As the temperature outside begins to rise, so does the desire for a little summer fun! We are finding more reasons to brave the heat, and learning to keep our cool while doing so. With the revitalization of downtown Montgomery underway, excitement and energy has flooded the streets. The sweltering heat is not stopping people from venturing outdoors and some of our events are the proof in the pudding. We partnered with the Riverfront Facilities for the first ever Riverfront Pub Crawl on May 29 and, with approximately 700 attendees, it was a huge success. Our Corks in the Courtyard event brought in more than 300 attendees who all kept their cool as they sampled a diverse selection of wines and explored the residential and retail areas at the A&P lofts. Be sure to check out our “Socially Seen” feature that highlights RSVP Montgomery events. For some of us, dining out can be an event of its own. Every day, the girls at RSVP Montgomery take a vote on where we should eat or which restaurant we are calling for take out! It is a quite a fun ordeal! We narrowed down the choices to our top ten favorite dishes that satisfy our cravings and can’t wait to share them with you! For all things social, including events, fashion trends, who’s who, or cool new music, the team at RSVP Montgomery aspires to be the best and most complete resource for all that is hip and happening. Whether you dine in or dine out, soak in the sun or chill in the air conditioning, prefer jazz or rock-n-roll, there is some summer fun waiting for you. So get out there and never miss an opportunity to RSVP to all Montgomery offers! With warm regards,

The Bag Has It!

by Shannon Fannin & Amanda Morrison

The bright summer sun finds us on the go, requiring a bag that shines brilliantly in both routine and recreation. Some double as on the shoulder storage solutions, while others are less practical, reflecting personal style. No matter your tastes, choosing the right bag is an easy, cost-effective way to update your wardrobe.

Some women are obsessed with handbags and have one in every color, shape and style, changing them daily to match their outfits and moods, while other women prefer the simplicity of a few good handbags they can wear again and again. Defined by these extremes or falling somewhere in the middle, function is the first consideration when choosing this accessory fundamental. Are you a pack rat or prefer traveling light? Determine what you will keep in your handbag and if you carry the kitchen sink, a larger tote or a hobo might come in handy. If you keep only a small wallet, cell phone and lipstick in your bag, you are best suited sporting a swing pack. Next determine if this bag is for everyday use or reserved for certain outfits, dates or locales? These factors will certainly play into the financial justification. However, if you are more concerned with adding interest to your wardrobe and not your account, go for the ultimate splurge.

Size matters, so when shopping in stores bring the basics such as your wallet, cell phone, sunglasses and keys. Place the items inside a few handbags to see if you like the fit.

reply “YES” To transform your outfit with purposeful fashion, consider the hobo bag. Crescent in shape and known for a slouchy posture, you can stand tall knowing youʼre in touch with the trends and your essentials. This stylish design is the ultimate in practicality and its popularity with Hollywood starlets have garnered it a must have for trendsetters. This oversized look is best for the tall and thin, but with many versions in size, there is a hobo to compliment any figure.

For the unsurpassed in day to night transitions, consider the classic clutch. Its sleek modern version presents enough room for convenience items and the utmost in iconic fashion. In hand or under the arm, this design is well suited for pear shapes as eyes are drawn towards your amazing sense of style instead of your hips. Better yet, stash a clutch in your hobo bag so you can head straight to business after hours.

If youʼre a woman on the go, consider the increasingly popular swing pack. This wardrobe worthy article is perfect for light-weight maneuvering when shopping or traveling, and easily transitions for a night out. Its manageable size and flexible design give it versatility in function. This style offers a front zip closure and its adjustable straps allow it to be worn traditionally or across the body, so if youʼre vertically challenged, this line is perfect for giving the illusion of height.

Not so cute is the overstuffed bag that you can’t zip or fasten. Nobody wants the dreaded spill over! Select a bag that keeps everything you need to accomplish your goals and look fabulous in the process. For the ultimate in personal expression, find an eye-popping color that matches your modern vibe. Yellow is a hot color this season or consider a mainstay metallic that transitions well into fall. If you are less daring, look for handbags in colors that will work with the rest of your wardrobe. Black or brown is always a safe bet. You can achieve the best of both worlds by spicing up the neutral. Look for bold stitching on the exterior or select a style with funky hardware. Texture also plays a role as you discover audacious alligator skin is just what you need to replace your conventional herringbone fabric. To flatter both your ensemble and silhouette, try on several different shapes in a collection.

When browsing for your summer bag enjoy finding one as likable as you. While it may be hard to find clothing that fits you just right, a handbag is usually a one-size fits all! Whether running errands or corporate meetings, explore what makes your ideal arm-candy.

20 machismo ways to send her running! by Janine Schoudel

Like Law and Order: The following story is fictional and does not depict any actual person or event and not meant for all audiences. Any similarities to actual persons or events is purely coincidental; despite the fact that it sounds exactly like something you did last week. The humor impaired, the hypersensitive, the over-moussed and the under-buttoned should turn the page, quick!

Gentlemen, please… Ring tones like “I like big butts.” The weirder the cell phone ring, the more annoying the person. Purchasing a convertible at middle age. Your stock does not go up, she doesn’t care whether you have a retractable roof or not, and it really messes up your comb-over! Sending emails and texts to her friends after the break-up. You will never convert her girlfriends to your way of thinking or reverse the break-up. Talking about yourself in the third person. This makes you a first person zero. Reminiscing about how great of a high school athlete you use to be if only you had caught that break. If you were that great you would have the jersey and the ring! 14

Screaming out “Freebird.” Sorry, just because you know all the words does not make you musically inclined and the lead singer is paying attention to the hot female in the front row anyways. Dropping weights at the gym to draw attention to yourself. URGH! If you cannot place them back on the rack, why lift them at all? Texting 5 times in less than a minute. Hold your horses Tonto, turbo texting does not make the other respond any quicker. Just shows you’re needy or a stalker. Starting a sentence by saying “With all due respect,” is the best possible way to let someone know you are preparing to impart loads of disrespect.

Telling your companion “You’re far better than my ex.” Comparison can sometimes be the most offensive gesture you can show your partner. Expressing your opinions with bumper stickers. They are only 5 % as clever as you think they are. Marking an e-mail “high priority.” Just because Bill Gates dreamed up a button doesn’t mean you should press it. Pick up the phone. Writing a love poem in the first 3 days of dating. Her hair might indeed remind you of the morning rays of sun. But Romeo, those rays may fade, and there’s no reason to leave a paper trail.

Buying all the equipment after two lessons. Holster that credit card until you’re certain the novelty of wakeboarding or competitive birdwatching won’t wear off. Being overly polite. Social pleasantries should be dispensed with grace. Saying “bless you” after each of seven successive sneezes makes you an automation, not a gentleman. Finding exact change. Picking through your pocket lint for 13 cents isn’t helping the barista churn through the morning rush any faster. Do everyone a favor and stockpile your coinage at home. Overvaluing your wisdom. Just because you understand the particulars of the global currency market doesn’t mean you should share them. Saying, “Enough about me…” is often the best conversation starter.

Screaming at the customer-service rep. Actually, check that: Go ahead and scream. Just make sure there’s a method to your madness. You’re mad at the company, and you’re this close to taking your business elsewhere. Close talking. Even though you don’t have simple chronic halitosis and think this is a great way to prove it, you will still end up with simple chronic go-home-alone-itosis. Sending an angry e-mail. Along with drunk-dialing your ex and drinking appletinis, this one fits in the category of things you will always, without fail, regret. Here’s a rule of thumb: The more bridges you’ll burn, the longer you should let that e-mail smolder in your drafts folder.

by Amanda Morrison Summer is no longer reserved for family vacations. Research shows that solo travel is on the rise as singles are whisking away to new experiences and the long held stigma of leisurely vacations alone. This endorsement is surprising considering most of us are junkies for human interaction. I once defined humiliation as dining alone publicly, but now more adventurous with a job requiring travel, I completely understand why braver individuals have been doing this for years. Navigating through the unknown with no colleague in tow is a rare opportunity for introspection and selfdiscovery, not to mention an occasion to experience your choice destination exactly the way you want. travel can be the ultimate in self-indulgence; you can go at your own pace and best of all, no apologies needed if you get lost or choose a bad restaurant. Being alone makes you more aware of what’s going on around you, and for me, revealed a comedy of metaphors concerning the relationship between air travel and the single life. Just for fun, here are tips on flying solo that lend to applications for living solo.

Travel Light Anyone who travels often by plane will recommend the one bag trip whenever possible. Packing the minimum will bring you maximum ease as you breeze through check-in and bypass the baggage carousel. Also, safety increases as your energy is spent taking in new scenery instead of your luggage set.

Get on Board Experts say this saves you time when packing, of that I am less convinced. For single women, the elimination process can seem timely and painstaking as anxiety sets in when choosing coordinates centered on a select pair of shoes. However, the benefits outweigh the fashion dilemma, and what better incentive to take less than shopping in a new town. To shrink your suitcase permanently, check out the tips on www.onebag.com { My favorite announcement when awaiting a flight is the “please do not leave your baggage unattended” warning. In terms of emotions, my initial thought was “don’t worry… I take mine everywhere I go”. While airports do not warn against emotional baggage, as singles we tend to carry unnecessary cargo into our next relationship. The first thing we do when returning from a trip is to rid our bags of dirty laundry, so maybe we should follow the same discipline with ourselves; unpack our baggage, sort it out and look forward to the next journey. }

Flying the friendly skies is budget friendlier in the summertime when gas prices mysteriously rise during vacation season. Many airlines have great deals and you can fly to top destinations for a fraction of what it would cost to drive. Even more convenient, Montgomery has direct flights to fun towns including Charlotte and Dallas and when booked far enough in advance, roundtrip tickets can be found for less than $100. To shop multiple airlines at once, check out www.expedia.com to find your optimum route. { I always appreciate the pilots who keep passengers informed while in-flight. Hearing the courtesy “we’re twentieth in line for takeoff” is much better than wondering why in the world we’re not moving. From warning us of turbulence ahead, to informational greetings- the pilot holds the answers to what makes a flight smooth, bumpy, on-time or late. As singles, how often are we listening to our internal pilots? Sometimes it comes through loud and clear and others a muffled message, but frequently traveling our inner voice keeps us from circling the airport getting nowhere. In tune with ourselves, we are better equipped to avert a crash.}

Live in the Moment Here’s your chance to be completely selfish and not think twice. You’re on vacation in a new place, the office isn’t calling (hopefully) and you can act on every available whim. Always wanted to surf? Sign up for a class and catch a wave without the land dwelling disapproval of a companion. There’s no quarrelling after that trek across town reveals the museum is already closed; it’s your own day to salvage and returns a great story. Researching the area will provide you with a host of options and once you reach your destination, ask locals for their opinion. Stay in an area with plenty of foot traffic and nearby attractions. This helps both your budget and your agenda. When choosing somewhere to eat, try a local spot and select something you would not find at home. A great resource for any craving is www.urbanspoon.com and is also a free app for the iPhone. Avoid advertising your tourism, walking around with an open map. Instead get a GPS or borrow one from a friend. This saves you time and gives you confidence that you are headed in the right direction. You may not remember how you got there, but the good news is you don’t have to. You’re in the moment. {I’ve often wished there was a GPS for life. Program in your credentials for a job or mate and like magic the perfect plan is routed. I especially wish for the recalculating feature when we go off course! The truth is GPS systems aren’t correct 100% of the time and neither are we. The best thing we can do is live each day to the fullest and realize happiness lies within the quest. Who’s to say our route is optimal for the journey, but at least we can say we’ve been there.} With or without the evidentiary t-shirt, when you are alone traveling the unfamiliar you become most familiar with yourself. If you feel like getting away, don’t let the lack of a partner stop you. The world is your oyster… but if you prefer lobster, I hear they’re great in Maine.

HOT FUN IN THE SUMMERTIME by Shannon Fannin

Ahhhhhhh Summer! Summer! Summer! Could be said 1,000 times and never tire of saying it! Summer extends to us moments and memories, perfect settings, perfect friends and family, perfect gatherings. Nothing makes summer more fun than backyard events like a lively barbeque, a low-key but festive garden party, or a for the really daring, an all out, take no prisoners, outdoor party just for the kids! Talk about off the chain! So grab your favorite cool beverage and letʼs look at some ideas for those hot summer nights!

Barbeque Who isn’t down for a good barbecue? What better way to relax in the sun, hang with family and friends, and enjoy some of the best grilling that ever touched your lips? First and foremost in planning your event is to plan your menu. While traditional barbecue fare tends toward hot dogs, hamburgers, and potato salad, there’s no reason you can’t grill shrimp brochettes, bell peppers and eggplant, lamb shish kabobs, or cilantro-and-lime-marinated chicken, either. Just make sure you can prepare everything ahead of time with a minimum of fuss. You want to enjoy being outdoors, too. Don’t forget the beverages! Serve plenty of ice and cold drinks such as beer, soda, iced tea, and bottled water. No matter how high the thermometer rises, there are always die hard Java drinkers who will be looking for a steaming pot of coffee or perhaps Iced Coffee Latte.And finally, don’t forget to provide plenty of cubed-cheese, beef bites, diced fresh veggies, potato chips, pretzels, and other appetizers hungry bellies can happily munch on while they’re waiting for the meat to be cooked to perfection. Provide enough picnic tables and chairs for everyone. You’ll also want tables for the prepared food, for the drinks, and for the uncooked food and utensils, next to the grill. Cover the picnic tables with plastic or cloth tablecloths, both for looks and easy clean-up. Disposable flatware, cups, and plates are perfect for such events. No one likes to do dishes after a party. Provide trash cans in convenient locations for guests to throw away their utensils when they are finished eating or drinking.

Garden Party

Donʼt Forget the Kids!

A garden party is simply a party or gathering held outside in your garden, patio or other outdoor space. There are a variety of reasons for this type of gathering. Set the scene outside with seasonal decor, appetizers, beverages, music and lighting. Use the following instructions to throw a successful garden party.

When planning a more family oriented party, have some party games prepared for the event. Volleyball, badminton and horseshoes are traditional outdoor games and are relatively easy to set up. Plenty of liquids are mandatory for a kids party. You will be amazed how much fluid children can go through!

Invite guests with a themed invitation. Specify a dress code if desired, or leave it blank for a range of casual outdoor attire. Tidy and manicure the garden. Mow the lawn, pull any errant weeds and plant new blooming flowers in the beds. Wipe down any tables and chairs, and clean any upholstered furniture. Set up umbrellas and shade for a daytime party, and outside lighting for an evening party. Use fairy lights or paper lanterns around patio umbrellas, and set out lanterns, candles or torches. Decide on food themes and serving styles. Buffets work best for mingling, but require slightly more food per person than a plated, served meal. Appetizers and cocktails suffice for nonmeal party times, such as mid-afternoon or late evening party. Designate an outdoor bar area, with pitchers of mixed drinks as well as easy-access bottles. Use real wine glasses and barware, or clear nonbreakable plastic. Prepare food in advance and store inside the house until moments before guests are expected to arrive. Move speakers outside to play classic jazz or other subtle music.

Relay races give new meaning to friendly competition. Kids learn that team work, good energy, and lots of laughs are as much the prize as coming in first! Classic Relay Races Grab a group and team up for some rambunctious relay fun. Kooky Themes Kids will be laughing so hard that they won’t have time to think about winning these relays. Let’s Go to the Races Try an obstacle course for indoors or outside, or an icy challenge on skates.

Summer is over within the blink of an eye! Whatever the chosen venue, the key is great times, laughter and cherishing the crazy memories we carry with us!

Sangria INGREDIENTS • 1 Bottle of red wine • 1 Lemon cut into wedges • 1 Orange cut into wedges • 1 Lime cut into wedges • 2 Tbsp sugar • Splash of orange juice or lemonade • 2 Shots of gin or triple sec (optional) • 1 Cup of raspberries or strawberries (may use thawed or frozen) • 1 Small can of diced pineapples (with juice) • 4 Cups ginger ale DIRECTIONS: Pour wine into a large pitcher and squeeze the juice wedges from the lemon, orange and lime into the wine. Toss in the fruit wedges (leaving out seeds if possible) and pineapple then add sugar, orange juice and gin. Chill overnight. Add ginger ale, berries and ice just before serving. If you’d like to serve right away, use chilled red wine and serve over lots of ice. However, remember that the best Sangrias are chilled around 24 hours in the frig. - allowing the flavors to really marinate into each other.

Grilled Steak Pinwheels INGREDIENTS • 2 flank steaks (1 pound each), trimmed • 1/2 pound sliced bacon, cooked and crumbled • 1 cup finely chopped fresh mushrooms • 1 cup finely chopped green onions • 1/4 cup finely chopped fresh basil • 2 tablespoons minced fresh chives DIRECTIONS: 1. Pound flank steaks on each side. Combine bacon, mushrooms, onions, basil and chives; spread evenly over steaks. Roll the meat up and secure with skewers or wooden picks. Cut each roll into 1/2- to 3/4-in. slices and secure with a wooden pick or skewer. 2. Grill over hot heat for 4-6 minutes per side or until meat reaches desired doneness. Remove picks before serving.

Missyʼs Candied Walnut Gorgonzola Salad INGREDIENTS • 1/2 cup walnut halves • 1/4 cup sugar • 3 cups mixed greens • 1/2 cup dried cranberries • 1/2 cup crumbled Gorgonzola cheese • 1 tablespoon raspberry vinaigrette • 1 tablespoon white vinegar • 1 tablespoon olive oil DIRECTIONS: 1. Place walnuts and sugar in a skillet over medium heat, stirring constantly until the sugar dissolves into a light brown liquid and coats the walnuts. Remove walnuts from skillet, and spread them out on a sheet of aluminum foil to cool. 2. Place in a large salad bowl the mixed greens, cranberries, cheese, vinaigrette, vinegar, and olive oil. Toss gently; add candied walnuts, and toss again.

When the A&P holds an event in Cloverdale, it is always a cause for celebration. When you add RSVP, City Loft Corporation, and Derk’s Filet & Vine, it turns into a lovely Montgomery afternoon mix and mingle that no one will forget. A cloudless blue sky greeted all those attended the Corks in the Courtyard soiree on June 11th. An extravagant assortment of fine wines were there for attendees to sample. Its excellent participating vendors included International Wines, Alabama Crown Distributing, Grass Roots Wines, Ingenium Wines and MBC-United Distributing. For those who found something to suit their taste, Derk’s Fillet and Vine offered discounts on all wines sampled. Other participants of the event included the A&P Lofts, Amplify Salon & Spa, Christine’s Feathered Nest, Clay Metal & Stone, Derk’s Filet & Vine, The Gazebo, Ashley Gilbreath Interior Design, LEON LOARD™ Oil Portraits, K&M Imports, Nancy Paterson’s Bistro, Yesteryear Jewelry, Y’s Up at The A&P. Door prizes from the participating stores were given out to lucky attendees throughout the event. To set the mood just right in the courtyard was a jazz musician of great local reknown, Henry Pugh. Henry has performed for over fifty years in the River Region, including an acclaimed current stint at Sous La Terre. If there weren’t already enough to do and see, attendees of the free event were also treated to complimentary hair and skin consultations. Patrons were also given the unique opportunity to observe the intricate portrait painting techniques by a Leon Loard™ instudio portrait artist. This was a particularly fitting activity for a night that was itself a work of art!

No one ever forgets the first day they take a cruise in their car at age 16, yet for Dakin Hill, this cruise had a whole new meaning. On her Sweet Sixteen, with the help of RSVP Montgomery, Dakin’s dream of an unforgettable night came into full blossom on the decks of the Harriott II. As the guests arrived, each was given his or her own special VIP tags for the exciting night ahead. Each level of the boat had been transformed, offering its own unique pleasures and surprises. The first level was designated a “sweets only” level. With an overflowing candy station, hand-scooped ice cream, and a polka dot cake, this deck provided a little something to delight any sweet tooth. Vibrant pink, purple and tiffany blue colors abounded throughout the room, as well as on the delicious polka dot and striped cake by Cake Designs. The candy station made up of a colorful, variety of sweets provided a feast for the eyes, as well as the taste buds. Equally mouth watering was the hand-scooped ice cream of Venice Gelato. Flavors of mango, cookies and cream, and strawberry helped guests “chill out,” as did the Hershey’s kiss shaped ice sculpture by David Bromley. The teens also found ample opportunity to rock out to Guitar Hero, before venturing upstairs to the 2nd level to hear a variety of live music, courtesy of fantastic local songsmith, Jonathan Bloom. After regaining their energy and appetite through the exciting sounds, the rejuvenated guests finally made their way up to the top deck to test their dance moves with music spun by the masterful Fontaine Entertainment. As if the other entertainments weren’t already enough, partygoers soaked in the breathtaking Riverfront views all night as the boat made its travels. To conclude the night, guests were treated to tiffany blue boxes bearing “Dakin and Co.” with a sweet treat inside as well as monogrammed lollipops. As for Dakin, the smile on her face said all you needed to know about this magical night which would leave behind memories that will never sail away!

Riverfront

PubCrawl

When citizens of the River Region gather along with RSVP to celebrate the continued revitalization of downtown Montgomery, the result is one of the most incredible outdoor parties the capital city has ever seen! Thousands of attractive young Montgomerians, dressed in their summer fineries, descended downtown as the sun set on May 29th for the first Riverfront Pub Crawl. A trolley car awaited them like a private chariot, circling throughout the downtown area to whisk them away to one of the fine bars and eateries selected to participate. Wristbands heralded a night’s entertainment that would be long and varied. Coupon books sold with the wristbands assured that a night of fun and surprises would be easy on the pocketbook. The evening’s adventure began with margaritas over the water on the Harriott II. During the course of the next several hours, partygoers would find time to enjoy Dreamland’s authentic southern barbeque, along with assorted other tasty morsels at Silver Spoon. A sneak preview of the fantastic new Alley BAR was one of the evenings many highlights, with enthusiastic patrons enjoying this special opportunity to see Montgomery’s coolest new bar before the official opening. There is so much to do and see, including live country music and a free tour of the Hank Williams Museum, that by the end of the night, happy attendees enthused that they couldn’t wait until the second crawl, held July 2nd. Closing the night was a “Birdcage”-style show at Club 322 that produced wild smiles, dancing, and raucous delight among the standing room only crowd. Truly, RSVP’s Riverfront Pub Crawl continues to be one of the true must-attend events of summer in the River Region. Wristbands are on sale now for the next event on August 21. We will see you there!

Rooftop

Pool Party On the hottest one this year to date, even the weather was an ideal accessory for RSVP Montgomery’s first Rooftop Pool Party at the Renaissance hotel. This downtown treasure hosted fabulous guests who were only upstaged by the view of the night skyline. Pre-registered friends and last-minute liaisons lined the door to receive their event wristbands which gave access to the pool and spa areas, food displays and an evening of fun. The sounds of local band, Bullet Proof Marshmallows, provided an upbeat reggae feel to this island party nestled in the heart of downtown. The enthusiastic team from the Renaissance gave first class treatment, opening doors and friendly faces to all who were there. With one sip of the delicious pina coladas, complete with umbrella and pineapple slices, you were whisked away to the tropics with all your local friends. The lobby of the spa housed the invitation for relaxation along with scrumptious shrimp cocktail, veggie display and perfectly seasoned chicken skewers.

Those never before having the pleasure were allowed the chance to tour the impressive spa area. Placid tubs for soaking were instantly bubbled with a press of the switch. Calming areas allow for soothing meditation and the loungers are as plush and comfy as the spa robes. Best of all, admission to the RSVP party included twenty “spa dollars” to be used on any Tuesday – Thursday of your choice. Sunset brought forth the dramatic view as night fell on Montgomery, giving guests the perfect excuse to stay a little longer and enjoy another round. This evening was so much fun, plans are already in the works for the next Rooftop Pool Party, only this time the laid back luau theme will be traded for lively Latin dancing mixed with the perfect salsa beats.

Make Plans to attend the next rooftop pool party on July 15 at 6:30pm.

The Alabama Shakespeare Festival is experiencing a youth movement. With its brand new play, Beehive: The Musical, starting July 10th, the ASF is abuzz with the organized frenzy that accompanies the run up to each stellar new production. Exuberant, youthful voices abound as rehearsals begin for this music-infused creation, directed by Geoffrey Sherman. Created by Larry Gallagher, Beehive features classic WW W 60s . Atunes S F from . N great E T girl groups and artists such as Tina Turner, The Supremes, Aretha Franklin, Dusty Springfield, The Chiffons, and many more classic artists than time and space permit to list here. As is always the case with ASF productions, the cast of Beehive emerges from performers from throughout the country. Two of its starring performers, Terita Redd (playing the role of ‘Gina’ in Beehive) and Ginger Bess (playing the role of ‘Pattie’), are from Washington, D.C and Utah, respectively. Both expressed great excitement at the opportunity to join another world-class production at the Alabama Shakespeare Festival.

“I have heard so many good things from other performers about the Alabama Shakespeare Festival,” Ms. Bess remarks. “How well they treat their actors, how professional they are, and the quality of their productions…” Ms. Redd reports a similarly stellar impression of the ASF prior to coming here: “Well, I have a friend who did Beehive in 2002 at [ASF], and she said that she 8 0had0 such . 8 a4 wonderful 1 . 4 2 time 7 3 there. She said the people were great to work with and great to work for.” These words of praise from the young actors should come as no surprise to those familiar with the glowing worldwide reputation of the Alabama Shakespeare Festival. Not only is it the largest regional theatre in the Southeast, ASF is the sixth largest Shakespeare Festival in the world based on attendance. Proclaimed the State Theatre of Alabama in 1977, the ASF has attracted more than three million visitors. The visitors have not only come from all 50 states, they have also traveled from more than 60 foreign countries.

As for the performers at the various ASF productions, all are professionals who belong to the Actors’ Equity Association, the actor’s union. As noted earlier, they hail from throughout the country, with many coming to Montgomery from New York, Chicago, and Los Angeles. Like the facility that welcomes them, the actors who perform here are among the elite theatre performers in the world. In fact, ASF’s acting graduates have included a Tony Award winner (Norbert Leo Butz) and an Emmy Award winner (Michael Emerson). Behind the scenes of each new production lies a thriving industry all its own. All the sets, props, and costumes are handmade. In fact, most everything you see onstage is hand crafted by artisans who work behind the scenes. Hidden behind the stages in the building are shops where all these things (costumes, wigs, hats, props, and sets) are handsomely constructed. Knowing this, is it any wonder that ASF has an economic impact on the region of more than twenty million dollars a year, and over 1,000 jobs? The ASF’s impact is more than simply monetary, however. The Alabama Shakespeare Festival has a huge impact on up-and-coming young actors through its Camp Shakespeare and Broadway South theatre classes (to name just two) and young writers through its Young Southern Writers competition, which results in the reading of three plays each year created by budding regional writers. Yes, the youth movement is in full force at the Alabama Shakespeare Festival, and the buzz is resonating worldwide. Come check out Beehive: The Musical, as it runs from July 10th to August 2nd on the Festival Stage, and experience the joyful ‘hum’ for yourself.

How did where you grew up influence your career?

I grew up in a small town in Brigham City, Utah. It was a very musical place to live. Everyone there played the piano, sang or danced. When I was 7, I begged my mom for piano lessons--luckily my piano teacher lived next door. Later, my choir teacher helped me find my voice, and I got a scholarship in musical theatre at Weber State University.

Is this your first visit to the South?

This will be my first time in Alabama. I have lived and performed in the south before. I was in Newport News, Virginia for quite awhile as well as Winston-Salem, North Carolina.

What artists have inspired you in your work?

Beethoven is a huge influence on me…I am a huge fan of rock music. Ann Wilson from the band Heart is one of the first voices that I really admired…I also have admired Rosemary Clooneyʼs warm voice and Judy Garland in the way she always carried such a strength and softness in her acting and singing.

What do you look forward to experiencing while you are here?

I am excited to see fireflies again. Summers in Utah are usually dry and brown--so it will be nice to be somewhere green and humid for a change…I plan on revisiting southern food, as well as enjoying the relaxed southern pace.

Tell us a bit about your background.

I am from Washington D.C. where I attended The Duke Ellington School of the Arts. Then I attended Fisk University in Nashville, where I received my Bachelor Of Music Degree. I also attended Aims University in Graz, Austria.

Where you have you performed?

I have been on Broadway and have done First National Tours of several Broadway shows. I have also done background vocals for different artists, and was a featured artist on the soundtrack for the film Hairspray.

Besides performing, what else would you like to do while you are in Montgomery?

I would love to visit where Dr. Martin Luther King lived when he was young, and the church where the three little young girls were killed. I would also like to go to other places that could help me learn more about my history.

BRANDON BERREY Born and raised in Montgomery, Brandon Berrey embodies the spirit of art in the capital city. He graduated from Troy University in Advertising and Graphic Design, and became one of seven Southeast art students to study abroad with the Nature Art and Life League in Venice, France. In that same year, Brandon founded the Fallen Heroes Foundation after September 11 to raise money for the fire fighters families after the tragedy. In fact, one of his paintings created in honor of the firefighters was reproduced as a poster and sold by the Alabama Red Cross and featured on CNN. Brandon later opened Berrey Art and Design, and began his work as Artist and Illustrator for the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources. Brandon culls a great deal of his inspiration from his father, Bucky Berrey, a renowned place kicker under “Bear” Bryant who went on to sign with the Atlanta Falcons. Now, along with running his own art business and exploring the outdoors through his work with the Conservation Department, Brandon is also an avid kayaker, canoer, and all around outdoorsman, even teaching a hiking class for women called “Becoming an Outdoor Woman.” He also writes, with his poetry nationally published and awarded. Even with such an arduous schedule, Brandon still has time for his most important work – his family. With his wife of five years April and son Braxton, Brandon has overcome the stigma of starving artist and gone on to contribute his art and dedication to the great outdoors worldwide, through his strong faith in Christ.

REGINA BERRY Improving Montgomery one neighborhood at a time may seem like a daunting task to some, but Regina Berry gladly accepts the challenge! As Program Director for BONDS (Building Our Neighborhoods for Development and Success), Regina steps outside her comfort zone daily to teach others what her parents taught her - the power of “self”. Regina received a B.S. in Health Promotion from Troy University in 1998, and she has since completed her Master’s degree in Public Administration at Troy’s Montgomery campus. She is currently working towards her second Master’s in Adult Education. Regina works hard to integrate values where good models may be scarce, hope where it may be hard to come by, and education that bonds neighbors together to become a better and more informed part of their community! For example, Regina labors to network each neighborhood association in our area through the city’s E-notification service. She also finds time to serve for Montgomery Crimestoppers, Community Council, Red Ribbon Campaign, Envision 2020 & The Family Sunshine Center. Her kids are all of the 4-legged variety: a German Shepherd named Duchess and a miniature dachshund named Peanut. Regina loves being a part of the “New Progressive Montgomery,” and we’re glad she’s a part of it!

FELICIA LONG Attorney Haskell, Slaughter, Young & Gallion, LLC Got a dispute? Don’t take the law into your own hands...you take them to court! That’s where Felicia Long steps in. As a Civil litigation and insurance defense attorney for Haskell, Slaughter, Young & Gallion, LLC in Montgomery, Felicia represents a diverse client base and enjoys helping both people and businesses alike resolve their differences. This Auburn graduate (and Top 5 Miss Auburn finalist!) progressed to the Thomas Goode Jones School of Law, where she received many awards and her Juris Doctor in 2003. Felicia has broadened her 13 years in the legal field by participating in other activities such as the Junior League, Frazer UMC Board of Stewards, Britton YMCA Board of Directors, and serving as 1st Vice President of LaFete Mystic Society! Having already worked with some of the most well respected firms and attorneys in our state, you are bound to hear more about this lady in the future! Montgomery is Felicia’s hometown; she resides here with her husband, Bobby Long, and their Yorkshire Terrier, Samson. The Longs love the Capital city, and being centrally located to Birmingham, Atlanta & the beach - who wouldn’t? Seems to be a unanimous verdict! JULY/AUGUST 2009 RSVP 37

This 36-year old former U.S. Marine (‘93-’01) graduated from Lee High School and Carver Creative and Performing Arts Center right here in Montgomery. ALLYSON RAE Since childhood, Allyson Rae has had an obsession with the weather. Born in Pittsburgh, Allyson followed the same “get it yourself” approach she saw her parents put into action. After enrolling in prestigious Penn State University, Rae joined the male-dominated Meteorology Department there. While there, she worked with numerous student run news programs and interned with the ABC affiliate, WTAE, in Pittsburgh. After graduation from Penn State, Rae started her career at KNOE-TV 8 in Monroe, Louisiana, and it wasn’t long before Alabama’s capital city came calling. As most avid news watchers already know, Rae can now be seen on Montgomery’s own WSFA 12 News and FOX News at Nine. Yet Rae still remembers spending countless hours in her school’s meteorology department dubbing tapes, then walking through eight inches of snow to the post office in the hopes that the news director would give them a look. But it is through such turmoil that the competitive nature of the business takes form, and for all her years of persistence, Rae has a place she can call home and weather she can enjoy. With WSFA, Allyson has the opportunity to travel the area, meeting the people and seeing places that make up the mosaic that is our River Region. “I’m obsessed with the South’s warm weather,” she enthuses. “I’ll take hundred degree days over scraping five inches of snow off my car anyday!”

KEVIN BROCK Kevin Brock is like a good neighbor: always there when you most need him! This US Air Force veteran retired from a Law Enforcement career in 2005 and became a State Farm Agent in Montgomery in 2007. Kevin says opening his agency has allowed him to stay in the “people” business, where he is able to build relationships and offer great products at great prices which make for happy clients! This Troy University Graduate specializes in financial services and offering clients “peace of mind” no matter what the economy. Being a single dad of two great kids (Jacob & Holly) gave him the inspiration to strive for success. When he remarried, he knew his wife Lori was the perfect compliment to an already great family. Kevin also serves as Music Minister for Snowdoun Baptist Church, and he continues to teach Criminal Justice part-time at Judson College and Faulkner State Community College. The family enjoys raising horses including Percherons on their farm in South Montgomery and puts God #1 in their lives. Kevin is also a Christian artist with a new CD on the way in early 2010. “Seek ye first the Kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things will be added unto you...” Sounds like a plan for success, one our good neighbor Kevin Brock practices daily.

WILL BENEFIELD Another Montgomery native, Will Benefield learned from his father the value of using his time wisely and maintaining a staunch work ethic. After graduating high school from Trinity, Will achieved his degree in Marketing at Auburn University. He began his employment career with local entrepreneurs like Jim Wilson and The Trotman Company, Will started his own company, Benefield Properties Incorporated. Yet after being diagnosed with stage one B Cell Lymphoma, Will’s career took a backseat to the demands of his own health. For two years, Benefield endured regular treatments which kept him out of the office. During this time away, Will resumed creating art, a passion that began at the age of nine when he sold his first sculpture in “The Little House” shop. Now he works in wood and clay, sculpting faces, angels, and fish, some of his most popular designs. He even has more functional work, such as chairs and tables, constructed from reclaimed wood from around the world. Benefield’s work can be bought at various galleries across Alabama, as well as through his website, WillBenefield.com. Will also works on the board of directors for the Montgomery Auburn Club and raises funds for the American Cancer Society. With the encouragement of his wife Jill, and the church congregation at Frazer United Methodist, juggling real estate, community work, family life, and a deep passion for art are just another day for this outstanding Montgomerian. If you have any inclination to be seen - or even check out the latest scene - in Montgomery then you’ve probably already been to the Alley Bar. The newest bar downtown has been hotter than the black top this summer. “We have already had several nights bigger than we ever had at Bar 51,” owner Mike Watson noted just a couple of weeks after opening. Watson owned Bar 51 in Auburn for a couple of years before turning his attention to the Alley Bar, and the long time local architect considers this venture one of the most enjoyable of his professional career. “This is perhaps the most intriguing project I’ve ever tackled, because I have been deeply involved in the design, development, construction, furnishing, marketing, and now as the owner / operator of the establishment.”

42

RSVP JULY/AUGUST 2009

Watson roughly describes the Alley Bar style as industrial chic. “Taking the original building materials; brick, wood, steel, and combining them with a contemporary setting,” explains Watson. Recycled manganese plates around the outer bottom of the bar stretch nearly the length of the establishment. Watson salvaged those from Montgomery’s Sable Steel, where they were basically lying on the ground by a fence to prevent weed growth. Other elements came from a little farther away. Tables in the elevated lounges were constructed from turn of the century furniture dollies found in San Francisco, and you can rest your martini on recycled Kentucky whiskey barrels in the back

center of the bar. But don’t worry, nothing looks too extravagant to spill some of the eight beers on tap on every now and then, except maybe the artwork on the walls by renowned local artist Susan Starr. Perhaps the most unique element of the Alley Bar is the shot room, a glassed in area designated to sample various liquors and concoctions at near freezing temperatures. (It’s also a good spot to desweat after a Biscuits game.) Patrons don faux fur coats if they wish and down shots out of frozen shot glasses that literally melt in your hand if you think about it too long. The shot room reaches Frankensteinian levels as the multi-colored shots are served from laboratory beakers, cylinders, and flasks. The recipes are “a secret, but the main ingredient is alcohol,” jokes a grinning Watson.

Check out the Dyson power blades in the restrooms. Supposedly they blast out air at 400 miles per hour.

For those looking for something other than a buzz, the Alley Bar offers both eclectic and traditional food options like chicken salad sandwiches and Italian Panini’s. Or get a little adventurous and try the smoked oysters from Alaska and “tapas items that you might expect at a bar in Barcelona,”according to Watson. And we almost forgot, canned Vienna sausages, seriously.

The vision for the Alley Bar began in 1974 when Watson was researching his thesis in Architecture at Auburn University. He incorporated what was then a novel concept of “adaptive re-use” in his thesis, essentially turning a historic Montgomery railway structure into an entertainment venue. Alley Bar encompasses 4000 square feet of space on the ground floor of the historic Anderson Block Building (built in 1881). The structure was originally a warehouse for flour, meal, and grain. Now, almost 130 years later, the Alley Bar is perhaps the final catalyst for vibrant nightlife in downtown Montgomery. “It’s the first business in The Alley identified purely as an entertainment venue and will support the many restaurants coming to the area,” says Watson, referring to the newest additions downtown. “It’s in the center of The Alley and hopefully will be the hub of activity.” And if you want to dry your hands really quick - check out the Dyson power blades in the restrooms. Supposedly they blast out air at 400 miles per hour-pretty sweet.

By Blue Sullivan As we approach the dog days of summer, the need for new sights, sounds, and venues becomes that much more immediate. To that end, this latest edition of the Triple-L (faux-hipster lingo for this humble column) is stuffed tighter than ever with the sort of tasty cultural morsels you have come to expect from these beloved pages. So get your pen and paper out, kids, and make yourself a note (place it somewhere you’ll see it, mind) to check out these civilizing entertainments:

LOOK: “Eastbound & Down”: Comedy Series, HBO Ok, perhaps all the entertainments listed here can’t be described as “civilizing,” necessarily. Case in point: this highly inappropriate yet ridiculously amusing HBO series produced by Will Ferrell. Starring Danny McBride (as seen in recent film comedies “Pineapple Express” & “Tropic Thunder”) as a washed-up, drug-addled former major league pitcher, “Eastbound & Down” charts the ex-superstar’s mainly futile attempts to get back to the big leagues while serving as a middle-school gym coach. Seek it out for many rude laughs on HBO or OnDemand.

LISTEN: Maximo Park – “The Kids Are Sick Again” This is the kind of edgy new take on new wave that pays tribute to the 80s without becoming just another facile homage to that generation’s music. Three minutes of restless time changes and outsized choruses, “The Kids are Sick Again” is the sound of a hot, enervated summer, whether it be in the UK (where Maximo Park calls home) or right here in the River Region. Essential.

SURF: Texts From Last Night www.textsfromlastnight.com Oh, what scandalous adventures are had by the tech-savvy generation, and this page documents the best (or worst, depending on your view) of them. Providing an anonymous forum for users to post their least safe-for-work texts, this site documents nightlife misadventures in a frequently uproarious (if highly adult) way that demands repeat visits. But for those easily offended by ribald content: don’t say you weren’t warned.

LOUNGE: Nestled unassumingly in the Peppertree shopping center, this East Montgomery hotspot offers a unique combination of hot culinary delights and cool musical entertainment. The sashimi style tuna and shrimp tacos are but two of the many great tapas-style dining fare available at Luna. Most nights offer a different, exciting live soundtrack for the festivities. Wonderful food, great music, beautiful people, and a lovely setting—what else could one possibly ask for?

The Alabama Dance Theatre will host its annual Summer Dance Seminar from July 20-August 3, 2009. Intermediate and Advanced dancers are eligible for this two week intensive seminar which features classical ballet, modern, and jazz classes taught by a nationally recognized guest faculty featuring former American Ballet Theatre Soloist, Shawn Black, Complexions dancer and Montgomery Native Wendy White Sasser, and Complexions dancer and Ballet Academy East instructor, Sabra Perry, along with Alabama Dance Theatre faculty. Summer is here and with the humidity, we are all looking for some new and fun hair products. Surf Spray is excellent for wavy types, landlocked surfers or for winter blues. It adds body to fine hair, is great for lift at the roots and gives salty, sexy, beachy texture. Great for your beach or pool bag! Available at L’Esprit Spa and Salon,

City of Montgomery Appreciation Party With the help of many awesome sponsors, Mayor Todd Strange hosted a City of Montgomery Employee Appreciation Day on June 6, 2009 at Riverwalk Amphitheater. Over a thousand attended the family festivities, including great food, entertainment, inflatables, Harriott II Riverboat rides, the big green bus and a dunking booth that contained no other than Mayor Todd Strange himself. A drawing was held to determine the lucky employees who weres able to take a shot at dunking the mayor. Lucky employees Gail Gipson and Shane Dockery made sure our mayor was cooled off with their perfect pitch! The City of Montgomery would like to thank the sponsors who made this event possible: Montgomery Area Chamber of Commerce, 2WR Holmes Wilkins Architects, ALFA, AT&T, Space Walker Rentals, Royal Cup, Coca-Cola, Blue Bell Creameries, Costco Wholesale. The most exciting summer wines to come from Argentina are making quite a splash in Montgomery. New Age White (an effervescent blend of citrus-y Sauvignon Blanc and fruity Malvasia) adds a distinctive Argentine touch when combined with various fruit juices for a South American Mimosa, Cosmopolitan or even New Age Sangria. Yet, the most common way to enjoy New Age is on the rocks with a slice of lime or lemon. This highly refreshing drink is called “Tincho” after the cocktail’s creator. - a look at local sound

evolett

RSVP JULY/AUGUST 2009

Photography by Darren Freeman

Guitarist Jonathan Flurry describes Evolett as “a group of Christians that love two things, God and our passion for music.” Evolett further evokes a style that is energetic, grungy, passionate, positive, and versatile-a four piece band with admirable chops and chunky riffs, topped with female vocals. Formed in the midst of bible study and college classes, they found each other. The same comfort they feel with one another is the same they extend to the fans. The group desires to know the fans that support them, and the acts they themselves support on stage. Musically, they have something to offer everyone, and, for those who are interested, they have something for the spirit as well. Some may call Evolett’s genre ‘indie-pop-core,’ or yet others may call it ‘indie-hardcore.’ Whatever label one might want to apply the band, one thing is certain: Evolett is rock for the next generation. Collectively, they are influenced by an array of artists such as UnderOATH, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Paramore, As I Lay Dying, and Britney Spears. Yes, Britney. Emerging from these varied influences is a substantially talented young band that is relevant to new music. So, for those interested in what the future of local and regional music might sound like, take a listen here. For the audiophile, the depth & sophistication of Evolett’s sound is superior to almost any of even the larger regional acts that perform in our area. The music of Evolett has an uncommon incipient mark of dedication and a unique freshness about it. Live, they deliver a striking reproduction of their recorded tracks. Recently, the band played a small acoustic gig in the Hot Topic store (did you know they host small local unsigned shows?) here in Montgomery. Though performing without their amps, the band retained its own impressive power, with the angelic voice of Haden Brightwell stealing the show.

The band’s spiritual background and statements of faith, which all members embrace and share, is the root to their philosophy of “reaching out to the unreached.” As guitarist Tyler Gates explains, “We are Christians. And, what we do is for God and only God.” Evolett witnesses that they are a group of Christians that makes God inspired music, yet their music reaches out to all. “We’re not there to preach. We are out to plant the seed,” explains Gates. If someone wants to know about the band’s beliefs, they need only ask them. Jonathan Flurry adds, “Our outreach is not onstage it is offstage.” So, what is the best part of the being in a band for the members of Evolett? According to the gang, it is live performance. Tyler Gates describes pre show consciousness: “right before you play that first note, your heart kind of drops a bit. When that feeling goes away, what’s the point in playing music?” Vocalist Haden Brightwell further adds that“[going on stage] is a big adrenaline rush. I don’t feel it before a show, but once I step on stage I feel it.” For drummer Stephen Taunton, the key is “to stay focused. I don’t think about the music, I play it.” Maintaining this focus is one of the essential components for Evolett to take their success to the next level. In addition, the band is intent on remaining musically current, staying relevant for the fan base, and avoiding the interpersonal squabbles that have felled many bands. Steve Hall, of Steve Hall Productions, is convinced, however, that “Evolett has the self confidence, poise, and chops that many bands that have been together for over 10 years could only dream to have. They are a shining star in the bright young music scene of Montgomery.” Come out to one of Evolett’s show and discover for yourself how true these words are!
