The weather was warm and breezy, and the atmosphere was jubilant at the 3rd Annual Hampstead Hop, held Thursday, June 7. When RSVP pairs up with Hampstead, it is guaranteed to be a great time!

Hampstead “Hoppers” were given a wristband that gave them access to great specials at three participating locations. At Farmhouse Kitchen, one could enjoy the Southern folk tunes of River Dan while snacking on chicken salad and cornbread muffins and sipping on sweet tea vodka and watermelon crawl cocktails. Hoppers swayed to the live jazz vibes of Jilla & Kurt as they

enjoyed wine and whiskey tastings at City Grill. The Tipping Point was a happening place with Zac Martin playing acoustic and several people testing seasonal beers. Hampstead made the perfect setting for this relaxed, but energetic event. Everywhere you turned live music filled the air, and each location evoked a different feel. But no matter where you turned, friends were laughing, spirits were poured, good food was devoured and great times were had. For the third year in a row, Hampstead Hop was a success, and all who attended left thinking “Can’t wait till next year!”

It was on January 10 that we celebrated 5 – years of RSVP, that is! This milestone event was held at the Alley Station Ballroom, where friends, family, advertisers, and the RSVP team assembled to enjoy a light evening of fun. A slideshow of photographs made way for laughter, talks and reminiscing. Tacky Sweater Christmas Party Everyone asks the same question: “you play what?” “I play kickball, adult kickball,” I respond. The reaction is always the same – a small chuckle, followed by a moment of contemplation. Then, the reply: “that really sounds like a lot of fun.” Well, it is. The pre-season starts off with some pick-up games. People gather, meet other people and begin to form teams. You may join a team of veterans or start your own deal. Coming up with a team name is pretty fun in and of itself. That said, it doesn’t take long to find your group and then, you just have fun. The set up is like the game you played when you were 10. The games are on Thursday nights from 6-9 p.m. Some people tailgate before the games, and most hit up the after party at Rock Bottom. This past season the WAKA AL Capital League teamed up with RSVP and Rock Bottom to throw an end-of-season Tacky Sweater Christmas Party. Together, RSVP and the kickball faithful decked the Rock Bottom halls with lights and mistletoe as everyone celebrated a great year. But the party wasn’t just about league champions and team awards. At the end of the night, the WAKA AL Capital league and RSVP team had raised nearly $4500.00 for the American Cancer Society. Kickball IS for adults – adults that like to have fun. If you’ve got a social bone in your body, you’ll have fun too.

rom gingham to gangnam, style goes beyond fashion. It’s the personal signature on everything we do. More than the clothes we wear, our inward style is reflected in how we go about life.

For the Alabama women who founded the Just Keep Smiling Foundation, they discovered a similar style- a heart that smiles beyond adversity. Debra Cook was there when her son’s heart took its final beat. The years of his courageous battle with heart disease made her keenly aware of her new ‘neighbors’-the struggling families who shared the waiting room chairs and hospital rooms beside her. Her child was gone, yet as she grieved this awareness lingered. Sue Jeffreys lost her entire family in a boating accident, on a rare day when she was not a passenger with her husband and two children. For years she struggled with feeling left behind, questioning her purpose to remain in this world without them. Patrice Brooks understands what it’s like to raise a child with a life-threatening illness. With empathy from her own personal experience as a parent, she wanted to encourage others like her. Individually, these stories are tragic but the outcome is a new narrative. Nearly seven years ago, these individuals joined together and formed a nonprofit organization called Just Keep Smiling or JKS, the first initial of each child. Their unique vantage resulted in a program that assists the immediate needs of families whose children have advanced medical conditions. Many times families are split apart as the required treatment is often in centers far from home and one parent stays behind to work or keep the other siblings in school. The normal routine of running a household becomes a distraction for parents who are bravely fighting for their child’s life and tasked with hard choices.

This is where JKS steps in, providing both emotional and financial strength to meet the interim needs of recipients who are prequalified by social workers. The charity is flexible to meet specific challenges for each family, but most often provides financial support for essentials like utility bills, housing and car payments, and covers travel expenses with food or gas vouchers. The goal of these resources is to offer parents the freedom to remain bedside during what could be their child’s last days. Over the years, JKS has served families at UAB, Children’s Hospital, Brookwood and St. Vincent’s and this past year, expanded their reach to Montgomery. Through generous underwriting by local businessman Russ Taylor, JKS has a local office complete with executive director, Mary Huey. With minimal overhead, the charity continues a phenomenal ratio of nearly one hundred percent of donations going directly to their services. Understanding the need for visibility, retail therapy takes on a whole new meaning this spring at the first Styles for Smiles shop and show to benefit JKS. Shopping for designer fashion and watching a fashion show is no longer frivolous, as this event reminds us that our greatest luxury is our health and well-being. In addition to local emcees JT and Leanne, celebrity couple Giuliana and Bill Rancic will host the fashion show, and guests who select the top tier entry donation will have the chance to meet them. Apprentice winner Bill Rancic and his wife, E! News anchor Giuliana, are no strangers to adversity. Their journey towards conquering both infertility and breast cancer is chronicled on Style’s hit series Giuliana & Bill. As a couple, they boldly chose to fight G’s untimely diagnosis with a double mastectomy that happily rendered her cancer free. In August of 2012, via gestational carrier, they welcomed their first bambino, little

man Duke. Highly engaged in charitable activities, they are committed to helping those going through hardships to find happiness and a positive outlook on life. RSVP had the pleasure of speaking with Giuliana and as huge fans, we were thrilled to find her just as fun to talk to as we had imagined. She and Bill are truly the all- American couple, yet seem genuinely unaffected by celebrity. As Giuliana explains, “We both had strict Catholic upbringings and believe family and faith are what’s important. We don’t get carried away by the glitz and fame and know it’s a part of life that’s fleeting, but with a strong foundation, when that day comes and it all goes away, if you still have your family and relationships, that’s all that matters.” When it comes to fashion, G admits it’s sometimes frightening to look at the E! footage over the past 11 years. While her fashion is toned down and “not as loud” as in the beginning, there’s added pressure as a co-star of Fashion Police and she readily admits she has become hypersensitive about not ending up on a worst-dressed list. While she is fortunate to have a styling team, ultimately the final decision is up to her. “Bill has great taste,” G beamed of her husband’s style. As a couple, they get fashion advice from one another before hitting the town and Giuliana enjoys putting outfits together for both of the men in her life. The new mom dished that before Duke was born, she envisioned strolling him around in skinny jeans, layered with shirt, sweater and scarf. However, now that he is 22 pounds at 6 months, she goes more for comfort – like sweats and cargo pants from Baby Gap. 38

For life’s tougher choices, they share a style of optimism. “When I was in pain after surgery, I would just repeat to myself, This too shall pass, this too shall pass,” recalled G. They have another favorite saying, “Everything will be ok in the end and if it’s not ok, it’s not the end.” Their philosophy for helping others is “don’t ask, just tell.” When Giuliana was recovering from her surgery, she loved when friends would bring magazines or food, leave it at the door, and simply text her it was there. She pointed out that you can begin to feel like a burden when people ask to help, as it can be a reminder of what you’re not able to do, but when people just did those things, it really brightened her day. Another exciting adventure will begin for the couple who have teamed up with executive producer Eva Longoria to host NBC’s Ready for Love, premiering Sunday, March 1. This revolutionary relationship show features three guys in search of love and three top matchmakers determined to find “the one.” In addition to helping couples find love, Giuliana and Bill, along with mini-man co-star Duke, are currently in production for Season 7 of their reality show, to air on Style in June. How to Talk to Girls at Parties ~An internet dating diatribe~

y assignment for this article was to provide a man’s perspective on the world of internet dating. So guys, here’s my perspective: Don’t. One out of five relationships may start online, but keep in mind 73.2% of all statistics are entirely made up. I know, I know, everyone has a friend of a friend who met the love of their life on farmersonly.com or whatever, but for every one of those stories there are ten saps that have wasted $29.95 and were too embarrassed to tell you about it. Some have scolded me for not giving it enough of a try, but after three weeks in it was clear that Dr. Neil Clark Warren did not think very highly of me. Although, it probably didn’t help that I chose to live tweet the whole process. Match #1: Pretty sure she hasn’t had a date since the Clinton administration #eHarmony Match #4: Just a suggestion, but “Cheeto” should probably stop being your go to selection when entering the spray tanning booth. #eHarmony My biggest problem with online dating is that it brings out the worst in us. As men, we are fundamentally lazy. If we have a safe yet borderline creepy dating venue that never takes us out of our comfort zone, many of us will jump right in. But I am here to inform you that human beings are entirely capable of in person social interaction without 14 degrees of personality assimilation, background checks, secure phone calls, and “guided communication” or other such nonsense created by the dating industry. I really think they just make this stuff up to sell you a recurring monthly membership on the sad superhighway. Plus the odds of meeting a Nigerian princess 40

looking for your bank account number while at a friend’s house party are pretty damn low. Match #7: Bears a striking resemblance to the 300 lb Naval Academy midshipman that put an end to my rugby playing days. #eHarmony Match #11: Quite literally looks like a supermodel. Translation, I am about to get my identity stolen. #eHarmony Nonetheless, after receiving my membership refund for violation of eHarmony’s privacy policy, (apparently tweeting photos and commentary about the ridiculous “matches” they provide is frowned upon) I used the cash to go out for a drink with some friends where I met an actual, living, breathing, cute female and asked her out for a date. See, it can happen even without a credit check or filling out a 30 page relationship questionnaire. I have no idea if we have 14 matching personality aspects or whether we both like dogs. Thus, I intend to take a novel approach; I am going to find out by talking to her over dinner. Match #14: Made 6 references to “50 Shades of Grey” in the first email; not sure how I feel about that. #eHarmony Match #15: Please tell me that is not the best photo you could find of yourself. And what’s with the jazz hands? #eHarmony So here is my take on internet dating interspersed with a few real time gems from the Twitter feed. So gentlemen, it’s time

to man up, put down the computer, get off the couch and relearn how to talk to girls at parties. Match #17: #eHarmony rule of thumb: more than one girl in the picture then she’s not the hot one…..

Anyone who reads my articles should be aware I am a rule maker. Abide by these rules, they work. Believe me I know; I suffer the consequences of breaking my own rules all the time. Match #20: Would be a lot cuter is she wasn’t sitting barefoot on a tractor in Corinth, Mississippi. #eHarmony Match #22: You had me at bikini profile picture. #eHarmony The first is to never turn down a reasonable invitation. I don’t care what it is: dinner with a group of friends, an acquaintance’s house party or just a night out with the boys. You can always find an excuse to be lazy and anti-social. Be willing to try something new and get outside your normal set. This doesn’t mean you have to go on a co-ed all-night coon hunt in Etowah county the night before you have a presentation at work, but it does mean you can’t sit at home on Friday night trolling internet dating profiles. You’re not going to meet anyone if you are not out there. Match #24: More pictures of your cats than of yourself……..and that’s a good thing. #eHarmony Match #25: Upside, very hot. Downside, very hot in a stripper working her way through cosmetology school kind of way. #eHarmony Now that you’ve made the monumental decision to put down your computer, it’s time to be proactive. Sure, I love a good night out on the town as much as the next guy (probably more than most), but be creative. I didn’t intend for you to change from couch potato to barfly. Come up with a reason to get your friends together a couple times a month. Host a dinner party, go kayaking, whatever, and ALWAYS encourage everyone to bring someone new. Just watch, it will be a thing before you know it. Other people will have ideas, and friends, etc. For that matter, there’s a whole list of events in the back of this magazine; just pick a couple and GO! All of a sudden you will be out there meeting new people and the idea of pensively waiting for some random stranger to return your “wink” will no longer seem as appealing. Match #27: Straight to sexting; bold move. #eHarmony Match #29: She has her hair in pigtails and brandishing a tire iron in semi-threatening manner #confused #abitfrightened #eharmony 42

I’m proud of you. You have taken the first step and are actually out on the town. Rule two, don’t be a wimp. Women don’t bite, well, at least not at first. If you see someone you think you may be interested in GO TALK TO HER and do it IMMEDIATELY before you can talk yourself out of it. Nicholas Boothman calls this the three second rule. Just say “one, two, three” and go. This can be quite nerve racking at first, but you are creating a new habit. Just do it; with practice it will become second nature. I know how hard this one can be; I am a procrastinator myself. But getting shot down in a flaming ball of fire feels a lot better than wondering “what if.” Let me give you a few tips here. Open with a little self-deprecating humor. There are few things in this world that ladies enjoy more than making fun of men. Also, make sure to have plenty of girl – friends. They universally make the best wingmen and can be relied upon to promptly let you know when you are making an idiot of yourself (mine certainly do.) So go for it; you may be surprised how often you don’t get shot down. Worst case, it gives you lots of material to write silly dating life articles. Match # 29: So what do you want to know about me? COLEMAN WOODSON III (Pictured Left ) “Music is not what I do, it’s who I am,” exclaims Coleman Woodson. Believe me, he knows music! He has literally lived music since the young age of 4, playing both the piano and the saxophone. He attended CPAC and BTW for high school, where he performed in show bands and jazz choirs. From there, he went on to graduate from UAB where he majored in music technology. While at UAB he spent 8 years in the 151st Army National Guard band. He has played with multiple bands including Blues Old Stand, Just A Few Cats, his own The Coleman Woodson Experience, and many others. While with Just A Few Cats, Coleman toured all over the world alongside Ruben Studdard and others. They played everything from large arenas and stadiums to intimate venues and clubs. They also played for television audiences on The Today Show, The Ellen Degeneres Show, The View, Late Night with David Letterman and The Tonight Show with Jay Leno.When asked what he loves the most about his work, Coleman responds with a smile, “my music has the power to change the atmosphere in a place and the mentality of each person listening!” The enormous support from both his parents has given him the confidence to devote himself to music. Coleman serves on the board of the Alabama Jazz and Blues Federation. He is extremely involved in the musical community of Montgomery and truly enjoys seeing the culture grow. Music is Coleman’s true passion and when he touches the keys each and every audience gets the very best of him.

WILLIAM HAMILTON CHAPMAN, D.M.D. “Seeing the smile on our patients’ faces when we finish treatment is priceless,” explains Dr. William Chapman. “I enjoy the whole process of straightening teeth from traditional braces to Invisalign, but most of all I enjoy helping people feel good about their smile,” he says. Will is a graduate of The Montgomery Academy, and he was blessed with some wonderful teachers and coaches. He says many of them are still molding kids’ lives here in Montgomery today. However, his parents will always be the biggest influences in his life. From his mother’s constant encouragement to his father’s incredible mentoring, they have always been there. Will received his undergraduate degree from Birmingham Southern College. He then attended dental school at UAB where he went on to receive his master’s degree in orthodontics. He focuses his community involvement on kids by coaching youth sports and teaching Sunday school. Will and his family enjoy life here for many reasons, but he says being able to live in a city that maintains a small-town feel is very important to them. He loves being able to load up and be in the woods in just minutes. He enjoys spending time with his wife Amy, son Hamilton, and daughter Hayes. Will enjoys playing his favorite sport, tennis, with Hamilton and Hayes from time to time.

KATE RUDD Kate Rudd, owner and designer of Studio 180, credits her father as the key to her success. He gave her the tools to be both creative and organized. She has also learned the keys to working independently and effectively under stringent deadlines, and believes creativity and organization are a must in the field of design. Studio 180 is a home staging, organization and interior design business. An ultimate problem solver, Kate seeks to meet style with functionality. It is challenging, but she believes the opportunity to impact her clients, community and the environment is worth it. Giving clients peace of mind is always Kate’s main goal. In addition to being a licensed real estate agent, Kate holds certifications in interior design and home staging. She received a Bachelor of Science from AUM as a double major with concentrations in accounting and finance. She is currently pursuing a master’s degree in commercial real estate investment analysis. Aside from the work ethic acquired from her father, Kate values the knowledge she attained from her previous employer, Tom Neville. She also draws inspiration from her grandfather, who was an engineer turned entrepreneur. Staying involved in the community is part of Kate’s life. She is a member of the USGBC, Montgomery chapter president of the National Association of Professional Women, a Montgomery Chamber of Commerce member and the list continues. When she does find time for fun, it usually involves the outdoors. Kate loves horseback riding, snow skiing, working out and target practice.

KYLE LOOMIS “I love being able to interact with animals on a daily basis,” says Kyle Loomis, the pet resort and daycare manager at Taylor Crossing Animal Hospital. Kyle graduated from MaconEast Montgomery Academy in May 2005 as co-valedictorian. His high school science teacher, Mr. Ray Clinton, significantly influenced Kyle’s education path. He began his college career majoring in general biology at Auburn University Montgomery. After a transfer to Auburn University, Kyle switched to a more concentrated degree choice of zoology: conservation and biodiversity. Kyle gives his biology teacher at AUM, Dr. John Aho, a lot of credit for helping him make that decision. Soon after graduating in May 2011, he was hired by Taylor Crossing Animal Hospital as the resident emergency veterinary technician. He held this position at TCAH from June 2011 to May 2012, when he was promoted to the position he now holds: managing the day to day operations of all animal boarding and daycare programs. And Kyle isn’t hesitant to tell you that the TCAH daycare and boarding programs are “the best in Montgomery.” He says that members of the Montgomery community have been very supportive, and they deserve the best care possible for their pets. Kyle and his wife Jessica enjoy the Montgomery area. They are members of Heritage Baptist Church, and Kyle is a zoo education intern at the Montgomery Zoo. Kyle is also a big Auburn fan, and in his spare time he enjoys playing basketball and reading up on wildlife.

JENNY JOHNSON LOCKHART At the University of the Pacific in northern California, Jenny Johnson Lockhart attained a bachelor’s degree of fine arts (graphic design) with a minor in art history. To kick-start her career, Jenny began working as a website designer. Although her work was rewarding, she longed to find another outlet for her creativity. It was then that she began designing and creating jewelry. Literally selling it off of her neck, she realized the need for a showroom. The studio quickly evolved into a full blown women’s boutique. After moving to Alabama, Jenny began working part time at Hue Studio, INC. She began creating jewelry again, and soon Jenny Johnson Jewelry Designs was born. Her parents’ love of art, antiques and flea markets left a strong impression on Jenny at a young age.Though moving from California to Alabama was a big step for Jenny, she views it as a blessing. Lockhart credits much of her success in Montgomery to the fabulous atmosphere at Hue Studio, where her close involvement has led her to be an active part of the community. This year she looks forward to Hue’s booth in the Styles for Smiles charitable event. Jenny’s husband, Lieutenant Colonel Bill Lockhart has helped her create a new life with her three stepsons Alex, Christopher and Jackson. This California girl has found her place in Dixie and is thankful for the beautiful landscapes that surround. From hiking to stand-up paddle boarding, Jenny enjoys the outdoors as well as the kindness of her surrounding Alabama neighbors

LEE GRAYSON LOWRY “This is home - the place where I learned about grace and generosity and loving my neighbor,” says Lee Lowry. “Those qualities have so nurtured me and laid the foundation of my career,” she explains. As the medical social worker and bereavement counselor for Hospice of Montgomery, Lee’s career certainly requires such qualities. She says that a lot of people think of hospice as very bleak and dark but they couldn’t be more wrong. She is honored to walk with people through such a time. And from her education to her faith, all of it began here in Montgomery. “This community has absolutely given me the confidence to pursue my dreams and step into my calling,” Lee exclaims. Lee gives a lot of credit to her grandmother, who was also a social worker, and taught her to really love people. After graduating from Auburn University with a degree in sociology, Lee went on to receive a master’s in clinical social work from New York University. She worked with domestic violence victims in Harlem and the Bronx for a period, but in October of 2012 she was ready to come back. Lee is an active member of First United Methodist in Prattville, where she serves on the worship team and volunteers with the youth ministry. In addition, Lee volunteers with the United Way, Habitat for Humanity, and the Montgomery Area Food Bank. When she gets time to let loose, she says that she loves a good dance party. Lionel Richie’s “All Night Long” is her jam.

KIMBERLY WASHINGTON Kimberly Washington is currently pursuing a Ph.D. in educational leadership at Auburn University. Her journey in education began with the Lowndes County Public School System ten years ago. After previously serving as teacher and principal, Kimberly is now the Director of Human Resources for the school district. She has made it a point to be a lifelong learner, always lending herself to cutting edge developments in education. Kimberly believes that her tenure as a school principal from 2008-2012 allowed her to positively impact many lives. She feels that it is important for educators to remain humble by always being open to new ideas, and believes it is even more important to share those ideas with your students. “I realize that in our competitive society, it is important for students to not only receive a solid education, but to be educated by someone who is aware of and sensitive to the individual needs of children,” she explains. Kimberly is a native of Montgomery and attends Pilgrim Rest Missionary Baptist Church. She is a volunteer for the Montgomery Council on Aging where she happily finds time to give back to the community. She loves spending time with her beautiful children Kiyah and Keltric Jr. and credits her success to her parents who have given her unconditional support.

Forrest Meadows is a firm believer in the old adage “there is no substitute for hard work.” He learned the principle from his father, and it is one of the main reasons for his success. Forrest is the owner/ broker of Forrest Meadows Homes & Land, LLC and an associate broker of Hampstead Community Realty, LLC. A veteran of Desert Shield/Storm, Forrest was a jet engine mechanic with the United States Air Force. He graduated from Troy University with a B.S. in resource management, and in 2002 he entered the real estate business. Since Forrest had worked with mostly large companies his entire career, starting his own business was a little intimidating. However, it didn’t take long for him to enjoy holding himself accountable for everything. Of course, Forrest points out that he has a great base of repeat clients that have been very loyal. “Being able to celebrate milestones with clients, whether it be buying or selling a property, is something I cherish,” says Forrest. He has built many lasting relationships with people of the River Region. He serves on the board of directors of the Montgomery Area Association of Realtors and as a board member with the Alabama Animal Alliance. Forrest and his wife Leslie have a 15-year old son, Hunter, and 3 rescue dogs. Together, they enjoy doing anything in the great outdoors – whether boating at Lake Martin, hiking, hunting, or fishing. They also enjoy the small town feel of Montgomery and its proximity to the beaches.

Jessica Weyreuter loves living in the moment. She is currently a tennis instructor at Montgomery Country Club as well as the owner of Jessiwey LLC.The mission of her company is to take athletic programs to higher levels of efficiency by increasing enjoyment, participation, retention, goodwill and profits. It offers consulting in many areas such as planning, organization, strategic support and budget management. Starting your business takes independence, something Jessica learned at an early age. Her father taught her strict focus and strong work habits that gave Jessica the ability to take risks, but learn from her mistakes. Jessica’s mother balanced it out well by teaching Jessica that every problem has a solution. Jessica has traveled several countries playing tennis and eventually earned her spot on the Professional Tennis Tour from 2001 to 2006. She also graduated with a bachelor’s degree in communication & journalism, a minor in business administration, and a master’s in international relations. Her latest project draws from all of her experiences. Jessica is developing an adaptive tennis program that is specifically designed for children with physical or intellectual disabilities. Jessica finds time to give back to the community by helping to manage public relations, communications and fundraising activities for the Alabama World Affairs Council and the local chapter of the American Cancer Society. When she’s not teaching her students how to improve their game you can find her horseback riding, cooking for friends, or traveling.

An LPN and skincare/cosmetics consultant, Brittney Waites is certified in advanced aesthetics. She specializes in Dermaplaning, medical-grade chemical peels, and skin analysis. Brittney’s smile and positive attitude really help Dr. Mackey’s patients feel comfortable. Many clients come in unsure about what, if anything, they need to do to help improve their skin. Brittney enjoys her job because it allows her to educate people about their skin and help them feel good about themselves. She also likes that it allows her to meet a lot of new people and build relationships. Brittney credits her family for the person she is today. Her parents taught her the importance of hard work and education. From her step-mother, she learned the importance of creativity and self-expression. Her grandparents taught her the importance of character. Those teachings combined with the wonderful support of the love of her life, Charles, give Brittney the drive she needs to be a good mother while pursuing her career. Somehow, she still finds time to give back. Brittney and her co-workers have helped to host twelve out-of-office events that have allowed thousands of Alabamians to receive free skin care products and services, education on cosmetic procedures, and most importantly, skin cancer education. She enjoys working with the people of her community, and says she has made many great friends in the process. Brittney and Charles have one son, Colt. They enjoy the small-town feel of Montgomery. When she does have some spare time, she enjoys crafting, painting, and traveling.

DaQuentin Davis measures success by his ability to give back to his community. Equipped with an associate’s degree in education, a Bachelor of Science in resource and technology management, and a Master of Science in human resource management, DaQuentin serves as the Director of Human Resources at Medical AIDS Outreach of Alabama. This private, nonprofit, community-based AIDS service organization is dedicated to medical care and mental health counseling. DaQuentin is proud to serve a community that has shown him such overwhelming support. For DaQuentin, overcoming the fear of being successful was one of his biggest triumphs. He realized that he couldn’t be afraid to fail. He found inspiration from his hardworking mother, who dedicated her life to providing for her family as a single parent. Davis learned quickly that talent and great work ethic are not enough. In order to truly be successful he must surround himself with positive people who want to help him rise to the top. When not working at MAO, DaQuentin supports the community in other ways. He is an active member of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity INC, co-chair of the African American Domestic Violence Peace Project, and a member of the board of directors with Central Alabama AIDS Resource Advocacy Center. He participates in the AIDS Walk, March of Dimes, Relay for Life and Joy to Life Walk. DaQuentin also has a serious interest in fashion. His own clothing line is due out in Fall 2013.

hat is it about a dancer’s body that makes an average, not so coordinated woman, like me, stop and stare? I think it’s more than the long lean muscles; it’s the perfect poise and confidence in which she carries herself. Now, thanks to Montgomery’s newest fitness venue Pure Barre, we can all have the dancers’ bodies we’ve envied and the air of confidence will follow suit. No matter your size, shape, gender, fitness level or age, Pure Barre is for anyone and everyone. My mom even successfully made it through a class. Instructors let you know of modifications you can do if you’re not up to their skill level, so if you’re new to exercising, don’t be fearful. According to studio owner Katie Lowder, “Pure Barre is a safe barre workout. There are no fast or large movements that could have a negative impact on your joints. We keep our classes small, so the teacher can give proper attention to each student. Although the class is intense, as long as you can hold on to the barre, you can do it! All fitness levels are welcome and no dance experience is required.” Barre workouts have been named the “hottest workout trend” for the past few years and Montgomery got in on the action about a month ago. Located in Cloverdale, the Montgomery studio is the ninth to open in Alabama (two in Birmingham, two in Huntsville, one in Auburn, Tuscaloosa, Mobile and the Fairhope/Daphne area). A franchise out of Denver, Col., Pure Barre has 116 locations across the nation. I was quite excited for its local opening but to be honest, I was mainly nervous. A workout inspired by ballet? I’m more of a spaz than a dancer. Resorting to the trusty internet to search “what to expect at Pure Barre,” I ran across a slew of blog posts and articles telling me that small, isometric movements are the techniques I’d experience. This sounded like a welcome change of pace to the intense cardio and strength training I thought I would have to endure to get into shape. So when it came time for the first class, I showed up with a curious attitude wearing the new workout gear I bought especially for the occasion. My anxious feet donned the pure barre sticky socks and I was ready. Within the first three minutes, I began sweating. Throughout the class, just when I started to think “I CAN’T TAKE IT ANYMORE,” the instructor changed it up and we were moving on to the next thing. This

makes it easy to endure and actually creates an enjoyable, not stale, workout. At the end of the class, I felt worked but energized. I didn’t leave panting or on the verge of nausea. I left exhilarated and with an anticipation for my next visit to the barre. The next day, I felt soreness in parts of my body that I didn’t even know existed. By the second class, I found that the moves felt a little less awkward (I was getting better!). After about five classes, I noticed I was stronger and even felt like I could walk in high heels more easily. I don’t know if it was my stronger core, newly found leg muscles or the combination of the two but I was beginning to think there was something to this poise thing. I even found myself sitting up straighter at my office desk. And when I caught myself “tucking” in the stylist chair with foils atop my head, I knew I was hooked. Pure Barre focuses on the trouble areas most women (and some men) face: the seat, arms, thighs and abs. In as little as ten classes, you can expect to see a transformation in your body. Because it doesn’t involve any bouncing or jumping, the technique is safe on your joints. Each strength section is followed by a sequence of stretching, which creates those long, lean muscles without bulk. Hello, dancer’s body! f you ask Chris Gilbert what his inspiration was for Toadlick Music Festival, he will tell you quite simply, “I just wanted to have a party.” With the help of family and friends, last year Gilbert was able to put together much more than a party – he managed to assemble a three day festival that, despite inclement weather, was attended by over 31,000 people. This year’s event, featuring big names in music from country, rock and southern rock, is shaping up to be even bigger and better. Held in Dothan at the National Peanut Festival Fairgrounds, Toadlick Music Festival 2013 will take place April 11-13. Over a dozen artists are scheduled to perform, including Thompson Square, Jake Owen, Gretchen Wilson, 3 Doors Down and Lynyrd Skynyrd. Also scheduled to appear is country music artist Donica Knight, a Prattville native, who has made the leap to the big stage after playing in cover bands for college crowds. New to Toadlick this year is their Battle of the Bands Competition. For the last several months, bands from around the state have been competing for the coveted award of opening for one of this year’s artists at the festival. Toadlick is unique for a music festival in that it is both family friendly and affordable. Children ages 12 and under are admitted for free, and general admission tickets are only $99 for the entire three day event.

There are also tickets available for individuals or groups who wish to use the fairground’s camping facilities; these range from $50 for the most basic up to $400, which gets you a full RV hook-up providing electrical, water, and sewer services. Along with food and drink vendors, there will be a children’s play zone set up as well. Because there will be no vendors selling alcohol, this year Toadlick is allowing guests to bring their own collapsible cooler. For $10 a day, guests may bring a collapsible cooler (nothing on wheels) with food and drinks, including alcoholic beverages (no glass allowed). According to Gilbert, the “learning curve from Toadlick 2012 was huge.” His team has worked diligently to ensure that this year’s event is even better than 2012. For those traveling to Dothan, Toadlick has partnered with area hotels to offer discounted rates. And not only does Toadlick provide a boost to the local economy, a portion of ticket sales will be donated to both Wiregrass Children’s Home, an emergency shelter for abused and neglected children in southeast Alabama, as well as The Warrior Foundation, which helps children who have lost a parent in the U.S. Special Forces receive funds for college education. “Pizza! Pizza!”—Oh, how we Americans love this Italian creation “from sea to shining sea.” From a big, thin crust New York “slice of pie” on the east coast to barbeque chicken pizza made famous on the west coast by Wolfgang Puck to Chicago’s deep dish pizza inspired by Sicilian immigrants and their sfincione, pizza is now as American as apple pie.

But now, pizza is as much about the vibe of the “place” as it is about the pie itself. Eating pizza with the team after a Little League game feels different than gathered with a group of friends late night studying or as a reward for helping a friend move. So, be prepared Queen Margherita, the pizza has evolved since it was first made in your honor by Raffaele Espositio in Naples, Italy, back in the 16th century. And fortunately for us, Montgomery has some great pizza places—all with a different vibe, by putting their spin on the pizza pie.

When I first moved to Montgomery years ago, pizza options were slim. There was the national “hut” chain, Corsino’s and Tony’s, all three of which I would classify as “bowling alley pizza”—the type of take out pizza that was on a cardboard disk, tucked into a “Yo, Vinnie. Frankie. Let’s go get a slice ~ y’all!” bag where the end had been stapled closed and the bag absorbed the excess grease as it was brought home in the car. [Don’t misunderstand; I have a childhood fondness for this type of pizza!]

With downtown Montgomery’s food scene expanding, encouraging us all to return to the heart of the city, Sa Za was really the first restaurant to anchor the Alley as a success. With an upscale vibe, Sa Za is definitely not a joint, it serves “Grandma’s dishes” to those who want to go out on the town and leave Grandma tucked in for the night at home. Here the pizzas are big and so is the energy in the room. Offering appetizers like Eggs in Purgatory, White Polenta with Mushrooms, and Grandma’s Eggplant, the menu starts you down an Italian path that will lead you to salads, sandwiches, pasta entrees, and pizza, of course! Breaking the theme a little bit, the Greek Pizza (a tribute to the gyro) and heading farther east with the Kafta Lamb (cardamom curry lamb, with mint oil, yogurt, and feta) take you off of the “boot” to Greece and India. Grandma’s Pizza reminds you that this is indeed an Italian restaurant with this spin on the classic Pizza Margherita. I thought I would head to northern Italy and try the Pizza Palliard, which combines pesto (something from Columbus’ hometown of Genoa) with the classic French treatment of chicken by pounding it flat into a thin cutlet before being grilled. I am a big fan of the chicken and pesto combination and the green onions were a nice addition, too. Sa Za captures the east coast Italian-American flair of grandma’s recipes, big flavors, and fun—just what Montgomery needs to continually liven up downtown! 66

Located in the Cloverdale neighborhood’s “artist” block, Tomatino’s was the first to bring gourmet pizza to “the Gump.” Capers, artichoke hearts, pesto, almonds, feta, and roasted garlic are some of their gourmet toppings, while the classic offerings of veggies and meats will satisfy the non-adventuresome pizza lover, too. Inside, the classic, exposed red brick interior has a college or student vibe—local “for sale” art hangs on the wall, the bandana or sometimes rasta hat clad staff is laid back and friendly, while the music is as eclectic as any college radio station playlist, ranging from classic rock to 70’s pop to jazz, funk, blues and beyond. From simple salads (I highly recommend getting the Shiitake Sesame Vinaigrette) to foccacia sandwiches and calzone, Tomatino’s also has a selection of “Special Pizza” featuring, to name only a few, a Margherita, Supreme, Mediterranean (with capers, artichoke hearts, and spinach), Summer Garden (with basil pesto, squash, and sun-dried tomatoes), Meat Supreme, and the Bianca (with roasted garlic, Canadian bacon, red onion and mushroom.) I had the Sicilian: a pie topped with sliced meatballs, roasted red peppers, caramelized onions and goat cheese. The crust is made in house and resembles Italian pizza crust—thin, crunchy, with a nice chew. The slight sweetness of the peppers and the onions worked well with the tangy goat cheese. Pizza doesn’t have to be all about mozzarella. Plus, the addition of the meatballs gave me the image of a plate of spaghetti and an apron-clad grandmother making sure you had more than just one helping—Sicilian indeed! 68

One of Montgomery’s newest pizza joints, Midtown Pizza Kitchen is bustling with activity. Roman born owner and world freestyle dough throwing winner Christophe Zagaglia is serving up some authentic Italian food. Italians celebrate food and family and Chef Christophe is certainly showcasing both here in Montgomery’s Zelda Place Shopping Center. Though it is full of families, the menu is not “dumbed down” to satisfy a child’s palate. In addition to pizza, the menu features bruschetta, stromboli, panzanella salad, and a variety of sandwiches and pasta dishes. The Funghi et Salsicca (Mushroom and Sausage) pizza features fennel sausage, caramelized onions, mushrooms, ricotta cheee and a white sauce. La Classica (the Classic) combines pepperoni, mushrooms and mozzarella and The VY is a red-sauced pizza with spinach, Italian sausage, artichokes, tomato, and provolone. Of all the selections, and there are many, I went with the Trastevre. Named after the Roman working class neighborhood that hugs the Tiber River, this pizza is a combination of roasted chicken, grape tomatoes, sweet peppers, arugula, parmigiano cheese, all atop a red sauce. The arugula has a peppery flavor, while the peppers bring a sweet contrast to the arugula’s spice. The tomatoes add a fresh garden flavor to the pie and the roasted chicken is a great change from sausages or bacons. Chef Zagaglia is really bridging the gap between American pizza and Italian pizza with his choice of familiar and unfamiliar ingredients, such as guanciale – a sweet bacon -for Montgomery diners to branch out and experiment tasting. Plus, it’s all set in a warm and inviting family setting. You’ll find true Italian hospitality at Midtown Pizza Kitchen in the big smile and handshake of Chef Christophe ~ Salute!

Reaching a little farther north than Montgomery, Fox’s Pizza Den is located in historic downtown Prattville, just a stone’s throw from Heritage Park with its overlook of Autauga Creek and the Pratt Gin. Fox’s Pizza Den not only does round pizzas but they do a “Big Daddy” rectangular pie that’s shape reminds me of the pizza-bythe-slice shops in Italy. Fox’s also carries over the pizza theme into their sandwiches with the Wedgie, a sandwich served on pizza crust instead of a bun. Their pizzas go a little “American” in taste with the Bacon Double Cheeseburger, Taco, and BBQ pizzas—and the Club Rancher truly goes American by replacing the traditional red sauce with a Ranch garlic sauce. These pizzas remind me of west coast pizzas in that they unabashedly embrace the American palate. So, as the saying goes, “When in Rome….” I ventured off the menu to have the Prattville Fox’s signature pie, the Wild Greek Pizza, named in honor of franchiser Terry Pappas’ father, affectionately known in the area as the “Wild Greek.” With a choice of either chicken or beef (I went beef), the crust is lightly covered in red sauce and topped with red onions, black olives, tomatoes, spinach, banana peppers (for a tease of heat), mozzarella and feta cheeses. By having not too much sauce, a great balance of cheeses and using all fresh ingredients, the additional crunch of the banana peppers will make you go “wild” for this Greek, too. Casual on the inside with exposed brick and a pleasant staff behind the counter, if you haven’t taken a drive to historic Prattville recently, Fox’s Pizza Den is a good excuse to jump in the car, eat a wedgie or a pizza, grab a specialty coffee from the Southern Ground Coffee bar and take a stroll to Heritage Park to listen to the creek run by the old mill—now that’s Italian. Or since I was eating Greek, maybe I should toast and exclaim, “Opa!” 72

Montgomery Zoo Docent

In a world where people are working longer and playing harder, it is not always easy to find a helping hand. Fortunately for the Montgomery Zoo, that is not the case. The Zoo has been overwhelmed with the efforts of volunteers and took the time to say “thanks” to the docents and zooteens who have volunteered a combined 14,000 hours this year. On January 29, the Montgomery Zoo’s education department and the Montgomery Area Zoological Society held a banquet to honor those who have given the Zoo their time, energy, skills and resources. Among the honorary guests were two ladies very deserving of recognition. Valerie Castanza and Sarah Martin were applauded for their generosity, commitment to community education, and care of the animals that have captivated their interests. Valerie, a dedicated volunteer, began working with the Zoo two years ago at the giraffe encounter post, then later teamed up with the education department. She has been known to take off work to spend time with the zoo staff, making her a very deserving winner of the Docent of the Year award. Also honored as Docent of the Year, Sarah Martin earned the nod after years of hard work. She began in 2011 as a docent and by 2012, Sarah was a full-time intern. She coordinated the 2012 Summer Camp and also ran the “Creatures of the Night” program during Zoo Boo. In December of 2012, Sarah received her master’s degree in education. The Montgomery Zoo and Montgomery Area Zoological Society would like to say thanks to Sarah and Valerie, as well as countless other volunteers who have made a lasting impact on the educational interest of the community and the well being of the animals. We would like to encourage all of you to take the time to give back with whatever means you can!

Abita Strawberry The appearance of Abita Strawberry Harvest Lager, commonly called just “Abita Strawberry,” is a highpoint of spring for its fans. Abita describes its seasonal release as “a lager brewed with pilsner and wheat malts and Vanguard hops.” The twist, of course, is that brewers add “real Louisiana strawberry juice” to the beer after it is filtered. The beer is only brewed during strawberry harvest season, and the girls at RSVP were counting down the days until February 18, when it hit shelves everywhere. It is hard to find and doesn’t last long so dedicated drinkers snatch it up quickly and often hoard it for themselves. If you haven’t tried it yet, put it on your “to do” list. We guarantee you will have no regrets.

Troyfest

Held every year during the last weekend in April is a premier art and craft festival known as TroyFest. Located in the heart of Troy, Ala. in the Historic Downtown Square, this year’s event will take place April 27-28. The charming location sets the stage for a cultivating community event that won’t disappoint. With more than 150 vendors, people of all ages can enjoy a wonderful selection of art, food, entertainment and activities. TroyFest is a festival free to the public presented by the City of Troy, Pike County Chamber of Commerce, Troy Arts Council and the Alabama State Council on the Arts. Drawing upwards of 10,000 people throughout the weekend, this is one of central Alabama’s most exciting events.
