nding a year and beginning again is bittersweet; the satisfaction of meeting goals set twelve months ago is balanced by the realization of the passage of time. Since there is no hidden secret for prolonging the days, I have found that living in the moment makes me more grateful. Instead of lamenting the early darkness brought on by winter, I focus on the hope provided by every ray of light. While it seems necessary to simplify our lives during this economic state, why not choose to focus on the many things for which we are thankful. For those who didn’t quite reach their goals in 2008, isn’t it wonderful that we can close the door on unresolved struggles and wipe the slate clean and begin fresh? With that in mind, we have some great features with resources to help you reach your goals in 2009, as well as ideas to help you break away from the ordinary way of doing things. This issue is also filled with fascinating people bringing energy and culture to our area... artists, musicians, business owners and executives who are shaking things up right here in the River Region! The event planning side of our business is thriving. Whether a private party, fundraiser, corporate function, wedding, or rehearsal dinner, our “Socially Seen” feature gives you a look into the details of events planned by RSVP Montgomery. For local singles, our speed dating events have proven successful for many. We currently have eight couples who met at a speed dating event and are still dating. Pretty exciting! We take pride in providing you a one-stop resource for “All Things Social” and look forward to hearing more of your valuable feedback. We wish you a healthy and happy 2009--one that’s full of positive change.
With warm regards,
Kim Traff

Renewing your
mind body & spirit in 2009 By Lindsey Henig There is something about Ryan Seacrest’s countdown to the New Year that gets the world in the mood for change. As the ball drops on December 31st, we vow to do any and everything to better ourselves. This “go-get-‘em” attitude always starts out strong January 1st, but it’s never too far into this blustery cold month when all goals fade and we’re back to our old habits. How will we keep our resolutions so that they won’t top next year’s list too? The key this year is to select a resolution that you want to do, not one that you feel you need to do. Oftentimes we only notice what we are not, rather than focusing on our passions and creating a life we can enjoy. Take time to reflect on the past twelve months and resolve with a passion for a better quality of life and renewal of your mind, body or spirit. Once you’ve set your goal, seek the support of local talent to keep you accountable and on the right track. Here are a few ideas and sources to get you started:

Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts’ education programs are for people of all ages, offering artists’ demonstrations, gallery talks, engaging lectures, and guided tours. You can even sign up to be a volunteer “Docent,” which is an in-depth adult program that prepares you to give tours, perform studio activities and presentations. The best part about this program is that no art background is required—just a great attitude and lots of enthusiasm! Visit www.mmfa.org for more information.
Help Others
A purely non-selfish resolution, this is a wonderful goal to set for yourself and for those that will benefit from your willingness to reach out and help. Habitat for Humanity’s goal is to eliminate poverty housing and to help provide safe and affordable living situations to deserving families around the country. Here in Montgomery, the newest project is the “New Hope Village” on the Alabama River Parkway. Volunteers are needed on Saturdays from 8:00 am-2:00 pm to help create this community for our great city. If you or a group would like to hammer in a few nails, contact Tish MacInnis at 832-9313 for more information.
Spend Time with Friends and Family
Whether you’re a work-a-holic, or a stay at home Mom, spending time with the ones you love most can somehow prove to be a challenge. Working on our most important relationships can sometimes take a back seat to our everyday activities. Cook together! Instead of meeting your friends out for dinner at a noisy restaurant, agree to be host or hostess for the evening for a cooking party! Everyone brings a few key ingredients and gets a hand in preparing a delicious meal for all to enjoy. Be sure and check out the great choices of wine and finest cuts of meat at Peppertree Steaks N’ Wines and pick up your contribution to a culinary evening. www.steaksnwines.com Get outside! Alabama Shakespeare Festival offers not only enchanting performances, but its grounds are home to a beautiful 250-acre park space that is open to the public. Carve out a piece of time to take everyone in your family to Shakespeare on a pretty day for a picnic, to feed the geese, walk your dogs or just enjoy a day of fresh air. www.asf.net This will be the year to end the cycle of making and breaking resolutions! With all the resources right here in your own back yard, you are officially out of excuses. Surround yourself with an encouraging support group this year. Most importantly, remember to make your resolutions realistic; unattainable goals are a recipe for failure! So start your planning now - a more improved you awaits.

Kissing Frogs By Janine Schoudel
(a singleʼs take on settling down) Is it true you have to kiss a lot of frogs before you find your handsome prince? Wouldn’t it be incredible if we could look into that magic crystal ball and know if this guy with the great smile, but bad shoes, is the one and save a lot of time? Unfortunately, I have yet to find a window to the future and instead, must rely upon my instincts. I remember being a little girl fantasizing about sitting on the bank of a still and murky pond on an oppressive summer day. A frog would hop by and somehow I’d know that a pass of my lips would render him the man of my dreams, just as the fairytale read. Handsome, dashing, debonair, hopelessly devoted to me for freeing him of his slimy prison, with a grandiose castle to whisk me away to just after he fell to his knees in proposal.
socially SEEN In my teens, my knight received a name and a face, and that was Patrick Swayze. He also needed, for the first time, a specific list of traits. Before, all I desired was the castle and horse, preferably white, and maybe a sunset to ride into; the rest was all a bit vague. Now though, I had an enumerated set of standards: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6.
Must be able to dance / be a rebel Must be able to lift me above head like a soaring bird Must be devastatingly handsome Must be a protector of women (especially vulnerable, unwed pregnant ones) Must possess raw sexuality Most importantly, he must never allow me to be put into a corner
As I grew older I realized that I was just kissing amphibians and tossing them back into the water, unchanged. Some, I even felt like turning them into fine French cuisine. My list of things I wanted from a potential Prince Charming, which had once looked like this in my twenties: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8.
love mutual respect sense of humor physical attraction intelligence sexual compatibility compassion shows interest in my passions
was a bit pared down as I entered my third decade. A single, cat-lady panic settled its teeth in and reason went out the window for awhile. My revised list looked more like this: 1. 2.
No criminal record when googled Matching socks
As I looked around at my girlfriends getting married off, or celebrating their five year anniversaries, I realized, many of them had gotten tired of throwing their garden variety frogs back, and simply kept them. They had taken their smaller panic lists and applied them to their long term mates. They settled. So, I look at my twenties criteria and realize it’s still valid, well thought out ideals. I don’t just want these things from a man I plan to spend my life with, but would insist upon them. JAN/FEB 2009 RSVP 13
don’t give up on the ‘happily ever after’ ending we all deserve
I also decided that despite popular convention, suggesting a girl has an expiration date and has to be married and start a family by a certain age, that I enjoy being single. Rather than trying to insert a person into my life just to have one there, I will wait. I believe finding peace in my solitude will make my relationship, when I find the right one, more enjoyable. How do you know if you should join him on his white steed? Ask yourself... Does he let you be you? Respect you? Rock your world and you him? I need my doors opened and my conversations stimulating. I need someone to accompany me to the art museum. I’m not a lopsided princess - I’ll watch football with him on Sunday. Even better, I’ll go out and shop, while he has his friends over to eat the chili I’ve lovingly prepared. But if there is even the faintest voice that answers “NO” to any of the above questions - You need to ask yourself one more question - How can you look at yourself in the mirror, knowing you are committing to a relationship that won’t bring everlasting happiness? I won’t settle for anything less than a man who respects me, and you shouldn’t either. In short, I may end up on the banks of my imaginary pond in my princess gown, waiting eternally for that special frog to jump into view, but I don’t believe that. I still believe he’s out there somewhere. For now, I will love the life I live and have fun searching. Don’t look at singledom as a sentence; use it as a chance to grow. And don’t give up on the “... happily ever after” ending we all deserve.

has an insatiable thirst for life. So, who is Sarah Ashley Longshore? She is the type of person that is addictive to be around. You simply can’t get enough. Her optimism is plentiful. She is an artistic entrepreneur who is rightfully proud of whom she is, and knows the importance of philanthropy, or more aptly put, giving back. Ashley is a Montgomery native that transcended the line of ordinary into an international star. She grew up here in Montgomery, she is gracious, and her “daddy brought [her] up right.” That said, today she has a license to express herself at will, which provides us a view of the world that is matchless, and she has a great time doing it. “Shrim

acrylics and various other mixed media. Later, she included a heavy gloss coating that gives much of her work a real zing that is not fully appreciated without seeing it live. “I’m a Painter. I don’t’ have words for it,” Ashley explains. “I am an expressionist. My work encompasses a new thing that I am in love with and you can tell everything that I am going through in my life through my work.”

Throughout her story, the theme is resilience and unending confidence, and it truly is inspiring.
She represents herself,
negotiates, and finalizes sales on her own. Her work is her life. Beating the ground, in the beginning, she would go to ten galleries knowing that nine would say no. That work now pays dividends. They come to her now. Simply put, art is a mere 20 percent of what she does. The rest is the arduous business side that consists of carefully marketing her art to designers, film stars and film makers,

set designers, and the other patrons of the arts. Today, her calendar is full, and more and more are waiting to get the chance to work with her. There is no substitute for publicity. Her first show was held in Missoula Montana in 2000. This solo show was sponsored by Catlin Galleries, owned by Melanie Alvarez Catlin, daughter of the former President of Mexico, President Alvarez. Ms. Catlin purchased two whimsically provocative pieces that she liked for conversation starters. first show, I was 21 years old, I had the president of Mexico’s daughter, I’ve got people picketing…and they write a huge write up about me. I was like, I Love This. This is for me!” The tradition continues in her work today. She presents tastes with a southern flare and pizzazz that demand a second look and by then you’re hooked. Ashley’s current list of notoriety not only includes having an art show by, Ms. Catlin, but numerous other showings, the instruction of carefully selected individuals on her methods, the development of a furniture line, the making of a documentary about her work, and collaboration with Alvin Valley on a Duane Reade Eco tote . These totes are the reusable modern vogue that you may see on many New York Sidewalks. The clothing line, NOLA Couture, has commissioned the use of Ashley’s work in an apparel line that is going national. Her paintings and designs are being used for an exclusive collection of Men’s ties, and high end baby wear. As if that weren’t enough, in May 2009, International House in New Orleans is hosting the Audrey Hepburn 80th Birthday Celebration. Sean Ferrer, Hepburn’s son, has requested that Ashley compose a 20’x 20’ signature portrait of Audrey along with ten other separate pieces. “I’m really excited about this,” Ashley says. A quick look through Ashley’s gallery shows that she is top choice for the project due to her pervious portrait work of Hepburn.

This past October, Ashley had a showing as part of the Taste of the Waters Wine and Art Festival where a percentage of the sales from her work went to benefit the Montgomery Area Nontraditional Equestrians (MANE). MANE is a charity that is dedicated to children and adults with emotional, physical, cognitive, and developmental disabilities. She explains, “My heart really goes out to this charity. It changes people’s lives.” To point, she has it all together. Ashley is a powerful woman with a personality that has a soft vulnerable side that fuels her capability to provide us an imaginative view of the world in which we live. She loves the South and frequently returns home from her studio in New Orleans to see all of the fans and collectors in this area who support her and her work. “Thank you all,” she extends. Fellow wine and art enthusiasts alike gathered to satisfy their senses at the First Annual Taste of the Waters Wine & Art Festival. The beautiful setting provided by The Waters set a picturesque backdrop, uncorking a great time for many. With several local artists, specialty food vendors, and over 50 specially selected wines, there was a multiplicity of libations and cookery to satisfy everyone’s taste. Proceeds from the event went to the Joy to Life Foundation, which provides free mammograms for medically underserved women in the tri-county area. Joy Blondheim, along with her husband, Richard, founded The Joy to Life Foundation in 2001 after Joy survived her own personal battle with breast cancer. Upon arrival to the festival, guests were given commemorative wine glasses and brochures, providing a site map and exhibitor information. Inspired by the event, Chef David Bromley created a stunning wine rack ice sculpture, incorporating the Joy to Life Logo – a more than suitable set up for the day’s festivities. Dozens of creative bras submitted by individuals and businesses around the Montgomery Area were on display to raise money for the Joy to Life Foundation. Among the creative submissions were “undivided & un-decided” for the split Auburn/ Alabama home, the gold, purple and green “Mardi Bra”, the famous gator “taking a bite out of

cancer”, and “Double-‘D’elicious” covered in our favorite sweets. Although the bras brought plenty of entertainment and laughter, there was more to come as guests made their way toward alternating booths of wine, art and palate cleansing stations consisting of Betsy’s Cheese straws, loaves of French bread and a huge assortment of cheeses. Wine experts introduced a variety of wines sure to please both new and old connoisseurs alike. Abstract and figurative art pieces, blown, fused and melted glass art, as well as portraits and drawings were all displayed and available for purchase for those looking to add to their collection. For vendors needing a break, a hospitality tent provided the perfect getaway with food and drinks donated by the accommodating sponsors. Meanwhile, two of Montgomery’s most beloved musicians, Lucky and Henry Pugh, set the tone for the festival, performing the best of jazz, blues and soul throughout the day. Their soulful, intricate harmonies provided a cozy soundtrack to the picture perfect weather,
which greeted the event. Lucky has a way of attracting a crowd wherever he plays, and this event was no exception. Legendary jazz musician Henry Pugh continued his tradition of taking requests and playing to the crowd. On this sunny, open-air day, both musicians had attendees settling with their wine and cheese for a picnic in the grass. On site, Barbara Davis sold her famous “pink sky” inspired by the event to the first person who visited her booth. The vivacious, Ashley Longshore, sold several pieces of her art as well. Jeff Varner of Peppertree Steaks N’ Wines had the grill full of barbeque and steak kabobs with people lined up to get a bite. For those looking for Christmas gifts, Sherry Bernie and Gray Collins offered many unique glass pieces and F&M Cigars had a great selection of premium cigars for those looking for a crescendo to the event. The success of the event already has RSVP Montgomery planning for the Second Annual Taste of the Waters!

Singles Holiday Jingle Mix & Mingle When the best, brightest, and most beautiful singles in Montgomery want a Christmas party, RSVP responds! The event planners of RSVP Montgomery hosted an exclusive celebration in early December at the Capital City Club. A lively, sociable mix of young men and women filled the room, all dressed in their finest couture. The tasteful, seasonal décor created a magical atmosphere, highlighted by a gorgeous Christmas tree centerpiece. High atop the RSA building downtown, partygoers enjoyed delectable appetizers of fine fruits (including hand dipped strawberries and lemon squares) and cheeses, Swedish meatballs, and twice baked potatoes, all courtesy of the Club’s master chef. Those seeking sweeter pleasures enjoyed brownies and a succulent variety of cheesecakes. Meanwhile, the dance floor remained abuzz with excitement, courtesy of the sultry, fluid sounds of The Velvet Monkey band. Several male attendees, who swore that they didn’t dance, inevitably found themselves drawn to the dance floor by the irresistible allure of mellifluous music and lovely ladies. As if the fantastic music and food weren’t enough, door prizes were donated by the Montgomery Ballet, Hue Studio, Mellow Mushroom, and Itza Gift Interiors. Everyone in attendance found time to take in Montgomery’s most breathtaking panorama. From on top of the city’s tallest building, the lights of Montgomery formed its own holiday constellation. At the end of the night, many phone numbers were discretely exchanged, and several eager requests for new singles events were added to the waiting list. Smiles were all around from this diverse group who came from across the River Region to be part of this special yuletide celebration.

Valentine’s Day – a celebration of love, lust, like, and secret admiration, right? Well, for many, Valentine’s Day can feel like a minefield where a gift-giving or date-scheduling misstep could tip the scales toward a break-up or, maybe worse, an oft-mentioned example of your lack of romance or commitment. Don’t worry, though: here’s a can’t-miss list of gifts and date ideas.

FAT TUESDAY By Jamie JT” Thompson
Fat Tuesday may not be until February 24th, but the intersection of history, commerce, and conspicuous consumption known as Mardi Gras is already in full swing. January 6th marks the beginning of the “Carnival,” the period of feasting, fun, and furious hangovers that leads up to the final day of revelry, which is the day before Ash Wednesday and the beginning of Lent. The holiday dates back to 1703 in Mobile, Alabama when “mystic societies” (known as “Krewes” in other cities) began organizing Carnival parades and festivities for its members and the public to enjoy. The celebration was exported to New Orleans in 1857 when the Krewe of Comus (inventive revelers that they were) came up with the idea of presenting a parade with elaborate floats, followed by a ball for the Krewe and their guests. Even if you are not a member of a Krewe or have never celebrated Mardi Gras in the past, this year offers an opportunity to attend this unique celebration, whether your intention is historical education or Herculean libation. Many of the celebrations in the River Region are held by local Krewes or charity organizations that present live music (usually a mix of dance and New Orleans style jazz), catered food and crowd giveaways! Picturing a “Girls Gone Wild” infomercial? That’s a matter of personal discretion (if that’s your thing, I can’t stop you), but if you are seeking more subtle and sophisticated pleasures, there is plenty on offer for you as well. To give you a brief refresher course on Mardi Gras, the official colors are Purple (Justice), Green (faith), and Gold (power). “Throws” became customary in the 1870’s and include beads, cups, stuffed animals and the infamous “Moon Pies.” Though celebrated all over, three major cities are known for their Mardi Gras celebrations –

Pensacola, Mobile, and New Orleans. The New Orleans version is perhaps the most popular, serving as a kind of besotted Mecca for college students across the country. Yet each location offers its own unique Mardi Gras pleasures and is worthy of a visit. Pensacola has several Mardi Gras Parades the week before Fat Tuesday, including a daytime and nighttime parade through the streets of historic downtown. The city also sponsors a parade on Pensacola Beach, while popular establishments like The Dock Bar and Grill, Pegleg Pete’s and Quietwater Boardwalk partake in the Mardi Gras festivities. Mobile, originally coined “Boef Gras” or “Fat Beef,” is credited with having the earliest accounts of modern day Mardi Gras. If you choose to visit the birthplace of this famous festival, you will no doubt enjoy the mystic society parades like the Knights of Mobile parade, Monday Nighter Mystics Parade, and the Comic Cowboys Parade. All of these take place the weekend preceding Fat Tuesday. For more information on this year’s events in Mobile, visit www.mobilemardigras.com New Orleans celebrates with parades all day long on Fat Tuesday through the Garden district area of St. Charles Avenue downtown. This is a family-friendly place to observe the parades and enjoy the atmosphere of New Orleans Mardi Gras style. Keep in mind, hotels book up early and streets are blocked off near the festivities, so be prepared. Biloxi is a convenient option (perhaps the only option at this point in the year) for accommodations. It’s not too far of a drive, a consideration that will make the ride home easier after several taxing days of jubilation.
While you’re in the “Big Easy,” visit Longshore Studio Gallery, located at 4848 Magazine Street in New Orleans. Sarah Ashley Longshore has just been named New Orleans Artist of 2008 by New Orleans Magazine! Her work is featured in several motion pictures and has been sold to Hollywood stars, including Penelope Cruz and Salma Hayek. Always amenable to the potential consumer, Ashley will work with you to customize any artwork to your liking. Check out the feature article in this issue of RSVP for more information on this exciting artist who has captured the imagination of the Big Easy. No trip to New Orleans Mardi Gras would be complete without a visit to the French Quarter (for the adult crowd anyway). The clubs feature music, including live bands performing the jazzy sounds of New Orleans with tunes like “Funky Liza” and “When the Saints Go Marching in.” Local Cajun cuisine such as gumbo, New Orleans style sausage sandwiches, and fried chicken can be found almost any place where food is served, and don’t leave town without sampling a King Cake – a delicious bakery creation that is a famed confectionary Mardi Gras tradition. But be careful while eating, some King Cakes carry a little toy baby hidden inside! Whoever gets the slice with the baby gets the honor of hosting next year’s King cake party (or at least, planning next year’s Mardi Gras celebration).

RiverRegionOnline.com A local spin on your online social life Social networking has done to the Address Book what Reality TV has done to the sitcom. Gone are the days of keeping track of a little personal information on your closest friends. Now you collect the entire life of everyone you know, everyone they know, and even people you have never met. Social networking sites like Facebook and MySpace bring out the voyeur in some, the braggit in most, and the competitive nature of all. We’re like children at Easter, frantically grabbing up every friend we can and shoving them in the weighted down basket of pastel colored eggs. Do we really need this many friends? A few years ago, Napster gave us the opportunity to download every song ever recorded for free. Many computer users couldn’t resist the temptation to collect thousands of songs they really didn’t care to hear, just because they were free. Are we doing the same thing with friends - opting for quantity over quality? The point here is not to Debbie Downer you into disconnecting from your networks, but as you make those public vows of friendship, how might they evolve to perhaps, friendships with benefits? As online trends have slowly progressed from AOL to YouTube to social networking sites, we look forward to see what will be the next massive, online water cooler for gathering. What’s hot now? Local. Local. Local. What used to be a “places to go. people to see” world is now developing into a “places you actually go and people you actually see” mindset. Sure it’s intriguing to hear how the valedictorian from your high school, who you haven’t seen in ten years, is now a successful attorney half way across the country making tons of money and living large. Thanks for the update, but what about those faithfully loyal comrades you meet up with every Thursday night at your favorite local watering hole? RiverRegionOnline.com is providing this more meaningful platform for our local area. Structured similar to Facebook, members take their friends to a more “quality” level and reap more benefits. Whether you’re talking about finding the best sushi, this weekend’s street fair, or a reliable handyman, local consumption and communication are personal and originate from local, trusted sources.
the next massive, online water cooler for gathering
The points and rewards system is in essence a “you scratch my back - I’ll scratch yours” kind of set up. Members earn points for providing content and activity to the community, such as posting blogs, writing reviews or inviting friends to join. Points can be used in the “Rewards Shop” for hot products like a Sony Camcorder or services like free web design. Businesses benefit by advertising their popular products as rewards, then asking the buyer to pick the item up in their store. Most importantly, if you’re a business owner, as you add friends and contacts, you’re creating a local network of potential customers. You can join groups to find local residents that might be interested in your products/services and advertise in the Classifieds section. Advertising can also be targeted to specific demographics. Post events, sales and promotions or even menus. You don’t have to be a Facebook junkie or MySpace fanatic to join the local grapevine; you’ve got neighbors, little league teams, and social events. You’ve got opinions, likes and dislikes, and recommendations. Use your voice at RiverRegionOnline.com and get the word out! RiverRegionOnline.com is locally owned and operated by Productive IT, LLC. LOOK:

Man Stroke Woman (Seasons 1 & 2)
(British TV Series, Comedy, 2005-2007) This brilliantly funny UK sketch comedy show ran for two seasons on BBC4, and like many brilliant UK shows (see: “All in the Family,” and most recently, “Life on Mars,”) it is being recast & given a Americanized refit for broadcast here. Hilariously profane (a quality that will no doubt be liberally excised from the Fox-TV version) and masterfully performed by a largely unknown cast, “Man Stroke Woman” chronicles the romantic foibles of young Brits in sixty second skits that manage to be both wildly absurd (an absent minded young father keeps misplacing his infant son) and cleverly observant (an exasperated groom-to-be discovers that wedding-related items are twice as expensive as the exact same non-wedding-related item). Both seasons (six episodes each) are affordably priced on DVD, and available through Amazon.com. We Can Be Heroes (Full Series) (Australian TV Series, Comedy, 2006) One of HBO’s newest comedic imports, “Summer Heights High,” is the latest satiric mockumentary (a style found in Christopher Guest’s films “This Is Spinal Tap” and “Best in Show”) by Aussie writer/actor Chris Lilley. As amusing as that show is, even better is this earlier series chronicling six fictional nominees for “Australian of the Year,” a yearly award highlighting the person who best represents the accomplishments of our brothers and sisters from Down Under. All six main characters (which include an Asian scientist/would-be-thespian named Ricky Wong, and a bratty teenage sponsor of African children named Jaimee) are played by Lilly, and over the six episodes, each 42

character has its own unexpected comedic arc that is well worth seeing to the end. As with “Man Stroke Woman,” make sure the DVD is either Region 0 (all players) or Region 1 (US & Canada) compatible before purchasing.

Friendly Fires – “Jump In the Pool” A stunningly gorgeous slice of 80s-tinged electro-pop by a band of bright young men from Hertfordshire, England, “Jump in the Pool” is a perfect summer-kissed antidote to the cold weather currently sweeping through our fair city. Reminiscent of current popular modern rock bands like The Killers and the Arcade Fire, Friendly Fires’ music also harkens back to the halcyon early days of the genre, and the classic sounds of such bands as New Order and The Cure. Try this track first, and if it moves you, pick up the rest of their highly recommended self-titled debut album.

READ: (Books, etc.) “My Custom Van: And 50 Other Mind-Blowing Essays…” by Michael Ian Black (Nonfiction, Comedic, 2008) The “basic cable superstar” (as the press release describes him) of such shows as “Ed,” “Viva Variety,” and “I Love the 80s” on VH1 provides a series of random nonfiction essays on the most sublimely ridiculous topics ever collected in hardcover. A simple glance through the chapter titles gives you some idea what you’re in for: “An Open Letter to the Hair Stylist Who Somehow Convinced Me to Get A Perm When I Was in Sixth Grade.” “A Series of Letters to a Squirrel.” “What I Would Be Thinking If I Were Billy Joel Driving to a Holiday Party Where I Knew There Was Going to Be a Piano.” If these titles don’t provide at least some glimmer of amusement, then this combination of vulgar and esoteric satire might not be for you. If they do produce a smile (or if you’re a big fan of Dave Eggers), then get thee to Amazon with all speed and pick up a copy.

Mental_Floss (http://mentalfloss.com/) As we exit the holidays, we thus exit the season of the holiday-themed party. If your holiday gatherings held any resemblance to mine, you no doubt encountered your fair share of blowhards who attempted to monopolize the conversation with their allegedly superior intellect. Why not let this be the year that you take the steam out of those twits with your own intriguing little known facts and fascinating arcana? If such a prospect intrigues you, then look no further than this website which collects essays on a variety of fact-intensive, yet innately compelling subjects that often fly in the face of conventional wisdom. A current perusal of the homepage finds both “7 Wildly Successful People Who Survived Bankruptcy,” and a behind-the-scenes look at six things you never knew about “The Brady Bunch.” You likely found plenty of opportunity to feed your belly (I know I did) this holiday season, so why not find a little time to feed your mind as well?

- a look at local sound
Trust Company By Jonalan Wright
“We Won the Lottery!” That is how Kevin Palmer of Trust Company describes the opportunity that they call their life. Kevin Palmer, Jason Singleton, James Fukai, and Eric Salter make up the band. Trust Company is four guys who love to play music and started out right here in the River Region. The journey hasn’t been easy, but the band has seen much success and never forgotten where it all began.
the skills that would change their lives forever. They progressed and molded as 41 Down. The name came in the form of a crossword puzzle answer, “the opposite of 41 down,” which later changed to Trust Company due to the resemblance with other bands on the major scene in 2001 when they signed with Geffen records. Their distinctive sound remains and they still hold on to the name to differentiate loyal fans from the new masses.
In 1994, “three small town rocker guys” from Prattville fought through a slew of local bands in order to find their musical soul. Some may recall an early project such as Ditch or Braswell. During this time, the Millbrook warehouses were the spot for all things music in the Prattville area. Many nights, the guys would spend countless hours practicing and honing
Their first album, The Lonely Position of Neutral, was a hit. Released July 2002, the band was already on the road promoting the album. Fantastic reviews flowed, the album went gold, and the fan base began growing in big ways. They had a list of firsts on the road with the new album: The first time hearing their song on the radio (between Nirvana and some other

big band). It had been played locally on 95.1 the Fox’s Locals only radio show, but to hear it while out on the road was quite another experience. The rush of pride that came along with seeing their video on MTV for the first time after realizing it wasn’t their studio video cassette playing was laughable, but true. It was common for fans to get the wrong tour bus, but when a fan wearing an old 41 Down t-shirt appeared on the other side of the country, they knew then what was happening. The guys attest to the fact that they experienced things that very few people will ever have the opportunity to understand. Keep in mind that these are four humble guys from Prattville. They have seen the U.S. and Europe from a tour bus. They have traveled and performed around such acts as Korn, Puddle of Mud, and Papa Roach. Their track Hover begins in a fashion similar
to a selection by Korn. Brian ‘Head’ Welch from Korn, played Trust Company’s opening and looked stage side to make sure they knew he was playing their tune; a moment of mutual respect and acceptance. Just as memorable, during the Korn Tour in Sacramento, they opened with their first radio single, Downfall, facing a partially empty floor. All at once, the crowd over took security and everyone rushed down to the floor to get a place in the song. It was the first time they understood the power of a radio single, and Kevin vowed, “Don’t ever forget this moment as long as [I] live.” The band welcomed Eric Salter in 2008 to take over for original bassist, Josh Moates, a great source of energy for the band. Eric has a long history with both Kevin and Jason, and had the background in music to be an instant asset to the band. A musical jack of all trades, his addition to the band is much like a duck feather and ink well, creative. It is fitting that he fills the spot, because as he described, he not only knew the music, but he knew the personalities that he would be working with, which is important when living on a tour bus on the road.
“It all feels like a dream still.” It is truly notable to hear these words from a group of local guys. They have indeed seen the world through eyes most of us will never see. Today, they are currently on the road with The Exies and expect to release a new album in 2009, taking their last album, True Parallels, to the next level. They recently played two home shows, one at Off the Wagon, and the other at the River Front Amphitheater. Time on the road becomes grueling, and they remember that their home fan base has been very good to them. When they come home off the road, Trust Company likes to enjoy a cold Coors Light and a meal with family and friends at Miyako, making up for time away. In the end, what is most respectable about the entire Trust Company experience? It is that through all of the fame, recession, and retooling, they never gave up their identity or their home town. They are proud of where they have been and what they have done. The members all agree that if they had the chance, they would do it all over again. It has been worth it. They move right on to discuss the young guys still in the warehouses. That is profound. It is all about music for them. Check out their web page to get tour information and all things Trust Company. www.myspace.com/trustcompany

The Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts (MMFA) is located in the beautiful Wynton M. Blount Cultural Park in the heart of Montgomery. Ideal for hosting wedding receptions, rehearsal dinners, corporate meetings, concerts or any other private events, the Museum offers a variety of indoor and outdoor settings that will make any event a work of art. The facility can accommodate up to 200 people for dinner and 600 for a reception.

The MMFA was founded in 1930 by a group of local artists and patrons, the “Alabama Society of Fine Arts.” In 1960, the MMFA became a department of the City, and in 1988, the new Museum opened in the Cultural Park. In 1993, Ida Belle Young gifted more than 5,000 square feet of gallery space, increasing the Museum’s ability to display contemporary and Regional art from the permanent collection. Since the new Museum was opened in the Cultural Park in 1988, more than one million visitors have enjoyed an array of exhibitions and programs. Today, the museum is free and open to the public, which it serves through tours, outreach programs, adult programs, and studio classes. The Museum’s special events office offers full service event planning, including arrangements for entertainment, flowers, catering, beverage service, and the arrangement of tables, chairs, linens, glassware, tents, and any audio-visual equipment needed. For information and/or to view the facility, please contact Tisha Rhodes at 334.240.4350 or visit w www.mmfa.org
