A Romantic Death In the last Singled Out, we heard a female’s take on breakup management, complete with angry girl music, wine therapy and finding inspiration through proverbs, friendship and ice cream. This month, the guys weigh in on their slightly different coping mechanisms.
M
ost people have experienced hopeless moments in their lives. Often these experiences begin bad, get worse, and then as everyone says, time heals the pain. Whether these moments occur in hospital waiting rooms, college football stadiums or the comfort of home, they are never welcome. Similarly, most people have had their share of romance, romances or romantic interludes. Depending on your personality or stage in life, you may disagree with me. Regardless, I think these moments are almost always invited. It seems like an odd comparison to make. Yet when jammed together, these two words render a powerful accusation: hopeless romantic. I use the term accusation for two reasons.
Number one, I’m a guy and I’m trying to save just a little face. Number two, a lot of people that fall into this category deny it, even to themselves. The fact is, very few hopeless romantics admit it. That isn’t very surprising considering the phrase just isn’t, for the most part, pleasant. The idea of being hopeless in any aspect of your life is off-putting, but when used to describe one’s love life, it just seems cruelly unfair. Over time, I’ve heard many definitions, and some imply that your average hopeless romantic will never find happiness. However, I don’t think those definitions are correct. Of course, what do I know about any of it? Well, I used to be a hopeless romantic. Yes, I just admitted it. If you disregard the fact that my name doesn’t appear at the top of this article, it’s a fairly bold move. As I sit here watching television (and writing this article), I
can’t say that I once believed every person in this world would experience a Sleepless in Seattle romance during their lifetime. I feel like I’m more likely to fall off the Empire State Building than to find the love of my life up there. However, I did once believe that for most people there was someone that could be tolerated (if not loved) on a daily basis. Nonetheless, the last few years have definitely brought my reasoning into question. I won’t go into the specifics, but after two failed relationships in the last two years, I am starting to think it’s just not worth the effort. People get invested, expectations rise, and then it’s only a matter of time before someone ends up pissed off. It seems to me, relationships just aren’t made of the “happily ever after” stuff we see in the movies. After taking a sip of my scotch, I find myself thinking about Dudley Moore in Arthur (or maybe Russell Brand for the younger readers). With the exception of the uncontrolled alcoholism, he had it pretty good. Maybe I need my own Hobson? Someone to take care of me, run my baths for me and fetch me anything I need. In one quote from the movie, Arthur says to Hobson, “Oh, stay with me Hobson. You know how I hate to be alone.” Remembering that Arthur almost gives up $750 million to be with Linda, and that I can’t possibly afford
my own Hobson, I take another sip of scotch and move on. Working my way through the guide, I find several options: Forgetting Sarah Marshall, Groundhog Day and Coming to America. I love every one of these movies, so the choice should be difficult. It isn’t. I think to myself, “No to all three.” There is no room in my life for anymore of that. I want something with no underlying love affair. And just when I think finding something with no signs of romance is hopeless, there it is, my favorite movie of all time. Plus, it’s a man’s movie, complete with murder, prison fights, valuable lessons and absolutely NO romantic endings. I get a fresh drink and settle in to watch. Luckily I caught it with about two thirds left to go. This is exactly what I need. Although I’ve seen it many times before, I watch the entire thing without thinking. As it gets close to the end, just before the line is uttered, I say it to myself. Then I hear it on the television. In the words of Andy Dufresne, “Remember Red, hope is a good thing, maybe the best of things, and no good thing ever dies.” Well crap.

You know how the saying goes… “Bro’s before all the fascinating and charming women in your life.” Well, I think that is how it goes. Whether it’s your annual trip to the Iron Bowl, weekly poker night or just an epic night on the town – It doesn’t have to look like a Ketel One commercial, but every guy knows what it is, it’s Bro’s Night Out. It’s that distinctive time guys all need – a time to bond combined with a license to be stupid. It’s high fives, fist bumps, insults and horribly inappropriate demeaning nicknames; it’s time with the boys, it’s Bro time. Case in point: One Spanish dude running down a street in his pajamas being chased by a herd of bulls looks a bit like an idiot; however, a group of Spanish dudes running down the street in their pajamas being chased down the street by a herd of bulls is, frankly, pretty damn awesome. The license to be stupid is why we have bros in the first place, and things are just better when it’s you and your crew. When you get together with the boys you can just be yourself, and if you aren’t, they are the first ones to call you out on it. We’re just not that complicated; we don’t have to express our deepest feelings or share our life goals.

All we need is to have fun, find ourselves in the company of other Y chromosomes, maybe get a little rowdy and not worry about anything for a while. There is just something special about sitting around having a drink while being insulted by some of your best friends and, God forbid, you have an attractive sister because you will never hear the end of it. This is the fundamental difference between men and women. We don’t have to open up to one another and be vulnerable to be close friends. Our definition of vulnerable is playing any sport without a cup. Our bonding is born of the shared experience: the big game, the great hunt, the road trip or just a day paddling the river. It is watching your team win the National Championship together, despite the fact that this is one of the few occasions in which it is acceptable for bros to hug and weep openly. This is the type of experience that fuels our friendships. It’s what we talk about (over and over and over) when we get together; fools reveling in our folly. With all due respect, this is why Girl’s Night Out doesn’t hold a candle to Bro’s Night Out. It is, in fact, the polar opposite: 1. It never would take place at a spa or any venue with the word “Tapas” on the menu. 2. We would never all sing along if some life affirming song started playing. 3. It does not by definition exclude the opposite sex. In fact, it often affirmatively attempts to include the opposite sex (with varying degrees of success), despite the fact that our behavior quite often leads to a de facto exclusion of women. Every night does not have to be epic, half the fun is the simple camaraderie of sitting around enjoying libations while talking about our war stories, great sporting events and saying kind and complimentary things about the women in our life. It is never “how do you feel about that”; it is “remember when” or even better, “watch this” and yes, some of the greatest of these moments can include a trip to the emergency room. We are not kind, we are not supportive, and we give each other hell and enjoy every minute of it. Nevertheless, there is simply no substitute for time with your buds.

I
t was the RSVP interview a lifetime in the making when I was privileged to speak with Montgomery’s most famous rock legend and the man who made my maiden name famous. Growing up as a Shaw, it was a family event anytime he was nearby on tour, and a television appointment to see my daddy’s first cousin on American Bandstand, Solid Gold or watch Miami Vice while Tubbs and Crockett cruised in a convertible rocking to his first solo release, Girls with Guns. No matter your last name, his music takes you back and at the same time, carries you forward. As Montgomerians, he is our collective cousin; a proud relative whose Alabama heritage remains relevant to his artistry. Tommy Shaw was born in Montgomery on September 11, 1953 to Dalton and Mildred Shaw, the baby among his older siblings Danny, Jimmy and Renee. Long before becoming the front man of STYX, Tommy was a simple kid growing up in Prattville when the performance bug first hit. “I would watch the Ed Sullivan Show and stand by the television and imitate Sammy Davis, Jr.” Tommy admits his dancing moves were not up to par. He continued, “I kept thinking if I could just have something in my hands… and then I saw the Beatles.” That live performance made a lasting impression on young Shaw as he entered and won the 4-H talent show at Prattville Junior High, performing the British band’s hit, I Saw Her Standing There. His mother still has the blue ribbon.
High, he tried a group class but found it “boring and rudimentary” when the other students seemed to be there out of obligation. He realized to master the craft, his best bet was to learn from practical experience, so he began to spend more time with his neighbors who shared his innate passion. During this time, Tommy went from having a good ear to learning more difficult chords. He would perform on his front porch to the cars passing by his Madison Avenue address and pretend they were his audience. His talent quickly progressed and at the ripe age of 13, through his connection to Rod Henley who was the dance band leader at Troy State University, he began playing in local clubs and bars. His early musical influences ranged from country to R & B to jazz, and having earned money as a musician since his early teens, his logical step after graduating from Robert E. Lee High School was to move to Nashville. There he eventually met the musicians that would soon lead him to worldwide fame. For the next three years, he toured with a group called MSFunk, and while this time was financially uncertain, Tommy’s talent as a live performer was never in question. “About 1975 when disco and the oil embargo hit, we were driving through Iowa when we got pulled over and the car and U-Haul with all of our equipment was repo’d.” Tommy knew they were broke but had no idea they were skipping payments, so at this point he realized there was only one thing to do – go back to Alabama.
The thrill of victory was soon overshadowed with the news most kids fear – the family was moving to Montgomery. Tommy reminisced, “Back then, we might as well have been moving a world away, which is funny to think about now… but all I knew as a kid was I wouldn’t be seeing my friends anymore.” As fate would have it, this move proved to be most pivotal for the up-and-coming icon. His new neighbors were an eclectic mix of ages, and many were musicians who took an adolescent Tommy under their wing. Increasingly interested, he convinced his hardworking father, an Alagasco employee, and his musically inclined mother to present him with his first guitar on his 10th birthday. “My oldest brother says after that, they never saw me again. I was always in my room practicing.” To learn the instrument, while attending school at Capitol Heights Junior

The Kiss audience was not exactly blown away by the local band’s performance, but Tommy was. He left the large arena stage wanting more. Shortly after, based on the recognition he received while performing with MSFunk in Chicago, he received the phone call to join STYX. It was 1975 and within a few years, performing at the Fox Theatre, he was presented his first gold record for the Grand Illusion. This was the moment he knew he “had made it.” The Alabama native went on to write some of the groups largest hits including Fooling Yourself (The Angry Young Man), Renegade, Blue Collar Man and Too Much Time on My Hands. Returning meant a steady gig at Kegler’s Cove inside Bama Lanes, where he played with childhood friends in a band called Harvest. The bowling alley may not have been the most glamorous, but this time afforded Tommy the hometown connection for his band to be a last-minute fill in as the opening act to Kiss. Preparing for the show at Garrett Coliseum, completely green to the business, Tommy naively asked Gene Simmons when his band would get their sound check. “I’ll never forget Gene taking me aside and telling me ‘how this thing works.’ He was in his platform shoes and all – but he was nice enough to let us have the sound check and over the years we have become friends.”

Now four decades later, after playing with both the Damn Yankees and Shaw Blades, Tommy remains on the road about 200 days per year performing with STYX. Despite the demands of this touring schedule, he remains devoted to creating quality music that keeps true to the heart of who he is, even when it challenges him beyond his level of comfort. This is evidenced by his latest solo project, a bluegrass album titled The Great Divide, which connects his songwriting and musical abilities from stories of his past to newfound talents, such as playing the mandolin. This endeavor spans generations and is one of coming full circle, finding his way home and fully reconnecting with the music that set him on his path as a child in Alabama.

“I think my dad would be charmed to have his story immortalized. He was a fan of my music. I think he would be able to relate more to this than anything I’ve ever done,” says Tommy. During the process of the album, Tommy realized another truth – mother knows best. He recounts, “She always said things will work out, and they always do.” With that optimism, The Great Divide compels listeners to a personal journey of hope and discovery. Authentic in delivery, this album is also available in vinyl. Tommy deliberately chose this medium to accurately deliver the music of his roots, and from the texture of the paper sleeve to cover artwork, he toiled over each detail. “It is a ritual [playing an album] from selecting from the sleeve to placing it on the turntable. It is an experience, tangible like a book – something to be cherished.” His phenomenal range as an artist scales even higher than his trademarked tenor sound. Tommy’s voice summons audiences to listen, and his stage presence as a guitarist and performer commands the crowd to willfully engage. His vocal register and charisma remain as strong as ever, and perhaps the only thing more powerful than his sound is his relentless passion for music. Much like the grooves on a vinyl recording, Montgomery is etched into the core of this legendary musician. Though Los Angeles based, he still occasionally enjoys meals of fried chicken, collard greens and fried okra with his wife Jeanne (whom you may have seen recently on Bravo’s Flipping Out). His siblings remain in Alabama, along with his mother, to whom the lyrics of The Great Divide seem intended: “Please wait for me, I’ll be coming home. Please pray for me, I’ll be coming home.” Luckily, the wait is over. Since opening in July 2009, AlleyBAR has been the host venue for a variety of creative and exciting private events. During the Air Force Information Technology Convention that takes place at the Renaissance Convention Center in August each year, L-3 Stratis has chosen AlleyBAR to host their event three years in a row. This year was exceptionally fun as AlleyBAR’s Back Alley was transformed into an action packed casino with Black Jack, Texas Hold’em, Craps and Roulette from Good Fellas Gambling of Birmingham. Attendees enjoyed barbeque provided by Dreamland and an open bar hosted by L-3 Stratis. Upon entering, guests gave a monetary donation in exchange for “play” money to use on the gambling tables. All donations benefited the Wounded Warrior Project, which provides programs and services to severely injured service members during the time between active duty and transition to civilian life. As the donations rolled in throughout the night, it was difficult to heed Kenny Rogers’ advice to, “Never count your money when you’re sittin’ at the table.”

T
he Riverwalk Stadium, home of the Montgomery Biscuits baseball team, took on a completely original genre on the night of Friday, October 14. Guests were invited to a Big Time, Big Top Event, and that is exactly what they got! The event was circus themed, designed by Bob Vardaman of Events Management, and benefited Montgomery AIDS Outreach at its annual fundraiser, Dining with Friends. Bob, dressed as the ring master in a top hat and tails, took advantage of the historic portion of the stadium that faced Tallapoosa Street to ensure the Big Top feel, rafters and all. Guests entered the box office foyer to find two pairs of vaudevillian style burlesque dancers, high atop the guests’ heads, performing vintage side show acts, including fan dances, umbrella twirls and juggling. Suspended from the rafters was a masked femme fatale twirling
from her lyra hoop to the crowd’s amazement. Doorways were draped in red velour, spot lights shown across the crowd, and masked servers passed popcorn and corn dogs from hollowed out guitars. After guests filled the room to brimming proportion, a gong sounded and the red curtains rose to reveal the 300 foot hallway with 26 tables in single file, covered in popcorn boxes and multicolored balloons. After guests feasted on a dinner of either “The Famous Disappearing Burger” or “The Rubber Chicken and Noodle Plate,” another curtain was raised to expose the Big Top Cupcake display of more than 300 cupcakes. The night proceeded with more mind blowing performances from the same femme fatale and the Hot Toddies Flaming Cabaret, amazing the crowd with sparkling fans, blazing hula hoops, torch umbrellas, fire balls and fire eating. Guests continued to dance to the rocking music provided by DJ Jeff of Absolute Entertainment until the party ended. It was a Big Time.

DAVID DICKENSAUGE, JR. With a resume teeming with culinary accolades, David Dickensauge, Jr., Executive Chef and Operational Partner of ROUX, brings his exploding hometown flavor to Montgomery. The Louisiana native first developed his deep love for the art of true New Orleans Cajun cuisine at 16 while working under the tutelage of Chef Jamie Shannon at Commander’s Palace. Dedicated to achieving a true understanding of his vocation, David then went on to graduate from the Culinary Institute of New Orleans and the University of Alabama with a degree in hotel and restaurant management. He then journeyed across the country, soaking up knowledge across many different restaurant styles and cultures, including Walt Disney World, Biloxi casinos, the University of Alabama and even worked unpaid for six months at the only five-star restaurant in Chicago. “Leaving my family behind was tough… but I needed to travel in order to learn different approaches to the culinary world.” Today, the proud father of 3-year-old Jacob is thrilled with the opportunity to give his customers a taste of New Orleans at ROUX, and there is never a second that passes when he doesn’t truly love what he does.
KATHERINE TRANTHAM Sophisticated from her design down to her dress, Interior Designer Katherine Trantham is quickly making a name for herself. Although she graduated from The University of Alabama only four years ago, the Florida native already owns her own business, Katherine Rebecca Interior Styles, in tandem with managing custom design projects with Gardner Carpet One. Upon graduation, the young designer made the bold decision to move to an unfamiliar city, where she worked under designer Phillip Sides, whom she credits with having a significant impact on her professional success, for three years before branching out to create her own brand. Katherine’s love of travel has proved fruitful in her career, as she finds inspiration in different cultures and styles. “Being exposed to cultures, environments and experiences outside my daily routine offers a complete recharge of design inspiration for me,” she notes.Although, she acknowledges Montgomery definitely isn’t lacking in talented tradesmen and local artists that help keep her clients dreaming big.“There are so many national and regional gems here amongst small town charm.” An absolute people person, Katherine thrives on being outside, whether it is sightseeing in a different city or merely enjoying outdoor happy hour with friends. MICHAEL SERDULA Michael Serdula, Executive Chef for The Olive Room, is an inspiring example of self-taught success. Formerly the Sous Chef for Amsterdam Café in Auburn and the Executive Sous Chef for SaZa’s Serious Italian Food, Michael began his culinary career as a salad cook before discovering his full potential. In addition to delighting customers with his passed-down family recipes and contemporary food creations, Michael is actively involved in benefiting the community through participation in charity events such as The Blackout Cancer Event and 86 Hunger. JOE HOWARD He might describe himself as an introvert, but the ambitious Joe Howard is busy paving the way for the creative arts in Montgomery. A savvy businessman by day as a Wireless and Data Solution Consultant for the Sprint/Nextel Corporation, the entrepreneur recently launched a swanky modeling group titled The House of Suave’ and is gearing up to host his first fashion show on November 27. The University of Troy graduate is thrilled with the opportunity to provide clients with their needed wireless and data solutions offered by Sprint/Nextel, but hasn’t lost sight of his creative vision. In addition to The House of Suave’, Joe is concluding his first solo book “Choice Words,” an eclectic collection of poetry, and he is in the initial stages of commencing a nonprofit agency geared toward benefiting underprivileged youth – but his involvement doesn’t yield there. The avid golfer is adamant on allowing his walk of life to create paths for others, and is an active member in church ministries, a speaker for the Family Sunshine Center, a volunteer for Partners in Education, and proud husband and father to his beautiful wife Sancha and son Myson. A self-proclaimed “gym rat,” Joe is a health and fitness enthusiast and is always, no surprise here, dressed to the nines.
JASON BAKER Although the recession has sadly seen the close of many small businesses, the superior customer service and dedication to quality of Jason Baker, Vice President of Baker’s Framing and Art Supplies, has caused his family business to continue to thrive. Jason began his career at Baker’s as a part-time employee in high school, and after graduating from Auburn University at Montgomery, he came aboard full time. As an art aficionado himself, Jason has since been thrilled with the opportunity to assist clients in finding the ideal complement to their prized artwork. “Custom framing is an art in itself…I enjoy helping new and old customers find that perfect piece for their frame.” Outside of the store, the avid golf and tennis player teaches 2-year-old Sunday School, and as a father to a young boy himself, also serves on the YMCA Boys Work Committee. Although Jason is a staunch supporter of the newly revitalized downtown area, he takes every chance he can to escape to Lake Martin with his family and golden retriever, Bogie.
JOY RANDOLPH CLINKSCALE Fueled by creativity and determination, Joy Randolph Clinkscale is a triple threat – dedicated, business wise and incredibly talented. In addition to her role as a Graphics Operator for WSFA 12 News, the go getter is also the founder and owner of two businesses, JRGraffix Creative Solutions LLC, a graphic design service, and Fitfully Made Boutique, a vibrant collection of female athletic apparel. “Even though I do a lot, one thing that is common in all of them is the opportunity to create,” says the Troy University graduate of her multi-faceted career. Joy previously served as a Marketing Supervisor for MMI Outdoor, but it was her love of fitness that influenced her creation of the boutique, where each item of clothing is custom designed. And as if she isn’t busy enough, the new mother is also an amateur figure competitor and has even been featured in Oxygen Magazine – making her professional bodybuilder husband proud. Even with all her remarkable accomplishments, Joy still hasn’t lost her thirst. “I’ve learned that no amount of talent or skill can replace consistency and persistence in achieving your goals.”
KIMBERLY CAUTHEN Blessed with a huge voice and even bigger dreams, Kim Cauthen is making noise in the River Region – literally. The Hooper Academy graduate ventured to Boston University’s Tanglewood Institute after high school, where she studied Opera, and then completed her studies in English at Huntingdon College. In addition to her current role as the Director of Fundraising and Collaborative Agreements for the Alabama Association of Independent Colleges and Universities, the brunette beauty also manages a blog titled Montgomery Underground, a compilation of under-the-radar local artists, musicians and upcoming shows. Of course, Kim is not always behind the scenes – the emerging songwriter also plays the violin and fiddle for band Distant Kin and makes guest appearances as a singer in swing band The LoFi Loungers.Truly dedicated to promoting the culture and youth of the city, Kim notes, “Helping a young person pursue their dreams is so rewarding…it’s great to be behind something that I truly believe in.” Outside of the office and when she doesn’t have her hands on an instrument, the Italian/French cinema enthusiast can be found at the Capri Theatre in Cloverdale with her boyfriend, Hunter.
MELODY KITCHEN A steadfast supporter of the importance of health awareness, Melody Kitchen, Public Relations Manager for Baptist Health, fights for the cause both inside the hospital walls and out. Born with an unyielding thirst for knowledge, the Texas native received both her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Texas Tech University, during which she served as the Public Relations Specialist for the university’s Health and Sciences Center. Upon graduation, the diehard Texas Tech fan left The Lone Star State for Sweet Home Alabama, where she worked her way up at Baptist Health from Communications Specialist to her current role. Melody also serves as the Mission and Advocacy Chair for the American Cancer Society’s Junior Executive Board, where she has the unique ability to provide guidance through her inspiring survivor story. “I was diagnosed with thyroid cancer in college. I’m 11 years cancer free, and I want everyone who is diagnosed with cancer to be able to say the same thing.” Although her strength serves as an inspiration to many, Melody credits her courage to both her mother and husband Sebastian for their unwavering love and encouragement.
TASHA SCOTT Born with an incredible entrepreneurial spirit, Tasha Scott is a firm believer in dreaming big. And with her devotion and dedication, the Scott Realtime Reporting founder/owner has successfully turned her dreams into a reality. As a certified court reporter that specializes in CART (Communication Access Realtime Translation), Tasha provides a service for the hearing disabled in the business, education and government sectors. “I love that with my business I am able to build long, lasting relationships and ultimately create opportunities for others. It is very humbling to hear a student or professional say ‘thanks for helping me.’” Her compassion and servant heart extends past the courtroom as well; the Prince Institute of Professional Studies graduate has also found a calling in motivational speaking, and has launched a mentor group for junior high and high school girls titled GEMStones. Although she commends local organizations such as the Small Business Incubator and Chamber of Commerce for their direction and support in the growth of her business, Tasha’s greatest inspiration is her family – husband Morris and daughter Milah. “I want to leave a legacy for my daughter that it’s okay to dream BIG.” 56

Alabama Shakespeare Festival’s take on “Dracula” harkened back to the early roots of vampire lore. There were no sparkly Twilight or synthetic blood-drinking True Blood references to be found. As Juri Henley-Cohn, who commanded attention as Dracula, said in promotional interviews, “This is the traditional one. This is the story that everything else has been based upon.”
Even so, “Dracula” succeeded in presenting a rare combination of horror and comedy, the latter of which was mostly due to Renfield’s character, played to the hilt by Greg Jackson. Even Dracula himself made some hilariously biting remarks – sorry, couldn’t help myself – delivered perfectly by Juri so the audience felt they were the only ones in on the alarming turn of events to come. But make no mistake, those looking for chills and thrills were certainly satisfied, as “Dracula” continuously churned out genuinely frightening and surprising scenes. Impressive and detailed staging perfectly set an ominous and dark mood, in addition to copious amounts of blood, fog and pyrotechnics. Some of the audience members even became a part of the action, much to their surprise! The cast and crew of “Dracula” indeed outdid themselves, turning in a thoroughly entertaining and groundbreaking ASF production that had audience members abuzz at the close of the curtain.
Chicago By Kim Traff The Montgomery Performing Arts Centre came alive when one of the most loved bands in history performed on October 14. With 50 hit songs, 18 gold records, a Grammy and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, it’s no wonder that Chicago had a sell-out show filled with dedicated fans wanting to “Stay the Night.” Opening with the “Ballet/Make Me Smile” medley and “Along Comes a Woman,” the band roared through several songs off its first five albums. Being one of their younger fans, I was looking forward to some of the later albums filled with ballads that many of us played repeatedly after a break up. A personal highlight was watching founding members Robert Lamm, Lee Loughnane, James Pankow and Walt Parazaider rock through the two-hour set with incredible enthusiasm, showmanship and sound. Other highlights of the night included Robert Lamm performing his free form introduction to “Does Anybody Really Know What Time It Is” as trumpet player Lee Loughnane sang hitting sky high notes. Keith Howland did a great job filling Terry Kath’s shoes as he performed “If You Leave Me Now,” while bassist Jason Scheff (Peter Cetera’s replacement) stole the show with “You’re the Inspiration.” Even with their newer contemporary songs, the band did a great job of keeping the big band sound we love. As band members left the stage, fans demanded an encore. Chicago reappeared and rocked MPAC with show stopper “25 or 6 to 4.” Despite its long history, this is not a band clinging to past glory… Chicago continues to put on an incredible show! 60

Hunt The Thrill of the
The day was August 17th. The year was 2005. The temperature was, well, it was August. I was a junior at The University of Alabama, and I had borrowed my parent’s camcorder to film my good buddy, Philip Pitts, shoot his first hog with a bow. After an hour of hunting, we waded through knee-deep, snake infested water and got close enough for Philip to make a perfect shot on his first wild Alabama hog. Fast forward through a six-year rollercoaster and you will find us doing the same exact thing. Traveling the world, living every hunter’s dream, hosting the TV show Endless Season Outdoors. And yes, this is an absolute dream. After hunting in more than 20 states and into Alberta and Saskatchewan, people often ask us what is our favorite state to hunt. Our reply is always the same – Sweet Home Alabama. Alabama has so much to
offer, with so many different species to hunt, generous bag limits and long hunting seasons; when it comes to hunting, it is hard to beat our home state. Organizations and businesses like Alabama Black Belt Adventures and Mossy Oak Properties Alabama Land Crafters are doing a great job in helping hunters find places to hunt.
That’s why over the last few years we have been blessed to capture some great footage even when we weren’t on the road. Many people seem to be under the impression that they have to spend thousands of dollars and drive hundreds of miles to go on a good hunt, and that is just not the case. Alabama, especially the Black Belt, has some unbelievable hunting. In fact, some of the best hunting in the state is found right here in the River Region. From deer to turkeys to hogs and all kinds of small game, there is always something for everyone to enjoy.

Like the connection that a parent and a child create when sitting under a white oak tree together, or even if it is just that one weekend a year when someone can get out in the woods and escape the stress of everyday life. For so many hunters, this time of year is magical. The leaves are starting to change and that chill is in the air. This is the time of year we live for. Hunters are a special breed. We are conservationists and once again, hunting season is upon us. Jacob Walker and his partner Philip Pitts host the hunting show Endless Season Outdoors on the Pursuit Channel.

Hope for the Helpless

a proud parent of three Montgomery Humane Society (MHS) pets including our doxies, Pebbles and BamBam, and our self-potty trained cat, Snickers, it is always rewarding to visit their former foster home and catch up with Executive Director, Steven Tears. The Montgomery Humane Society continues a great service to our four-legged, furry community and the humans who love them. One of the most exciting announcements from MHS is the upcoming dog park to be located at Blount Cultural Park. This came about when our city was a national finalist in the running for a $100,000 grant from PetSafe to construct a dog park, and despite over 26,000 votes in our favor, the grant was awarded to Huntington, West Virginia. Because of the local interest generated during this contest, the city responded by allocating half the funding for this park, and along with private and corporate donors, the dream is becoming a reality in the Blount Cultural Park. Already, the fence has been delivered and construction is underway, beginning this fall. Steven says,

“Every update I receive on fundraising events, major donors and corporate support leaves me no doubt that Montgomery will have the benchmark ‘Dog Park’ for the state.” Our doggies can’t wait! While private contributions for the Dog Park have poured in, the funding for this project has been a double-edged sword for the Montgomery Humane Society. The support will go a long way toward building the park; however, ongoing contributions are needed to sustain the day-to-day operations at MHS. It’s important to remember that if you’d like to make a donation, you mark “Shelter Needs” on your check so that the funds will be applied to the daily expenses of caring for homeless animals. Other items needed year round include: bleach, laundry detergent, hand soap, hand sanitizer and a variety of office supplies. The pet population problem is overwhelming with an estimated 4-6 million euthanizations each year in the U.S., and there is no “magical formula” for selecting which animals will

be given a second chance at life or have their lives ended the next morning. However, thanks to the hard work of Rachel Tears and her team at the Alabama Animal Alliance, the population at our shelter (and therefore the amount of animals euthanized) has declined over the past few years. Responsible for this trend are programs including, “Spay Montgomery,” which provides grants for qualified owners to have their pet altered for only $10, and “Trap, Neuter and Release,” which controls the number of feral (or “wild”) cats by working to
bring stability to the colony through spaying or neutering, reducing the number of euthanized animals in Montgomery by almost 3,000 pets in the past three years. When it comes to this controversial topic locally, Steven reports there are some in the community who make this harsh reality almost unbearable. Citizens opposing this practice text, email and post on Facebook terms such as “killer” or “heartless,” making this gut-wrenching job even that more difficult. Steven wants to remind the public of the shelter’s “Open Admission” policy, which allows for the acceptance of any animal, adoptable or not, healthy or sick, young or old. The MHS staff is forever committed to the animals who call the adoption center home and work tirelessly to save as many pets as possible. Steven further explains that if MHS became a “No-Kill” shelter, they could no longer accept every animal that came in to the facility. It would simply mean, “The euthanizations would occur down the street and may or may not be done humanely.” He credits his staff who come to work daily (many on a volunteer basis) and continue to get their heart broken for giving him the motivation to stay positive and work for
the common goal of saving and improving the lives of as many animals as they can in Montgomery. Perhaps acquiring a new best friend (and saving a life) is in your plans sometime soon. Steven reminds those considering a pet for the holidays to take into consideration that they can become a commitment of 15 years or more, and therefore it should be a well-planned decision and not a “last minute gift idea” for someone on your list. However, if you’re ready, the dogs and cats would love to see you at the shelter located at 1150 John Overton Drive directly across from Gunter Air Force Base. The latter is particularly helpful this season if you are, like me, an Auburn fan. For you fans of that other team, the weather is another enjoyable bonus to the gilded success you’ve enjoyed since the third of September. As a staunch Tiger, I would love to say that a rude awakening awaits your squad on November 26th, but I am all-butconvinced that an unholy crimson wrath awaits our heroes of the plains. Facing such a dire prospect, my fellow Aubs are encouraged to seek solace on that day in the conspicuous consumption of anything with strong sense-deadening properties. In fact, I suggest you start now stockpiling liquor like the US stockpiled nuclear warheads during the Cold War. After all, if you can’t remember the game, can you really be sure that we lost, or even that there was a game at all? That is, of course, advice that no sane person should ever follow unless their dream is to land a starring role in a future episode of Cops. Instead welcome the movies, music and websites featured here for their entirely safe and stress-relieving properties:

Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 1 I haven’t seen any of these movies and have no intention of seeing this latest one. Yet who can deny their cultural import to the countless women, teens and slightly creepy older men that adore them? For that reason alone, I feel compelled to mention that this new Twilight adventure hits theaters on November 18th. Based on the promotional photos I’ve seen of the movie, I am going to assume that there will continue to be a lot of scenes of pretty young people staring longingly at each other. Some of those people will be vampires. Also, the movie will make more in the first weekend than most of us will ever see during our entire lives. So get out there, Team Jacob. Your support is needed.

I haven’t had the opportunity to herald many locals in this column up until now, but more importantly, I haven’t had the inclination, either. With this Montgomery based band, I can declare with unreserved enthusiasm my local pride. I interviewed them for Now Hear This a few months back, and I’ve since had the opportunity to spend some time with this, their debut album. Though critics have a tendency to refer to this style of largely instrumental music as “post-rock,” bands like these guys and Austin’s Explosions in the Sky have too much fire and urgency to their sound to be saddled with such a sterile term. This is rock and roll—big, brawny, ambitious and loud—but delivered with an additional layer of intelligence and genre experimentation (you’ll hear jazz, prog rock, electronic and classical influences in here also) that make them larger than life. Like Titans, in fact.

By Blue Sullivan Josh Moates is one of the River Region’s renaissance men in the truest and best sense. For years he played bass for one of the region’s biggest musical success stories, Trust Company. The band’s debut album, The Lonely Position of Neutral, was a breakout smash in 2002, rising to number 11 on the Billboard album chart on the strength of its modern rock hit single, “Downfall.” The band’s follow up in 2005, “True Parallels,” was a Billboard hit as well, but dissention broke the band up soon after. When they reformed in 2011, Josh chose not to rejoin them. In addition to cultivating a successful career as a photographer (he does brilliant work for our magazine, among his many clients), Josh had a new project that had captured his passions. That project is MuchNoise (www.muchnoise.com), a great new site for unsigned bands that provides them a free showcase to promote their music. It’s an advantage that Josh and his former bandmates didn’t have when they were coming up, and it explains some of Josh’s altruistic enthusiasm in discussing it, which RSVP had a chance to do recently. RSVP: How did this idea first come about and when? Josh: The idea came about when I first saw CDbaby.com. They have a site where indie bands can sell their CDs / Mp3s online for a small fee. I really liked the site, and I started to think about what I could do to help out new bands. So originally I wanted to sell band CDs, merchandise and pretty much anything a band had to offer, and it sort of just got out of hand. So I got up with a really close friend, programmer David Gatlin, to brainstorm on what was possible. After weeks of late nights and six packs during the winter of 2010, he
suggested we have an Internet radio and iPhone app where unsigned and independent bands upload their music and it plays on the web or your phone, like a radio station. I was all about it, perfect and simple. So we hammered out the details, built the site and launched it on 1/1/11 and are hoping to have the iPhone app finished soon. RSVP: How did your experience in a successful band influence the way you crafted the website? JM: Well, I feel like I’m in tune to what indie bands need and want out of a site. Free promotion is super helpful to bands on a low budget – I’ve been there.
RSVP: When did you first decide to become a musician and why? JM: I knew the day I picked up a bass guitar. Never forget it, I was 13 in my friend David Persons bedroom and on his bed sat a white 4 string bass. I didn’t even know what it was, and when I picked it up, I told him this is what I want to play. After that I was totally obsessed with it. I still am. But I owe a ton to my dad who always played for me when I was young. RSVP: What artists influenced you early in your career? JM: Red Hot Chili Peppers, Nirvana, Deftones, Rage Against the Machine and Counting Crows. And always the friendly competition of other local bands. RSVP: After experiencing such early and profound success with Trust Company, why did you retire from the band? JM: It was just a gut feeling really. Something told me this wasn’t going to be what I did forever, though it was really hard for me to believe. I was thinking of how hard we worked and how much energy we all poured into it, but I just knew. RSVP: How much did local support aid you and Trust Company’s success? JM: The local scene was really amazing when we started. The support really kept us going. The lack of venues was the hardest part. The fans would come no matter if it was in a parking lot or a local gym. I have to say we got to experience some great local support. RSVP: What changes have you made to the site since its inception? JM: We have a good number of bands that have done a live session with us, including Baby Baby, Ocean Is Theory, The Bandar-Log, Yesterday’s Revenge, The Arrangement and LEX, just to name a few. Haden Brightwell and Russ Daly have a new project called Crooked Cars, and I’m really excited to get in the studio with them real soon.
