full-text articles downloaded by patrons on site or at home, or the 59 rentals of the Meeting Room at the Heritage Hall. Maus Implement Company Inc. started in Atkins with the JM Maus General Mercantile Store. In 1944 JB Maus signed the 1st contract with John Deere. After being in the same location for 45 years, the family decided it was time to build a new modern facility. In 1996 the new facility was completed in Morrilton. Both of JB’s sons started in the family business at age 14, working in the service department. JB passed away in 2004 leaving the dealership to his sons Johnny (John B. Maus III) and Jeff Maus. Le Le’s Designs offers a variety of floral arrangements Jo Ann and Gary Foster opened Le Le’s Designs on Dec. 12, 2014. The Mississippi natives moved to Russellville in 2008 to relocate Gary’s salesman position within the poultry industry. Jo Ann is a retired junior high English teacher. This past summer, Jo Ann and Gary decided to return to the florist business. Jo Ann’s aunt Leila Langley and her husband, Frank, opened Langley’s Florist in 1945 in Magee, Miss., where they were successful for many years. After Frank’s death, Leila offered the florist shop to Jo Ann and Gary. From 1976-82, Jo Ann and Gary owned Langley’s Florist. They both watched and learned designing from Le Le, as Leila was known to her nieces and nephews. She

was a great designer and teacher to them both. Jo Ann and Gary have come full circle back to what they loved to do in their younger days. Out of this, Le Le’s Designs was established. Le Le’s Designs specializes in one-of-a-kind arrangements and designs. Unique vases, container and flowers, whether it’s fresh or silk, are always arranged to perfection. Gary and Jo Ann look for unusual gift ideas and vases for the shop. Enjoying designing for any occasion is why Jo Ann and Gary are in the florist business. They enjoy the fulfillment it brings. Combined, the licensed funeral directors on staff have more than 100 years of experience in their time at Lemley alone. “When people serve together for decades, that shows they are proud of what they are doing for the community … that they take pride in their work,” Chris Lemley said. Saint Mary’s Regional Medical Center Superior technology enhances quality care

Saint Mary’s Regional Medical Center is a full-service acute care, regional referral center for the River Valley region and beyond. Founded in 1926, it has been the area’s health care leader for nearly 90 years. Saint Mary’s is accredited by the Joint Commission and owned by Capella Healthcare, Inc. The hospital is licensed as a 170bed acute care facility. Saint Mary’s provides patients with some of the most advanced technology and medical services available, many of which are usually found only in larger, metropolitan hospitals. Saint Mary’s has a medical staff of more than 100 active physicians representing more than 18 medical specialties. Key services include: 24-hour physicianstaffed emergency department Cardiac catheterization and echocardiogram services Cardiac and diagnostic nuclear medicine 128-slice CT and CT angiography Cardiopulmonary and respiratory services Medical and radiation oncology Diagnostic and vascular ultrasound Digital mammography services MRI Hyperbaric oxygen therapy and wound care management services Inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation services Intensive care unit Laboratory services Inpatient and outpatient surgery Orthopedics services Adult behavioral health Sleep study lab Women’s and Children’s services Venous ablation services Urology Saint Mary’s Regional Medical Center has significantly enhanced the healthcare technology available to the River Valley, and remains committed to investing

tion, doctors can closely watch their patients who are in labor and can be in a position to react immediately to a change in situation. That will contribute to improved patient care.”

Additional equipment in superior systems, ensuring long-term access to quality care for the patients we serve.

The region’s first 128-Slice CT Scanner At a cost of $1.2 million, Saint Mary’s is the first hospital in the region to offer and fully utilize the powerful, new GE Optima CT660 128-Slice Computed Tomography (CT) scanner, revolutionizing non-invasive procedures including coronary angiography. The highspeed scanner provides physicians with the ability to see more anatomical detail at a lower radiation dose, in a fraction of the time previously required with conventional CT. The machine can scan the whole body in seconds and provide incredibly sharp 3D images of any organ. This technology has been particularly effective for studying the beating heart. CT angiography utilizing the 128-slice Optima CT provides clear non-invasive images of the heart and its major vessels. The scans can help determine whether either fatty deposits or calcium deposits have built up in the coronary arteries, which supply blood to the heart muscle. Also, the scans can be timed to use only images gathered between contractions, so that the heart and its vessels can be seen without blurring caused by motion. For patients requiring a CT examination, and in particular for those requiring cardiac, brain or peripheral vascular examination, the 128–slice Optima CT660 scanner

provides increased speed, reduced radiation dosage, detailed diagnostic information, greater convenience and improved patient comfort. “This new technology will give us more versatility in our imaging protocols,” said interventional cardiologist Dr. Ahmed Athar, board certified in cardiovascular CT. “Rather than a onescan-fits-all approach, we tailor each exam to meet the patient’s specific needs.”

The latest in MRI Technology Patient expectations of MRI have shifted in recent years to an enhanced and more comfortable scanning experience. As part of its mission to exceed expectations, Saint Mary’s recently made the GE Optima MR450w, a powerful MRI system, available to patients in the region. This technology offers increased comfort paired with exceptionally sharp, highresolution images. “This is the most accurate MRI imaging tool in the region. This system offers excellent images for more definitive diagnosis and meets the patient demand for a more comfortable experience,” said Imaging Director Ken Dilday. The GE Optima MR450w, a $1.6 million investment, shares the spotlight with several advanced technologies at Saint Mary’s.

New Nuclear Medicine Technology Additionally, Saint Mary’s has installed two

GE Discovery NM360 nuclear medicine imaging cameras. Valued at nearly$385,000, the cameras and re-designed facility place the hospital among the leaders in nuclear medicine imaging technology statewide. Nuclear medicine cameras provide very precise images of the area of the body being imaged. The more precise the information healthcare providers can obtain about a patient’s condition, the more effectively that patient can be treated. With improved efficiency and speed, these cameras allow for scan times and doses as low as half that of standard nuclear medicine protocols.

Cardiac and Vascular Care Center – Leadership, Physicians and Technology Investing nearly $3 million in life-saving cardiac and limb-saving catheterization technologies, Saint Mary’s completed capital improvements in two state-of-the-art Cardiac Catheterization Labs for diagnostic and interventional cardiovascular and vascular procedures. Saint Mary’s has assembled a dedicated team of cardiac specialists devoted to providing outstanding cardiac care, right here at home. These highly-trained, boardcertified cardiologists include Medical Director Dr. Sastry Prayaga and Dr. Ahmed Athar, both interventional cardiologists, plus Drs. Dai-Yuan Wang and ShujaRasoolboth invasive cardiologists. These physicians make life-saving cardiac

care available in the River Valley. Their practice, Cardiology Associates of North Central Arkansas, can be reached at 479968-4311.

AirStrip OB App helps doctors monitor labor Saint Mary’s Regional Medical Center recently launched a cutting-edge mobile patient-monitoring program that allows Saint Mary’s obstetriciangynecologists (Ob-Gyns) to keep a closer eye on labor and delivery patients. The program provides them with immediate access to important data, patient safety information and treatment. The hospital is the first healthcare facility in the River Valley region to acquire the AirStrip OB technology that helps obstetricians closely monitor women in labor. The technology delivers live vital patient data – including fetal heart rate, maternal contraction patterns, along with vital signs and nursing notes from Saint Mary’s labor and delivery unit – to the physician’s smartphone or tablet. The program works with a variety of mobile devices, is cleared by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, and meets support compliance with federal patient privacy regulations. “AirStrip OB offers a crucial layer of protection and helps look after the comfort, safety and security of patients,” said Sherry McClure, director of Saint Mary’s Women’s and Children’s department. “No matter the demands of the day or a physician’s loca-

In the Surgical Services department, Saint Mary’s installed new laparoscopic surgical equipment, a purchase totaling $150,000. Another $78,000 was invested in patient monitors for the progressive care unit. “Improving accessibility to safe, high quality health care is an ongoing goal of Saint Mary’s Regional Health System. As our region grows, and as many individuals and families gain access to coverage, Saint Mary’s is well positioned to provide enhanced access to some of the best diagnostic and treatment technologies as well as more physicians in more specialties,” said Mike McCoy, interim Chief Executive Officer (CEO). “We are committed to meeting the growing medical needs of the communities we serve well into the future.”

Recognized for quality and safety The hospital’s dedication to patient safety is evidenced consistent recognition made by state and national organizations. The Arkansas Foundation for Medical Care (AFMC) recently recognized Saint Mary’s for excellence in health care. The hospital recently earned a Hospital CAUTI Reduction Award from the AFMC annual Quality Awards program. Saint Mary’s is the only hospital in the state to be quoted in the Joint Commission’s Implementation Guide for Reduction of Surgical Site Infections, and is one of 17 hospitals in the U.S. to be highlighted for “best practice.”

Funeral Homes and On-Site Cremation Services

Over A Century of Caring Personalized Caskets

Each individual has a unique character that should be reflected in their funeral service. We understand and value this concept, which is why we offer a variety of service options as unique as the individuals that we serve.

A Reputation for Excellent Service and Affordability • No Hidden Charges • All Existing Life, Burial and Pre-Paid Policies Accepted • In-Home Arrangements • Family’s Needs First • Proven Excellence Cornwell Funeral Home, and on-site cremation service with locations in Danville and Dardanelle, is a family-owned business established over four generations ago. President Rush Cornwell expressed that since its establishment in 1898, “Cornwell Funeral Home has strived to ensure that we provide personalized and compassionate services to the families who have entrusted the care of their loved one to us.” He further adds that at no additional cost, Cornwell Funeral Home accepts all pre-arrangement contracts and insurance policies that a family has with other funeral service providers. According to the Cornwell family, honesty and a true concern for those we serve have been the building blocks and hallmark of our reputation. The professional staff at Cornwell Funeral Home is committed to providing dignified, respectful and personalized assistance to every family. Recognizing that each family is unique, it is important to Cornwell’s staff to work with each family to create a meaningful service that honors the life and memory of their loved one. Mike Cornwell always believed that such personal service is part of the reason Cornwell Funeral Home is the second oldest existing business in Yell County, the fifth oldest funeral home in the state of Arkansas and why more families put their trust in Cornwell Funeral Home more than any other, year after year. And the only funeral home with an on-site crematory and personalized caskets, Cornwell Funeral Home is moving into the 21st century.

On-Site Cremation

ll funeral homes advertise cremation services, but most people are shocked to learn that the cremation process is usually subcontracted out to third-party industrial crematories. However, all cremations at Cornwell Funeral Home are performed at their Dardanelle facility by one of their licensed funeral directors. Having an on-site crematory puts Cornwell Funeral Home in a class of its own. As expressed by Rush Cornwell, this is just another way in which we guarantee that your loved one’s care is always within reach and our number one priority.
